After installed RDS CAL per device for Windows 2019, I get the following message

Number of license available: 0

The Remote Desktop Session Host server is in Per Device licensing mode and No Redirector Mode, but license server ig8906.com does not have any installed licenses with the following attributes:
Product version: Windows Server 2016
Licensing mode: Per Device
License type: RDS CALs or VDI Premium Suite licenses

Can someone advise if i need purchase RDS CAL 2016 license for my 2016 server? or changing configuration can fix this issue?

Thanks

Indexing of the server after joining it to a collection

I have 3 terminal hosts that is part of the collection.

I have added the windows search feature and then made sure to enable the service and turn to start automatically.  But when I go to the indexing icon in control panel  it does not show the local disk drive.

 I found this article: https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/29142044/Windows-Search-not-working-when-Remote-Desktop-Session-Host-is-installed-on-Server-2019.html

It was June from last year, basically it's and issue and there is no workaround.

Wondering if anyone else had this issue and was able to fix it.

User CAL or Device CAL on a jump.application server

Hi,
I've been asked to setup a server running Windows Server 2016 Essentials to replace a rickity old server. I need to get this right and have sort of gone around in circles on Youtube and searching the Internet.

Essentials comes with 25 user CAL and 50 device CALs. We're planning on deploying a single server that will have a local domain controller (on the server).

There are about 100 people who will log into the server for about 10 - 20mins/day (maybe even 20mins/week).

Do I need a user CAL for each user in the AD that wants to connect to the server or does the CAL simply limit the number of concurrent users (people using the server at the same time), and do I need a separate RDS CAL for each user.

This server will need to communicate with a number of other back end servers through SMB, SQL and RDS. Is this where the device license comes in? because I want multiple users on this server to communicate with another device.

Appreciate I should get this, but its very different building a real world application and something you throw together in a virtual lab.

Thanks

Using RDG with Azure NPS Extension and Remote Desktop Connection Manager Freezes

In my environment I have an on-premise Remote Desktop Gateway that is configured to use Azure for MFA.  The configuration for this follows the steps outlined in the following article: Integrate your Remote Desktop Gateway infrastructure using the Network Policy Server (NPS) extension and Azure AD

The issue I experience appears to be limited to the following scenario.

I use Remote Desktop Connection Manager that is configured to use the RDG.  I connect to a Windows server and successfully negotiate the second factor of authentication.  So far so good.  The problem is when performing a Log Off or Disconnect from a Windows server, the Remote Desktop Connection Manager consistently freezes and is unresponsive for approximately 30 seconds.

This problem does not appear to affect RDP sessions which use the Remote Desktop Client (therefore still using the RDG) although the experience isn't necessarily the same.

My environment consists of the following 2 servers:

  • Server 1 - Windows Server 2019 with both Remote Desktop Gateway with NPS Server Roles
  • Server 2 - Windows Server 2019 with NPS Server Role and the Azure NPS Extension installed

The version of Remote desktop Connection Manager is "RDCMan v2.7 build 1406.0" and I am connecting from a Windows 10 Device with Build 1803.

UPDATE 1:

On the Windows 10 (1803) device, when the RDCM becomes responsive again, the following errors are logged in the Remote Desktop Services eventlog...

Level	Date and Time	Source	Event ID	Task Category
Error	10/01/2020 16:16:18	Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-ClientActiveXCore	1033	General	Component name:CheckInternetConnectionTask, :: 'Connection-to-server is alive. Server checked: https://externaladdresshere' in CheckInternetConnectionTask::ExecuteTask at 3639 err=[0x0], Error code:0x0

UPDATE 2:

I have now reproduced the issue when  connecting from a Windows 10 Build 1909 device.

Any help appreciated.  Thanks

Change gateway port but keep 443 for RD Web Access

Hello,

I want to know if it's possible to have this infrastructure for RDS Computer-Based Deployment :

  • RD Connection Broker and RD Web Access and RD Gateway on same server
  • Using port 443 for RD Web Acces
  • Using port 444 for RD Gateway, OR (if it's possible) keep port 443 for Gateway
  • RDVH on a separated server

I'm working with Windows Server 2016 for the CB and Hyper-V Server 2019 for the RDVH.

Thank's in advance ! :)

Unable to install the Windows Server RDS Licenses

We are using Windows Server 2016 and we are nearing the end of the grace period.

Through the Microsoft Store I bought 20 1-user CALs.
I installed the RD Licensing Manager and it is active; now that I'm trying to add the licences I just bought I get an error indicating that "The License Code is not recognized. Ensure that you have entered the correct license code."

The license program I'm selecting is the "License Pack (Retail Purchase)" because the licences are in the sequence of 5 sets of 5 alphanumeric characters.
The only other information I have is the order number and that's it.

How can I install the licenses or what am I doing wrong?

Remote desktop gateway problem OS X RDP 10

Hi,

Since yesterday we have a problem with logging in on Server 2012R, with RDP 10 on Apple devices.

We get the following notification:
HTTPEndPoIntException: 4, The non-proxy http connection failed to connect with the message: 404 Not Found

I assume this has to do something with the Windows KB4534309 Security Update according the next text i found in a article:

A remote code execution vulnerability exists in Windows Remote Desktop Gateway (RD Gateway) when an unauthenticated attacker connects to the target system using RDP and sends specially crafted requests. This vulnerability is pre-authentication and requires no user interaction. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could execute arbitrary code on the target system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.

Can anyone help out?

Thanks in Advance,

Kind Regards,

Raymond

RDP ClientActiveX has been disconnected (Reason= 4)

Several times a day users of RDS - whether session host or just a RDP session to a server - are getting an issue where the connection freezes for a few seconds and then disconnects. Reconnecting can be done and the session is still active. The event logged in Remote Desktop Services1 is "RDP ClientActiveX has been disconnected (Reason= 4)". This disconnecting seems to be random as to timing or usage so I am baffled. The servers that I know are affected are 2012r2 and 2016 sitting on a VMware / ESXi hypervisor.

Does anyone have any idea why this might be occurring and a possible fix?

How could I get the remote desktop and applcations(video & text) with the highest quality consistently?

My Server is Win 10 1909(10.0.18363.592) and my client is the same version.
When I use mstsc.exe to connect to the server and run a video player remotely, I found the video quality changed dynamically,
sometimes high quality, somethimes very low.
Sever and client are in a local network and the bandwith is 1G bps and very stable.
My question is, how could I get the remote desktop and applcations(video & text) with the highest quality consistently?
I need the quality keep stable and do not change dynamically.
I have tried two Group Policy settings, the first is“Configure image quality for RemoteFX Adaptive Graphics", the second is
"Configure RemoteFX Adaptive Graphics", tested all options, but it doesn't work.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

RDS browse function behavior for different users

Hi,

Need your help to understand browse button functionality under RDS environment for different users.

I have customer who has same RDS profile setup for all users, but when ever browse function used from a particular application to attach documents :

- For some users, it keeps in memory last location used and open that location with last few attachments done.

- For some user it shows blank list and user have to re-direct to original location to make attachment.

On user profile below configuration done :

- Default save location of documents in application.

- Task Bar -> Properties > this will open Taskbar and Navigation properties window -> Jump Lists tab -> check/ uncheck "Store and display recently opened items in Jump Lists".

Please share your valuable thoughts on above.

Warm regards

Problem with RDP

Hi,

Lately I'm having problems with an RDP server, from time to time I have errors like:
Service Control Manager ID 7011 The timeout (180000 ms) for the transaction response of the NcbService was exceeded.
Service Control Manager ID 7011 The timeout (180000 ms) for the transaction response of the UmRdpService service has expired.
And finally comes an error like this:
Service Control Manager ID 7046 The following service has been stopped repeatedly in response to service control requests: Port Redirector in Remote Desktop Services user mode.

I have to restart the server to be able to log in again.
The server is monitored with Zabbix and has no RAM or CPU problems.
I don't see other errors in event viewer.

I have already tried solutions like: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/it-pro/windows-server-2008-R2-and-2008/cc756319(v=ws.10)?redirectedfrom=MSDN

Increasing the timeout doesn't solve the problem. Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

RD Virtualization Host Configuration Failed : At least one of the required services is not running on the server

$

I have two nodes that I am trying to set up a virtual machine-based deployment with.

Node1 has RDCB, RDGW, RDWA, RDVH all installed properly, and seem to work as expected.

Node2 has only RDVH installed, and it is not working correctly.

From Node2, in Server Manager under Remote Desktop Services, I get the error:

The server pool does not match the RD Connection Brokers that are in it. Errors:
1. Cannot connect to any of the specified RD Connection Broker servers. Ensure at least one server is available and that the Remote Desktop Management (rdms), RD Connection Broker (tssdis), or RemoteApp and Desktop Connection (tscpubrpc) services are running.

Node1 (which hosts the RDCB) is online, and all of the three services above are running on it.

I can ping Node1 from Node2 and vice versa.

Node2 is apart of the server pool on Node1 and vice versa. I even removed them and re-added them.

I followed threads suggesting to open the RDCms database in SQL Management Studio, bring it offline and then back online, but this makes no difference (probably because RDCms was not in a recovery or pending state in the first place for me).

Uninstalling RDVH and re-installing RDVH directly onto Node2 makes no difference.

Uninstalling RDVH and re-installing RDVH through "Add RD Virtualization Host Servers" under Deployment Overview on Node1 fails with this error in Event Viewer under Microsoft-Windows-Rdms-UI/Admin :

Event ID 4119

RD Virtualization Host Configuration Failed on <server-name> With Error: At least one of the required services is not running on the server <server-name>.

Searching this event ID pretty much only brings up results about firewall blockages. I have no firewall set up, and so this is not the issue. I found absolutely no results online about not having a required service.

On Node2, I have the following services installed and running:

- Remote Desktop Configuration

- Remote Desktop Services

- Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector

- Remote Desktop Virtualization Host Agent

What service am I missing? Is it Remote Desktop Management (rdms)? How do I go about installing it? And why was it not already installed?

Both these servers have just gone though fresh OS installations, are fully updated, and have identical OS specs.

I have removed/installed/rebooted both servers countless times to try to get a proper RDVH installation on Node2.

It makes no sense as to why this wouldn't be working out of the box.

Azure Application Proxy Pre-authentication with RDS 2019 not working

Tried to publish RD GW and Web through a Azure Application Proxy using this Microsoft article: https://docs.microsoft.com/bs-latn-ba/azure/active-directory/manage-apps/application-proxy-integrate-with-remote-desktop-services

Pass-through authentication is working, however with Pre-authentication it can't connect. After a while it shows the error message below:

I've tried several things but i'm unable to get it working. It should be possible to use pre-authentication according to the documentation (single app for RD Gateway and RD Web Acces):
Both the RD Web and RD Gateway endpoints must be located on the same machine, and with a common root. RD Web and RD Gatewayare published as a single application with Application Proxy so that you can have a single sign-on experience between the two applications.

Unable to install Fonts

$

Recently we've had a vendor update one of their applications. With this application there are 10 fonts that need to be installed (are not being installed when the application is installed). The result of this is incorrect forms being created or documents with nasty symbols all over the place.

I'm posting this here in the RDS forums since these are the servers where I first noticed the issue. Attempting to open\install them on other 2016 servers has been hit or miss.

Occasionally when I first log into one of the Session Hosts I am able to open the first font. Subsequent attempts to open the font result in an "invalid font" error. I get the error that the format or font is invalid when I try to open it, right-click and install it, or drop it into the Fonts folder directly.

I know the fonts are fine since I can open them on a Windows 10 machine, and most Server 2016 machines. In the few cases where I can't open it on the other servers I'm still able to install them.

I expect this to be a pretty niche issue, but I would love some feedback or ideas on troubleshooting. There is nothing in the event logs nor do I have any idea about how to track a failed font installation. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

RDS 2019. 120 licenses available, users being disconnected every 60 minutes.

$

Hi,

We have a Windows 2019 RDS farm with 2 session hosts. Our license server has 120 CALs available. A GPO directs the session hosts to the license server.

After a month of deploying it, our users started receiving the error:

“There is a problem with your remote desktop license and your session will be disconnected in 60 minutes. Contact your Administrator to fix this problem.”

Running RD Licensing Diagnoser on the session host showed that 50+ "Per User" licenses were available. Unable to find a solution I ended up rebuilding the whole farm from scratch. Today (a month later) the problem returned.

Deja vu, running RD Licensing Diagnoser on the faulty session hosts tells me that the license server is up, 55 out of our 120 licenses are available, and that the licensing mode is “Per User”.

The problem first affects one of the session hosts, then later the other. I see no errors or warnings in Event Viewer concerning the licensing services on either the session host or licensing server.

We have another RDS farm still running 2016 on this domain, and it has not displayed any of these problems.

Any help would be appreciated. I’d rather not rebuild this farm with 2016 (which is the only path I see to fixing this).

RemoteApp issues with mstsc.exe on Windows 10 1903, 1809, 1803, 1709

$

Our RDS environment is running in Azure on Server 2016 managed by our MSP.

We are having client-side issues with RemoteApps where one or more windows in our RemoteApp session will cease to refresh the window contents or to accept keyboard input.  The endpoint's keyboard works fine.

The applications are running just fine on the RDS as you can see if you shadow the user's session.  However, the user does not see their applications doing anything, so to them their applications have hung.  The user CAN open taskmgr.exe by using ctrl-alt-end sometimes to kill individual apps then relaunch them, but sometimes one or more windows does the same thing again.

A WORKAROUND is to roll back to Windows 10 1703's mstsc.exe and mstscax.dll, but that's not a solution... JUST A WORKAROUND.  As we know, old versions don't get patched for security updates & other bug fixes.

We need the attention of Microsoft engineers responsible for mstsc.exe and mstscax.dll to fix it to remove the issues introduced since 1703's release.

Please help!

Windows 10 1903 remote-app repeating keystrokes

Hi,

All our win 10 1903 clients, immediately after been updated from 1803 to 1903 start repeating keystrokes in remote apps. Servers are 2012 R2. RemoteFX cannot be disabled on session hosts servers since that solution causes problems to some of the apps running. Any one facing the same problem ? Any solution?
