Configuring remote desktop external connector Windows server 2019
There is a document describing the activation under server 2008: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/887432/how-to-install-and-to-configure-the-external-connector-for-a-terminal
The same settings under 2019 gives in de RDS session a popup with the text: There is a problem with your Remote Desktop license, and your session will be disconnected in 60 minutes.
Windows Server 2012 R2 - Remote Desktop Services warning
I logged on today on a RDS server to perform some windows updates and i saw a warning that it says "Remote Desktop licensing mode is not configured.
Remote Desktop Services will stop working in 33 days. On the RD Connection Broker server, use Server Manager to specify the Remote Desktop licensing mode and the license server.
Our production/RDS infrastructure consists of 4 vm's
Name Roles
RDS1 -- RDS-RD-SERVER, RDS-GATEWAY
RDS2 -- RDS-RD-SERVER, RDS-CONNECTION-BROKER, RDS-WEB-ACCESS, RDS-LICENSING
RDS3 -- RDS-RD-SERVER
RDS4 -- RDS-RD-SERVER
On the disaster site we have again RDS on 4 vm's and the roles are like this:
RDS1 -- RDS-GATEWAY
RDS2 -- RDS-CONNECTION-BROKER, RDS-WEB-ACCESS, RDS-LICENSING
RDS3 -- RDS-RD-SERVER
RDS4 -- RDS-RD-SERVER
The message does not appear on the disaster site. Only on the production. I believe that someone tried to do something on the production site and messed up the roles. Could someone help me out with this issue?
Thank you in advance!
Barebones RDS Install
I have a Windows Server 2008R2 server running the Remote Desktop Services role, and the only role services i have installed are "Remote Desktop Session Host" and "Remote Desktop Licensing". With this i can provide a Windows desktop experience to a set of remote users who need to run an old legacy application. The remote user uses Remote Desktop Connection to remote to this server, and they log in with a local user account on that server. They have one icon on their desktop that points to the legacy program they run. They launch the program, use it, close it, and log off the remote desktop session. It's very simple and barebones. I dont need anything more than that.
I have to replace this server because 2008R2 is at end of life later this year. I tried creating the exact same environment on a Windows Server 2019 server, installing just those two role services but it failed. Doing research i discovered that Remote Desktop Services has really changed since 2008R2. I tried doing the full install, but i couldnt get local accounts to work with it. And there was way too much extra stuff that i dont need (I dont need a web gateway, etc.). Is it still possible to create a barebones, old-school terminal server on current Windows Server OS? I just want a simple remote desktop session with one program shortcut. Nothing else. Can this be done anymore? IF so, can you point me in the right direction? And is this supported by Microsoft?

Terminal Server Licensing Service on windows server 2016 won't stay running
Hi to all,
In my environment I have a Windows server 2016 that acts as license manager for some other windows 2016 server and some windows 2019 servers.
The problem is that the Terminal Server Licensing Service keeps failing: sometimes it takes a few days for the services, sometimes it happens after an hour.
When that happens, whenever a user tries to login to one of the TS served by the license manager, he receives messages that says " Remote desktop license Issue: There is a problem with your Remote Desktop license, and you session will be disconnected in 60 minutes. Contact your administrator to fix this problem".
That's the error I see in the event viewer:

How to uncheck Smart Cards checkbox in Remote Desktop Connection
I am looking to uncheck the Smart Cards box in Remote Desktop Connections Local Resources > Devices and resources > More... area.
I attempted this by disabling this in GPO under Windows Components/Remote Desktop Services/Remote Desktop Session Host/Device and Resource Redirection/Do not allow smart card device redirection however this seems to be a separate setting.
I need this fix to be able to be used in a enterprise environment, not a one off computer.
lock down RDS 2016 for standard users
hello we are providing full session desktop (rds 2016)
i notice that any domain user can open "server manager" and "administrator tools"
this seems to be security risk. How can I disable these two items but still allow it for the domain admins?
Server 2019 RDS server randomly crashing
Below is the crash dump and analysis. I only found one thing online that seemed to involve the same probable cause. I believe the solution from what I did find online was to delete the fntcache.dat file and any fontcache folders in the users appdata/local. Hoping someone can help confirm this or point me in the right direction. This is a brand new RDS server. Thanks.

Windows Servr 2016 RDSH - Firewall rules created at every login.
Hi,
I have a setup with the following servers running Windows Server 2016
1x RDGW, RDCB, RDWA, RDLicensing.
5x RDSH
Im using UPD on the collection.
I have noticed very long login times, after policys etc are shown on screen it sits at a black screen for between 20sec and sometimes up to 5min.
I have also noticed that the svchost.exe that controls the Windows Firewall is using 25% to 50% when a user logs in and using around 1200Mb memory.
After I found this I checked the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security and found thousands of Cortana, Work or school account, Your account, Contact Support rules.
I found a script in this thread that could delete the rules https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/9aad7675-d1ba-4900-9d85-0cd117f5514f/new-firewall-rules-created-for-each-user?forum=win10itprosetup
This made the CPU usage and memory usage go down to normal levels, but after every login a user does it builds up the list of rules again. With many users logging in to the system the rules build up very fast and the login times gets high and every server gets slow.
Example on our RDSH01 server that have been running in production since 2017-04-13 the script found and deleted 66153 rules that it found with "$Rules = Get-NetFirewallRule -All | Where-Object {$profiles.sid -notcontains $_.owner -and $_.owner }"
The script also tryed to get rules with this command "$rules2 = Get-NetFirewallRule -All -PolicyStore ConfigurableServiceStore | Where-Object { $profiles.sid -notcontains $_.owner -and $_.owner }" but fails with an "not enough space error"
The script removes the rules from here with the content of $rules "HKLM:\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\FirewallRules"
and $rules2 was meant to clean up at "HKLM:\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\RestrictedServices\Configurable\System"
but doesnt do anything because of the error on the Get-command. If I try to access it with regedit it stops to respond, guessing there are too many items in that container for it to handle.
Anyone know a solution for this problem?
Regards Fredrik
Force shutdown application when RDS session is terminated using "X" button on RDS window
If an RDS session terminates suddenly due to user or computer error, are the published applications closed automatically and properly?
If not, can I effect this using GPO?

Audiosrv server 2016 crashes applications like explorer.exe, Google Chrome etc.
Good morning.
We've been experiencing random problems on our RDSH vmware environment. At random times, the audiosrv seems to trouble other applications and makes them not respond anymore, restarting the audio service temporarily fixes the problem. I have made a gpo to restart the audiosrv, but of course this is not a solution.

Session Host Load Balancing not working
Hello,
We have configured a Remote Services setup on Windows Server 2016.
On Server01 we have installed Remote Desktop Gateway Server, Remote Desktop Connection Broker.
We have created 10 Session Host Servers. Out of these we have created 2 session collections - each having 2 servers. These are:
SU1 - ServerA + Server B
SU2 - ServerC + ServerD
We want simple load balancing between 2 servers within each unit (SU1 and SU2) so that half of the users will get connected to Server A and half to Server B.
This same configuration was working fine in Windows 2012. But is not working now. Are there any changes from 2012 to 2016 - which we are missing upon?
Thanks,
Rahul Jain
How do Icombine installed RDS cals into one list?
My organization has purchased and installed device cals over time as they were needed, for Win Server 2012. Now there are multiple lists in the RD licensing manager with 10, 10, 5, and 10 licenses. It is hard to manage if we are looking for a particular device. How can we combine these into one list?

RDS and TLS 1.0
Hello,
Currently we are trying to implement RDS for one of our servers.
We have Windows Server 2016 Datacenter installed.
Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work with TLS 1.2 and it needs TLS 1.0.
The error we get is Event 36871, Schannel
A fatal error occurred while creating a TLS client credential. The internal error state is 10013.
Is there any way of forcing the RD Connection Broker to use TLS 1.2?
Thank you
Problem with Windows Server 2019 RDS License
Windows Server 2019, Russian version, clean installation, licensed, activated, in the workgroup.
Installed the role of Remote Desktop Services, Remote Desktop Licensing Service and Remote Desktop Session Host.
RDS license server is activated, a license for 5 users is installed.
In group policies, the license server is specified and the "per user" mode is selected. The licensing diagnostic tool does not find any problems, but it shows that the session host server and the licensing server are version 2016.
With a terminal connection to the server, the following message is displayed:
"There is a problem with your Remote Desktop license, and your session will be disconnected in 60 minutes, Contact your system administrator to to fix this problem"
There are no error records in the logs, the license manager shows that no licenses have been issued and 5 licenses are available.
Which way to dig? Where to look for the cause of the error?
RemoteAPP after windows 10 update 1803 are slow and right mouse button is not responding (it reacts only sometimes)
Hi,
our workstations with Windows 10 pro are in this weekend updated to version 1803. For main system we use RemoteAPP aplications on Windows server 2012R2 (Windows server 2012R2 is full updated). After update on client station are RemoteAPP slower, and right mouse button is unresponsive, or react verly long time...
It is a big problem for us.
PS: after replace mstsc.exe and mstscax.dll from older version Windows 10 is all OK. but this is not a solution.
Thanks.
