PXE boot into terminal server farm

Hello,

Our company has many terminal servers in a connection broker. We have multiple old computers + a bunch of thin clients that today PXE boots into a cut down version of Ubuntu from where the users RDP into our terminal servers with 2008R2 and some 2012.

We have had many issues with linux images to PXE into. Some clients get no sound at times, freerdp disconnects ramomly and other issues. We have tried many different Linux images and all has it's issues.

So my question is, does Microsoft offer it's customers any better way to PXE thin clients and RDP into Terminal servers?

Thinking since Microsoft offers terminal server, they should also have some way to RDP into them without the need of installing anything on the clients?

Server 2012 R2 Web Access, Redirect Only Specific Drives to Collection

Hello,

We have a RD deployment with a gateway server, web access server, connection broker and multiple session hosts.

As it stands, I have several session hosts shown in the web access page as a collection. The collection itself has drive redirection enabled, allowing users on thin clients to see the USB drive attached to the thin client, on the server.

The problem is, it also maps the RAMDrive (z) and the OS partition (c). As the connection to the collection is automatic, the user does not get any option as to what drives are/aren't redirected.

Is there some way I can centrally apply exclusions, so we can prevent a thin client from mapping the C and Z drives? Or perhaps even add in an option before the user is connected, so they can select which drives to map?

Adding favicon.ico to 2012 RDS Web page

Trying to add a custom favicon.ico to our 2012 RDS Web Access.   I've tried putting it in C:\inetpub\wwwroot and C:\Windows\Web\RDWeb with no sucess.   Any ideas?

Just can't connect to second host in RDS Collection

I think I have posted on this before but I'm still having problems and I don't know where to look. Here is my setup:

Server: ProdRDP1.proddom.local
    -RD Gateway Role
    -RD Connection Broker Role
    -RD Session Host
    -Firewall Ports 443, 3389, 3391 point to this with external dns: RDPProd.mydomain.com

Server: ProdRDP2.proddom.local
    -RD Session Host
    -No External address

RD Gateway Collection contains ProdRDP1 and ProdRDP2

I have used the Set-RDPublishedName to rdpprod.mydomain.com

We have a domain trust between ourselves and our client for the Connection rights to the collection and the ability for them to login with their own credentials in this other domain. That is working just fine.

Originally, those people who were within the external trusted domain who can route into ours over the VPN were told simply to use rdpprod.mydomain.com to connect and not use the RDGateway. It is fine for them because even if they are redirected to ProdRDP2.proddom.local with the internal IP address it works because they can route to that address.

Then there are people who are in offices that cannot route to the internal IP addresses and as long as the Connection Broker connected them to ProdRDP1 they were fine because that had an external IP address and they got right in. However, If it decided they needed to be on 2 because of load balancing it didn't work saying the IP address couldn't be contacted, obviously. That's why we started correcting them to say they should always usehttps://rdpprod.mydomain.com/RDWeb to connect to systems.

Now the problem we're up against is this. If you're on an external network. A non-trusted domain network like a mobile hotspot, your house, or a coffee shop. Using the RDWeb method (which is preferred anyway)works just fine. If you are redirected to RDP2 it works and there is no problem. However, if you're on the trusted network that cannot route to the internal IP address it doesn't. You don't get the error that the IP is not working. It is a different error that I don't have handy right now. (sorry). The gateway should still be functioning for them but it doesn't and I don't know the reason.

What is the minimum technical requirements for thin rdp clients for windows server 2012 R2 with Remote Desktop Services collections ?

Is it possible to use a all kinds of thin RDP clients as long as this thin client is running Windows Embedded OS including Internet Explorer to use RemoteApp and desktop funtions againt a RPD published windows server 2012 R2 with Remote Desktop Services collections?

3. Please send me a overview for all OK testet thin RDP clients  approved by Microsoft regarding windows server 2012 R2 with Remote Desktop Services

2012 R2 RD Session Host Domain Users Cannot Change Password

I set up a Windows 2012 R2 Session Host as per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2833839 and joined it to the domain.  Now, users are unable to change their password. When they log in to the RDSH and "ctrl-del-end", they are given the change password dialog, but they are told that their password "doesn't meet complexity requirements" even if it does.  I suspect the issue is related to the fact that there is no "session collection" per se and that the "connection broker" role is not installed.  Is there any way around this?  The end game would be to have them log into this RDSH and be able to change their password to conform with the domain password policy

2012 R2 User profiles are multiplying user, user.000, user.001

This is a new 2012 R2 server and the user profiles are multiplying user, user.000, user.001 or user, user-backup-0, user-backup-1.

The server was working fine for about a month and then the profile issue started.

I'm now getting 1 user that is now getting a Temporary profile when she logs in.  I checked the registry and there are no .bak listings in the user profile section.

The event viewer only mentions 1 error about the user getting the Temp Profile.

Cannot run more than one instance of a remote app in remote desktop services Server 2012

All,

I installed "Remote Desktop Services (RDS) Quick Start Deployment for RemoteApp, Windows Server 2012 Style" using the instructions here http://blogs.technet.com/b/yungchou/archive/2013/02/07/remote-desktop-services-rds-quick-start-deployment-for-remoteapp-windows-server-2012-style.aspx

I need to set up an image viewing program (Olyvia) to allow students using Macs and iPads access to this windows only application in order for them to get their work done.  We may have 12 or more students accessing and trying to run the Olyvia application at any one time.

All works good, except that I cannot run the Olyvia application (setup as a remoteapp program) more than one instance at a time.  That is, when I start up "olyvia" on a Mac, it works great.  If I leave it up and running, and then try and start up "olyvia" on an iPad (using different accounts), I get the following error message:

"Cannot run more than one instance of this program simultaneously.  Either the program is already running, or it has not been terminated completely."

I need to understand the root issue.

1.  Is this a licensing issue?  So, I need to add some CALs to the RDS server?

2.  Is this a application issue with "olyvia"?  So, no matter what I do, it is not going to be able to be used by more than one person at a time when configured as a remoteapp?

3.  Did I not "publish" the application correctly?

4.  Is this happening because I followed the "quick start" guide?

Appreciate any help I can get on this.  We have no problem getting CALs, I just need some help with the root issue.

Is it possibly to associated the clients application with a RDS hosted Internet Explorer

We are in the process of upgrading all our staffs IE from IE8 to IE11 but have found that some users still need IE8 for their applications to run.

From the reading I have done to date it appears to stay legal I can't have 2 different versions of IE running within the same operating system, which ever manner I choose to deliver this it will have to be in a hosted environment (local or remote).

We have gone for RDS but the issue I have is that the webpage opens a Microsoft Word document and the Microsoft Word it is opening is the on the server where I would like it to open up Word on the local clients computer.

Is it possibly to redirect the file associations from the RDS server to the client computer

Server 2012 Remote Desktop "Admin Mode" missing Host Configuration

Hi,

I've searched the forums, the TechNet library, google, bing, without success. Please can someone clarify the following for me:

I'm looking for a way to configure the RDP session host settings (redirection restrictions, limit color depth, etc.) for a stand-alone (non-domain-member/workgroup machine) server 2012 in "Admin Mode". Pretty much the same you could do in Windows 2008 (R2) using the Host Configuration snap-in.

I understand the host configuration snap-in is gone in 2012 (for whatever reason?!) and installing the RDS Session Host role requires me to make the machine member of a domain to configure its settings using the server manager (for whatever reason?!). I'm also not entirely sure if I need a CAL to run an RDS Session Host on a windows server but at least it seems to change some settings using gpedit.msc in Computer\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\... (strangely not all settings seem to work).

The ultimate question: is there a way to tweak those things on a stand-alone server 2012 running admin mode only? If so, how?

on a new windows  server 2012 with the "remote desktop session host" role enabled, and "Remote desktop Licensing" we are unable to locate the "remote desktop services manager" snapin.

I have installed Terminal Services and applied the Licences but we are still receiving this message. The Licensing mode is already set to User CAL and all services are deployed on the same server.

but when we disable desktop exprience then java is work on all RDP please guide how to solve this problem because we want to enable desktop exprience and also need java on all RDP's.

I have a windows  server standard 2012 sngl OLP 1 license, License no. 49813279 , name samik basu,. i am facing a problem with this license. i have installed windows 2008 server enterprise edition through this license. but after getting windows update on 12.02.2015 the font has been changed  on Screen of server and clients also. we are using terminal clients. please help us to resolve.

I recently got a new PC and loaded the newest version of Remote Desktop Connection Manager.(2.7)  I am having trouble getting the hosts to fill the available screen. (No Scrolling) This was easily achieved in the previous version.  I am sure I am missing something.  Thanks in advance.

RDS licensing

Hi,

I have two questions about RDS licensing.

If we purchase per user licenses we must have the number of licenses as real persons or as domain users that have access to RDS?

If we purchase per device licenses, when the temporary license expires after 90 days will it be reassigned to the device or the device access will be blocked?

Hello,

after final configuration for this 2012 R2 Farm with High Availability with 2 servers each Host Broker Gateway, I can connect to DNS RR endpoint with DNS RR gateway.

However, access to RDS console is lost with error message:

The server pool does not match the RD Connection Brokers that are in it. Errors:
1. The server pool contains RD Connection Broker servers that are both clustered and not clustered

How can I possibly bring back missing server ?

Server 1 has a HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tssdis\Parameters\DBConnString pointing to SQL Database for the HA

Server 2 has none

Should I add this value?

How best to improve graphics performance on RDS host servers??

We have a small RDS farm running on Windows Server 2012 R2.

All the RDS hosts and related servers are virtual servers running on vSphere 5.5 (hardware version 8 if that makes any difference).

I've seen various articles about configuring RemoteFX in Group Policy, but they are confusing.

I'm not asking about improving things like watching YouTube videos etc., I'm asking about improving graphics in general, like screen redraws and displaying mouse movements, keystrokes, etc.

What are the best things to do to improve these things within an RDS farm??

I will try increasing the video RAM within the host servers' VM settings but this is a guess, and these hosts are logged into by multiple users over VPN connections...
