RSD server enables and forces Windows 8.1 updates when updates are disabled in the guest OS

Apologies for maybe not getting all the terminology right, we're fairly new to RDS/Hyper-V from VMWare.

For various business reasons, we need to run Windows 8.1 VMs with updates disabled - we do update the OS regularly, just on our own schedule.  In one, and so far only one of our WS2012/Hyper-V/RSD environments we've discovered that every time we add a Windows 8 VM to any collection on the RDS server, the RDS server first 'scans' the VM to determine what Windows updates are missing from the guest OS, then schedules a task in the RDS database on the server that actually runs Windows update on the VM/guest OS.

We've had no luck so far figuring out why this happens in only one environment (we have multiple development and test environments), why this happens at all (um, we turned off Windows updates, why did RDS decide to apply them anyway?), and lastly and most importantly, how we can make sure this feature is turned off at our customer sites (because this really breaks our and our customers environments) ?

Any hints or help would be appreciated.

What technical details we know:

RDV Windows Update Plugin - this is the RSD plugin that does the guest OS scanning and schedules the update-the-guest-OS tasks

There are also powershell commands that can list and remove the update tasks:

Get-RDPersonalVirtualDesktopPatchSchedule, Remove-RDPersonalVirtualDesktopPatchSchedule

Suffice to say the MSDN documentation for these is sparse.

Obviously we can schedule our own task to run the Remove... powershell command every so often to blow away the scheduled tasks, but that is not an optimal solution to have to do that on every server at every customer site.  We really want to make sure that this feature is disabled on the server.

Thanks,

RemoteFX Testlab

Hello,

I currently have 1 physical server for test/learning purpose, until now i haven’t had any Problems/limitations on hardware or configuration my test environment. Until I started implementing the “Remote Desktop Services” Role

Goal: Working RemoteFX environment, this is for testing/learning purpose with only 1 user.

Hardware Configuration:

CPU: I3-3225 (3rd Generation Intel – SLAT Support)

CPU Graphic: Intel® HD Graphics 4000

RAM: 16GB

Video: Nvidia Quadro 600 (1GB) Graphic Card

Free Space: 30GB SSD, 1,5TB HDD

Software configuration:

Host OS: Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1

Roles; DHCP, DNS(Secondary), File Services, Hyper-V, Network Policy and Access Services, Remote Desktop Services

VM’s

VM01: Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1

Roles: Active Directory Domain Services, DNS(Primairy)

Carried out:

- -      Added: Nvidia Quadro 600 (1GB) Graphic Card

-       - Moved: DC to a new VM (VM01)

-       - Installed: the Remote Desktop Services +  Roles: Remote Desktop Services, RemoteFX Session Licensing, RemoteFX Session Manager

- -      Added: RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter in VM Setting

Problem: VM keeps hanging on Starting (10%) and gives an error: “Insufficient system resource exist to complete the requested service” after a while

I have searched multiple forum trying to find a solution and the answers vary from hotfixes to hardware related answers. I installed the hot fixes, re-installed the role, deleted the Intel HD Graphic 4000 hardware component, with still the same issue.

Any suggestions?

Ps: I have heard that windows server 2012 has a better compatibility with low-end remote  fx solutions, maybe a upgrade is better?

Session host changes to custom Windows theme

One of our session host servers (2012 R2 with Desktop Experience installed) has recently been changing themes to a custom one instead of the Windows default. The issue is this custom theme contains some high contrast settings that paradoxically make things more difficult to read and some text to not appear at all unless selected. In some cases the anomalies show up even then the "Windows basic" theme is selected.

The only "fix" we have seen is to delete the user's profile, but the problem will re-occur eventually.

We could disable the Themes service but I would rather know what the cause of this is. Has anyone seen something similar or know where to look? Here is what we are seeing:

Hi

i need to size new hardware for support RDS (Terminal Server) for 100 concurrent users .

Each user uses Office 2007 and pdf.

Will be deploy over HyperV.

Later i saw some MS docs, these are the sizing i think, but i am not sure, please can some help me

Infrastructure:

  • Gateway Access: 8vCPU, 8GB RAM, 50Gb HDD  X 2 (H.A.)
  • Licensing: 1vCPU, 4GB RAM, 50Gb HDD  X 2 (H.A.)
  • Connection Broker: 1vCPU, 4GB RAM, 50Gb HDD, x 2 (H.A.)
  • HyperV: 2 vCPU , 4GB RAM

Physical Server x 2: 2 CPU 6 cores, 24Gb RAM , 200Gb hdd

Session host

  • 15 users for each core= 6,67 cores aprox 8 cores
  • 4000Mb RAM per user = 40Gb RAM
  • 64kbps per user = 6,6Gbps
  •  HD per user = ???
  • HyperV: 2 vCPU , 4GB RAM

Total Phisical: 2 cpu 6 cores , 4Gb+40Gb + 40 Gb (in case of failure 2 node) aprox 96Gb RAM, 8 nic (8Gb), x Gb HDD.

How to Disable Easy Print service

$

Hi,

we are using ts 2k8, but want to use the old normal printing way; were i install printer driver and the users print directly without the xps easy print redirect ion way.

reasons:

1- first, the printing is slow; before the user will hit the print button and the printer will start immediately printing, but now for redirecting to xps the print job size became larger and so it become slower.

2- i may live with slowness, but most important is.. many time the printer will not print with proper output. most of our printing is in arabic language, and when using easy print i can sometime print ok but many time only first page appear on arabic but after that all pages appear on Garbage not understandable characters, or the whole print will appear with unknown language.

3- i need to see other printers from other sessions, and i tried adding the user to the power user group but without result.

are there any way to solve these problems? or can i disable the easy print service? or should i move back to ts 2k3?

thanks in advance

Server 2012 - The program did not start on the remote computer for Non Domain Admins

I have deployed a RemoteApp from Server 2012. If run the RemoteApp as a user who is a member of the Domain Admins group it works correctly. If I run the RemoteApp as a user who is not a member of the Domain Admins group I get a message stating "The program did not start on the remote computer. For assistance, contact your system administrator."

If I log onto the Terminal Server and receive a full desktop, the application runs for for all users. There appears to be some difference on how security is handled through RemoteApp versus receiving a full desktop. I have searched over 30+ articles now and all seem to say the error occurs when the application is reliant on a shared or mapped drive which has not yet mapped. This application does not rely on a mapped drive. Thank you in advance for your help.

VPS windows server 2008r2 RDP security issue, need help!

system: VPS windows server 2008r2 at a remote location, directly exposed to internet

Administration is possible only viaRemoteDesktop.

I cannot disable&replace the default administrator account with a different username...which means I get a lot of brute force attacks.

I created rules in the firewall to limit the scope of the remote IP addresses, even limited the scope of the RDP rules down to my client IP address only.I tested the rules by trying to access the vps server from a wifi hotspot (starbucks was useful for once) and indeed I was not to rdp into myserver.

Yet I still find Nigerian , chinese taiwanese iranian and so on based IP addresses in the event log under audit failures.

I didn't want to limit the ip scope, because if my ISP changed my IP address ,I'd lose access to my VPS server... then again, why are the Nigerians still getting in?

Anyway,is there a way to replace the username and password login with a public/private key method like it is under Linux? Or perhaps is there a better solution?

Hope someone can help.

Thank you in advance!

Server 2012R2 RDWeb/RDGateway/Broker multiserver setup question

$

Hello,

We are in the process of designing a remote desktop farm:

1 RDweb server in DMZ

1 RDGateway Server in DMZ

3 RD Session Hosts in the internal network

1 Connection Broker in the internal network.

All separate machines (VM's).

Question is about the way traffic flows when a client logs on and resume an existing session:

In Windows 2008R2 the traffic works like show in the picture following this link:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc772418(v=ws.10).aspx

In this case the user gets an initial connection to a random Session Host, then connects to the Broker. If the user has an existing session on another Session Host, the client is redirected to that Session host.

In my case we have a 2FA authentication agent installed on the Session hosts. This results in the user having to logon twice because the Redirection to the other session host does not include the 2nd factor authentication.

Does Windows 2012R2 behave the same way? I cannot find how this process works in 2012R2. possibly the gateway in 2012R2 contacts the broker first to see if the user has an existing session and will point the user to the correct Session host which results in a single sign-on experience for the user.

Any info would be appreciated.

Hello,

I have set up a VPN on Windows Server 2012 r2 Datacenter using Hyper-V. Everything seems to be functioning ok using the Hyper V platform. I would like to know if it is possible to connect to a virtual machine on the VPN from a Windows 8.1 client using the widows login and if it is then how to go about it. If I could have some links to tutorials etc I would be greatful. I have not been able to find anything and I have been looking for days. I would really appreciate some assistance. Thanks in advance.

Port 3389 not listening

$

Windows Server 2003R2. Terminal Services is installed and started. Remote Desktop is Enabled. In the Terminal Services Manager session window, RDP-TCP is shown as being in a listening state. But when I run netstat -a, port 3389 does not show up. RD client cannot connect. Telnet or ssh to that port does not connect.

TCP is working fine: I can use logmein to view the server; I can VPN to the server, I can look at SMB shares once the VPN is up. No TCP filtering is active. The Windows Firewall is not active.

How can I get port 3389 going and be able to RDP in?

The registry is still showing port 3389 as the listening port.

I have removed and re-created the RDP-tcp port without any trouble and without success. The properties are set on defaults.

Remote Desktop devices in the device manager show as operating fine.

It used to work fine and just recently (sometime in January) it stopped working. As far as I know, no new software was installed at that time.

I have reviewed a bunch of stuff found in Google but none of it seems to help, so far.

Move Terminalserver License Server and change License Mode from per Device to per User...Licenses not allocated

Hi

We moved our Terminalserver License Server to a new Machine in the past the License Mode was per Device, on the new Server we installed 75 per User Licenses..

The new License Server is activated we got 3 Terminalserver some User connect via Windows 7 RDP to the TS the most connect via Thinclient, the License Mode on the TS is changed to per User now...

Now we got the Problem that many Users get the Message "No License Server is available" after check the new License Server only 25 per User Licenses are allocated, but we got around 60 active Users on our Terminalservers...

How can we cleanup the Old per Device Licenses are they stored somewhere in the Active Directory User Object?

thx

Outlook Indexing and RDS

$

Hi folks,

-We're running Outlook 2013 on our RDS pool machines (4x 2012 R2 servers).
-our Outlook mailboxes use Office365 accounts.
-Outlook is setup to cache 1 month (default is no caching but we've enabled it as it is the only way to get the yousendit plugin to work).
-Outlook Indexing however is disabled as adviced by our external consultants / MS Gold partner, using group policy : Computer configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Search\Prevent indexing Microsoft Office Outlook

The literal words of the consultants were : "you better disable indexing cause you might experience performance issues otherwise. Because Outlook will rebuild the index from scratch each time a user logs on on an RDS machine (with his/her roaming vxhd profile)".

Disabling Outlook indexing however results in advanced search features in Outlook being greyed out (I mean buttons "From", "subject", "more", etc. all greyed out).

My question is therefor multilayered :
-Is the consultant right about performance issues if we enable indexing ? Does it really have to rebuild from scratch with each logon ?
-If the best practice is indeed to disable indexing on an RDS machine : is there a workaround to get the advanced search features back ?

Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this.
Kind regards, Vincent

RDS performance on Azure

$

Hi there

We have a problem with unexpectedly poor performance in RDS on Azure.  We have scaled up our RDS Session Hosts to D4 but still have completely unacceptable performance, including severe lag and it taking as long as 20 seconds to open a basic webpage.  We currently have only 4 users per D4 machine and the users are only using Outlook, IE, and Chrome.

We are having some difficulty identifying the root cause of the poor performance because the underlying network and infrastructure are obfuscated underneath the virtualisation layer.

I've reviewed the documentation available around configuring RDS in Azure and we have followed this guidance.  Performance monitors on the RDS hosts don't show any bottlenecks in Disk I/O, Memory, or CPU.  Of course network bandwidth is more difficult to measure since we don't have visibility, but the network on the client side is not seeing much traffic so it seems unlikely to be network related.

An outline of our configuration is:
1x DC, File server (used as target for Folder Redirection) - Size D2
1x RDS Gateway, RDS Broker - Size D2
5x RDS Session Hosts - Size D4
1x Standard Azure Gateway, Dynamic Routing, 1 endpoint.  Site to Site vpn used for AD replication with HQ.
Users connect to RDS via RD Gateway.

Has anyone else suffered these un-predictable performance issues?  Do you have some troubleshooting steps we could take to identify the root of this issue?

I appreciate any guidance or assistance you are able to provide.  I'd love to be able to deploy RDS in Azure for a larger number of our customers but at the moment it's looking like we will have to invest in more hardware and traditional hosting.

Many thanks

system DSN not visible to 'domain users', why??

$

We have a Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services RDS farm.

I set up a 32-bit *system* DSN properly with the 32-bit ODBC app for Crystal Reports 2011, a 32-bit app.

When a domain user opens CR the newly created DSN does not appear in CR, though it appears for an admin user.

Why is the system DSN not visible to the domain users per se??

I checked the proper registry item and gave 'Domain Users' read permission to it, still no work.

Certain users need to see the DSN so they can configure the report to talk to the proper server, database, etc.

System DSNs are supposed to be visible/usable to all users.

What should I do??

Thank you, Tom

Some users report a change in font after latest updates

Dear all,

Some of our users complain that their Terminal Server sessions look different after installing the latest updates on the server... The server they are complaining about is a Windows Server 2003 server with Office installed on it... Not all users report this problem, but too many users report it to ignore it....
I have seen more users on the internet mentioning it, but I haven't found a reason or a solution yet.

Does anyone know?

Kind regards,
Erik

I had a single user doing this:

When setting the start the following program in a RDP client Connection, he goes to Desktop and don’t start anything.

With all other users, include the domain administrator he starts well. And more…

I clone the user in AD, and with the new user everything is OK.

Good Afternoon,

I 'm doing some tests Microsoft VDI peripheral leve, I need to know if I have to install all drivers and software for each device on the client computer for the session to start the virtual machine can access the same devices that are connected to the client computer

Is there any way to install all drivers in the virtual machine and access it without installing anything on the computer that is accessing it.
