On-Screen Keyboard

$

Hi,

We are running several RDS 2012R2 servers and some users need to use the on-screen keyboard.
I've created a tile linked to OSK.exe and they can also use the search field on the right-hand side to type and search for OSK.

On all servers users will get the error: On-screen Keyboard does not work any more / Cannot start on-screen keyboard

When an administrator starts the osk it works fine.

How can we make sure users can use the OSK?

Redirected Printers Cannot Print (Access Denied)

Hi,

We are having an issue with redirected printers. Our RDS host is running Windows Server 2012 x64, our clients; Windows 10 x64 & Windows 7 x64.

For testing purposes we have shared WordPad through RDS, which is working fine. Our client printers (Brother MFC-9120CN and a DYMO LabelWriter 450 Turbo) are correctly showing on the host (Devices and Printers) and clients (Print Dialog) with the "(redirected X)" suffix, where X is a number.

The Brother is a network printer. The DYMO is connected via USB on a client.

When we try and print to any of the redirected printers nothing happens on the client, there are no messages or event logs. On the host there is the following Error in the PrintService event log:

"The document Print Document, owned by rdstest, failed to print on printer Brother MFC-9120CN Printer (redirected 2). Try to print the document again, or restart the print spooler.
Data type: RAW. Size of the spool file in bytes: 97316. Number of bytes printed: 76398. Total number of pages in the document: 1. Number of pages printed: 0. Client computer: \\SERVER Win32 error code returned by the print processor: 5. Access is denied."

We receive the same error with the DYMO printer which is more important to us. Additionally we get the same error using an admin account, with both printers.

We do not receive this issue using Microsoft XPS Document Writer (redirected X).

Things we have tried without success:

  • Logging into RDS using an admin account
  • Installing identical printer drivers on host and clients for each printer
  • Restarting the spooler service on the host and clients
  • Checking the System32/Spool/PRINTERS folder on host and clients - no files to delete
  • Adding 'Everyone' (including write and modify access) to the System32/Spool folder (including sub-folders)
  • Adding the RDS user (including write and modify access) to the System32/Spool folder (including sub-folders)
  • Using the "CD\Windows\System32\Spool Cacls.exe PRINTERS /e /g users:C" command via command line (run as admin)
  • Disabling "Use Remote Desktop Easy Print printer driver first" in the Group Policy Management Editor
  • Disabling various other settings in the "Printer Redirection" section of the GPME
  • Restarting the server
  • Restarting the clients

We still receive the access denied error.

Furthermore, on the host, if we go to devices and printers and select a redirected printer and print a test page, the same error appears in the event log.

We've exhausted all of the solutions we could find. Could someone please offer us any other solutions?

2016 RDS Licensing stopped working

I have a 2016 Domain controller with 50 RDP User CAL's.  The server has been working perfectly for well over a year.  Today when I tried to log in I got:

The remote session was disconnected because there are no Remote Desktop License Servers available to provide a license.  Please contact the server administrator.

When I run diags on the license server it says everything is fine.  I deleted that Trial mode grace period stuff months and months ago so that's not it.  Nothing I see shows anything wrong or out of the ordinary.

I'm stumped.  Please help!

Windows 2012 RDS user profile disk is not being created in the location being specified.

Hello,

We have a Windows 2012 RDS environment which has user profile disks setup on a file server hidden share and roams user profile data in there - please see the attached.

For some reason, when I login as a user who belongs to the user group which is supposed to have access in the collection session, I am not seeing the profile disk is being created in that hidden share being specified in that location.  Instead, the user profile is created in c:\users on the RDS host.

The hidden share also shows other many profile disks are successfully created.

Please advise where I should start troubleshoot.

RDS 2016 Gateway licensing

We are planning to use RDS Gateway to control access to different remote support IT teams (around 20 persons) to the Windows infrastructure (some teams have RDP access to some servers, others to another type).

Since this is not a RDS rollout, here's the questions regarding licensing:

  • Do we have to license this. If so, what would be the correct approach Device or User CAL or other?
  • Do we need to deploy more RDS components to be licensing compliant
  • We actually have for internal user a 3 RDS server farm with 500 CAL's (around 50 are not in user). Can this licenses be counted for this gateway?
  • How do we control the licensing usage, since there is no need to deploy RDS Hosts for these gateways?

Our Azure accounts that are connected with Office365 accounts are being hacked into and spam are being sent out from different countries. I've reset password multiple time for multiple users.
Anyone knows how to fix that ? I have changed the passwords before but it keeps happening.

Related to bug in Windows 10 build 1803 disabled Use Advanced RemoteFX graphics

We opened a case with MS on the issue with Windows 10 build 1803 that caused our RDS2012R2 RemoteApps to become unresponsive.

MS had us disable Use Advanced RemoteFX Graphics setting on our RDS Hosts. This fixed the first issue, but introduced a new issue. Now if the RemoteApps are minimized, they turn black when trying to restoring them back to the screen.

Anyone have a fix for this yet? We are waiting for MS to get back to us, but if we don't have this by tomorrow it is going to be a long day.

Hi,

our workstations with Windows 10 pro are in this weekend updated to version 1803. For main system we use RemoteAPP aplications on Windows server 2012R2 (Windows server 2012R2 is full updated). After update on client station are RemoteAPP slower, and  right mouse button is unresponsive, or react verly long time...

It is a big problem for us.

PS: after replace mstsc.exe and mstscax.dll from older version Windows 10 is all OK. but this is not a solution.

Thanks.

Ensuring only known devices can connect to RDS

Hi,

I have an RDS environment built out on Azure VMs.  There is a business requirement to add a greater layer of security it the RDS service by only allowing known devices (only corporate owned) to connect to it.  Is there anything within RDS that would provide this type of functionality or is there some additional software layering that can be added.

Thoughts?

Thanks

RDS 2016 Deployment - Certificate & Port queries

$

We have deployed RDS 2016 and I have a few questions with regards to

1. Certificates

We have 7 users accessing the published apps using RDWeb using the client VPN and we have setup only internal access.

FQDN of RDS Server: RDSSVR01.ka.domain.com (which is our internal domain)

Kindly advise if we go with SSL or Wildcard certificate and what names must be included in the certificate

Server01 - AD & RDS Licensing
Server02 - RDS Session Host
RDSSVR01 - RDS Gateway + Broker + Web Service

2. How secure is port 3389 and is it advisable to open this port for public/internet access to RDWeb. Our hosting partner claim "Please note that opening port 3389 poses a security risk and RDP access via SSL VPN." Any advise

3. In case we open port 3389 for internet access to RDWeb

Internally the URL: RDSSVR01.ka.domain.com/rdweb

Externally the URL: rdsess.domain.ka/rdweb

Please advise if the above works, what entries must i have on my SSL or WC certificates

Have RemoteApp stops sometimes in Windows Build 1803 been solved?

Hi experts,

I know this is an very old issue and some people say Microsoft has fixed this problem in the latest Cumulative Update. However, I had fixed this issue use mstsc.exe version 10.0.16299.15 before. One user complain she has the same issue recently and I use the same method(downgrade mstsc) to fix(By the way, she has installed the latest windows update already so the KB4284848 can not be applied or has been already applied).

Please see the screenshot. She has to maximize the SAP Logon Windows running via RemoteApp to make the text reveal.

RDS user connection issues

$

Hi,

We have a simple setup here but we have a problem with users have intermittent connection issues. The event log isn't the most helpful so I was wandering if anyone here can point me in the right direction. In lamens terms this is my issue.

We have a Kemp load balancer to two RDS gateways and then our RDS connection broker then our RDS hosts. All are Windows Server 2016.

Daily we get issues from remote working users that when they first connect they get the configuring connecting dialog box (after all the authentication) and it just stays there and either times out or the user just cancels. When they click on the RDP icon and attempt to connect a second time, it works fine and logs straight in.

I understand there are many factors (user internet connection etc) but we (IT) have ourselves, in the evening gone home and tested it and get the same issue. spinning circle on configuring, cancel it or wait until it times out, try again and straight in.

Is there anywhere you can tell me where I can look like a RDS log where I can see exactly what it is doing so I can get to the bottom of this issue?

On a side note I can see in the "TerminalServices-Gateway" log on one of the gateway servers, I keep seeing this warning and error (same time) against a mixture of users, daily;

Warning: The user "domain\user1", on client computer "IP address", met connection authorization policy and resource authorization policy requirements, but could not connect to resource "RDS Host 4". Connection protocol used: "UDP". The following error occurred: "23005".

Error: The user "domain\user1", on client computer "User IP address", failed connection to the remote server "RDS Host 4" using UDP proxy. The following error occurred : "2147965405".

Now, I dont know if this is related to what everyone is experiencing but it doesnt show this error and warning for everyone who has the two attempt connecting issue. I just put that in to see if it helps.

I just want to know if there is anywhere I can see exactly what is happening when connecting (RDS logs etc).

Any help is much appreciated.

Regards

A Server certificate is not yet installed Error

I configured RDS and seems to be working fine.

I'm getting an error that the server is not yet fully configured as a RD Gateway server then under Configuration status it says

" A server certificate is not yet installed or selected"

do I need to install a certificate?

can I get away without installing one?

will RDS malfunction if there's no certificate installed?

Thanks in Advance

Working on setting communication between RDS Host server (Domain A) and RDS License server (Domain B)

We have our RDS License server on our 2008 R2 AD domain running Server 2016 DC.  We are setting up our first request for an RDS Host server that runs on another 2008 R2 AD domain.  The server is running 2012 R2 DC.

There is a 2-way Forest Transitive trust between the 2 domains.

There is a hardware firewall between the two <g class="gr_ gr_435 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" data-gr-id="435" id="435">vLANs</g>.  I recently had our network team open TCP port 135 <g class="gr_ gr_521 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" data-gr-id="521" id="521">inbound</g> from the host server to the RDS License server. The RDS Host server cannot currently communicate with the RDS License server per RD Licensing Diagnoser.  Network communication errors.

My question is, do we need additional ports opened on our firewall to allow appropriate traffic to occur?  Do we need all of these below?

Allow Users to Add and Print to Network Printers in 2008 R2 RD Session

$

We have a new farm for TS 2008 R2 and have run into a problem related to printing.

In our environment users are accustomed to going to Start - Run and entering \\SERVER\PRINTER to load a printer from the 500 printers we have spread across 65 print servers. However when they try that on our TS farm they get an error when the driver loads because they are not an administrator.

Our users are not using a specific hardware or software platform and do not have the printers loaded directly on their hardware because they are coming in from the internet, or not even using a Windows device so just redirecting the local printers in to the RD session isn't the answer; although it does work in cases where they do have a printer loaded locally.

I know there are new printing features that allow you to give users the permission to print to network printers without loading the drivers but I haven't found any clear documentation on how to set it up. I don't have a problem putting a list of approved print servers in, but don't know how. Even allowing them to load drivers from a pre-approved list of servers is fine by me, but again I can't seem to find how to do it.

Does anyone have any good documentation on how to set this up in GPO so that I can let users print to any network printer while in a session? Really hoping I don't have to load 150 or so different print drivers on the terminal server.
