RDS licensing servers HA

I'm trying to understand the correct way to configure two licensing servers for high availability, in per user mode.

I have 100 users, and 100 Cal's in total. I have two licensing servers; lic1 and lic2, and my understanding is lic2 would only ever be used if lic1 was unavailable (eg: server was turned off)

Which of the two options below is correct to use, and would not breach the Remote Desktop Services license terms?

Option 1:

Install 50 Cal's on lic1 and 50 on lic2.

lic1 would over-issue licences because I'm using per user, and issue 100 licences even though only 50 Cal's are installed, but this would be ok because in total we own 100 cal licences

Option 2:

Install all 100 licences on lic1.

If lic1 ever went offline, lic2 would over issue all 100 licences but this is ok because it is temporary while we fix lic1 or move the cal licences over to lic2

Or is there an option that I have not thought of which should be used?

Also, where can I actually find a copy of the Remote Desktop Services license terms online?

HA for Azure MFA server

Hello Team,

The full RDS with MFA setup is deployed on Azure with Azure AD and Azure Azure Active Directory domain services. We have slave MFA server but it is disabled at the moment and not taking any replication.

We have 2 load balanced RDS gateway servers and NPS installed on the same and both servers pointing to same radius client which is our MFA server.

Now, we have to add another MFA server and load balance it. My question is which load balancer we should use, Azure internal load balancer or an NLB setup.

Once the load balancer is setup, what all configurations I need to perform on NPS and MFA server.

Unpublish RemoteApp application while users are connected?

1) Can you unpublish an application while users are connected? If so, what happens? Are they kicked off, or do they continue their session, but no new sessions can be started?
2) If you cannot unpublish an application while users are connected, is there a good way to disconnect the users from server with a message from Server Manager?

Edge-Chromium availability for Server 2019 RDS

Is there a release of Edge-Chromium that is compatible with Server 2019 RDS environment?

My client ditched Edge for Firefox, but I was able to convince them to return to Edge with the new release.  We are deploying remote desktops and want to standardise accross all paltforms.

If there isnt a version for general release is one planned?

Window/GUI artifacts on RDS client (RD Web Access). Bug in screen refreshing?

We are accessing a 3rd party app that uses Remote Desktop Web Access (Azure back end).  I have no access to their system other than technical support.  On two Windows 10 client machines the RD client fails to refresh the screen correctly.  When I first log in to the app, I expect to see a document window within the main window.  It doesn't appear until I grab the title bar and move it slightly.  Also, maximizing the window fails; it paints a "window" on the screen but there are lines and graphic artifacts that should not be there.  Only by stretching the window with the handles can I "maximize" the window.

Remote desktop to my own server works fine.  Only with this RD Web Access application do I see this problem.

I've tried changing resolutions, updating drivers, clean installs.  Nothing fixes it.  Calls to the app technical support had no success.

Keyboard issues with windows server 2019 RemoteApp

Hello,
I have published a game via a RDSWeb HTML5 client on windows server 2019, when I access the web interface to run the game the keyboard does not work correctly, all the characters have to be accompanied by at or cruel to be recognized by the game, also when I choose an Azerty keyboardIt works like it’s qwerty.
The weird thing, is that when I tried with notepad, everything works correctly, so I think it’s a keyboard layout synchronization problem.
Is there any way to adjust the keyboard layout according to the client session?

Strange problem from non-domain computers

I've got a small "lab environment" with two 2019-servers and one laptop at home.
One of the servers works just as intended, and I'm allowed to RDP in to it from whatever I want to using the user account I want to. (If it matters, I've also verified that users that shouldn't be allowed to RDP can't do so.)
On the other server things don't act as I  want...
I can RDP into it from non-domain computer (for instance my work computer which is member of another domain) using the administrator account, but using the account created for this purpose won't work - I'm getting a bad credentials error..
Using the same user from either the domain-joined laptop or from the other server, the user can get in just fine.

(Yes, I've tried hundreds of times from different computers, both in the network, through VPN and through WAN with port forwarding to that server. I am 100% sure the password is correct.)

Any ideas what this could be?   I've also tried to add the domain\user to "allow log on through remote desktop services" in the default GPO, and I've added this user to the list of users allowed to RDP into the server (and yes, I know this isn't usual - it's just something I've tried in order to get through the problem...)

License server

Hi,

we usually install only one license server.

If the license server fails, does the RDS solution stop working?

Could I install the function in another one and activate the same licenses activated in the first one that was installed configured and leaves standby?

My question is: what risk of losing the license server? What impacts on a scenario that is already working.

Thank you.

"Caps Lock Is On" in middle of screen

Experiencing issues where end-users log in to 2016 Server RDS farm with 3 session hosts and, while logged in and working a bubble like pop-up much like a comment shows up in the middle of the screen stating "Caps Lock is On". Unable to get rid of until rebooting. End-users are for the most part using 10zig thin clients and when this occurs Caps Lock is NOT on. RDS session hosts are VMWare VM's so no third-party keyboard tools to speak of. Occasionally if a user logs out but doesn't reboot the message will stay on the screen until someone clicks somewhere on the screen. Tried ease of accessibility, notifications and nothing. Also tried to unplug the keyboard while connected and pop-up remains.  Happens on all three session hosts - no updates that I am aware of that precipitated this.

Thanks in advance!

Ideas to run apps on server?

Hello,

We have a 2016 server with data on it along with statistical applications such as SAS, R, Stata etc. Currently employees use a Batch submission tool to submit commands to the server and run those apps. We are trying to move away from using the tool and were wondering what do others use to have their employees be able to run the apps on the server? Is Windows RDS a replacement tool for what we're looking for? Does RDS allow you to block access to the C: drive so remote users don't see it at all? Any advice or suggestion is appreciated!

Thank you

RDP to Azure AD joined computer

I am trying to connect to a remote computer that is Azure AD joined. Both the client and host computer are running Windows 10 version 1809. Currently I am connecting without NLA to be able to authentication myself, but I would like to connect with NLA.

According to this article: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/client-management/connect-to-remote-aadj-pc this should be possible, providing you use the username format "AzureAD\JeroenDeWit" to connect. However, this results in an error stating "Your credential did not work. Remote machine is AAD joined. If you are signing in to you work account, try using your work email address." I can't post a screenshot because my account is not verified yet.

Other guides like https://cloudbuilder.io/documentation/Windows10Pro-RDP-AzureADJoined/ also suggest authenticating without NLA.

Am I doing something wrong or is Microsoft doing something wrong? :)

RDS 2019 Deployment Virtual machine requirements

Hi Experts!

We are planning to deployed a single server RDS 2019 in Virtual machine for RemoteApps environment only. The only resources that we have is 2 virtual machine which below :

1. RD Session Host (VM)  - Role  - RDCB, RD WeB ,and Session Host

2. RD Licensing Server (VM -Role -  Licensing and RD Gateway.

My question is

What are the recommended or basic system requirements for both Virtual machine acting as newly deployed RDS in our environment. No existing RDS program installed as in fresh as new.

Specs required for both VM's  mostly to session host server (VM). ?

Is it required to promote the RDS server s DC before to install the Remote desktop services Role ( RDCB, WeB, and Session host) for standard deployment for remoteapps only ?

Thanks

RDS deployment does not load after change active RD broker

Hello, we have RDS farm 2012, and decided upgrade to 2019.

Configuration:

RD Web Access 2 servers was 2012 upgraded to 2019

RD GateWay 2 servers was 2012 upgraded to 2019

RD Connection Broker HA is 2 servers 2012 and one 2019

RD Session Host 3 servers 2012

So what happen... we decided first create VM with 2019 servers and add to RD Connection Broker HA, first server added successfully, now RD connection broker HA have 3 servers, 2 x 2012 and 1 x 2019. When we change RD broker server 2019 to active, then Server Manager in RDS deployment shows just "Connecting to the RD Connection Broker server..." and that message showing long time and Server Manager does not loads RDS deployment.

So maybe we missed something when we added new RD broker server 2019?

RDWeb redirect classic to HTML5 client landing page.

Hi All,

I've installed and published the latest HTML5 client version to my RDWeb portal server, tested and happy it works well.

How do I automatically redirect all users who have been using https:\\<MyRDWebServer>/RDWeb to the new HTML5 client so that they are forced to use the new HTML5 client only?

I've tried this...

Set-WebConfiguration system.webServer/httpRedirect "IIS:\sites\Default Web Site" -Value @{enabled="true";destination="https://<domainname>/rdweb/pages/webclient";exactDestination="false";httpResponseStatus="Permanent";childOnly="true"};

http://microsoftplatform.blogspot.com/2018/01/html5-client-for-microsoft-remote.html

Restarted Default Website, reset IIS, Rebooted server...no change...

Using the classic URL - https://<MyRDWebLocation>/RDWeb - still loads the classic RDWeb landing page?

I also amended this command to be"...destination="https://<MyRDWebLocation>/rdweb/webclient/index.html" as per the actual latest webclient URL but still no dice...

Thanks,

durrie.

RDS Session hosts fail to join farm after reboot

Hello,

we have the following RDS environment:

2 x RDS Broker (Server 2019)

1 x RDS Gateway (Server 2016)

1 x Collection with 3 Server Windows 2016

1 x Collection with 3 Servers Windows 2019

After rebooting a server from the 2019 collection, it randomly fails to join the farm. The issue does not seem to occur on the 2016 collection.

If everything works fine, we can see the following event on one of the broker servers:

Source: TerminalServices-SessionBroker, Evend ID:776“RD Connection Broker successfully added an RD Session Host Server Server1.xxx.intranet to Farm XXX.”

But sometimes there’s no event logged for the server. To make the server work again we have found a workaround which is to not allow/allow new connections from the RDS broker.

After that we can see the following Events on the session hosts:

Source: TerminalServices-SessionBroker-Client, Event ID: 1280“Remote Desktop Services failed to join the Connection Broker on server Broker1.xxx.intranet;Broker2.xxx.intranet

Error: Current async message was dropped by async dispatcher, because there is a new message which will override the current one.”

Source: TerminalServices-SessionBroker-Client, Event ID: 1281Remote Desktop Services successfully joined a farm on the Connection Broker server Broker1.xxx.intranet;Broker2.xxx.intranet

Our 2019 Terminalservers have been cloned from a server which was already member of an existing RDS deployment. Not sure if this might help finding the issue.

Changing language on remote Apps

Hello! :)

I have published some apps to RDweb (see link).

I would like to know if it is possible to change the language in the apps via a GPO or something like that.

Because there will be users from different countries, so it would be nice i the language changed to french when a french user logged on and to german when a german user logged on, and so on.

Windows 7 mstsc.exe display Photoshop remoteapp color picker window uncorrectly?

I use an old win7 computer as client to run PhotoShop 2018 remoteapp in Windows 2016 RDS Server. When I click out Color Picker window is Gradient Editor window, it shows wrong position. I checked window properties by SPY++, and found that the Color Picker window has WS_POPUP style but with both parent and owner windows. Its parent is Gradient Editor window and owner is whole photoshop top-level window. On normally win7 computer its parent should be null and owner window is Gradient Editor window.

On win10 with same RDP file, everything is ok.

My win7 rdp client version is 8.1 and  I known another win7 computer with same rdp client there's no such problem.

Number of connections to this computer are limited

I have a client that recently has upgraded their DC to Windows Server 2019 earlier this year. It is also used for Remote Desktop access for a handful of staff members. They have 10 user CALS for RDP access. Roughly 25 people have the ability to use the Remote Desktop, it's understood they are limited to have 10 concurrent users. Some will just X out of the session and others will properly sign out.

Every so often users get a message that states the following.

The number of connections to this computer is limited and all connections are in use right now. Try connecting later or contact your system administrator.

I've tried changing the licensing server to license via phone instead of online as that was one of the options to try but still did not help. I've been told that the licensing model may have changed on 2019 and that you literally must have a license for every individual requiring access to Remote Desktop.

My workaround is that I generally have to restart the server or Remote Desktop services to allow those individuals blocked back in. It seems to be triggered when an individual "X"s out of the session instead of properly signing out there session.

Their old Server 2008 R2 server didn't ever have this issue, so that is why I'm believing it to me a licensing issue.

Thank you.

Connection to RDSH on Windows 7 SP1 via Application Proxy

$

Hi,

I've recently setup a 2019 RDS build to allow some of our school based people access into our corporate resources but I'm having issues with Windows 7 devices accessing it externally. Mostly everything has gone well with the exception of Win7 devices.

With a domain joined machine Windows 10 and Windows 7 builds both work fine. Accessing RDS externally (going via the Azure App Proxy) Windows 10 works fine, MacOS works fine but I can't get any Windows 7 clients to connect. It logs into the RDWeb page and shows the desktop session icon but on clicking it produces an error:

'Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because the Remote Desktop Gateway server's certificate has expired or has been revoked"

The certificates haven't expired but I'm not 100% which cert is being used between the client and the Gateway. We have a wildcard configured for the domain so the RDWeb page is using that cert but I'm not sure what is happening between the client and gateway.

As Windows 7 connects fine while a machine that is connected to the domain (I have a Win7 build in a VM on-prem for testing) I'm sure it isn't an issue with Windows 7 as such but I'm struggling to locate the root cause and come up with a fix for it. I'm thinking it must be something like a certificate (as the non-domain device wouldn't have the same as the domain joined device) or possible a setting(s) which are getting applied to the client via GPO. I need to try to get this working via non-domain joined machines as a lot of staff are having to work from home using personal devices, which a number are Windows 7.

I've tried multiple KB fixes. Reg fixes etc all which haven't helped so I'm hoping someone here has some previous experience in this area to point me towards things which I can check off my list. I'm afraid I've got about 2 weeks of RDS experience under my belt so far so if i'm missing something obvious to others, give a guy a break :)
