Hi there,

Is there any documentation on how to manually install RDS on Windows Server 2012 R2 without using the new standard deployment wizard  scenario? I would like to manually configure and install RDS Farm components but still be able to view the overall deployment.

thanks

RDS 2012 R2 Connection broker in HA mode SQL mirroring issue

$

Hi,

I have an issue where our two brokers will not connect to the failover database when the database fails over.

Our setup:

Database - 2 x SQL 2012 Standard with the RDCB database mirrored in high safety with automatic failover mode.

Brokers/Web gateways - 2 x server duel role servers in different subnets. They're configured in HA mode

I won't include the session hosts as it's out of scope for this issue.

So the RD database connection string has been set to:

DatabaseConnectionString : DRIVER=SQL Server Native Client 11.0;SERVER=server2\instance2,5555;Failover_Partner=server1\instance1,5555;Trusted_Connection=Yes;APP=Remote Desktop Services Connection Broker;Database=RDCB

So when this was first set, the DB was failed over and it worked. It was then failed back to the correct principal but now when failed over to the Failover_Partner it will not connect.

I've confirmed the SQL permissions and custom port aren't an issue.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Error : Remote Desktop Cant connect to the remote computer for one of these reason

recently our security team advised us to enable NLA on remote desktop for all the server and set the encryption level to FIPS Compliant.

after i made these changes on the server i am not able take remote from my client machine, windows 7, windows 8.1 and also from windows 2008 r2 server. getting the following below error :-

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:
1) Remote access to the server is not enabled
2) The remote computer is turned off
3) The remote computer is not available on the network

Make sure the remote computer is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i have checked my RDP client version and all are supported with NLA but still i am not able to remote in. windows firewall is disabled completely at server side.

if i disable NLA at server end, i am able to remote in successfully, but i wanted the NLA to be available for security reason.

any guidance will be really helpful on this.

Windows 8 and RD gateway not working!

$

I have Windows server 2008 (not R2) server running RD gateway and now finding that any client that has upgraded to windows 8 can longer connect via the RD Gateway server.  We are using domain\username to log in as we have always done with windows 7 RDP client (which just worked).  After reading a number of posts where certain "fixes" or "workarounds" have worked sadly none of these appear to apply to our setup.

I have made sure that ignore client certificates is set to ignore and restarted IIS, I have chacked the server logs and there are no failed logon events, in fact the authentication succeeds but the session isn't created.

Running out of ideas now...any help?

Is it supported to publish remote app from the Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 RDS Session host using Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS Session Collection? Also using Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS gateway etc?

I know this is working, but is this also supported scenario?

RDWeb setup for our office

Hi All,

We have the following hardware for our RD Web solution:

1 Server – RD Gateway, RD Licensing, RD Web Access, RD Connection Broker

1 Server – RD Session Host 1

1 Server – RD Session Host 2

Our environment consists of the following:

1 Windows Server 2012 R2 domain controller at the main office, 4 additional 2003 R2 servers scattered throughout our 4 remote offices. Domain functional level of 2003.

Although I have found some really good walkthroughs on the internet that have helped me for the most part in setting up an RD farm,  I can’t seem to find definitive answers to my questions. My questions are mainly with the connection broker, load balancing and high availability.

I am hoping that someone could help me find the holy grail of RD web! Please avoid responding with links to technet articles as I have read several of them already. What I am instead looking for is personal knowledge and experience, thank you!

  • Will high availability work with just one connection broker or do we need to purchase an additional server to use as a connection broker?
  • Will my ONE connection broker automatically roll a client’s connection over to RD session host 2 in the event that RD session host 1 gets powered off?
  • What exactly does high availability do? My interpretation of it from a user’s perspective is, they log on from the comfort of their living room, check their email then open and edit their word document. They decide to go jump in the shower so they close everything out without logging off. High availability now kicks in and keeps track of what the user was doing with their session when they closed and powered off their computer. User returns to their computer, powers it on and logs back intohttps://remote.company.com/rdweb to find that their email and word document that they were editing is still open and running just like they left it. This all makes if the users are using VDIs. However, we are only using remote apps at the moment. Assuming that my interpretation of HA is correct, how does it benefit users who are using remote apps?
  • Can I deliver both VDI and remote apps to my users with my existing hardware?
  • Does load balancing work right "out the box" or is there some configuration required?
  • When configuring high availability mode, I am prompted for the DB connection string, database store, and DNS round robin name. This of course is asking for all of the SQL input information necessary to enable HA. I have installed and configured SQL Express 2012 SP1 with the native client beautifully onto the broker server. The broker server’s computer account is part of a security group that has dbcreator rights to SQL. Port 1433 is open on the local firewall and it has been configured in SQL configuration manager IP settings. But for some oddball reason, I get “could not create the database” (Event ID: 32776) when attempting to proceed with the HA configuration. Could this be because:
  1.      The SQL instance is on the connection broker itself?
  2.      My farm needs to have more than one broker server?

Any personal experience and words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated, thank you for your time!

How many CALs do i need? Server 2012 - Exchange 2013 - RDP

$

Hi,

(I apologize for the grammar and spelling mistakes, but im confident in the fact that the text is understandable. If not, please let me know. I have used UK English for spelling.)

I did some research and read the following:

(unable to post links, my email needs to be 'verified')

And some MS pages regarding the CALs for Windows 2008 R2 (don't ask why).

This is basically what i want to do:

OS:                        Windows 2012 R2, possibly 2x because of the RDS role.
Roles Server1:  Active Directory and Exchange 2013
Roles Server2: File server and RDS
Users:                 20
PC’s:                    Approx. 15. Not sure about the exact numbers, but i am sure that there are more users than client pc’s.
Users RDP:        Starting with 10 but eventually every user will be using RDP, so it might be also 20. The 10 we start with will not have the ability of logging into a client PC but RDP only.
MS Software:    Outlook 2010 or 2013, depends on the support by MS.

We are going to start with an AD with a home folder, roaming profiles and an email account. If everything go’s whell, we plan to start letting users connect tot heir workspace via RDP.

I came to the following conclusion and need your input on this:

  • 20 User CALs, As far as i know, I need 1 user cal for an AD account and a RDP cal forone RDP account. Without a User CAL, i cant issue a RDP user cal, is this correct?
  • 20 RDP User CALs, does this mean that all my users can log into a RDS session via any client, even their own private pc?
  • No Device calls, redundant?
  • 20 Exchange CALs, I am not sure about this one, the second link i found only mentions acces via web and mobile. I would also like to know if the Exchange CAL is per user or email. If it’s per user, then wat do i do with an email that is meant for multiple users?
  • 2 Server CALs, This is just buying 2012R2 isnt it? Does this also allow me to use one physically and the other as a VM in the physical one? Just asking, im not really going to use a VM.

Hope you guys can help me out on this one, i didn’t expect the CALs would bet his complicated.

RD Virtualization Host not communicating with Broker

Windows 2012 R2 environment with 2 RD Virtualization Hosts and 1 Connection Broker.    Both hosts were functioning correctly however I am seeing this error in the event log of one of my hosts now and I cannot deploy VDI collections to this host (the other one is fine):

-Remote Desktop Virtualization Host could not connect to the WMI provider on the Remote Desktop Connection Broker server.

I have tried removing this RD Virtualization Host from the RDS Deployment and adding it back but that did not work.

Any ideas?

Remote Desktop Connection Broker Client failed to redirect the user - Error: Null

Hello,

I have a remote desktop services farm built on Windows Server 2012 R2.

I have two Connection brokers in a HA setup, a single server with the web/gateway roles installed and two session hosts in a single session collection.

The farm has been working well up until I ran the Set-RDWorkspace command to change the name from the default to the name of our organisation.

The web and gateway seem to function fine but when I try and connect to the session collection I get the following error "This computer can't connect to the remote computer.

I have tested network connectivity between both session hosts and connection brokers, all seems okay.

In the "TerminalServices-SessionBroker-Client" logs in Event viewer the following error message is generated when a logon is attempted: "Remote Desktop Connection Broker Client failed to redirect the user - Error: Null".

I am unsure if this issue is related to the "Set-RDWorkspace" command or that was just a coincidence

Thanks

I have a AD DC which also hosts the RDS role (2008R2) and has installed an application for remote users. I configured the RDS as:

  • RD Session Host Server: Host's FQDN, port 3389, Access to Unlisted programms: No
  • RD Gateway: Server's public IP, Logon method: NTLM, Use the same credentials for both RD Gateway and Session Host authentication, Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses: yes
  • Digital Signature: No
  • Common RDP Settings: Share Clipboard, Allow font smoothing, Colors 32bit
  • Custom RDP Settings: authentication level:i:2

Now here is what I am experiencing. If I run the .rdp file inside the intranet after succesful logon, the application starts up fine. If I try from outside (plain simple internet, no VPN) I get to the logon screen, I enter my domain credentials, I get to a status "Starting" and finally getting the following error message:

RemoteApp Disconnected: Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because the Remote Desktop Gateway Server is temporarily unavailable.

Obviously there is something going on with the RD Gateway service. I checked under services to see if there is an entry of it and started but couldnt locate it. At the moment I am stuck and would appreciate some help to troubleshoot further.

FYI regular remote desktop on the server works fine, the remote users group is OK as they can connect with remote desktop fine. Remote hosts run either windows 7SP1 or 8.1 fully updated.

Cannot see local drives in remote desktop

I am using RD to connect from a 2012 server to another 2012 server. I have configured RD to show remote drives from my local 2012 server. When i RD into the remote 2012 server i cannot see my local drives. The local drives show up fine if i RD into a 2003 or even some other 2012 servers. Is there a security setting in 2012 that prevents local drives from showing up when you rd into them? If not do you have any idea how i can resolve this issue so i can see my local drives on the machine I RD into?

Thanks for your help

Unable to RDP to Session Host when added to Session Collection

Setup is as follows

Server 1 - Server 2012 R2  Session Host, Connection Broker, Web Access, Licensing

Server 2 - Server 2012 R2  Session Host

I want to be able to provide load balancing for this environment however whenever i try to add server 1 into the session collection it allows me to but then if i log off i cant log back in using RDP unless i use the switch mstsc.exe /admin and i get the following error message -

"The remote computer server 1 that you are trying to connect to is redirecting you to another remote computer named server 2. Remote Desktop Connection cannot verify that the computers belong to the same RD session host server farm. You must use the farm name not the computer name when you connect."

If i remove the server from the session collection it will then allow me to RDP back into the server and manage it as normal

2012 R2 Hyper-V HOST with virtualized 2008 R2 SP1 RDSH - Remote FX Capable?

$

This article goes over RemoteFX and RDSH for 2008 R2 SP1, but nothing is discussed in regards to 2012 R2 Hyper-V HOSTs for the virtualized RDSH server.

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2011/03/25/q-amp-a-microsoft-remotefx-and-remote-desktop-session-host-servers.aspx

My goal is to use a 2012 R2 Hyper-V HOST server to provide RemoteFX vGPU performance to a 2008 R2 SP1 RDSH server. Is this possible? If not, are there any solutions that can provide graphics performance benefits to an RDSH server? If so, are there limitations? What are the benefits?

RDS 2012 R2 VDI Pooled VMs AVHD Bloat

Good Morning,

I have an issue in a proof of concept scenario where my VDI Pooled VMs when left in an idle state start rapidly increasing in disk space. Is there a log I can view that can determine what is causing the bloat ?

We have limited storage space on CSV volume for the Proof Of Concept. I have been able to work the round the issue by using the Save State feature ideally I would prefer the VMs left in a running state.

Overview of the environment -

1 Broker

1 Web

1 Gateway

1 Licensing

1 RDS Virtualisation Host (VDI Pool storage via ISCSI Storage (Dedicated) for PoC)

VDI Pool Size - 50

VDI Pool Build

Windows 7 Enterprise

Office 2010

Normal Browser Plugins (Java \ Flash \ Shockwave)

Adobe CS 6

Thanks in advance

Hi all!

I have Terminal Farm: 3 servers - Remote desktop session host 2012 R2(RDSH) and 2 servers - Remote Desktop Connection Broker(RDCB)
I try connect to this farm from Windows XP SP3 with KB WindowsXP-KB969084
and I get error
‘The connection has been terminated because an unexpected server authentication certificate was received from the remote computer.’
All certificate from connection broker I have already installed on XP machine.
I try to connect to one of the three servers RDSH directly, and connect successfull.
I try to connect to one of the two servers RDCB directly, and get same error
'The connection has been terminated because an unexpected server authentication certificate was received from the remote computer.’
I try connect to this farm(or directly to RDSH) from Windows 7/8/8.1 and haven't issues, all work perfectly!

It is possible connect to Farm with balancing by RDCB from Windows XP?

Where is the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool in Server 2012 ?

Where is the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool in Server 2012 ?

This is an MMC snap-in found on earlier servers, even if RDS is not installed.  In Server 2012, even if the Remote Desktop Session Host role is installed, this tool is still not available.

I'm looking for the Server 2012 tool to adjust security settings like TLS authentication, High encryption level, choice of TLS certificate, NLA, etc.

Thanks!

Dear forum,

Hopefully you could help me solve a quite strange situation. I run and support a Windows Server 2008R2 Terminal Server with a mix of Fat and Thin clients. Lately i have noticed a huge performance difference between the Fat and Thin clients though both work on the Terminal server.

Could it be that the hardware on a Thin or even Fat client determines the performance on a Terminal Server. If so is it possible to block all local resource request regarding CPU or RAM so all the action will be performed on the server instead of on the Thin/Fat client and with it having the same performance across the Thin and Fat clients.

Thanks in advance,

Dwayne Jurcka
