RD Gateway Multiple sessions for same user

$

Hi Guys,

I am not sure if something is wrong with our RD Gateway (new installation) but every user that logs on through RD Gateway (on Monitoring sections) there are 2 sessions for the same user. Does anyone know what is wrong? I think that has nothing to do with restrict the multiple session option because it is enabled by default and users have only 1 session on session host server. It is just monitoring section on RDGW that shows 2 sessions? How to fix it??

2012 R2 RDS Temporary Profile issue

I have set up a standard 3 node 2012 R2 RDS for testing. All virtualized on VMware ESXi 5.0. I have a connection Broker, session host, and web access server. I have published several applications and I can access them without a problem. Here is my issue:

When I try to log on to my session host server either locally or thru RDP, I am always logged in with a Temporary profile. It does not mater what user account I use. Even logging on locally as the administrator I get a temporary profile.

All windows updates are installed and current.

I have removed the server from the domain, deleted the account, and rejoined it to the domain.

I have deleted all .bak registry entries from here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

There is a hotfix here for a similar issue on 2012 but it does not apply to 2012 R2

The only event viewer errors are:

1515 (Windows has backed up this user profile. Windows will automatically try to use the backup profile the next time this user logs on.)

1511 (Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.)

Any suggestions to resolve would be greatly appreciated.

RDC Application does not connect automatically with saved credentials

Hello!

I have a problem with a Windows Server 2016 Standard installation. I installed the Remote Desktop Services and Active Directory Domain Services, I promoted the server to a domain and registered users. *I changed the server name and IP (after doing this). I restarted the server and i continue installing apps etc.

At the time of configuring my Remote Desktop Connection Application from another networked machine (to automatically login with the credentials that I registered), and we click on connect, it enters to the server but it does not show me the desktop, but it shows me the login page with the profile "Other" and I have to enter the username and password again. So it force me to type again user and password.

The way im trying to login is DomainName\User since i promoted the server to a domain.

I got the following errors in Server Manager:

ID 4013 Warning Microsoft Windows DNS Server service:

"The DNS server is waiting for Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) to signal that the initial synchronization of the directory has been completed. The DNS server service cannot start until the initial synchronization is complete because critical DNS data might not yet be replicated onto this domain controller. If events in the AD DS event log indicate that there is a problem with DNS name resolution, consider adding the IP address of another DNS server for this domain to the DNS server list in the Internet Protocol properties of this computer. This event will be logged every two minutes until AD DS has signaled that the initial synchronization has successfully completed."

Also,

ID 7050 Error Microsoft-Windows-DNS-Server-Service DNS Service

The DNS server recv() function failed. The event data contains the error.

I hope someone could help me on this. Thanks!

Hey guys,

We just bought a couple of servers from Lenovo and added a 5-User CAL to each, the CALs came with a Tracking Number in them, but when I went to add the licenses to Windows I can't find a type that has a Tracking number, so how can I add these licenses to our new servers?

Thanks

rd web access vs rds gateway

i want to understand the flow to reach rdsh. if we use rds web access, then i see my resource which is defined in collection

so i understand web access server after authenticating connects to connection broker. But does it also connects to RDS gateway, or its either one of them. if have to choose then which one is more secure. We switched from rd gateway to web access only because in that server auth certificate is needed

Please help to decide which is better option

%UserProfile%\Windows

Hi,

Can someone explain to me when this folder is used? I've been trying to use it to redirect files for some apps to%UserProfile%\Windows\* instead ofC:\Windows\*, but it's not working, I even made a test app to check for files existence within it, and it too is not redirected.

Adding the apps to TS Compatibility regkeys did not work either
HLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\Compatibility\Applications
HLM\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\Compatibility\Applications

How do I confirm that this is working? and is there a way to force it?

Thanks.

Can 2019 RDS Device CALs be swapped, or activated as User CALs?

I've bought some 2019 RDS Device CAL's and haven't yet activated them.  Before I do, am I able to have them changed to 2019 RDS User CAL's, or simply activate them as User CAL's when I come to add them to the RD Licensing Server?

RDS Device Cals or Users Cals

Hi

i search the microsoft docs and the internet to find answers to the confusing licensing system microsoft provides to Remote desktop of servers and couldn't find a definitive answer. its so confusing.

i hope anyone could guide me to understand what i need to purchase in my case. my scenario:

i have a windows server 2016 in aws cloud.

i have 14 local users who uses this server (employees). all of the are admins.

2 of the users only can access the server concurrently using the remote desktop app. if a 3rd one wants to connect, one of the users using rdp should quit.

what i want is to increase the amount of concurrent users to 5 for example instead of 2. what should i do or buy?

keep in mind those are local users on server and we don't have any active directory.

can anyone clear this for me please?

Hello , i have successfully configured my remote desktop services on a vps server, i want to share my premium pricey account of a website with other clients through rds, i have configured rds licensing per device . my problem is that my clients will buy only one account of rds from me then share the credentials with each other. so if anyone can help me how to allow remote desktop connection  to only a specify computer device so that even if another computer try to login to my server with correct credentials won't have access

Disable Remote Desktop Services before my 120 day trial expires

Hello,

I previously enabled this to test multiple simultaneous login to my server. I don't use it now so I never purchased the required license. I want to disable the feature and return to the regular 2 session login on my server.

1.) Can you please verify that the following steps will disable this feature:

Open gpedit.msc

navigate to : Computer Configuration\ Administrative Templates\ Windows Components\ Remote Desktop Services\ Remote Desktop Session Host\ Licensing

Use the specified Remote Desktop license servers     Disables

Set the Remote Desktop licensing mode     Disabled

2.) Will this now revert to the original setup where only 2 sessions are allowed?

Thank you in advance.

RDS Azure MFA - RD Gateway issue

$

Hi

I have RDS/VDI running internally on Windows Server 2016. I have configured MFA for external RDS users using Azure MFA and Azure Application Proxy with Azure Enterprise Application.

I have created two Enterprise applications: one for RD Web and one for RD Gateway. Only the application for RD Web is being used directly by RDS users. MFA works just fine for external RDS users but there is some security issues with this solution. If a user saves a .rdf file they can use this to connect (rdp) to a server without being prompted for MFA - they are still prompted for password though. Furthermore - It a user knows the url of the RD Gateway server they can connect without being prompted for MFA - but still need to supply their user name and password.

Obviously this is a security issues and I wnated to know if anyone has "simple" solution for this. I am thinking about redirecting the url (DNS pointer) of the RD Gateway to Azure, the same way that I did with the RD Web. Has anyone tried that approach?

This is basically what I am thinking of trying:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/manage-apps/application-proxy-integrate-with-remote-desktop-services

Another approach is using NPS (Network Policy Server) but this solution is not very user friendly because the end user will not be prompted to use MFA - they will need to know that they should check their phone/authenticator app.

Kind regards,

Michael Buchardt

Remote Desktop Services busy at logon - Event ID 69 User Profile Services

$

Hi,

we are getting more and more logon errors from users using a new rds environment that they are unable to log in because the RDS are busy. Even if the server only has 2 Users connected. Yesterday I also got stuck logging in via teamviewer. In the tesk manager I see several logged on users without a name that are probably stuck loggin on and I cannot log them off.

I was able to get some precise feedback from users and I think everytime they are logging in, they trigger an event 69 where it says that the ntuser.dat on the local RDS-server is newer than the one wintin the roaming profile.

Here are some details about the environment:

site1 - datacenter:

  • RDS-Servers
  • local DC
  • local fileserver

site 2 - Office:

  • local DC
  • local file server
  • clients connecting via mstsc

The sites are connected via a site 2 site vpn. The filers sync via dfs. Roaming roaming profiles are stored on the filers. In AD the default profile folders point to filer one and in the datacenter they are being changed via GPO to the local filer in the datacenter.

Some of the applications that used to live in the old terminal server farm in site 2 are being shared as remote apps since they havent been migrated yet.

I am fairly certain that the situations stem from the user profiles, but how do I resolve this?

Thanks in advance and have a good one

Fabian

Hi

I know that remote desktop only allow one session at a time, but I heard someone told me that we can remote desktop to one computer at a same time, but different account. For example:

PC1 => PC3 User1

PC2 => PC3 User2

I tried before, but Windows not allow me to do so, it will disconnect PC1 connection same as we connect to same user account.

Thank you.

RDS: Need to remove assigned license server from session host server

Hello all,

I am building out an RDS farm with the following configuration

Server 1 - Roles: Remote Desktop Connection Broker, and Remote Desktop Licensing

Server 2 -  Roles: Remote Desktop Session Host, and Remote Desktop Web Access

Server 3 - Roles:   Remote Desktop Session Host, and Remote Desktop Web Access

Here is the issue: So, Server 1 is hosting my 2019 RDS CALs. Since my session host servers (server 2 and 3) need to access those CALS I assigned server1 as server 2 (session host server) lic server via powershell commands below. BUT! I accidentally assigned server 3 a totally different server because I wasn't paying attention. *face palm* Does anyone know how to remove the assigned lic server from the session host? Screenshot is below and also attached
