RDS 2012 R2: A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the (name-of-service) service

$

Hi guys,

On a random base (daily, weekly) we're experiencing major log-in problems on our Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services farm. The VM's are hosted on Hyper-V 2008 hosts and we're not using Citrix techniques etc.

Users are reporting that they cannot log-in, the log-in sessions hangs with a blank screen when loading their user profile (e.g. Please Wait For The User Profile Service).

In the System event log of the server on which the user is logging on the following errors are shown:

Source:        Service Control Manager
Date:          23-12-2014 7:28:01
Event ID:      7011
Task Category: None
Level:         Error
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Description:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

…and after 30 (or sometimes 60) seconds, the same error only another service (in random order):

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

…and after exactly 30 seconds, the same error only another service:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UxmSms service.

etcetera, with the following errors:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the Netman service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the AudioEndPointBuilder service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the WPDBusEnum service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the NlaSvc service.

The Portable Device Enumerator Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the TrkWks service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

These errors are logged continuously.

An administrator cannot solve this since he isn't able to login in as well (console or remotely), only a hard reset of the VM is possible to use the affected server again.

I took different steps to solve this problem without any success, like:

- Installing the latest Windows updates
- Removed unnecessary printer drivers, print monitors and print processors (no local printers/drivers are installed, only Remote Desktop Easy Printer driver is used)
- Searched different forum posts, but found only hotfixes for Windows Server 2008 R2.

Can someone please help me with this annoying problem?

Many thanks!!

EDIT:
Of course is increasing the time-out not really an option here... http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/13765.event-id-7011-service-timeout.aspx

Continued black screen after login problem

I have searched and tried a massive variety of solutions offered on MS and other sites. So far, nothing seems to be much help. Others are not describing the problem the exact same way I see it, so let me explain what I end up with.

When logging into Server 2012 R2 running on an Intel S2600CP motherboard, the login is accepted and the screen goes black.  This happens both at the system logging in locally and also when using Remote Desktop Services.  It does not do it every time, but less than every fourth time.  If you allow it to sit, then you will get a desktop in about 10 minutes.  If using remote, you can disconnect from the session and remote right back in.  When you do so, you get the desktop immediately.  If you are local and get the black screen, you can remote and get the desktop immediately.  Then you can log back in locally and the desktop works fine as well.  All MS updates have been installed and Windows Updates reports that there are no further updates available.  This happens with user and administrator accounts via remote.

Most places point back to MS update 2887595 as a possible solution.  I do not find this update installed or offered.  I do have the current update rollups showing as installed.  In the 2887595 it reports that installing it on certain system will cause those systems to crash.

Looking for other items to try as the problem still has not been resolved.

Recent Places Folder

Hello,

I am using Windows 8.1 and my file explorer is pinned to the taskbar.  In windows 7 I would be able to see the recent folders visited when I right clicked on FE.  In windows 8.1, I was able to do this too.  But recently I cannot see the recent files when I right click on FE.  Something changed and I could not figure out what.  I have tried to check and uncheck the jumplist options and pinned the recent places folder to the taskbar -but nothing worked.  As a matter of fact - no matter how many folders I open, the recent places folder is always empty.  How do I populate this and the FE.  Thanks for all help.

Font smoothing settings doesn't consistently work for every login on Windows 2008 R2 when using a RDP client

I'm trying to use the MSTSC client on a Windows 8.1 machine to connect to a Windows 2008 R2 server. In the MSTSC experience tab I checked the font smoothing option. Font smoothing works some times and doesn't work the other times. I don't see a pattern here.

any kind of help is much appreciated.

Thanks,

2012 R2 RemoteApp - Basic Theme issue

Hi All

I refer to this article below, is there a fix from MS for this issue?

We are reviewing migration from Citrix to RemoteApp, but this is causing a reluctance in change.

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/44f33bd6-aa45-48cb-b886-352330e3f47c/win2012-std-basic-theme-problem-?forum=winserver8gen

Hello,

Somehow Windows Basic Theme broken, hyperlinks are changed to yellow, I cant event read text on menus. Also RDP users have same problem when they connect. How can I fix it ?

I installed Desktop Experience, and with Aero theme its ok on administrator RDP , but other users on RDP have same problems.

I resolved this by following:

  • I've just tried this (thank you Saad)

Open %windir%\Resources. Change security properties of the "Themes" folder and give full control permission to your account. Enable inheritance to apply this setting for all sub folders, or, open "Themes" folder, and give full control permission to your account on file "basic.theme".

This first step will allow you to modify the "basic.theme" file

    - On "Themes" folder, right click "basic.theme" and click "open with". Choose Notepad.

    - Click on ctrl+f and search for "aerolite.msstyles". Once you find it, replace it by "aero.msstyles".

    - Save this. After that, go on control panel - personalization, apply a theme randomly, then reapply the Windows Basic theme.

This indeed worked for me, however somehow I think this isn't a true root cause resolution and am waiting for it to bite me later....

Many thanks

I am trying to setup HA for my three connection brokers.

SQL Server

  • I have added the instance with the login with the three connection brokers in the group on the domain and have enabled the dbcreator and public for that user login. All named pipes and TCP/IP settings are enabled on the instance with the right IP address and port numbers.

Connection Brokers

  • I have installed the native client that matches the SQL installation

I am not able to get this going, I continue to get this error.

FYI, my SQL server is on another server but is working good for my other SQL instances for my other databases

Help me :)

Remote Desktop Gateway server is temporarily unavailable

I have used a remote desktop website to access my jobs medical records apps from home, for years. All of the sudden a week ago while trying to log in I receive the error message stating, "Your computer cant connect to the remote computer because the Remote Desktop Gateway server is temporarily unavailable. Try reconnecting later or contact your network administrator for details." I have no idea what this means and the IT department told me at work it had to do with my network/internet at home. But it does not work on my computer at all using my wifi or anyone elses. The only thing I can think of is that it has to be something with my computer. I have Windows 8 and it used to work fine. Does anyone know what I should do? If so, could I get some step by step instructions? It would be greatly appreciated!!!

Please tell me what CALs I need to do mstsc of WinServer

I have recently purchased windows server and now wants to purchase some user CALs. Few users will do mstsc of WinServer from within the premises and few customers will do the mstsc from remote location, a different city. Remote user will login via internet connection into the LAN and then do mstsc of WinServer.

Please tell me exactly what products has to be purchased to facilitate this. I have zeroed in on the below:

1. WinSvrCAL 2012 SNGL OLP NL UsrCAL

2. WinRmtDsktpSrvcsCAL 2012 SNGL OLP NL UsrCAL

If this is correct, then please guide on how exactly this works? For example, The user doing mstsc from within premises requires item 1 only and users doing mstsc
from different city requires item 2 only, or both 1 and 2 is required in both case.

The terminal server services gives a countdown of 120 days from date of installation and ultimately expires and all connections thru mstsc stops. And then the server is reinstalled. So one major concern is whether purchase of these CALs will stop this inconvinience for ever?

Please reply asap. CAL requirement is very urgent but can not proceed unless this clarity comes from you.

All the terminal services are installed on a single server, Domain Controller is installed on a separate one.

When I try to add RemoteApp Application to the collection i get the error bellow::

Can any one help solve this problem, I tried to trouble shoot  this with out success.

RDS 2003R2 with Outlook 2010 credential saving issues

Windows server 2003R2 with terminal services installed. - updated

MS Office 2010 installed on the terminal server - updated

if we configure an Outlook profile on the TermServer with one user, Outlook does not prompt us for credentials upon opening.

we want to check two mailboxes, so we add an additional mail user to the same profile and Outlook prompts for both passwords upon opening

in the stored passwords applet in control panel i try to add an additional credential for the mail server, but it simply edits the existing credential - i was able to add an additional credential to the same mail server by using the netbios name, and the FQDN name, and both show up the the stored passwords applet, but it does not solve the issue.

I have looked at other posts, but none seemed to have these symptoms.

Using Windows7 as a client presents no problems with multiple credentials leading me to suspect it has something to do with Windows server 2003R2.

Ideas as to the cause of the issue, or possible solutions appreciated - ThankYou

Remote Desktop Gateway service timeout and hang with Azure MFA

$

I've installed a server with Remote Desktop Gateway role and configured it according to guidance in http://www.rdsgurus.com/uncategorized/step-by-step-using-windows-server-2012-r2-rd-gateway-with-azure-multifactor-authentication/. This works fine when I accept or reject the phone call within 30 seconds. If the MFA server doesn't respond within those 30 seconds the Remote Desktop Gateway service hangs itself and needs a restart to start working again (it also doesn't shut down gracefully, needs to time out).

I've set the Remote Radius Server timeouts to different values between 20 and 90 seconds but this timeout seems to be hardcoded somewhere as suggested in https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/cbcb46e3-9dc4-4079-a254-d5d8a0f78b95/remote-desktop-gateway-authentication-timeout-change?forum=winserverTS (original post is old but newest post is in regards to Azure MFA)

I've tried installing again from scratch with Windows Server 2012R2, with just Windows 2012. I've also tried different setups:

- Local NPS proxying to MFA server

- Central NPS proxying to MFA server

- Local NPS proxying to MFA which proxies to Central NPS

They all work but all have the same 30 second limit and my Remote Desktop Gateway service hangs.

Looking around on the internet it looks like there are people that have this working so I'm not sure what the difference is between their setup and mine or if they've never tested this scenario. I think the 30 seconds timeout should be enough for just voice call authentication without PIN if I can just stop my RDG service from dying.

Certain Users Can not connect

I am running Server 2008 R2

I am getting the errors message stating this computer can't connect to the remote computer. However I can have any other users connect so it is not a firewall issue. I duplicated the issue on my computer and it is affecting certain usernames. They have been given administrative permissions as well.

I can create a new username and no issues connecting remotely.

Hi All,

Is there a a recommended maximum amount of concurrent connections per Windows 2012 RDS host?I am trying to figure out how many hosts to provide for a user base of 60-70 users.

Also how does the resource configuration change for each host, ie, memory, cpu...etc

Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because the remote desktop gateway server is temporarily not available.

I have a RDS VDI deployment set on 2 servers and connection from internal Network works fine, but not from the public Network.

From public Network, user Access to RDWeb site, selects his VDI deployment, enters credentials and then after some loading the RDS hits this error:Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because the remote desktop gateway server is temporarily not available.

If you need to see my Network topology, open this: https://scontent-b-fra.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfp1/t31.0-8/10830713_10152421224170404_57593645548357168_o.jpg

Basically, I have 2 servers I use in RDS deployment;

Hyperv2.labs.dom is domain joined HyperV host with VDI host, connection broker and license service installed. It holds VDI machines.

RRAS.labs.dom is another server, which connects my entire lab to internet with different gateways (RRAS role), and I installed Web role and RD Gateway role to this server via RDS deployment (server manager).

Both servers are 2012 R2.

I tried to do few things:

- I set self-signed certificate for every role and added it to IIS 443 binding, and also to RD Gateway setup. Certificate is the same for everything.

- I tried this article, http://blogs.msdn.com/b/hyperyash/archive/2012/12/11/remote-desktop-services-gateway-configuration-for-rds-farm.aspx .. setting my hyperv2 adress as resource. I don´t have a farm though.

Any thoughts? Perhaps I have dome something wrong with my roles?

The users have a SSL cert installed with the private key so they can access a certain web site and when they access the site using the Windows 2012 R2 RDP server they are getting prompted with a Windows Security dialogue (Confirmation Certificate) and they press ok. Another user will now get the next message asking if to allow or deny access to the cert. If they click allow the web site will appear for the original user.

How can I downgrade 2012 RDP Device CALs to 2008 R2

$

Hi,

I have purchased some RDP Device CALs under Open License.  I need to downgrade them from 2012 version to 2008.

We currently have 45 installed and just purchased another 5.  This time round we could only get 2012 version, but Ingram told us to just call Microsoft and have them downgraded to 2008.     Sound easy.  I've spent 8 hours over 2 days being bounced around from one department to another regarding this.   I must have made 10 calls and given out my details 10 times.

I got close when I contacted the clearing house, and they said yes we can do that for you, only to find out that they only deal with Retail licenses and not Open Licenses and put me back to the main support number.    After speaking to various people there, one of whom told me very rudely that I would need to reinstall the OS and to contact an IT professional, the last person I spoke to said that I could open a  support ticket at the cost of $390.00 or post to technet for free.  Here I am.

I need to downgrade my RDP 2012 licenses to 2008 R2, they where purchased under open licenses without software assurance.   I am in Australia.  How do I do this please.

thanks.

Steve
