Where is the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool in Server 2012 ?

Where is the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool in Server 2012 ?

This is an MMC snap-in found on earlier servers, even if RDS is not installed.  In Server 2012, even if the Remote Desktop Session Host role is installed, this tool is still not available.

I'm looking for the Server 2012 tool to adjust security settings like TLS authentication, High encryption level, choice of TLS certificate, NLA, etc.

Thanks!

2012 RDS - Have to keep adding server to pool every time I log in to be able to manage RDS

Hello

I have an RDS session based deployment with 2 Broker servers configured as HA. They are RD session hosts and web access servers as well. In addition, I have two more server that are purely session hosts. Ever since I added the second server to the deployment, when I go to Remote Desktop services (in server manager) I have been getting the message that the other server (name is listed correctly) is not part of the pool and needs to be added. Once I add it through Manage>Add server I can see RDS management. Is this supposed to work like this? It is cumbersome to have to add server every time. Now that I have 4 servers in the deployment I have to add multiple servers to the pool every time I start a new rdp session.

Exchange 2013 authentication issues for users of RDS server

$

We have a customer that uses thin clients and multiple RDS servers for the majority of their users. They use a software application that contains a feature which will open a new email message window from within Outlook to simplify the process of sending an email when needed in their workflow.  When the customer was running Exchange 2010, this feature worked correctly, but after upgrading to Exchange 2013, the new email message window does not open in Outlook when prompted from the other application. Instead, the user is prompted by Outlook to enter their credentials.  Whether the user cancels the prompt or enters their credentials correctly, authentication fails and they are immediately prompted for credentials again, over and over.

We have ruled out anything specific with the third-party application.  We know it works fine with other customers on Exchange 2013 (and other customers using RDS servers) and for the users at our customer site that have full PCs that are not using the RDS servers. Only the RDS users at this customer site face this issue.  We also known the same issue occurs if the RDS users click any "MAILTO" hyperlinks or shortcuts, thus eliminating the third-party application from the equation.

The customer is running 4 RDS servers (WS 2008 R2) and a separate Exchange 2013 mail server within their network.  The users have Personal Desktop VDIs running Windows 7 with Outlook 2010 in "online" mode (it is worth mentioning that the same credential prompt behavior occurs in "cached" mode as well, but the email message windowwill open after credentials are successfully entered). When running a network trace, we see that there are a number of HTTP 401 errors with authentication going to the Exchange server (this occurs if authentication is set to "Basic", "NTLM" or "negotiate").  Again, this was not an issue while on Exchange 2010 and non-RDS users do not have this issue while now on Exchange 2013.

Perhaps the issue is with the user profiles in the RDS environment (registry values for Exchange/Outlook need to be updated somehow)?  Perhaps the RDS sessions cannot communicate properly with Exchange since 2013 switched to using RPC over HTTPS?  Perhaps the RDS user logins are not set properly for the correct mail profile to be identified/assigned/authorized? We are trying to advise the customer where the issue lies, and could use some advice.

I have installed RDS licenses and activated, but licensing not assigning to host machines.

Roaming profile security permission issue.

We have a Windows 2012 RDS environment.  We redirect the user appdata and desktop to a centralized network share.

A new user login to one of a RDS server, his new profile is created in the network share.  When I inspect folder permission of his profile in the network share, I do not see he has access at all.  Only administrator group.

The local administrator group of that RDS server contains the domain admins group.  The local USERS group of the server contains the domain user group.

Under the security permission of the network share, I only grant the local USERS group to read only to "This Folder Only". This is because I do not want everybody to have access to everybody's profile.

Please advise if you know how to fix this or a better way to handle.

Thanks a lot.

Multiple TS sessions causing issues...

Hi all,

I have an issue with a 2008 r2 terminal server.

A line of business application is running on the server, remote users connect in and use the line of business application on the terminal server.

The line of business application has 5 user licenses, which mean 5 remote users can RDP into the terminal server and use the line of business application.

The issue is this...

some users seem to have TWO active RDP session from the same computer, I see this by logging into the terminal server, opening task manager then clicking the users tab. This of course causes issues with the licensing of the line of business application.

Is there a way I can prevent multiple RDP session for the same user on the terminal server?

Many thanks.

RemoteFX - Full Screen HD Video

I've been struggling with this for a while, and maybe it's just something that can't be done.  Or I just don't have things setup correctly.  Here are my server specs:

(2) E5-2697 v4 CPU

512GB RAM

4 960GB SM863 SSDs in RAID 10 array with LSI 3108 RAID controller

10 Gb network connection on server, 1Gb at client

Grid K1

So, hardware wise you'd think I'd be good to go.  I'm trying to play 720p videos from Youtube full screen, and maybe I'm expecting too much, but the quality just isn't great.  It's not smooth at all - it's not breaking up or pixelating, but  it's losing frames and jerky.  I've tried vGPU and no vGPU, Windows 8.1, Win 10 LTSB, and Win 10 1607.  With vGPU, I can get 60 fps in the fishbowl demo with 100 fishes, but the video, no go.  Windowed in Youtube is fine.

The VM has 2 vCPUs and dynamic memory up to 4GB.

So the first question is whether or not this is even possible so I'm not wasting time.  After that, what tuning parameters should I try?  There isn't a ton of info on this in searching, but I can verify that I'm using UDP.  I was wanting to test h.264 444 with 2016, but the Grid drivers won't load with that OS and my server, for whatever reason.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

RDP 10 4:4:4 Mode Issue

Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to evaluate the new RDP 10 4:4:4 mode.  I've setup the Win10 1607 virtual desktop on a 2016 TP5 host, and set all of the GPO settings.  If I connect to the 2016 Virtual Host, I get the following:

Event ID 162:  The client supports version 0xA0200 of the RDP graphics protocol, client mode: 2, AVC available: 1, Initial profile: 2048. Server:myservername

Event ID 162:  The client supports version 0xA0002 of the RDP graphics protocol, client mode: 0, AVC available: 1, Initial profile: 2048. Server: servername

Event ID 170:  AVC hardware encoder enabled: 1, encoder name is NVIDIA H.264 Encoder MFT. Server:servername

When I connect from the same client (Windows 10 1511) to the virtual desktop, I get this:

Event ID 162:  The client supports version 0xA0002 of the RDP graphics protocol, client mode: 2, AVC available: 1, Initial profile: 8. Server:servername

So, it never kicks in the 4:4:4 mode.

Can someone tell me why I'm getting different results from the same client?

Thanks,

Kevin

How to change default *.rdp file port number, when accessing using Web Access from an RDS installed Win 2012 R2 Server?

$

Env:

- Win 2012 R2, with RDS Role added, and Web Access enabled.

- Checked "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\PortNumber". Port number is already new (not 3389).

Problem: When accessing RmoteApp via Web Access, the downloaded *.rdp file (eg., cpub-javaws-Session-CmsRdsh.rdp) contains the default port # as 3389: "server port:i:3389"

How to change the downloaded *.rdp file's port number?

Hi guys,

My RDS license Server is 2012R2, I can't logon it.

How do I fix it?

Server 2012 R2 RDS - Printers are not mapped to Remote Session Host

$

Hi Everybody,

I'm totally out of ideas... Following problem:

We host an RDS Environment for our customer. The environment is hosted within an IBM Datacenter. They deliver the Operating System.

The environment consist of 20 Terminal Server 2012 R2 on VMWare.
With our old Environment (2008 R2) we used Easy Print to map the printers of the client. This worked perfect for years.

With the new Environment, the printers are not mapped anyhow.
To enable this, I tried all of the following points:

Mark the checkboxes for Easy Print.

No Success.

Set the properties via GPO.
No Success...

Installed the printer service
No Success...

The curious thing is, that the ports are mapped ( cant post images right now...) But the ports are shown in print server as TS001... Port type: write.
But no driver seems to be installed for them.

I googled the net up and down, but didn't found anything useful.
Additonally I gave Users full Access to c:\Windows\System32\Spool\Printers.
Also no success.

I have no idea, whats going wrong... There is not a single message in event logs pointing to printers. all silent... but just no printers.

I rebuild the environment testwise on Amazon EC2 with a current 2012 R2 Image... And voila... Out of the box the printers are mapped.
I'm beginning to think, that the 2012 R2 Image from IBM is somehow wrong...

But maybe I'm still missing something... Does anybody has an additonal idea?

Thanks,
Chris

Hello together.

We are running Windows 2012R2 RDS server. Server is cloud based and perform AD Domain Controller role. For past few days we received a lot of messages at EventViewer (.... RemoteDesktopService-RdpCoreTS section). By everything seems, that this are unauthorized attempts someone to access the server.

There is several IP addresses (5-6), for which we received this message in Event Viewer.

What we can do, to prevent this to continue to happen? We are with limited options as this is cloud based server in External Data Center, with allconsequentialbenefits and drawbacks.

Best Regards.

Live Migration of 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Server Disconnects Users w/Desktop Experience

$

We have a 4 node Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V failover cluster and amongst the VMs running on this cluster is a Windows Server 2012 R2 "terminal server".  The only roles/features installed are:Remote Desktop Session Host and Desktop Experience.

When I live migrate this VM to another cluster node, RDC users are disconnected.  This message is displayed for 5-10 seconds:

Reconnecting message

The client usually reconnects fine, but this is annoying.

I have many, many other Windows 2012 R2 servers running on this cluster.  When I live migrate any of those VMs, the RDC clients pause for 1-2 seconds (it appears to be hung), but then resumes working normally without a "Reconnecting" message.  None of the other VMs have this problem, but none of them have the above roles/features installed.

Our users don't mind a 1-2 second delay, but they are very annoyed with the 5-10 "reconnecting" behavior.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

UPDATE:

I've done much testing and determined that this problem is related to theDesktop Experience feature.

  1. I created a clean VM, installed Windows and updated it.
  2. I remoted into it, and live migrated the VM many, many times. The RDC would pause, but never display the "reconnecting" message.
  3. I installed the Desktop Experience feature, and rebooted as needed.
  4. I remoted into it, and live migrated the VM many, many times. Nearly every time, the RDC would disconnect and display the "reconnecting" message for 5-10 seconds.

Please help, thank you.

Screen flashes in Windows 2012 published apps.

Our users who use published app running from our Windows 2012 RDS servers are saying their app screen quick-flashes a few times every min.

The screen resolution on my RDS hosts is now 1920x1080.   I'd like to lower the resolution and see if the issue can be alleviated.  Where do I go make this change and how do I deliver the new lower resolution setting to the users?

Thanks.

Remote Desktop Works only after disconnecting and reconnecting the Ethernet Cable

Hi,

I have an office laptop with windows 8 installed. And I have an Office desktop with windows 7 installed.

Whenever I am trying to connect to the Desktop through Remote Desktop Connection, it throws an error "Remote Desktop cant connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons 1)..... 2)... 3)...... Make Sure....".

So I ask my colleagues to disconnect and reconnect the Ethernet Cable of my desktop and then I try again and it works.

Please let me know how to avoid this issue.

Multiple Terminal Servers with Load Balancing: Taskbar & Folder redirection issues

Hello,

One of ou're clients has 2 Terminal Servers (VS-TS-01-13 / VS-TS-02-13) and 1 Terminal Gateway. (VS-TG-01-13)

I've had to perform a reboot of both servers, and ever since some users have had problems logging on, or the taskbar is not showing and certain program's won't boot on VS-TS-01-13

But other users have the same issue on VS-TS-02-13 and not on the other.

I've included some logs regarding "VS-TS-02-13". I'm guessing the information provided will be enough. But in case you need more information I can certainly provide it.

Hi,

After looking at other threads, I couldn't find an direct answer to this problem.

The Powershell command fails with the following errors:
