$

When users log in to the server using remote desktop, the following message is displayed:

Remote Desktop License Problems

"There is a problem with your remote desktop license and the session will be disconnected in 60 minutes"

The license has been added to:

1.Control panel \ Administrative Tools \ Remote Desktop Services \ Remote Desktop Licensing Manager

- activation was successful
- 10 licenses installed, - 10 active licenses

2. Local policy editor

Administrative Templates> Windows Components> Remote Desktop Services> Remote Desktop Session Host> Licensing

a) Use the specified Remote Desktop license servers> enabled + entered hostname

b) Set the Remote Desktop licensing mode> enabled & set Per User

What's wrong ?

On Friday was correct right after adding the license.
However, today, Monday, users receive the message: "There is a problem with your remote desktop license and the session will be disconnected in 60 minutes"

Please help.

Windows 2016 - Start menu / task bar freeze with spinning donut

$

Hi,

We're using Windows 2016 with the RD Session Host installed.  Not a complete farm with Broker / Web / GW but only the RD Session Host.

We do not have User Profile Disk.

The issue is that sometimes, a user logon on the RDSH Server and then, the start menu & task bar are unavailable... the spinning donut is turning and turning...

When it happen, the folder "%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Packages" has only 2 folders and not 15 as the others.

I know there is a known issue for peoples that are using User Profile Disk is this can be fixed by running this command:

$packages=Get-ChildItem-Path"$env:USERPROFILE\AppData\Local\Packages"

if($packages.count-lt14){

$apps=  Get-ChildItem-Recurse-Path"C:\Windows\SystemApps","C:\Windows\ImmersiveControlPanel","C:\Windows\PrintDialog","C:\Windows\MiracastView"-Include"AppXManifest.xml"

Foreach($appin$apps){

Add-AppxPackage-DisableDevelopmentMode -Register"$app"-Verbose}

}

Else{

$null}

But in this case, this script is not working.

If i delete the user profile and the same use logon again, the same issue occur.

Also, when it occur, in task manager, i can see there is 3 "explorer" process associated with my profile that are "Suspended"

The others explorer process are from other users that are currently logged on the server.

Any hints ?

Windows 2016 - Display setting cant be changed from a remote session (aka dpi scaling)

$

Hi,

Windows 2008 r2 has a "hotfix" allowing users to change their dpi scaling at will

Windows 2016 has not (yet ?). Is the topic not so "hot" according to Microsoft ?

I think it is.

Apparently W2016 server is supposed to pull the dpi scaling from the client.

- What if the client not compatible ? ( I have enabled RDP 8 on a W7 box and its dpi is not pulled from the client).

- What about locked Thin-Clients (Dell Wyse) where regular users have no rights to change the Thin-client dpi ?

- What if someone wants different scaling across different RDP session ?

Beside W2016 RDP poor performances, this is another serious "no-go" to W2016 RDSH.

BTW What's the rate of W2016 RDSH migration from W2008 R2 ?

Around 450 RemoteApp Sessions limit on Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services Session Host without apparent bottleneck - RDS Broker scalability issue

Hi

We have an RDS farm with the following set-up (using Windows Server 2012 R2) to serve RemoteApps to our clients:

  • Two RDS Gateways
  • Four Session Hosts (24-physical processors and 512 GB ram each)
  • User profile disks enabled
  • One RDS Licensing Server
  • Two RDS Broker Servers

The problem we are facing is that it seems like there's a "magic number" of about 450 connections (fluctuating between 445 and 455) per each Session Host.

Once this number is reached users start to report:

  • General session slowness (slow update of Remote App window contents)
  • Some users are unable to log in to their (new) session
  • Some users are connecting but presented with "empty" screen
  • Some users are getting (randomly?) disconnected

When the issue happens, based on performance counters, the CPU is in range of 30%, RAM has about 200 GB free.

Processor Queue length during the day is mostly within "<2 range", with ~30% of the time going higher up to 6 intermittently (not consistently), and with ~1.5% of the time being more than 10. (There's no continuous queue build-up) So our understanding that this is not a CPU/RAM limitation.

There were no limits on concurrent number of sessions set on Session Hosts as of SW side to my knowledge. Review of Application/System/RdpCoreTs Logs does not show anything really suspicious at the time the limit is hit, the errors/warnings in event logs do not correlate with timing of the problem.

We've been investigating this issue for a several weeks now and it's still absolutely unclear what could cause such limitation. Maybe someone experienced similar issues.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Required firewall ports between RD Session Host + RD Broker

I am having some difficulties in getting RDS to work in a highly restricted environment in Azure where all network traffic needs to be explicitly allowed in firewall rules.

In the configuration, the RD Brokers and RD Session Hosts are on different subnets.

I have reviewed documentation such as:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/16164.rds-2012-which-ports-are-used-during-deployment.aspx

https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Enterprise-Mobility-Security/RD-Gateway-deployment-in-a-perimeter-network-Firewall-rules/ba-p/246873

I tried allowing outbound TCP 5985 from the RD Session hosts to the RD Brokers.

That didn't help.

The only thing that works is allowing all outbound traffic between the RD Session Hosts and the RD Broker subnets.

Azure isn't very user friendly when it comes to trying to figure out exactly what traffic is being blocked by NSGs.

Can anyone assist with exactly what traffic needs to be allowed outbound from the RD Gateway to the RD Broker?

Thanks.

Remote Desktop Services issue after installation fail

Hi all,
I have an issue with Windows Server 2016 Role - Remote Desktop Services.
Some time ago I tried install this role, but installation failed with errors and installation task was freezed. Even when I reboot the OS, the task re-start again with installation failed.
I stopped installation task in task manager, and forget about this, till now.
Now I can't login Remotely to any server accounts.
Role is not installed:
[ ] Remote Desktop Services
[ ] Remote Desktop Connection Broker
    [ ] Remote Desktop Gateway
    [ ] Remote Desktop Licensing
[ ] Remote Desktop Session Host
[ ] Remote Desktop Virtualization Host
[ ] Remote Desktop Web Access

But I have installed Remote Desktop Licensing Service.

After local login I have message "The RD Licensing grace period has expired and Licensing mode for the Remote Desktop Session Host server has not been configured. Licensing mode must be configured for continuous operation."

Also I don't have installed Remote Desktop Licensing Diagnoser/Manager

How can remove this?

Windows Server 2012 r2 - Remote audio not always comming through to client

$

We have a Windows Server 2012R2 server running on VMware vSphere 5.5. When connecting with a RDP client, the audio redirect is established each time (playback & recording), but remote audio doesn't always play and recording isn't registered. It works like 3 out of 10 times a user logs in, user independent.

Sometimes when the user logs in it works, but most of the time it doesn't. When it works, the audio bar in the "playback devices" window lights up like it should. This is not the case when it's not working, it does display the remote audio device but the audio bar remains faded when sound is playing.

So its like the audio is playing, but not on the "remote audio" devices, even though it is the only one listed in the session.

  • Desktop experience feature enabled
  • Windows Audio & Endpoint Builder services are set to automatic
  • Enabled local policies: Audio & video redirection, Recording redirection, Playback quality - high
  • RDP client config: audioqualitymode:i:1
  • USB headset both Logitech and Plantronics
  • Client independent: HP Thinclient (win8.1), and two Fujitsu desktop (win7) - fully up-to-date
  • RDP client file version 6.3.9600.16415

How can i troubleshoot this any further?

2019 RDSH - not able reconnect to Disconnected session, every time new session (with fSingleSessionPerUser=0)

Hello colleagues

When we are doing such config (enable multiple sessions per user):

Computer Configuration\ Administrative Templates\ Windows Components\ Remote Desktop Services\ Remote Desktop Session Host\ Connections

Restrict Remote Desktop Services users to a single Remote Desktop Services session     Disabled

We are not able to reconnect to any disconnected session that was running previously.

It seems that it was mentioned here for Inside build, but we have same...

https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Windows-Server-Insiders/Bug-no-reconnect-to-disconnected-session-with/m-p/282056/highlight/false#M829

Any solutions for this problem?

Easiest way to enable more than 2 concurrent RDP sessions on Windows Server 2016

$

Hello everyone,

I am trying to figure out the easiest way to allow more than 2 RDP sessions at a time on my Windows 2016 Server Standard. I have tried using the google to help, but there are so many suggestions and 90% of them result in the original poster disappearing so I don't know the best way to accomplish this. I don't need anything extravagant setup, I just need more than 2 people to be able to rdp into the server at the same time.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dual 4k monitors RDS, is it supported or not?

When connecting to a RDS server (Windows 2016) with dual 4k monitors, the connection only uses one 4k monitor.

When the first monitor is set to 4k and second monitor is set to 2k it is possible to have a dual screen RDS session.

When using /span while both monitors are to 4k it also works.

Is is supported to have a dual screen 4k RDS session?

Is TLS 1.2 or TLS 1.3 supported by Windows Server 2016 RDS with non-HA connection broker

$

Hi everyone,

Recent penetration test on RDS environment revealed our Remote Desktop Gateway servers (based on Windows Server 2016) use either TLS 1.0 or TLS 1.1. Due to compliance it need to be disabled and TLS 1.2 or TLS 1.3 should be forced to be used instead. I know that in the past disabling TLS 1.0 in the environment with non-HA Remote Desktop Connection Broker server stopped communication between Remote Desktop Connection Broker and Remote Desktop Session Host.

Are TLS 1.2 or TLS 1.3 supported nowadays? (I have a dedicated Remote Desktop Gateway and Remote Desktop Licensing server but Remote Desktop Connection Broker and Remote Desktop Session Host roles are installed on the same server).

Thank you.

License server

Hi,

we usually install only one license server.

If the license server fails, does the RDS solution stop working?

Could I install the function in another one and activate the same licenses activated in the first one that was installed configured and leaves standby?

My question is: what risk of losing the license server? What impacts on a scenario that is already working.

Thank you.

Auto Start choice of programs

Hello,

I know how to start a program in Windows Server 2008 and 2012 r2 STD RDP.

Now the client has 2 programs to run. How do I make a way that when the RDP user logs in they only see a choice to open those 2 programs.
I tried running a bat script to open a folder with the 2 program shortcuts, but it didn't work. I can see the script running during log on, but then it auto logs off intermediately.

Windows 2019 Server set up for remote using CAL but giving 60 minute session error message

Hello.  I just migrated from Windows 2019 eval to standard and purchased an open license.  I did edit the group policy to reflect that I do have a 3 user CAL.

I am getting a 60 minute session warning.  Why is this warning coming up?  Is this a configuration issue?

User can`t change password if it need to be changed on next logon (get back to desktop)

Hello.

I tested two scenarios:

When user must change password on next logon and his RDP connection session is disconnected or session is not exist.
User will be asked to change password. User can put old and new password to the form. And after press "next" button, he will get back to his desktop and connection to the server will not be established.

If user is connected to RDP server (with active session) and want to change password, there is no problem if he will press Ctrl+Alt+End and force password changing.

In the security logs on the domain controller, I see only errors related to the need to change the password. AND not see any errors.

Windows server 2008.

Thank you.
