Windows Server 2012 Essentials - Remote Desktop Services

$

0

Hi Experts,

I was hoping someone would be able to provide me with some guidance.

We have recently purchased Windows Server 2012 Essentials as well as 5 RDP user CALS.

We do not have a domain or any other servers. We only require 5 people from various locations to be able to remotely log into the server and work on a program that is installed on it.

However, the setup and configuration of the Remote Desktop Services did not go as planned. After many attempts and various configuration settings, it still doesn't work.

What I am lead to believe is that the Essentials version of Server 2012 doesn't support being the RDP Gateway and License Server and Host. However, nowhere can I confirm this, I have searched many forums where people are experiencing the same problems, but nowhere can I find answers.

If there is anyone out there that might be able to shed some light and maybe point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and Regards,

Wynand.

Multi monitor issues with resolution(?)

$

At a customer I have got a really strange and annoying problem. The customer has got a Hyper-V VM with 2012 R2 Server as a RDS server aka Terminal Server.

One user has got issues with his multi monitor setup. The connection settings seems to be OK. It is set to full screen and the checkbox for the multi monitor configuration is enabled. Theoretically this works because the user sees a correct setup with one primary display and one secondary display. The settings itself are correct.

1. Primary display: 1680*1050
2. Secondary display: 27" 1920*1080

The display settings on the client are nearly the same except that the numbers of the two monitors are different (those numbers you get when you click identify at the resolution change window). On the Windows 7 client the primary display number 2 and the 27" has got the number 1. On the Terminal Server the primary display has got the number 1 and the 27" display has got the number 2. But the corresponding resolution at the display number is correct.

Now the problem. Everything seems fine, the desktop is expended. But when the user is "touching" the top or bottom edge of the screen the display is scrolling (in full screen) -  like in a 3D game scrolling over a map. The user told me that both screens are scrolling equally at the same time. I am not sure but the user told me that if he is going to the bottom the CLIENT task bar appears. Changing the task bar of the client to fixed the user told me that the task bar will always show up. - Strange that CTRL + ALT + BREAK does not work.

I tried to press CTRL + ALT + BREAK twice, changing the resolution to a fixed value and back to full screen again, changing the primary display to the new 27" monitor, adding smart sizing:i:1 to rdp file and upgrading the Intel HD 4600 laptop graphic drivers (must be downloaded from Lenovo :/). NOTHING helped :(.
But this strange behavior does not exist on the client. Opening two programs (simple notepad e.g.) on each display and maximize them and moving the mouse the screen borders won't show this problem. It only exist on the remote session.

Now the "funny" part. If I connect with Team Viewer to the client the problem disappears as long as I am connected. If I disconnect the problem shows up again.

A Way to publish a RemoteApp as a % percentage of Client Desktop?

$

We are in the process of migrating from a W2k3 with Citrix PS 4.5 environment to a W2k12R2 RDS environment with RemoteApps. The most important remoteapp is written in a way that new windows open when you click on items. On our new RDS environment, many times these Windows are opening behind other windows and they are in effect hidden from the end user.

In the Citrix environment, this application was published as a % percentage of Client Desktop and I believe this was done because of this problem. Is there a way using a third party tool or otherwise to publish my RDS Remote app as a % of Client Desktop or maybe not make it seamless?

Thank you,

SJ

2012 R2 RDS Temporary Profile issue

$

I have set up a standard 3 node 2012 R2 RDS for testing. All virtualized on VMware ESXi 5.0. I have a connection Broker, session host, and web access server. I have published several applications and I can access them without a problem. Here is my issue:

When I try to log on to my session host server either locally or thru RDP, I am always logged in with a Temporary profile. It does not mater what user account I use. Even logging on locally as the administrator I get a temporary profile.

All windows updates are installed and current.

I have removed the server from the domain, deleted the account, and rejoined it to the domain.

I have deleted all .bak registry entries from here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

There is a hotfix here for a similar issue on 2012 but it does not apply to 2012 R2

The only event viewer errors are:

1515 (Windows has backed up this user profile. Windows will automatically try to use the backup profile the next time this user logs on.)

1511 (Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.)

Any suggestions to resolve would be greatly appreciated.

Nolonger able to directly Remote into DC

Hello   we recently switched ISPs.  Previously we were using our own hardware to create an ipsec tunnel\vpn between the locations, but the new ISP's modem does that for us now. The problem is after the switch I can nolonger remote into the domain controller at one of the report sites.  I can log into any other machine there, just not that one directly.   If I really want to get in I have to first remote into a pc at that office and remote into the DC from there.  OR  I can have some there at that office start a VPN\RRAS session from that server to another one in my office and then I can get in directly. Any ideas on how to remove that extra step?   I don't know why I can get into everything except that server.  I know switch ISPs happened about the same time, but I'm doubtly they are the problem since I can get into every other device remotely.

"Remote Resources" doesnt load - OSX RDP App v 8.0.9

$

Hey All,

Running into a curious issue that I've been trying to fix on and off, related specifically to using "Remote Resources" from the RDP App version 8.0.9 on OSX only.

When I type in the (proper) URL for my RDWeb Server, it hangs and never displays any remote resources. What is more alarming however, is the IIS traffic server side shows it continually retrying and failing without ever stopping. The only way to get it to"stop" is to go back in and blank out the Remote Resources fields, and press refresh. I've been able to eat up a significant amount of CPU on my RDWeb servers by just getting 5-10 Mac's trying to connect at the same time, and let it run for 5-10 minutes, it just never stops retrying.

The server side logs look like this:

...and on and on, repeating in an endless loop until I manually blank the details within "Remote Resources" on the Mac.

My first thought was to chase down the 401.2 error, which leads me to believe the Client and Server did not support a common authentication scheme? We do currenlty do some basic server hardening via GPO - disabling RC4 and SSLv2, as this server is intended to be publically available when we go live. However, reverting this stuff back to "stock", and rebooting, has not alleviated the issue, or change the IIS log output. My research on the various 401.1 errors hasn't gotten me anywhere either, unfortunately.

The interesting thing is, using Windows 7, 8, 8.1 is fine. Using Android's RDP app, as well as IOS RDP App, I can use the "Remote Resources" function just fine. We are using 100% Public trusted CA certs, and everything "else" seems to work with the exception of "Remote Resources" on OSX specifically.

On OSX, I can also use Safari, or Firefox and load the Remote Desktop Web Access page, and launch an app successfully (Minus the still existing RD Gateway issue, which requires the .RDP file be manually edited first to work through an RD Gateway on OSX, it still ignores these settings as of 8.0.9). Additionally, within Safari or Firefox, I can visit the "/feed/webfeed.aspx" url and login, to where it will download the RSS feed as a file, so it appears to "function" at least through the browser to some extent. (it is my understanding that all the Remote Resources portion should be doing is downloading the RSS feed and populating it within the RDS app for convenience?)

Has anyone seen this before? Surely I can't be the only one....? Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions, I can provide additional details or clarification if needed.

Brother ADS-2000 Scanner will not scan on RDS 2012 Server

We have a Brother ADS-2000 Scanner that works great on a local Windows 7 PC. We have configured RemoteFX with our 2012 RDS server and the device is seen and detected in the terminal server session. The problem is when we try to scan from the RDS session we receive an error stating that the device is not connected. (See Below)

When we try to scan from the Paint application we get:

"Unable to retrieve picture from device. verify the device is properly connected and try again."

We've updated the drivers on the local machine and like I said the scanner is seen in the Remote session, it just won't scan? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Application is losing authentication to IIS server

$

We have a Server 2008 R2 terminal server with an application on it that is losing it's authentication to our IIS server. Basically you log in to the application and when you begin to work in it, it tells you it has lost it's connection to the server. At that point, you have to close and reopen the program and it will work again for a while until the same issue occurs. What is weird though is that if we open up Internet Explorer on the server and then launch the application, the problem doesn't occur. So there seems to be some sort of Internet Explorer setting that is getting applied that is allowing the authentication to work.

The application in IIS is using Windows Authentication. Has anyone ever ran in to an issue like this before?

Hi Folks,
Searching information for applications ClickOnce, in RDS 2012 R2, in Remote Desktop Services Blog, I read these applications can't published as RemoteApp programs directly, they can now be installed and run from their hosting website through a web browser such as Internet Explorer published as a RemoteApp program.

Exist another form in the solve is the challenge?

I can solve these challenge using RDS combined with App-v.

Suggestions?

Thanks a lot!

Network Wide Monitoring Solution

We are looking at various alternatives/vendors for desktop virtualization and wonder what we could use to monitor the physical desktops to determine what applications are being used and how much CPU and memory is being used. This information would help us determine who needs a virtual desktop or who can get by with virtual apps. We have SCCM and are also about to implement Spiceworks. Would either of these help?

Thanks

User profile vs Remote Desktop Services Profile

On a Windows 2008 R2 Domain Controller, if you open properties of an user account, you'd see

a Profile Tab as well as Remote Desktop Services Profile Tab.

I found this very confusing, can any one tell be the key difference between those 2?

If I don't specify Remote Desktop Services Profile path, when I logon to Remote Desktop Server, it seems take user's

romaing profile.

Anyway, please advice.

Thank you.

self assigned or trusted certificate for no Gateway scenario

$

hi,

1.  RDS server 2012 R2 is deployed and I can access published app byhttps://servername/rdweb

2.  RD Gateway will be never used (only LAN connections)

3. Would self signed certificate prevent to achieve THE GOAL:

need to publish an app by providing shortcut on user desktop in completely transparent for user manner.

There is no problem with purchasing a Trusted certificate. I thought that trusted will be necessary (less hassle) if RD Gateway is in place. But still have a feeling that even for publishing a shortcut there will be some pop up after user click on an icon if Self Assigned will be present.

Please clarify.

Thanks.

Remote Desktop Services / Sessions on Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials

$

Hello all,

I recently installed the trial version of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials to see how it will work as a replacement of the current Windows 2003 Server in a small office (three employees). Every user is using the current service as a terminal server. The problem is that Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials appears to allow only two concurrent RDP sessions or better two sessions in total. Even if a user is working directly on the server it will disconnect one of the RDP sessions.

Windows 2012 R2 Standard would be overkill for this scenario / business setup. As Windows 2012 Server R2 Essentials is not working with CAL's, is there any other way to allow one or two additional RDP sessions?

What would be the best licencing model in this scenario?

Feedback more than appreciated. Thank you very much!

Error publishing RemoteApp

Hi All,

I´m configuring RDS on Windows 2012R2. I have two production RDS Servers and I installed one Broker and Gateway Server and two session Hosts. After creating a collection with two hosts I wanted to add a RemoteApp. On host1 no problem at all, but on host2 I receive following error:

Server.local is not available on the Network. Verify that the Server is available on the Network or remove the Server from the collection.

It´s not possible to publish a RemoteApp on that host. Does anyone has an idea?

Thanks.

Dirk

Hello Guys,

In order to solve another problem I'm having, I wish to add a RemoteApp using Powershell. I have created a remote desktop session Deployment using the Server Manager, and adding RemoteApps there works perfectly. However, when I want to use Powershell to add a RemoteApp, it gives me the following error message:

New-RemoteApp : A Remote Desktop Services deployment does not exist on sv-xxx-rds03.xxxx.infra. This operation can be
performed after creating a deployment. For information about creating a deployment, run "Get-Help Set-VDIDeployment" o

When I want to create a new SessionDeployment I get the following:

At line:1 char:1+ New-SessionDeployment+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+ CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (:) [Write-Error], WriteErrorException+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.WriteErrorException,New-SessionDeployment

Anyone any idea how I can make my server recognize the fact that he already has a deployment and that he's a member of that deployment?

How to undo the automatically start program to when a user logs on

I have followed this following directions (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc736643%28v=ws.10%29.aspx#BKMK_TSC) :

"Using Terminal Services Configuration

    • Open Terminal Services Configuration.
    • In the console tree, click Connections.
    • In the details pane, right-click the connection for which you want to specify an initial program, and then clickProperties.
    • On the Environment tab, under Initial program, selectStart the following program when the user logs on. This option allows you to configure an initial program for the connection.

      • If you select Do not allow an initial program to be launched. Always show desktop, then Terminal Services cannot start a specified initial program automatically when a client connects to a terminal server. Instead, the user must start programs by using the default desktop that is displayed during the Terminal Services session.
    • If you select Run initial program specified by user profile and Remote Desktop Connection or Terminal Services client, then the program that is specified in the default user profile and in Remote Desktop Connection or the Terminal Services client will run when the client connects to the terminal server.
  1. If you selected Start the following program when the user logs on, inProgram path and file name, type the path and file name of the program that you want to start when the user logs on to the terminal server.
  2. In Start in, type the working directory path for the program, and then clickOK."
  3. the problem is that now all of the server users get the specific program automatically starts when logged on and i cant undo it because i cant get to the desktop or to the "tscc.msc"

is there a way to fix it?

Separation of Windows 2008, 2012 and 2012r2 Roaming profiles.

    Hi

Before I arrived the setup was as follows. There was windows 2008 and windows 2012 RDS servers with the remote desktop services profile and the profile each  going to a separate share. This set-up was working fine until the server that hosted the two shares died.

The shares were recreated on a new server, the data copied across and the both of the profile settings were updated.

Since then the windows 2012 profiles have not worked and come up with a message saying that it can no longer access the server copy, using a local copy and that the changes can not be saved.

I have done some research into this issue and have found

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2887239/en-gb

When I looked at the profiles they have .v2 which I take it are the windows 2008 version and not the .v3 which is the windows 2012 version.

Now I'm almost ready to apply the hotfix and follow the document above.

    The question is do I.

    A) just apply the hotfix to the windows 2012 terminal servers.

    B) Apply the hotfix just to where the terminal profiles are being stored, on a windows 2008 server

    C) apply the hotfix to both the windows 2012 terminal servers and the place where they are being stored.

The document is not clear on what should be done.

We are due to install another terminal server but this will be windows 2012r2.

I take it that we just install this hotfix on either the right one to a,b or c to keep the .v4 profile seperate.

    Cheers

    Jason

Terminal Server profiles path between Server 2008

My existing Citrix farm has published desktops on Server 2008 x86 SP1, and the new farm I'm building is based on Server 2008 R2 x64. I can't get the x64 servers to use the same path as the x86 servers, despite having the same GPO's.

Both have the same GPO linked: under Computer Configuration/Policies/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Remote Desktop Session Host/Profiles, the path is set to \\server\share\%username%.

When a user who doesn't have a profile logs in to a Server 2008 x86 server, after they log out their profile is uploaded to the share as \\server\share\username.V2. When a user logs into Server 2008 R2, it doesn't pull their username.V2 profile and instead creates a new one as \\server\share\username\username.domain.V2.

Please help me get the x64 R2 servers to use the existing TS profiles.
