Is Remote Desktop Services 2012 R2 compatible with SQL Server 2014 AlwaysOn Availability Groups?  Are there any procedural documents available for RDS requirements on how it expects AlwaysOn to be configured?

Thanks

how to disable RD Connection broker load balancing

Hi All,

I have a RDS Farm with 1 RD broker and 2 session host servers on windows server 2012 R2.

I want to disable RD Broker load balancing but still want to use broker for managing broker the sessions centrally.

Is it possible to have broker only manage connection table for re connection of existing sessions and the load balancing part done with F5 load balancer?

Somehow broker is not doing the load balancing for NATed IP.

Abhishek

Windows Server 2012 -RDS Session Broker- unable to find the option "Chose the option for re connection"

Hi Experts,

Looking for some help on RDS load balancing. Background and Issue is explained below;

Background: I am setting up a RDS farm using Windows Server 2012 R2 servers.

Using 1 broker and 2 session host servers.

As far as I have explored Windows Server 2012 , Farm does not seems to exist any more and functionality is replaced by "Collection"

I have created a collection on RDS broker and added 2 session host servers.

Client connections to session host servers are load balanced properly based on the default weight defined in collection setting-->load balancing.

Even if i connect to Session host server A or Session Host server B, Its the broker deciding where the session should go. Looks good.

Broker's default load balancing characteristics: When broker is doing the load balancing, It randomly chooses the session host server and returns back the least loaded session host server back to client. For example , In a normal RDS connection , when we connect to a server , we get a certificate pop-up saying identity of server is not matching the certificate , click on yes to proceed, so here we come to know we are connecting to server A.

When session broker does the load balancing, i get this certificate pop up second time because broker is redirecting my session to a least loaded server, instead of connecting to server A my session is redirected to server B. This works perfectly fine if i just say "yes" on certificate pop-up.

Issue: Due to some specific project requirement, The real IP of server A and Server B have been NATed, so both Server A and Server B have thier corresponding NATed IPs. From client machines 3389(RDP) is allowed only to Nated IPs.

Logically the NATed IP will be translated to real IP at Network device and that's how it will work.

When a client connects to Nated IP of server A and luckily if broker also thinks the session should go to Server A, user gets a session, but when a client connects to Server A but broker thinks that session should go Server B, Broker redirects the session to real IP of server B, which is not allowed to be accessed from Clients machine.(Only NATed IP is allowed for RDP). so here the connection will not be established.

So to summarize the issue: The client machine can't connect to RDS Load balanced session host servers when their IPs are Nated because Broker redirects the request to real IP of server.

Possible solution: As per Windows server 2008 R2 , when we create a RDS farm , we have a option to choose the IP for re connection. This setting is available Here Administrative Tools > Remote Desktop Services and double-click Member of Farm in RD Connection Broker (you can also choose right-click then Properties) , shown below is picture of IP re connection setting( Window Server 2008)

So i can map an additional NIC to RD session host server and give the Nated IP of that server to additional NIC. In above shown option for IPs to be used for re connection, i can check the box on the NIC with Nated ip, so broker will use the Nated IP while doing the load balancing.

I can't find "Chose the IP for re connection" option in Windows server 2012.

Appreciate you patience to read the scenario. Please let me know if you know the fix for this  or any suggestion on this.

Best Regards,

Abhishek

Is it possible to get Remote Desktop Services running when in Sysprep Audit mode in 2012r2?

Hi,

I'm setting up some images for 2012r2 and personally like to be able to access the machines via RDP. I have broken out of the OOBE by pressingCTRL+SHIFT+F3, however, even though RDP is enabled (System --> Remote Setting) and running (Services --> Remote Desktop Services), when I run 'netstat -a', I cannot see any process bound to port 3389, as such I cannot connect. Have restarted the services just in case, but no dice.

I most the other OS setups (Windows 7, 208R2) this is fine (assuming you update either the password in audit mode or enable RDP login with a blank password), but the fact that nothing is listening on 3389 means that no matter what I do, I will not be able to connect.

Is there any reason why this is the case?

Cheers

Chris

Windows Server 2012 Essentials - Remote Desktop Services

Hi Experts,

I was hoping someone would be able to provide me with some guidance.

We have recently purchased Windows Server 2012 Essentials as well as 5 RDP user CALS.

We do not have a domain or any other servers. We only require 5 people from various locations to be able to remotely log into the server and work on a program that is installed on it.

However, the setup and configuration of the Remote Desktop Services did not go as planned. After many attempts and various configuration settings, it still doesn't work.

What I am lead to believe is that the Essentials version of Server 2012 doesn't support being the RDP Gateway and License Server and Host. However, nowhere can I confirm this, I have searched many forums where people are experiencing the same problems, but nowhere can I find answers.

If there is anyone out there that might be able to shed some light and maybe point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and Regards,

Wynand.

RDP using Smartcard fails with NLA for non-domain members

$

We have to administer Windows 2008 R2 servers which are in domains we are not members of - typically domains that support a particular application. We have DoD smartcards (CAC) and we admin from our Windows 7 desktops. If we disable NLA, we can CAC-authenticate over RDP just fine. With NLA enabled, though, we get "The remote computer you are trying to connect to requires NLA but your Windows domain controller cannot be contacted to perform NLA".

My assumption would be that the Win7 desktops would never know where the particular ADCs are, since we're not domain members, but that they actually need to verify the DoD root cert that signed our CAC. Said root cert has been installed on our desktops and on the servers in the domains.

What is necessary to get NLA with smart cards working for non-domain members?

Edit: With NLA enabled I *can* connect over RDP from one of the domain members to another, so this really seems specific to the non-member desktop settings and how it performs NLA

Session Shadowing on vertically flipped monitor beside normally oriented monitor.

Hi,

I tested recently the session shadowing capabilities of our new Windows 2012 R2 farm and I noticed that session shadowing on a vertically flipped monitor is not working properly.

My setup: 1x24" vertically flipped monitor and 1x19" normally oriented monitor. Session shadowing is being initiated inside an RDP session on our management server.

when I initialize the session shadowing the smaller monitor is being shown correctly and the bigger one is well, see for yourself :)

Did anyone ells have this issue and found a solution?

Would appreciate any help.

Kind regards,

Dan.

Every Since Windows 7 one of the MS updates changes the way MSTSC connects to the servers and I get this message each and every time I try to remote to the virtual desktops within XenCenter.

Unable to connect to Remote Desktop Gateway from Windows Phone

ConnectMe keeps giving an SSL error. From any other mobile OS, it works fine. From all desktops around the world, including macs, it works fine.

any ideas?

This started happening after we switched from a self signed SSL to GoDaddy. It seems the Windows Phone doesn't see GoDaddy as a trusted root CA.

Hi

I need help - desperately

I keep getting this error time and time again on Server 2012 R2 when trying to install Remote Desktop Services.

the server has been promoted to domain controller and other than that nothing else has been done.

Cannot find anything regarding this error on the server 2012 R2 all on the internet  (there is an article for Server 2012 though, but hot fix does not apply to R2)  , and my previous post has been all but ignored.

Client Access denied

Hello

I can successfully connect over the VPN to W2003 R2 as Admin and get the desktop.  I configure for another client, make make sure "Dial-In" is to allow access, create an Accounting group, add him to Accounting, add Remote Desktop Users to that group, create a RRAS policy for Accounting, add both him and Accounting to the Remote Desktop Users group, and STILL I cannot access RDP as that user.  It says "log on must be enable from Terminal Services..."  Again it works perfectly for Administrator but never for any other created account.  Please advise

RD Gateway Licenses

Hi all

I am currently looking at a RDP deployment, I know that you need a RDP license for each client, but am I required as well to get a RD Gateway License as well a RDP License? I just would like to get this cleared up as I have been told both yes and no to this question.

Thanks in advance.

Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because the remote desktop gateway server is temporarily not available.

I have a RDS VDI deployment set on 2 servers and connection from internal Network works fine, but not from the public Network.

From public Network, user Access to RDWeb site, selects his VDI deployment, enters credentials and then after some loading the RDS hits this error:Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because the remote desktop gateway server is temporarily not available.

If you need to see my Network topology, open this: https://scontent-b-fra.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfp1/t31.0-8/10830713_10152421224170404_57593645548357168_o.jpg

Basically, I have 2 servers I use in RDS deployment;

Hyperv2.labs.dom is domain joined HyperV host with VDI host, connection broker and license service installed. It holds VDI machines.

RRAS.labs.dom is another server, which connects my entire lab to internet with different gateways (RRAS role), and I installed Web role and RD Gateway role to this server via RDS deployment (server manager).

Both servers are 2012 R2.

I tried to do few things:

- I set self-signed certificate for every role and added it to IIS 443 binding, and also to RD Gateway setup. Certificate is the same for everything.

- I tried this article, http://blogs.msdn.com/b/hyperyash/archive/2012/12/11/remote-desktop-services-gateway-configuration-for-rds-farm.aspx .. setting my hyperv2 adress as resource. I don´t have a farm though.

Any thoughts? Perhaps I have dome something wrong with my roles?

"Printing Preferences" window blocking the printing preferences

$

Hi all,

Sorry for the title.
But i did not know how to wrote it any other way.

Here´s my problem.

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Server which we use for an application via Remote Desktop Services.
If i try to print something out of the application (German ERP Software) i get the normal "Print Setup" Window:

Then i change to a redirected printer and use "Properties..."

Then i see the following window:

This window stays in front. There is the right window with the printing preferences but it is in the back and i can not change to this window. I have to change to another application (Alt+Tab) and back to my RDS application. Now the right window is in front. If i select "OK" or "Cancel" in the right window both windows disappear and it works.

Does anyone know how to change this? I do not want to have the RDS-"Printing Preferences" window in front. For me the best solution would be to deactivate it. Is this possible?

I searched on google and this forum for a while, but i did not find anything about this.

I tried this with several printers. The problem occours on every printer with the Type "Remote Desktop Easy Print".

Please let me know if you need further informartion and thanks a lot!

Regards Nils
