Load balancing RDS Licensing for Citrix

$

Hi all,

Currently we are in the middle of upgrading our Citrix farm from 4.5/2003 to 6.5/2008 R2.  In relation to TS Licensing, we are using per device CALs.  The CALs are split between 2 2003 domain controllers that are published to the forest.  Licenses are checked out from both.

In our test environment for 6.5, I set up the same layout.  I have 2 2008 R2 servers with just the RD Licensing role installed and I installed 500 per device licenses on each to start with.  The servers are not published but I have specified in group policy for the 6.5 test environment for the terminal servers to point to the 2 servers.  The plan is shortly before we do go live, add all new licenses, publish them to the forest (because there are other apps that need the licenses beyond Citrix), and retire the old license servers.

Now in the test environment, all licenses are being checked out from the server listed first in the group policy and none from the second server.  I was thinking that they would split between the 2 on their own but I must be mistaken.

So here are my questions...

  1. Is there a way to force balancing now while they are only referenced in the GPO for the test farm?
  2. Once they are published to the forest, does that set it to load balance?
  3. If no load balancing occurs in either situation, does that mean that licenses will not be checked out on the second server until all licenses have been checked out on the first server?
  4. Is there a better implementation route I should have followed for 2008 R2?

Thanks!

Printer Redirection not working

I have just installed my first Windows Server 2008 Terminal Server into our network. Most of my current production servers are all running Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 (including our domain controllers).  I currently have an existing production terminal server running on Windows Server 2003.  Everything works fine on that server.  However, the new 2008 TS is not redirecting the client printers.

My client is running Windows XP SP3 with .NET Framework 3.0 SP2 installed.  The TS configuration is not configured to prevent printing redirection.  The group policies are not configured to prevent printer redirection.  The client's configuration is configured to redirect the printers.  However, when connected to the TS, if I view the "Printers" folder, all I see is the "Microsoft XPS Document Writer".

Client is Windows 8 x64

Servers vary from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2012 with same result

Error message when attempting to log off a session either individually or as a group:

This happens even when connected to the remote system with administrator or domain admin credentials on the remote machine.

RDS over RDweb is not working

Help, I'm stuck.

I have a session based RDP server that is usable via internal and external using RDweb or the straight MSTSC v8.

I know there is a lot of information here so I'll try to provide it all. The problem I'm having is I have another Windows 2012 server setup with Remote Desktop Services (RDS Virtualization) in a personal managed collection type with RD web access and a specific RD user group setup. This all works beautifully internally and have never had an issue with it. The problem is when I try to come in via RD web external (internal works fine). I have both TCP & UDP 3389 setup to be redirected and have the FQDN matching the server name with 3rd part certification. It is secured with a wildcard cert though (but so is my RDP RDweb server and it works fine). I see nothing being blocked on my firewall and have enabled full logging. If I have the VM turned off, and come in through RDweb, it will authenticate me, start the VM, and go through all the checking procedures that RDP 8 goes though, but it will not log me into my VM. Even if I go through the event logs it will say that the session broker successfully assigns me my VM and starts it, but that last leg of getting in does not work. I ran the script again for the RD configuration on the client and checked the logs and it all successfully runs as well.

If I got through the VPN I can RDP in just fine - so I'm not sure what to do. Sorry if my words for mixed around or I didn't use the correct terminology somehwere, I've just been troubleshooting this for hours and all the words are starting to blur together.

Thanks in advance if someone can point me what to look at or where to look at something I'm just not seeing it right now.

Trying to mimic Windows Terminal Server 2003 remote desktop web connection in Server 2008 R2

I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge about Terminal Server ...

I currently have a Windows 2003 Terminal Services server in production.  This server is accessed by hundreds of staff all across the country.  Depending on their location, each user has a slightly different URL to access their appropriate application. For example:

User in location 1 uses: http://terminalserver/app1

User in location 2 uses: http://terminalserver/app2, etc..

When a user visits one of these URLs they are presented with a standard Windows 2003 login prompt.  Once they successfully enter their credentials they are automatically taken to the DOS application.

App1, App2, etc. are further defined on the server with their own unique default.htm file.  Within each default.htm file there is an entry that specify the correct batch file (yes, this is an old DOS app) to run for that particular user.  The syntax of this entry is:

MsRdpClient.SecuredSettings.StartProgram = "e:\folder name\program.bat"

We are attempting to replace this server with a newly built Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 server, running Remote Desktop Services.  I attempted to copy the application folders (app1, app2, etc.) from c:\inetpub\wwwroot on the 2003 server to c:\inetpub\wwwroot on the 2008 server.  I also created entries for each of the DOS batch files in the RemoteApp Manager.

Using this configuration I am able to launch the appropriate application on the 2008 server by specifying it in the URL: https://terminalserver/app1.  However, once I am in the DOS application none of my printers are redirected, therefore I cannot print. If I log directly into the 2008 server using Remote Desktop Connection my printer redirection is just fine.  I checked the default.htm file (that I copied over from the 2003 server) to ensure that printer redirection was enabled, and it appears as though it is by this entry:

   MsRdpClient.AdvancedSettings3.RedirectPrinters   = TRUE

My questions/comments are:

1) Can I re-use the default.htm file (and other files) from my 2003 server on 2008?  If not, is there a file that I can use as an example that is compatible with 2008?

2) Are there any other entries in the default.htm file that I need to modify (that would prevent printers from redirecting)?

3) I don't want to use RDWeb as this method introduces too many steps for a user to launch the application (our users are very computer iliterate, and introducing this level of change would be detrimental).

Any assistance, input, or comments are welcome.  I am a complete novice when it comes to Terminal Server so any feedback would be appreciated.

run UI test without active RD connection

Hi

On my UI I have a recorded macro running on a testmachine (VM) which I access via Remote Desktop. So far so good. Now I would like to let it running even if I disconnect RD. Can I do that?

I found a workaround for Running Tests in Minimized Remote Desktop Windows but I would like to close the connection entirely...

Thanks!

Windows 2003 RDP Fails Randomly on Reboot

I'm not sure if it was a recent Windows update within the past few months or what, but my farm of 100 Windows 2003 Citrix servers have begun to stop accepting RDP connections.  I can go to the console in VMWare and login and uncheck the enable remote desktop and recheck it, and it will work again.  Also, I can reboot the server and RDP may or may not work again.

I even rebuilt our current Windows 2003 template from scratch ran Windows updates.  Still I see the exact same problem. Nothing seems to fix this.  Is there an update or a fix for this? Is anyone else experiencing this?

Is this possible?  If so, how?

Thanks

Restrict RDS Gateway access by IP issues

$

I am having problems restricting access to my RDS Gateway by IP address. I have setup a "Access Client IPv4 Address" Network Policy condition in my existing CAP, setting it equal the public IP of my ISP router. Have verified the IP by going to myipaddress.com and looking in the RDS Gateway logs on the server.

When I remove the Access Client IP condition, I am able to connect fine. When I add it back, I get an Event ID 201, error 23003 in the RDS GW logs.

The client computer in the error event is equal to the IP condition I put in place. Does not make sense.

Does anyone know what I may be doing wrong?

Thanks,

Matt

Needs assistance installing MS Office 2000 on Windows Server 2008 R2. This is an RDS server

I've installed 2 Server 2008 R2 Terminal server (RDS) servers, which unfortunately have to run Office 2000 (mainly Access and Excel).

I guess I need to install it though the control panel with the command d:\setup.exe transforms="C:\Program Files (x86)\ORKTools\ToolBox\Tools\Terminal Server Tools\termsrvr.mst" (Which it has to point to to allow office 2000 to be installed on a terminal server) which doesn't work.

When I try to install Microsoft Office 2000, or insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, I receive the following error message:

Some default settings in Microsoft Office 2000 setup do not work properly on a Windows Terminal Server. To install Office on Terminal Server, you must use the instructions and tools available in your Office 2000 Resource Kit or at http://www.microsoft.com/Office/ORK/.

When you click OK, another error message appears:

Installation ended prematurely because of an error.

When you click OK again, Setup quits.

Unable to set Roaming Profile location VIA GPO - User Logon Failed - Registry setting works

$

I have a really confusing roaming profile issue on my hands...

We utilize roaming profiles and folder redirection in our RDS environment (Citrix, for what its worth). We dont utilize roaming profiles for users logging on via desktops; only when they come in through Citrix. This is a user experience configuration - mostly so that when a user configures their Outlook (or wahtever application...) the way they want - their settings remain.

My predecessor configured our original roaming profiles on the environment. A few days ago, i decided to break a few of our groups up into different roaming profile stores, separated by line of business. Think of the following ou structure as a guide, as the users server they are accessing will determine which GPO and TS location they use...

Core Busines (GPO1 applied)

Line of business 1 (GPO2 applied)

Line of business 2 (GPO3 applied)

Line of business 3 (GPO4 applied)

Essentially i wanted all 3 groups to store their roaming profiles in different locations. The following directory structure applies...

GPO1 = Base Configurations for environment + TS location \\server1\Core-Profiles

GPO2 = TS location \\server1\Line1-Profiles

GPO3 = TS location \\server1\Line2-Profiles

GPO4 = NO TS CONFIGURATION - Utilize local profile

SO NOW THE CONFUSING PART...

I created the GPO's and linked them to the appropriate OUs. When i move a server into one of the sub OUs and attempt to login via Citrix, TS starts to launch and then BOOM - "The User Profile Service Failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded". Reboots do not resolve this issue. I  move the server back to the original OU, with the original base location (\\server1\core-profiles), reboot, and everything works fine.

If i manually go into the registry at this point, and edit the registry key for roaming profiles (hklm/software/policies/microsoft/windows nt/terminals ervices/WFProfileFPath) to my intended location (\\server1\Line2 for example...) everything works without a hitch. The new user profile is created in that directory, and the user is able to login. If i run a GPUpdate /force, the registry key is switched back to the original location, and user is able to login with the profile going to original location. If i move the server to the different OU and reboot again - unsuccessful. I receive the failed logon error. If at this point, with the server in the NEW OU, i attempt to change the registry key to the original file location (where it was working...) - User profile fails to logon successfully.

I have deleted all of the correct ProfileList registry keys, i have deleted all roaming profiles, i have deleted all local user profiles. None of these settings makes any difference. I receive the identical same treatmeant either way. I have duplicated this exact same scenario across 5 different servers in my TS environment.

Really hope someone has an answer to this one...

multiple monitor setup for RDP clients

Hi,

we are trying to connect a windows xp multiple monitor setup to connect to a windows server 2008 server using different screenresolutions.

I know that this is possible with the mstsc /span option, but this spans only between equal screen hights.

my first monitor is in landscape 1280 x 1024 and the other is in portrait 1024 x 1280.

I have found that this is possible in windows 7 and windows server 2008 R2, but can this also be done in a combination of windows xp multiple monitor setup to connect to a windows server 2008?

cheers

Using DFS-R for Roaming Profile Replication

$

Hi,

i have to Datacenters with Terminalservers (XenApp) located. The DCs are well connected (100mbit), so
the users (not sitting a DC location) will be routed to the least loaded Server across both DCs. The Home Folders
will be replicated with DFS-R.

But what about the User Profiles. Is it supported to replicate the User Profiles as well. I thought about to schedule
the Replication in the night. So the user starts an application in DC 1, logf off und later starts application in DC 2 :
result is inconsistent user profile - only the next day it should be synchronized.

Is that possible and supported ?

RDP files signed with rdpsign became corrupted in RDP 8.0

Hi all,

I'm using rdpsign to sign custom RDP files. Everything working fine in Win7 but when I updated RDP client to RDP 8.0 compatible this files became corrupted.

Signing RemoteApp afterwards

Hi

I am trying to sign a RDP after it's creation with the remote app manager, to implement something not available over the GUI (map only particular drives, not every drive into the RDP session). Unfortunately, it does not work:

>rdpsign /sha1 82BF48CF5BE3F8A2275D3C1B7CBA18E501802EB3 remote.rdp
Unable to use the certificate specified for signing. Error Code: 0x80090016
The rdp file could not be signed. Error Code: 0x80090016

Here some thoughts and things I have already tried:

  • RemoteApp Manager signs the RDP with my cert
  • Cert is with the private key in the local machines store (for troubleshooting copied also with private key to local user store and trusted root store)
  • no spaces in thumbprint, no question mark either
  • logged in as administrator
  • CMD as administrator

The error means:

NTE_BAD_KEYSET 0x80090016 Keyset does not exist

see msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dd542646(v=vs.85).aspx

The certificate`s key usage has the following configured:

  • Digital Signature
  • Non-Repudiation
  • Key Encipherment (e0)

Enhanced key usage:

  • Server Authentication (1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.1)
  • Client Authentication (1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.2)
  • Any Purpose (2.5.29.37.0)

Application Policies:

  • [1]Application Certificate Policy:
    Policy Identifier=Server Authentication
  • [2]Application Certificate Policy:
    Policy Identifier=Client Authentication
  • [3]Application Certificate Policy:
    Policy Identifier=Any Purpose

So the cert should be right I guess

Any ideas?

Thanks for your support

Where is the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool in Server 2012 ?

Where is the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool in Server 2012 ?

This is an MMC snap-in found on earlier servers, even if RDS is not installed.  In Server 2012, even if the Remote Desktop Session Host role is installed, this tool is still not available.

I'm looking for the Server 2012 tool to adjust security settings like TLS authentication, High encryption level, choice of TLS certificate, NLA, etc.

Thanks!

WTSVirtualChannelOpen fails on Windows Server 2012, identical code works fine on Windows Server 2008 etc.

$

We try to open two Virtual Channels with the same name on a Windows Server 2012 with two WTSVirtualChannelOpen(WTS_CURRENT_SERVER, WTS_CURRENT_SESSION, "name") calls from within a single process.

While the first call succeeds, the second call always hangs for 10 seconds and returns NULL. Afterwards called GetLastError returns 0x80004005 (unspecified error).

This problem only happens on Server 2012, the same code works without problems on Server 2003 and 2008, using the same client.

Firewall is disabled (personal and domain).

•Did anything change between Server 2008 and Server 2012 that would cause such an "unspecified error"?
•Is there any way to get more detailed information on the cause of the error (e.g. activate logging on WTS... functionality)?
Any answers are appreciated ...

Andreas
