Hi all , I have set up an RD Services test lab using Server 2012

test set up as follows

Host - Windows Server 2012 with Hyperv

VM's

DC - Domain Controller

App1 - RD Session Host -farm name (remote)

App2 - RD Session Host -farm name (remote)

Broker - RD Broker

internal connections 192.168.x.x addresses can connect to the farm (remote) and the load balancing seems to work fine, adding users the sessions alternate between servers, but when I connect from outside the network using the IP of the internet facing ip address , I would get connected to one server only (APP1) and never App2

I have also added the RRDNS farm name ip address for App1 and App2

although im not sure I need to do this in 2012. seems to be a 2008r2 thing. but tried it anyway.

did not seem to make any difference.

all the vms can ping each other

firewalls are off, and router ports forwarded

hope someone can help

thanks

2012 RDS + Gateway Certificate and and .local domains

Can someone verify this is the correct process to stop all certificate errors.

RDS 2012 R2 deployment that is the following.

1 server with broker web and gateway roles installed.

3 session hosts.

Domain is a .local

I want to stop all certificate errors. I have a certificate for the gateway/broker/web server gateway.xxx.com

I have had a look at the Change published FQDN for Server 2012 or 2012 R2 RDS Deployment script

https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Change-published-FQDN-for-2a029b80

Do i just need to run this script on the gateway/broker/web server and will this stop the mismatch errors fro the session hosts?

Thanks

Remote Desktop Services Properties - Operation failed: Access is denied

Hi

when i try to change the Remote Desktop Services User Profile Path with ADUC i get the error "Operation failed: Access is denied"

This error occurs in a subdomain with the Domain Admin of the Subdomain. I'm able to change this attribute with the Enterprise Admin.

As far as I understand this attribute is set in the userParameters but I don't know what permissions must be set to allow the Domain Admin to change this Attribute and why the Enterprise Admin is allowed to change the Attribute and the subdomain Admin not.

Our AD Schema is 2003.

RemoteFX: Guest OS Driver Unknown on Next Gen / Tech Prev

Hi

I see similar questions here but not the same as I'm having. I have a server for testing the new server with RemoteFX. Physical server is installed with Windows Server Technical Preview. Enabled Hyper-V. All drivers are installed including NVidia drivers. Installed a guest server running the same OS.

As I can see from this post: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2014/11/05/remotefx-vgpu-updates-in-windows-server-next.aspx it should be supported to have the RemoteFX graphic adapter in the guest OS with Windows server Tech Prev. I have a unknown device in my device manager that I cant install the driver for.

What have I missed?

Remote Desktop Connection Client (mstsc.exe) Uses ALOT of memory connecting from 2012 to 2012 servers

I have a Windows Server 2012R2 using Remote Desktop Connection client (MSTSC.exe), I've noticed RD connections from WIndows Server 2012 to 2012 (R2 or non-R2) same deal, memory consumption is significantly higher, i've seen sessions go upwards of 500MB in memory consumption.  While I have set group policies to optimize memory and disable as much unnecessary features as possible (see screenshot), which seem to work for older versions of Server such as 2003. and 2008, some of these policies do not work for 2012 as it says in the description.  Does anyone know how to optimize memory in remote desktop connection client (mstsc.exe)?

Unable to Enable User Profile Disks in RDP server 2012R2

I am setting up a new Windows server that will act as an RDP server. The server has been built with Windows Server 2012R2.

I have the following roles and services working on the server: RD Web Access, RD Gateway, RD Licencing (with 30 user cal licences), the RD Connection broker, and the RD session host.

I have a SSL certificate configured and installed on the site, and both external and internal DNS are configured and working.

I have created and published an application collection and this is working. That is, when you go to https://remote.<servername>.org you are presented with a log in screen, users can log in with their domain accounts and then can connect to the published applications, this is working both on our internal network and from the general internet.

So all the roles on the server are working and the collection itself is also working. However, what I cannot do is set it up so that we can use user profile disks with that collection. When I go through the Session Collection Wizard and I get to "User Profile Disks" I can click on "Enable user profile disks" and then you can enter the options below.

I am entering the share location under location \\<servername>\<sharename>

I am using the default "store all user settings and data on the user profile disk"

Then I go to create the profile disks and I get the following error:

"Could not create the template VHD. Error Message: -2147024809

This has happened multiple times, I have done the following:

- installed all windows updates and rebooted the server, same error

- checked the share permissions AND the folder permission for that share, for testing purposes I have set permissions on both the folder and the share to allow full control to "everyone" (I also tried it with only "domain users") but same error message.

- I have checked to see that no quotas are imposed on the disk where I am attempting to create the profile disks  - this was because this was the closest thing I could find on Technet was this post:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/ru-RU/aec30527-d742-42b9-950e-85c709c4cb45/vdi-problem-creating-user-profile-disks?forum=winserverhyperv

And that was a quota issue that I am not having.

The UPD wizard says the following "the servers in the collection must have full control permission on the user profile disk share and the current user must be a member of the local Administrators group on that server"

Both of those things are true.

I have attempted to search for that specific error message (-2147024809) and have found nothing on Technet or any other site.

I am hoping someone here has some thoughts.  Thanks in advance.

Hi Guys,

I'm planning to deploy a RDS server on 2012 R2 with user based licensing

I have total 50 users in AD but only 20 users will be using remote desktop at  same time (concurrent users)

I'm wondering whether i needs to apply 50 CALS or only 20 CALS on RDS server

Kindly revert as soon as possible

Many Thanks in advance

Sandeep

All of a sudden my Windows 7 x64 computer is unable to connect to random Windows 2008 R2 servers via Remote Desktop.

I can connect to the same servers from other Windows 7 machines.

The only fix I've come across so far is this, except that key doesn't exist on either my machine or on the server(s):

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Start Registry Editor.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TermService\Parameters
  3. Under this registry subkey, delete the following values:
    • Certificate
    • X509 Certificate
    • X509 Certificate ID
  4. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the server.

Does anyone have any suggestions please as I'm at a total loss what is happening here.

Thanks.

restrict C drive of RDS session host while still allowing user profile disks to work

I have a new 2012 R2 RDS server setup and I enabled user profile disks. Since I have the C drive on the RDS server restricted with group policy, users are unable to access their downloads folder. There may be other folders they can't access but I haven't noticed yet. This is happening because the user profile disk mounts to the C drive of the RDS. How do I restrict access to the RDS server local drives but still enable user profile disks to work?

I have seen many posts about this but no solutions.

Thanks,

Justin

How to run a remote app with admin privilages

$

I have an application set as a remote app (W2012) that works fine.  As long as only one person at a time runs it.

In order to set the application to run in multi-user mode, I have to use a switch "/m".  This actually works well, but ONLY if the application (with the correct switch) is run with administrator privs. I tested it by logging on to the server with two different accounts at the same time, starting up the command prompt with admin privs mode, and kicking off the application with the correct switch.  Both sessions ran the same application at the same time with no problems.  But ONLY if the switch was used AND with admin privs.

So my issue is attempting to create the the remote app (or a vbscript/powershell sequence that is published as a remote app) to run with administrative privs.

Questions:

1.  Is this possible to do?

2.  If done, would this prove to be a big security concern for the server?  The application itself can do no harm whether run with or without admin privs as it is built to only allow "read/view".

3.  Can this work with UAC enabled on the server or would that have to be disabled?  It seems as if the user might get a UAC prompt (even an admin on a server will get a UAC prompt if just to click OK).

Thanks,

GeoffW

How to set up remote desktop licensing mode in windows server 2012

$

Hi,

I've deployed yesterday a windows 2012 server (RTM) and set up the license server for my 10-CAL licenses. That's ok.

But I can not see a way to point my server to see the license server. Every time I log in, I receive a message that the RD services will expire in 119 days.

Using the diagnosis tool it says that licensing mode isn't set up.

Where I can find the tool to set up this licensing mode? In windows server 2008 this question was asked in the setup wizadr.

Thanks a lot!

Quick question.  I had exported a start screen for a windows 2012r2 RDS server.  No problems.

I had to update some of the tiles as there's shortcuts on the desktop that point to UNC paths...right clicked Add to Start.

The start screen looks correct when i run the export-startscreen powershell command.

When i log into RDS I get the "updated" screen but the tiles that point to UNC paths, missing!

Any idea?

RDS Remote Desktop Gateway User Authentication - stop using pre-Windows 2000 logon name.

Greetings,

With the ongoing move to the Office 365 environments we're trying to remain consistent in directing our users to use their standard logon name and not their pre-windows 2000 logon name.

We have a Remote Desktop Gateway 2012 R2 server that works wonderfully but I've noticed that credentials can only be passed by using the pre-windows 2000 logon name for a user, and not the standard logon name. Within the network the standard logon name can be used with RDP and everything functions just fine. However when coming through the RDG (which sits in the perimeter/DMZ) it doesn't authenticate with the normal user logon name.

I've poked around the various settings in RDG and RDS but I've not found a place where this option can be specified. Anyone run into this yet? Anyone have any pointers?

Best third party tool or other option to compress print jobs?

$

We have gone from W2k3 and Citrix PS4.5 to a W2k12R2 RDS environment. Most of the issues have been worked out and I have the majority of heavy printers printing via network shared printers that are deployed via Group Policy rather than Redirected printers due to speed.

Even with using the non local redirected printers, printing is still slower than in the old W2k3/PS4.5 world. I have a user that batch prints a 100 documents a couple times of day and instead of processing 4 invoices per second it is now 1 per second. I have Client Side Rendering turned off. I believe the compression that the Citrix Univeral print driver delivered was the reason for this superior performance.

What have others done that wanted to say good buy to ICA, but still wanted good printing speed?

Can't remove RD Virt Servers from RD Connection Broker

$

I have a single 2012 R2 server running CB, GW, WA with a single VD collection of 4 VM's. I had in the past added a couple of VH servers to add more collections, but the project colapsed and I was left with disolving the VH servers and just having the origninal VH to run everything. The problem is I didn't use a HA sql db for the connection broker, and when I removed the other servers that were in the server pool, I didn't do it the right way. I just disolved the servers without removing them from the pool first. Now I can't see my VD collection because it says that I have to readd the 2 servers back into the server pool first. When I run PS>Get-RDServer to see if I can use the remove command, it just gives me "The RD Connection Broker is not available." I'm running the command from the CB, I have a user using the VDC, so I know it's working. I just can't figure out how to remove the servers without having to build them again, readd them, and then remove them. Any ideas anyone?

Unable to install new RDS Session Hosts 2012R2

We currently have an 2012R2 RDS environment running 8 farms across 12 session hosts from one connection broker. Recently I went to provision 2 new Session Hosts (one to a new farm and one to an existing) however they both fail with the following error in the Server Manager Wizard:

Access is denied
The term 'Get-LocalMachineFqdn' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again.

I've also tried installing from PowerShell without success.

Has anyone come across this before? I haven't been able to find anything in my searches on the web let alone find anything of use in the event viewer.

Cheers,

Ryan.
