Mapping printer drivers in RDS 2012

$

Two questions, here:

I have a remote user with an HP P3015 printer.  They use RDS to access Win Server 2012.

Easyprint is absolute garbage and causes huge printing delays, so I would like to simply use the proper driver.  This has worked well for other users, but for this particular printer, less so.  There is an included driver called HP LaserJet P3011/P3015 PCL6 Class Driver which sounds like it should be the correct driver.  On the user's side, however, it's just called "HP LaserJet P3011/P3015 PCL6" - I'm assuming (from my past experience with server 2003) this name discrepancy is what's preventing it from actually detecting and using this driver, and instead defaulting to easyprint.

In the past I would just use the NTPrintSubs.inf file to map "HP LaserJet P3011/P3015 PCL6" = "HP LaserJet P3011/P3015 PCL6 Class Driver" but that seems like a pretty archaic way to go about it - there has to be a better way, right?  I considered simply downloading and installing the driver from HP, however the only driver options they present for that particular printer are universal print drivers, which I'm assuming were so named because they universally do not work worth a damn.

Second question: When I go into the print manager, the only printers I see are from my own RDS session.  This can't possibly be correct, right?  How do I get my user's redirected printers to show?

How do I deploy an Access Project under Windows Terminal Service.

$

I know from http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/access-help/ways-to-deploy-an-access-project-HP005275189.aspx?CTT=1 that "Using Microsoft Windows Terminal Server, each user can have a copy of the Access project file in his or her individual user data space defined in the user's profile on the Terminal Server. You can copy the Access project into each user's default application data folder and when a user logs in through Terminal Server, each user gets a personal copy of the Access project file."

But HOW do I do that?  I'm not the SysAdmin of the Server, just the Software Developer.  I've have never dealt with Terminal Server before.  I expected the Client's SysAdmin would know how - but he doesn't.

Is there any way these files can be deployed automatically for each new User, a default user's folder perhaps or a script that runs when new users are setup.

Does every user have to be setup under Windows Terminal Server, or can you just give someone the login details?

Unable to install Office 2007 on Windows 2003 Terminal Server

I have two Windows 2003 Terminal Services that a couple users connect to.  They have Office 2003 Enterprise installed.  I'm attempting to upgrade them to Office 2007 Enterprise.

While logged into the TS Serve as the domain administrator, from a command prompt, I'm typing:

change user /install and I see the message "user session is ready to install applications"

I run the Office 2007 setup and I see the Upgrade or Customize button.

When I click upgrade, nothing happens.  When I click customize then the upgrade button.  Nothing happens.  I can click the button all day and the software never actually starts working.  It's like a dead button.

So, I'm sure I'm missing something here - but what?  Does anyone know what's going on?  If you need more information, please do let me know.

Thank you in advance for your reply.

RDS 2012 2 Factor Authentication

Hi all,

I'm trying to deploy an RDS 2012 solution with 2FA (at the Web/Gateway layer) but I'm struggling to find out what the recommended/supported way of doing this is given:

  • TMG is end of life
  • UAG doesn't support publishing RemoteApps from 2012

I'd really appreciate any advice/assistance in doing this....

Many thanks

Mike

Windows Server 2008 Remote Desktop lag issue

Hello,

I have Widows Server 2008 R2 with all the latest updates installed and running inside ESXI 5.1 I am having some serious issues with lag when I remote desktop into this station. It seems as if screen is not refreshing fast enough. I am experiencing this issue both on LAN and WAN. This morning it was so slow my screen literally froze. After I have restarted this box, it started to work fine again. I noticed that I have to restart it every 2 days in order to fix this issue. I know there are a lot of threads with the similar issue but nothing seems to help here. I see no errors or events that can pertain to this problem on both Windows and ESXI sides. My CPU and Memory are running very low so doubt that's the issue. IPv6 has been disabled on Windows station.

Can't get SSO working properly Server 2012 / Windows 8 clients

$

Full disclosure, I am not as well versed in Server 2012 setup as I should be.

I am trying to get SSO working properly on Windows 8 clients, connecting to an RemoteApp hosted on a virtual Server 2012 running all the necessary RDP server roles. I consistently have to manually enter credentials on the client machine if the remote session gets disconnected, or to connect the first time the user logs into the client.

What I am looking for is a step-by-step explanation of how I should properly configure my servers to support this. My understanding is that a Trusted certificate is required, so I did install the AD CS role and configure that. I also apparently needed to configure IIS and then somehow use that to create or distribute the certificates? I'm lost at this point. At first I couldn't get the remoteapps to even attempt to load on the clients, as I would get warnings about not being able to connect to non-trusted machines. I managed to get around that and get the remoteapp to load, but I am still having credential issues, I believe.

Any guidance would be appreciated. I am about to scrap the whole thing and start the server install over from scratch - I feel like I may have done more harm than good just throwing everything I could find at this problem to see what sticks.

Allowing an Application to notify all logged in users

We have an application that is a Safety Alert Application.

When the application is installed on our 2008 R2 RDS server, the alerts appear for the Administrator logged into the console, but not for any users.

I have tried converting the app to a service, but this didn't fix the issue.

Are there ways we can make this function.  It worked on server 2003 terminal services.

Server 2012 R2 RDS and Remote App

$

Hi,

I am testing the new R2 RDS functionality, however whilst RemoteApp is working very well with the connection broker it seems that all connections are being brokered.

Is it possible to have the broker only balance the remoteapps and not the desktops? It seems to be balancing all RDP connections which means that accessing the individual server consoles is impossible as it is always connecting the open desktop connection and not allowing me to RDP to all the servers in the collection. This makes updating applications on the servers rather difficult.

Thanks,

Phil.

Remote App Manager - A critical component cannot be loaded

$

Good Morning All,

I have been happily loading up a Windows Server 2008 R2 box with apps and publishing them via the RemoteApp Manager, I was changing an icon in the Remote App Properties dialog box and got an error after clicking ok, the error message was "A critical component cannot be loaded. The operation completed successfully." I now receive this error message every time I open the RemoteApp Manager and no RemoteApp programs are listed.

I have restarted the server, uninstalled the last few applications that were installed. The only thing I can think of is that I have somehow stored an illegal character in the icon path field or something similar and I am at a loss as to what to do or where to find this.

RD Connection Broker with 2 Farms and RemoteApp

We currently have a Connection Broker configured with our RDS Session Host farm but now need to add a second farm that will provide RemoteApps only.

I know that a single Connection Broker can handle more than one farm but can it handle RemoteApps from the second one only?

Cheers for now

VDI Deployment with RemoteFX using RDWeb and RDGateway - Server 2012

$

Hi everyone - I'm having a bit of an issue with RemoteFX in a VDI deployment utilizing the RDWeb and RDGateway roles.

I have a VDI deployment in a Windows Server 2012 environment where my Connection Broker and Virtualization Host are on the internal network and my RDWeb and RDGateway server (combined roles) sits in the DMZ (between two Cisco firewalls). Firewall rules are properly opened (although I think I don't have the UDP port open that RDGateway uses)

I'm using a Cisco UCS box with 256GB of RAM, plenty of storage and an nVidia GRID K2 card for RemoteFX. The drivers are installed on RDVH. RemoteFX is enabled and working on all the virtual machines (the adapter is added and being used) and it seems to run fine if I launch an RDP session from my local client to a VM in the VDI collection/pool. As a note I am running Win7 Ent SP1 w/RDP 8.0 client with local group policies modified to allow RDP 8.0. Local group policies were also modified on the RDVH, RDCB, and RDWeb/Gateway server for RemoteFX and RDP 8.0.

In addition, I also know that the RemoteFX adapter is working because when I launch an RDP session from my local client to a VM in the VDI pool I see the RemoteFX adapter in Device Manager. I also ran dxdiag and I can see that is properly using "Microsoft RemoteFX Graphics Device - WDDM" with driver version WDDM 1.0. My settings on my RDP client (mstsc.exe) is set to use LAN 10mbps or higher. Oh, and Aero Glass works via RDP.

Alright, here's where the strange issue appears:

I deployed the RDWeb server (as per the requirement of the VDI deployment option in Server 2012) and continued to install the RDGateway role on the same server that sits in the DMZ. I force my clients to connect via SSL using the RDGateway with firewall rules opened and the SSL cert working properly. Connections to my VDI pool work just fine and I can connect to the SAME VM that I previously mentioned above. My VMs in the VDI pool are assigned and managed. And as far as I know I am connecting via port 443. Of course, the RDCB manages all the connections so it appears that I'm "technically" connecting to the RDCB and not my previous VM, even though I know I am connected to my assigned VM via the Hostname command.

Anyway, When I connect to the VM via the icon that get's published in the VDI deployment, I can see that in the logs that I'm connecting at 10mbps.

When I check device manager I see the "Microsoft RemoteFX Graphics Device - WDDM" is available but when I check dxdiag it does NOT appear that I am using WDDM. Instead it shows that I'm using "RDPUDD Chained DD" with an "Unknown" driver model.

To further troubleshoot this I checked in the RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS application log on the VDI VM and noticed this warning that leads me to believe that RemoteFX is not working via RDGateway/RDWeb. There were no events whatsoever in any of the other RemoteDesktopServices logs.

Anyone have any ideas what the issue could be? Is RemoteFX not supported via RDGateway? Which would kind of be silly.

Hi

When logging in as a remote user on 2012 Remote Desktop Server, I notice when the user runs a website with Flash required or even a video embedded, I get - An Add on for this website failed to run, is this a IE setting to re-configure?  Flash is asking to be installed, but is this not part of IE with 2012?

Thanks
