Unable to connect to 2012 R2 using RDC inside a C#/WPF application

I wrote a C#/WPF app that can remotely connect to a Windows 7 (or prior) and  2008 R2 (or prior). It cannot connect to Windows 8 or 2012 R2 server though.

Basically, the application is a "Microsoft RDP Client Control - version 8" (Pulled from the Tool Box) inside a Windows form user control, but the generated code writes " private AxMSTSCLib.AxMsRdpClient7 rdc;" Shouldn't it be " private AxMSTSCLib.AxMsRdpClient8 rdc;" But the latter doesn't appear as an option in the list (From Intellisense)

I searched the web on updating the MSTSCLib dll or any other related but couldn't find any answers

NOTE: The OS is up to date. It is possible to connect to 2012R2 server using the RDC in the "Accessories" tab.

RDS 2012 - HTTP & UDP Gateway Connections Reset

$

Hi

I have a single Windows 2012 R2 RDS server, which acts as all the RDS roles, including RD Gateway.

I also have an Windows 2012 R2 IISARR server setup to reverse proxy 443 connections to the server, and have port 3391 open on our firewall to allow UDP connections.

In short, if I connect using an RDP 8 client, I get three connections as expected. One HTTP and two UDP. If I connect using an RDP 7 client, I get one RPC-HTTP connection, again as expected.

The problem is that whereas the RPC-HTTP connection is stable, the HTTP & UDP connections disconnect every 2-5 minutes. The client screen goes black and a Reconnect Attempt 1/20 windows is displayed. Each time though the connection re-establishes itself and the session is not reset.

In the gateway manager, monitoring page, you can witness these connections disconnecting and re-connecting. It's very puzzling. The event logs acknowledge the disconnect, stating reason 0.

On the Windows 8 clients, I've tried the recent hotfix 2897602 and tried turning off Windows Location Services. But that doesn't help.

I've read a lot about UDP and RDP8, with some saying it doesn't work properly and that you should turn it off. However, I have it turned on as I was having problems scrolling PDF files in the remote session, which the UDP connections fixed.

Any help with this would be much appreciated. I've done so much research and spent so much time on it...

Thanks

Andrew

[Forum FAQ] Troubleshoot the error “The Remote Desktop Session Host server is in Per User licensing mode and No Redirector Mode”

$

Symptom

RD License server is a key component of RDS. It licenses users to access RDS servers.

After purchase the required RDS CALs, we need to activate the RDS License server and install the purchased RDS CALs. However, during the installation or after installation, we may face errors about RDS License.

In most cases, the following error may occur.

Error:

The Remote Desktop Session Host server is in Per User licensing mode and No Redirector Mode, but license server "Server name" does not have any installed licenses with the following attributes:

Product version: Windows Server 2012

Licensing mode: Per User

License type: RDS CALs

Troubleshooting

1. Check whether the RD License Configuration is configured properly and there are no Warnings in the Event.

2. The License Server should be part of 'RD Server License' group in Active Directory Domain Services.

3. Check if the Licensing Mode is correct.

- To change the Licensing Mode we can use RD Licensing diagnose, PowerShell cmdlet and Group Policy.

Via PowerShell cmdlet:

To change the licensing mode on RDSH/RDVH:

$obj = get-wmiobject -namespace "Root/CIMV2/TerminalServices" Win32_TerminalServiceSetting

$obj.ChangeMode(value)

# Value can be 2 - per Device, 4 - Per user

Via Group Policy

Path: Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Remote Desktop Services -> Remote Desktop Session Host -> Licensing

Use the specified RD license servers = FQDN of server name

Set the Remote Desktop licensing mode =Per User

However, if issue persists, please provide detailed information and post the question in the

Windows 2012 R2 optional NLA

im running windows 2012 R2 session host farm and i want to take advantage of NLA for all my clients.

Nevertheless, i have legacy clients that still need to connect without NLA

As far as i can see, the only way to enable NLA on Windows 2012 R2 is to enforce NLA.

Is there  any option to configure my Windows 2012 R2 Session farm so that it accept NLA if supported by the client and to allow also normal not NLA connections from the other legacy clients?

Error publishing RemoteApp

Hi All,

I´m configuring RDS on Windows 2012R2. I have two production RDS Servers and I installed one Broker and Gateway Server and two session Hosts. After creating a collection with two hosts I wanted to add a RemoteApp. On host1 no problem at all, but on host2 I receive following error:

Server.local is not available on the Network. Verify that the Server is available on the Network or remove the Server from the collection.

It´s not possible to publish a RemoteApp on that host. Does anyone has an idea?

Thanks.

Dirk

BSOD on Session Hosts 2012 R2 after update KB 2959626

Hello!

We are using Session Hosts on Windows server 2012 R2 with Connection Brokers, Web Access servers etc. on separate servers.

We experienced the following issue: a client has active connection to RemoteApp; after losing network connection client (quite often) cannot reconnect to his session:"starting remoteapp" window is hanging and there is a black screen in "show details". Our helpdesk personnel have to logoff user's session.

We have tried many things to solve this issue and at last update KB 2959626 helped us. But (how often there is a "but"!) after this update servers have begun to crush (1-2 times a week, also in working hours) with BSOD (Bug Check 0xAB: SESSION_HAS_VALID_POOL_ON_EXIT).

Has anybody dealt with problems after this update? Are there any workarounds?

Any help would be appreciated.

SERVER CONFIGURATION - PROBLEM SETTING UP LICENSE SERVER

I HAVE SETUP WINDOWS SERVER 2012 IN A PC AND MADE IT MEMBER OF THE DOMAIN. I HAVE INSTALLED RD LICENSE SERVER AND RD GATEWAY SERVER TO THE SAME SERVER. I ALSO CONFIGURED THE LICENSING MODE TO 'PER USER' AND HAVE INSTALLED USER CAL (FOR 50 USERS). STILL IT DISPLAYS A MESSAGE ON STARTUP THAT REMOTE DESKTOP LICENSING MODE IS NOT CONFIGURED.

IS THIS COULD BE AN ISSUE OF CERTIFICATES OR TRUSTS?

User Profile Disks require SMB 3.0?

Hi all,

I have some netapp space available for User profile disks, the netapp does not support SMB 3.0 and when I try and apply the setting i get an RPC error:

0x800706BA

Similar to this thread here which suggested SMB3 was required.

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/5a4e6fb8-ad10-4ac1-b3ac-55d414b3fb17/got-rpc-server-is-unavailable-error-when-configuring-user-profile-disk-to-use-a-samba-share?forum=winserverTS

So would like clarification, is SMB 3.0 a requirement?

I have managed to setup a file share on a windows 2012r2 box on storage which does not support SMB3.0 and it works... I don't know if windows is doing something funky in the back end to make it work though.

Thanks

Run specific published app in one collection using different credentials

Hi,

I have a collection of published apps using rdweb with apps accessed by and run by a user in a group. I was wondering how i can allow one of the apps in the users rdweb to be launched using alternate credentials.

I.e. i log on as userA. I get my list of allowed apps in RDWeb. Among those apps is an app, let's call it AppX. I want that app to be launched using credentials of a user account named userB.

I know this is possible using citrix xenapp on server 2008 R2. Can it be done on native RDS 2012 R2 (no citrix)?

I'm using Window Server 2012, and have purchase Windows Server 2012 RDS User CAL x 10, after install the RDS CAL license to RD Licensing Manager, it can show Total licenses is 10 & Available is 10 (I think its complete install the license). When we use remote desktop to login to server, it still only accept 2 con-current user to login. What am I missing?

The procedure for install the "Remote Desktop Service" that only "Remote Desktop Licensing", the other "Remote Desktop Connection Broker", "Remote Desktop Gateway", Remote Desktop Session Host", "Remote Desktop Virtualization Host", & "Remote Desktop Web Access" haven't installed. Does need install it? Thanks Help.

Printers of other users visible and show up multiple times under the control panel

$

Hello,

I currently have a very interesting problem:

Some (not all) printers show up multiple times on every user session on the specific terminal server. This behavior show up on both of the 2 servers. Also the printer only shows up multiple times under the control panel, but not in the printer dialog.

The users are not part of either printer operators, Administrator or Power Users.

The servers are Windows Server 2012.

I cannot find a reason for this after some hours with my friend Google.

Does someone have any idea how to fix this?

Thanks in advance

Paul

2012 Licensing server not issuing device cals

$

For the past month I've been battling this issue that I'm having since we switched from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2.

We have set up a 2012 Licensing Server and have installed (quantity 50) 2012 device cals onto it. I've checked the event log on the license server and it reported success. It reports that 50 are available and 0 have been issued.

We have a server running 2012 datacenter hosting 6 windows7 virtual desktops.

I've also set up a remote desktop broker server with a personal collection containing these 6 virtual desktops.

The Remote Desktop Broker is set up to point to the 2012 licensing server and the 2012 RD Session host, where the 6 virtuals are running on.

I am getting messages that there is no licensing server set up and that things will basically stop running in 7 days. Everything looks clean, I've been looking at and event logs that deal with licensing on the Host, Broker and License server.

These machines were running in a 2008 broker environment, and basically were imported to 2012. Could they be still using the 2008 device cals ? I just don't want to be surprised when they stop working one day. This is a production environment. Is there a way to force on of these machines to grab a 2012 device cal??

Thanks in advance for any help

Kevin

User Profile Service failure at logon

I have a number of users who access a single application on my server (2008 R2) using an RDP client through a VPN tunnel or over the local network.  All have been working well until recently when some users have been getting the message "The User Profile Service failed the login.  User profile cannot be loaded."  I have read the various postings relating to this but none appear to answer this problem.  All my users are defined in Active directory on the same server.  Some have roaming profiles and these can login with no problems.  Non roaming users who already have a local profile on the server can login.  But, non roaming users whose profile has gone from the server (and I don't know how they have been deleted) get the above message.  If I set up a completely new user they get the same message, but not if I make them roaming.  All appropriate group membership is OK.

RDP screen goes black after successful remote login

I have a Windows 2008 Server that I have been connecting to once a month remotely to apply OS updates.  Often, I reboot that server and it uses auto-logon to login and run an application.

Today, I rebooted the server and when I try to connect with RDP, I get the login prompt and enter my credentials, I see a few expected messages fly by on the host OS (the last one I see is the word Welcome), but then the screen goes black.

The apps on the server are running successfully because our applications can connect to them, we just can't logon to the desktop of the Windows Server 2008.

I made no configuration changes (I NEVER do) other than to apply the latest Windows Server updates.

I would prefer not to drive to the computers location, or try to coordinate a time to have the server hosting company assist me with troubleshooting; but is there anything else I can do?  Any ideas about what might cause this?

The group policy client service failed the logon access is denied.

This one is starting to get on my nerves now. We've had 2 users suffering this problem on our Remote Desktop server.

We are running two Windows Server 2008 SP2 domain controllers, with two Windows 2008 R2 servers running RD Gateway and Remote Desktop Server.

The first user I had to recreate because of following instructions I googled because it caused the user to always logon with a temporary profile on the server and I could not resolve this.

This user I have managed to cleanly delete the local logon profile.

BOTH of these users are on roaming profiles, as are most of the users that are logging in to this server (for reasons that they move around the office). On the server, the user is listed twice one with a .v2 extension (XP machines at desks)

The user we are having a problem with at the moment was working perfectly fine a couple of weeks ago when they last logged into the server.

Could this be down to me setting an over ride on the settings that force people to logout completely after an hour of idle time, resulting in an unclean logoff?

Some of the messages that are in the event log for when that user attempts to login:

Event id: 1542

Windows cannot load classes registry file.

DETAIL - The system cannot find the file specified.
Event ID: 6001

The winlogon notification subscriber <Sens> failed a notification event.
Event ID: 6004
The winlogon notification subscriber <GPClient> failed a critical notification event.

I'm also getting a constant batch of

Event ID: 510
Folder redirection policy application has been delayed until the next logon because the group policy logon optimization is in effect

Any ideas why this should happen? I need a solution as soon as possible please as these users are running our sales department from home, and this user is due to be on the rota to do it this week! :)
