I have a need for a small server that can run RDS for a medical office with 4 client computers. Can a single Win2012r2 server with RDS run in this environment without having to also add a Domain Controller? For so few resources to manage I was hoping to be able to just install a simple Windows server with RDS and the application and a printer and not need to virtualize or deal with a domain controller at all. But I cannot find info on whether this is even possible. Thanks
AD required to manage RDS?
User only gets temprary profile on 2012 Terminal Server
Have a 3-Host Remote Desktop Services farm using 2012 R1. We are using User Profile Disks with "Store all user settings and data on the user profile disk" enabled. The user has full control rights to the UPD share and NTFS permissions.
One user cannot login with his standard profile - he keeps getting a temporary profile.
I have already tried deleting his SID from the profile list in the registry here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
After I reboot and try logging his account in again, it will create a temporary profile and leave a .bak profile SID in the registry. I have tried renaming that to remove the .bak with no luck.
All other users don't seem to be having any issues.
I get Event ID 1515 on user profile service: "Windows has backed up this user profile. Windows will automatically try to use the backup profile the next time this user logs on."
And: Event ID 1511: Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile.
Any ideas?
"Printing Preferences" window blocking the printing preferences
Hi all,
Sorry for the title.
But i did not know how to wrote it any other way.
Here´s my problem.
I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Server which we use for an application via Remote Desktop Services.
If i try to print something out of the application (German ERP Software) i get the normal "Print Setup" Window:
Then i change to a redirected printer and use "Properties..."
Then i see the following window:
This window stays in front. There is the right window with the printing preferences but it is in the back and i can not change to this window. I have to change to another application (Alt+Tab) and back to my RDS application. Now the right window is in front. If i select "OK" or "Cancel" in the right window both windows disappear and it works.
Does anyone know how to change this? I do not want to have the RDS-"Printing Preferences" window in front. For me the best solution would be to deactivate it. Is this possible?
I searched on google and this forum for a while, but i did not find anything about this.
I tried this with several printers. The problem occours on every printer with the Type "Remote Desktop Easy Print".
Please let me know if you need further informartion and thanks a lot!

A timeout 30000 Milliseconds Was Reached

Single Sign On does not work if RD Gateway is being used
Server 2012 R2 with Remote Desktop Services installed. All RDS roles hosted on a single server.
Single Sign On fails to work when RD gateway is installed and being used by clients. After spending dozens of hours on this seemingly simplistic problem following every single guide I could find on the internet about setting up single sign on, I have finally found an answer and am going to post it here for somebody else in the future.
Don't ask me why I couldn't find a single reference to this problem anywhere on the internet. Its probably because of the multiple layers of authentication Microsoft has built into RemoteApp that nobody actually knows the right question to ask. I admit that over half the time I spent was just figuring out at which stage SSO broke down requiring me to authenticate.
The simple problem is that despite all the resources available on how to setup single sign on with RDS on Server 2012, it simply DOES NOT WORK when the RD Gateway role is also instaled. No matter what I tried I kept being prompted for credentials on my domain joined PCs when I would try to fire up a remoteapp from the start menu and through RDWeb.
Simple answer, set the following group policy for your domain users:
Users / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Remote Desktop Services / RD Gateway / Set RD Gateway Authentication Method = Enabled / Use Locally Logged-on Credentials
This solved my problem. I found that the default behavior for RDP is always prompt for credentials when connecting to an RD Gateway.
This obviously isn't the only thing that needs to be setup for SSO, but the truth is I would've had SSO setup following some simple guides on the internet in probably 30 minutes instead of 3 days if it hadn't been for this overlooked problem. Hope it helps somebody else!

RDP connection takes too long when to or from win 2012 R2 domain controller VM
Hi friedns
i am experiencing an strange problem. on my test system i have these 3 hyper-v test virtual machines:
VM1 = windows server 2012 R2 Datacenter Domain Controller
VM2 & VM3 = standalone windows server 2012 R2 Datacenter
i have not created or edited any Group policy settings.
on all tree vms, in the remote desktop section on system properties, i have cleared the checkbox related to NLA, so that RDP be established faster since here is a test lab & no security concern exist.
when i establish RDP connection between VM2 & VM3 (which are not joined to domain), everything works fine & RDP connection is established fast (takes about 3 seconds)
but when i start RDP connection from Domain controller (vm1) to either VM2 or VM3 , or from vm2 or vm3 to domain controller (vm1), it takes about 20 seconds showing "Securing Remote connection" to be established & log in.
(in all vms when i open up mstsc, i have selected to use minimum color dept & resolution & bandwith is set to dialup)
what setting in DC 2012 R2 causes this ?
thanks in advanced
Redirected Printer is not working
Hello all,
We have a Windows Server 2012 R2 terminal server. We have set up two Lenovo thin clients to remote access this terminal server. The problem is that the redirected printer is not working on one of the thin client but works on the other one. I have made the same settings on both of the thin clients.
The difference between these two thin clients is like following.
1. Printer: The one that is working is Canon printer and the one that is not working is HP printer.
2. They use different ISPs.
All other settings are the same. I did not find any error code from the event viewer too. The only thing that I have is this error message when I tried to print a test page. "Test page failed to print. Would you like to view the print troubleshooter for assistance?" And when I click "Yes", it said I did not have the related service installed and I could not find the error code for this issue.
Does anyone have any ideas on this issue? Please share this.
Thank you very much.
Confirming port 7072 and 7074 open for BitDefender
Hello,
I installed Bitdefender Small Office Security on our Server 2008 R2 box and windows 7 Pro on the client. BD support said port 7072 is being blocked on the 7 client. I originally disabled Windows firewall on the 7 client and was using BD's firewall. I was not able to connect to BD on the server. BD said they had known issues with W Firewall. I open Windows firewall on 7 client and went to allow program or feature through. Bitdefend does not show up in this list. When I click to allow another program only BD open security console and BD repair or uninstall are listed. I allow both of these but still no luck.
Thank you

How to define a background for a remote desktop session that is locked in a program - server 2012 R2?
We have Remote Desktop configured on Windows Server 2012 R2 to “start a program on connection” (via Group Policy). It is a “standard” deployment of Remote Desktop Services with session-based connections. Desktop Experience is also installed on the server.
Everything works as expected, however we are unable to set a background color for the desktop behind the program that is started on connection.
In previous versions of remote desktop, we could log on to the console (or to a session that was not locked into the application) and set a background color, and then that color would then be displayed behind the program that is started on connection. With 2012 R2, we cannot change the black screen that is displayed behind the program. We have tried personalizing the desktop, group policy settings for background, registry settings, etc. We can display a background using any of those methods when the user is not locked into the application, but as soon as we apply the “Start a program on connection” setting, the background turns black. Is there a way to make the background some other color when the user is locked into an application? We have tried this with (Group Policy, User Configuration, Policies, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Remote Desktop Services, Remote Desktop Session Host, Remote Session Environment) “Remove remote desktop wallpaper” both “Disabled” and “Not configured”, telling the client to allow “Desktop background” and “Desktop composition”. Our goal is not to bring along a background, but simply to have an option to display something with less contrast that the plain black background screen.
Thanks in advance for your response!
