A newbie trying to do a VDI using Hyper-V

Hi team,

We are a small company with 150 PCs and we would like to try the VDI using Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter.

We would like to go with a pilot of 20 people for now. We bought a brand new server HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 Server and a new Disk array HP StorageWorks Disk Enclosure D2600. We have already AD (2008 R2) installed on another Server.

The users will be using thier PCs and the VM storage location should be in the new HP Disk D2600 recently bought.

Could you please let me know what do you think? What are the best practices? What is the best approch to start this project? What would you do? What are the steps? Is there any way for the 20 people to keep thier OS and data and move to Virtual without any impact? I heard about something called Physical to Virtual?

I'm new into this and don't know how/where to start. Thank you very much for any information that you could provide

Thanks, Annie

Windows 2008 SP2 Terminal Services Manager not sorting idle time properly?

I could swear (with SP1) that if I click on the IdleTime column header to sort the idle time it used to work properly.

Now it's sorting by first number: 1, 10, 11, 1:02, 2, 3, etc...

Is this a new bug in Windows 2008 SP2? How does one report a bug?

Suddenly no licenses available for clients?

For the past several months we have had a server with remote desktop services installed being accessed by a few dozen users.

There is a separate server handling the licensing.

The license server is Win 2008 (x86)

The remote app server is Win 2008-R2

We purchased and installed 100 Terminal Services/RDS user CALs on the licensing server.

I am getting an error saying that there are no more licenses available for clients.

I don't understand, because we have less than 60 users and 100 licenses. When I pulled a report it showed only 38 CALs in use.

What am I missing here? All 100 CALs are per user, and they're all 2008/2008-R2.

RDS prompting for dual credentials on RDWEB

I’ve followed through this thread in detail.  We still cannot open published remoteapps.  At one point early on, we were able to – that was when we were using a self-signed certificate with only the internal server name.  Now we are trying to take it public and having troubles.

Starting the app fails when we get a new authentication dialog after clicking Connect on the rdp launcher. For example:

Notice that the remote computer (green oval) used to have our internal server name but this was fixed with the Set-RDPublishedName cmdlet.

But this still gets followed by:

Notice (red ellipse) that it’s trying to authenticate against the server’s internal name.  When I browse directly to the internal server from inside the network it’s presenting the public certificate.  This certificate is issued by a publically trusted authority, so it’s likely failing because of the name mismatch.  I cannot get past this dialog box by any means and so we do not have access.

The way I read this thread, I would have thought the Set-RDPublishedName cmdlet would have taken care of this, but it didn’t fully.  When I look at Deployment Properties -> RD Web Access, the URL for the web access server is still showing the internal URL.  This is where I think it’s going bad.

I’m wondering if I missed something.  I’ve seen the HA mode suggestions, but feel that is an egregious non-reversible work-around and would rather not go that route until 1. I’ve exhausted all the options and 2. Am sure that this would resolve our final roadblock.

Our deployment is Server 2012 Standard R2, and we used the simple deployment option, so everything is on a single server.  The certificate is a single name certificate for the public name and works fine when authenticating against the public name.  Please help. We are a non-profit and don’t have access to high end support resources.

Thanks,

Karim

Windows Update disabled on Terminal Services Server

No matter which administrative account I use, local or domain, Windows Update displays a "Windows Update is managed by your system administrator" message.

  • I have attempted to use the /admin switch when connecting to the server.
  • I have executed change user /install at the command prompt.
  • I have attempted to run from a console directly attached to the server.

I still cannot apply the updates.  The last update was in July 2014 and I need Windows Server 2008 SP2 installed for an application upgrade.  I did not install or configure this server.  The admin that did is no longer with the company and is not available for support.

Any advice is appreciated.

2012r2 RDS Farm RemoteApp User Problem

$

Hi All,

I am setting up a 6 server RDS farm with an RD Gateway in a DMZ.

I have designated 1 of the servers as a RemoteApp server. So it has 2 collections, 1 for full session desktops and the other for Published Apps. This server only has the RD Web and RDSH roles on it whilst the others (except for the gateway) have RDSH and RD Connection Broker roles and are operating in a HA farm.

Everything is working almost perfectly, users can access RDWeb from inside and outside of the network and run all apps published there. All users can logon to the connection broker and get thier sessions desktops. The problem comes when the users tries to establish the RemoteApp and Desktops feed from within thier RD Session.

The error returned is simply "An error Occurred. Contact your workplace administrator for assistance." Look in the event logs of the SH the users is logged onto it shows Event ID 1000 Error Code 0x80070005. I have googled everywhere and tried every possible solution I have found and nothing fixes the problem.

If I assign the users to the Domain Admins group then it works fine so I am guessing it has to be permissions somewhere.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Cheers
Dean

How to deploy connection (Mac OS X Yosemite to Windows RDS) through the RD Gateway with Two Factor authentication (Safenet OTP) on Session host?

Good day!

Could you please help me? How to deploy connection (Mac OS X Yosemite to Windows RDS) through the RD Gateway with Two Factor authentication on Session host? How to open an authentication dialog that is the same as in Windows when logging on to network resources in Windows (Windows Security)?
Our test environment: We have one RDS 2012 R2 server (all roles in one) and one session host in collection. On the session host installed Safenet Network Logon and it under GPO which disable all authentication, only OTP.

Unable to connect through RD Gateway with laptops/desktop but I am succesfully starting a Remotapp via the android RD Client app

Hello everyone, Since this week the laptops on my work which are not in the domain are unable to connect with Remotapps published through the RD Web access. Strangely enough we also have thin clients that are in the domain which are able to connect. We have also tested it from the outside of the network and again no luck connecting. But we are able to connect with an Android tablet through the RD Client app from Microsoft. We have no have been able to conclude that it is not a network related issue. We are running the RD Gateway on a single machine running NPS locally as it is needed by RDS. We have set it up as basically as possibly allowing everyone to connect. The week before it work perfectly and we have had nothing changed since then except for the fact that we have changed the RD web access public IP to the same as the RD Gateway's which is routed through a content switching which is working as intended. Anyone having the same problem?

hi,

any suggestion for RemoteApp icon placement on Windows 7 client Desktop created in Start menu.

Is it doable? Spoke to Microsoft on another case related to RDS 2012. They don't have any solution for this.

Did somebody try? Or the only solution is to distribute an instruction to user for find the icon in Start menu and manually copy it?

Thx.

Smartcard to remote desktop throws errors

Dear all,

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 domain and a Windows 7 Pro SP1 client. I can successfully login to domain using smartcard but when I try to connect from Windows 7 client to the domain server via RDP using smartcard authentication I get 2 errors.

These are the steps to connect via remote desktop

1. Open Remote Desktop Connection, I select Smartcard credetian

2. Enter PIN, Connect

3. The remote desktop displays and 3 consecutive errors are thrown

http://i60.tinypic.com/23lz58h.jpg , http://i59.tinypic.com/2z54y89.png

3.1 "The system could not log you on. The requested key container does not exist on the smart card"

3.2 "Windows is searching for drivers for your card"

3.3 "Smart card errors. The card supplied required drivers that are not present on this system. Please try another card."

On the Win 2008 R2 server I receive the following error in Events: "An error occured while retrieving a digital certificate from the inserted smart card. They keyset is not defined"

The smartcard is a Feitian PKI one. I have installed in the client the smartcard drivers but not on the domain server. I also tried to install smartcard drivers on the domain server but RDP threw the same errors.

I can provide both certutil -spinfo and certutil -csatest if needed.

What can I do ?

RemoteApp support for WP, iOS and Android?

$

Currently we have single Windows Server 2008 (non R2) that is hosting some applications that we have published as remoteapps to end users. We have used remoteapps only from windows computers but things are changing.

Is there official Microsoft RDP client to WP, iOS and Android that really supports RemoteApps? And is it free? Any limitations that we should know?

We are also thinking that we upgrade to new Windows Server 2012 R2 and start using RemoteApps from there. What are the biggest improvements to RDS when moving from 2008 to 2012 R2?

RemoteApp planning

Just installed Windows Server 2012 R2 and I'm starting to plan for deployment of Remote Deskop Services. There will be only this one single server that hosts all the needed roles for RDS. I have few applications that I want to publish for users via RemoteApp.

I have internal users (Windows 7 PC's) and external users (Android and iOS tablets).

I have active directory domain named company.local and this RDS server is named rds01.company.local.

RDS installation seems to be quite easy, but I have some questions regarding to configuration.

I need certificate from public CA, but I'm unsure what names I need in this certificate. I'm planning to publish this RemoteApp service for outside users with name ra.company.com. Do I need some other names in the certificate? What are my options to deal with internal name of server because ad domain is named .local and that is causing problems with public CA certificate.

Unable to access terminal server

Hello all! I'm not particularly tech savvy, but here is my problem:

I was set up as a user by my co-worker on a Windows 2008 terminal server. This was done so that I can run Open Office from the terminal server. However, when I try to log in using Windows XP I am unable to, but I do have access to the reports share on the server through the network. The terminal server is on the same system as the reports share. Could this be an issue with the licensing, or what? How does the licensing thing even work, exactly?

Like I mentioned previously, I am not very tech-savvy at all so if you could provide very simple step-by-step guidelines for troubleshooting that would be awesome and very much appreciated. Thanks!

Windows CE 5 connecting to Windows Server 2008 R2 RDS - Security error

$

We have an RDS server (Windows Server 2008 R2). When connecting devices running windows CE 5 to this server we get an error, "Because of a security error, the client could not connect to the remote computer. Verify that you are logged on to the network, and then try connecting again". This is one of three RDS servers. Connecting the same device to one of the other servers works with no issues.

I've used the following link to troubleshoot,

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2477176

- RDS is set allow connections from any version (less secure).

- Security layer is set to RDP Security Layer

Any other ideas from anyone?

RDP Gateway Custom Authentication plugin and ActiveX Control

$

We are implementing a custom authentication plugin for RDP gateway according to the sample provider by Microsoft.

We are now trying to customize the RDP Web Access logon page to use the ActiveX RDP control to pass the token information.

We have tried using serialized RDP file using IMSRDPClientShell and It fails with -2147012890 on MsRdpClientShell.Launch() when the parameter is set to gatewaycredentialssource:i:5 as required by  the sample. If the value is below 5 this works.

We have also tried with the  MSRDPClient8 interface by setting the required properties( on the MSRDPClientTransportSettings3 we got an error message:

To use this program or computer, you must first log on to an authentication website. Contact your network administrator for assistance

This works if we invoke directly the RDP client application.

How can we pass this parameter to the control so it can be sent to the gateway ?

How to change password in RDP session

In my situation all RDP clients are remote over the internet. their passwords expire every 60 days. How can the user change their password before it expires? CTRL ALT DEL will not work because it takes you to a password change on your local machine. Note the users have no access to a desktop only a single application is forced to run through the user profile.

Lock down applications based on computer groups

$

Hi Guys

The RDS 2012 environment (remoteapp only) I am currently creating will be a mix of Office 2013 Pro Plus and Standard. After advice from my MS partner I have installed Office Pro Plus on all 7 RDSH's in the farm. Everyone will have access to the standard applications (word, excel, outlook, onenote, publisher, powerpoint) and a small number of pro users will also have access to the proplus application (Access, InfoPath) as well, secured buy security groups and remoteapp user assignment. Additionally, I have compared the advanced features of office pro/standard via the Office Customization Tool and made sure any pro features are turned off during initial installation

The Problem

Because Office licenses with SA are per device, I need to figure out a way to allow access to the pro apps on a per device basis. Essentially 5 pro users can access Pro from their office computer or a home computer BUT not from any other domain computer/hotdesk. I am trying to figure out a way of controlling that via Group Policy

If user logs into computer group ABC then apply group policy with applocker rules to RDSH.

Something like that. I think the problem is linking the client computer with the group policy affecting the RD Session host.

Hopefully that makes sense

Thanks
