Can disabling IE Protected mode improve performance on RDS server

$

0

Hi there,
We have about 15 - 20 users on an RDS server and different users often experience several seconds lag when entering text with their keyboards.

We've found CPU usage at different times averaging 30-70%. We have doubled the RAM and added a second processor with the RDS set to use it as exclusive numa node, but the problem doesn't appear to have ceased at all.

Looking into the threads of highest CPU time user processes (often IE11) with process explorer, we found reference to protected mode and this being about 80% of that process demand.

I'd like to test if there are performance improvements with all users having Protected Mode disabled via GPP.

This setting however isn't avail in GPP and we have Win 2008 R2 so IE8 is latest version listed. I've manually edited an IE8 InternetSettings.xml like so http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2733083
add disabled="1" to every XML tag that includes the following value:
name=”2500”
Also set version tag max="11.5.0.0"

But...

After applying the GPO IE still has Protected Mode enabled and configurable.

Is there something else I can do here..?

Win 2102: existing number of virtual desktops is not valid after errors while deleting , how to fix it ?

Hello everyone,

I created a virtual desktop collection with a name format like this , prefix = VDI-, suffix= 1 .

so when I created the first VMs , I had VDI-1 and VDI-2 , later after recreating the VMs, adding new ones and deleting others, the suffix numbers are no longer in sequence , like I started having VDI-1,VDI-2,VDI-8,VDI-9.

I realized I had one problem that probably caused this, because when I delete a VM , I get a warning message:

"RD connection broker could not delete the computer account object from active directory."

so I searched about that error and I added the needed permissions and now deleting seems to work without any warning.

now I have two VMs, when I go through the wizard , the first page it shows I have 2 VMs but in the second page it shows I have 11 ! is there a way to reset the count ? if I delete the entire collection and create it again , will I have any problem with the roaming users profiles ?

Thanks

RDS 2012 issues (Outlook freezing and 'Right mouse button not working')

$

Hello All,

We are experiencing some issues in our RDS environment. The weird thing is that it happens to only a handful of users.

RDS Environment

Our RDS environment consist of a connection broker and 2 application servers. All of which are running Server 2012 (non R2). All applications are started as a remoteapp from a Windows 7 or 8(.1) update 1)) machine. Users working on a axel thin client do not have this issue.

The Problem(s)

1). While using outlook some users complain that outlook freezes the whole time. Sometimes this just happens once and than it works fine. Other times it happens multiple times a day. They experience it while searching for mail, or browsing trough their mailbox, sometimes even while switching folders.

During the freeze a balloon pops-up and displays trying to connect to exchange. When i run a ping from the machine with the problem the servers report a ping time of <1ms. When i redo the ping on a server i don't see any difference. We have already tried to repatch the 'problem' users, this had no effect. (Even when we repatched them near another user with no problems.) We tried disabling hardware acceleration, i've read that this sometimes could solve the freezing issue. Although in our case it didn't help at all.

2). This issue involves the full office suite. Sometimes, some users report that after an period of using ctrl + c/x/v/z etc. they cannot use the ribbon to make selection, and their right mouse button seems to dysfunction.

Example: Cannot switch signature; cannot color cells; cannot switch printers.

The solution we have found that works for a limited amount of time is logging off their session on the connection broker.

I haven't able to find what could be casing this issue, and i cannot reproduce it myself. Although i'm using these shortcuts all the time.

This is all the relevant information i can think of for now. In case i've missed something i will provide the missing information.

Appreciate all the help/thoughts to help me fix (or even narrow down) the issues.

Kind Regards,

Niek

RDS server in Load Balancing

Hello,

I have an RDS Server (Physical machine) to which around 65 users are connected.

I do not have any backup server for the RDS Server.

I want to build a new architecture for my RDS system:

- I want to have 2 RDS servers where the load is split between them (that is around 30users connect to 1server and 35 connect to the second server)

- How to deal with the licensing part between these 2 servers?

- When I installed an apps on one of the server, the apps should be automatically replicated on the second server.

- I want that at any time swap users from one server to the other server.

A solution will be much appreciated.

AD "Log on to..." restriction prohibits RDP access to Server 2012

Hello all,

I have a user account (User1) trying to RDP from a Windows 7 Pro PC to a new Windows Server 2012 Server.  User1 is restricted in the AD within their AD Properties > Account Tab > 'Log on to...' button to only log onto 3 servers.  When the user attempts to log onto the 2102 server, we get this error:

User1 IS able to log onto two other Windows 2008 R2 servers.  All 3 servers are in the same OU.  Other users (without the 'Log on to...' restriction) are able to RDP and log onto the 2012 Server.  When we remove the 'Log on to...' restriction and change it to 'All Computers' for User1, it can login to the server fine.

All user accounts mentioned here are set as local administrators on all servers mentioned here.

The Answer from http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverTS/thread/64f18b65-7fc6-4035-8dcb-7c09bc243469/ does work here.  When I add the 2012 Server and Windows 7 computer User1 is loging in from to 'Log on to...' User1 CAN log into the 2012 server.

Is there some new bit of GPO I need to add to my 2008 R2 AD Domain to allow this for our new 2012 Server? Is there something else within 2012 I need to set for this?

Thanks to all who try to help.  Extra Special Thanks to the special people that provide the actual answer to help me resolve this!

Remote Desktop Does Not Connect to WMDC

This topic has been raised previously but no viable fix or workaround has been provided.

If use Remote Desktop to connect to a machine that has a Windows CE mobile device connected via USB, I am unable to use WMDC to connect to the device.

If a user logs into the target machine directly, the device connects through WMDC as expected.  This issue appears SOLELY to manifest when connecting via Remote Desktop.

As this is a critical way of connecting to devices in our stores, I need a way to connect.  I have found that if I use the same login that the user in front of the machine uses after he connects, I can boot his profile and the device remains connected to WMDC but from a security perspective, that is not a viable option.

Has ANYONE found a way around this?

Server 2012 RDS - User Profile Disks - Errors during Logoff

I have set up a test Server 2012 RDS collection (Single Server for now) and implemented User Profile disks.

I have two problems.

First: My generic test user can connect and does successfully use the user profile disk as expected. However, atlogoff, the system event log contains these errors:

The error (NTFS 137) is: The default transaction resource manager on volume C:\Users\ts3.test encountered a non-retryable error and could not start.  The data contains the error code.

The warning (NTFS 50) that concerns me is:

It appears that the user profile disk is being "disabled" or "disconnected" before the profile data is completely written at logoff. What can I do to troubleshoot this?

Second:

Update: A post from Mike Connor on the following page: -LINK- solved the problem described below.

My administrative user always logs on now with a temporary profile. At the beginning, the UPD was working and mounting. That stopped working. In attempting to troubleshoot, I logged the admin user off and deleted the UPD disk file from the share. I remember it working again after generating a new UPD disk file in the share. Soon, it quit working again. I deleted the UPD disk file again from the share and ever since, it has never regenerated a new UPD andalways logs on with a temporary profile.

Hi all I am trying to do is allow more than 2 users to be able to connect via rdp.

I understand that RDS needs to be installed on the Windows 2012 server.

My questions which RDS roles need to be installed after that, Gateway, brooker, session host?

Which role should i pick that will simply allow more than 2 user rdp

RD User CALs not released after deleting AD account

$

Hello,

we are using User CALs on a central RD Licensing server to manage licenses across out forest.

From my understanding any assigned User CAL should be released after the associated AD account is deleted - however in our environment this is not the case: The CALs are still show as assigned in the reports even though the accounts were deleted several days ago.

The RD licensing server is located in the root domain and the users are spread across the child domains. Is there anything that would prevent the licensing server from detecting that a user was deleted in a child domain?

2012R2 RDS Printer Duplication

$

Hi,

I am having an issue with printer share duplication on my 2012R2 RDS.

Environment:

2012 Server with 40 Printer shares & running Print Services/Manager.

RDS 2012R2 Server with 25 Users.

Printers are Deployed Via Print services (PushPrinterConnections.exe)

No Printers are installed locally

I know for sure that I do not have any duplication in my Printer GPOs; I have gone over them from top to bottom multiple times. When I delete the duplicated printers the next time a user logs in they come right back. All duplicated printers are showing up for all users, even the administrator account that does not have any Printer GPOs applied to it.

I have tried to map the printers directly via GPO and receive the same result. I have deleted the inactive TS Printer ports in registry. I have cleaned up the Printer connections in HKU\GUID\Printers\Connections. I have tried various driver versions. I have re-shared the printers as a different name.

The issues are only with HP Printers

I'm not seeing any errors at all in my event viewer...

Any Ideas? My thanks in advance!

Port 3389 not listening

Windows Server 2003R2. Terminal Services is installed and started. Remote Desktop is Enabled. In the Terminal Services Manager session window, RDP-TCP is shown as being in a listening state. But when I run netstat -a, port 3389 does not show up. RD client cannot connect. Telnet or ssh to that port does not connect.

TCP is working fine: I can use logmein to view the server; I can VPN to the server, I can look at SMB shares once the VPN is up. No TCP filtering is active. The Windows Firewall is not active.

How can I get port 3389 going and be able to RDP in?

The registry is still showing port 3389 as the listening port.

I have removed and re-created the RDP-tcp port without any trouble and without success. The properties are set on defaults.

Remote Desktop devices in the device manager show as operating fine.

It used to work fine and just recently (sometime in January) it stopped working. As far as I know, no new software was installed at that time.

I have reviewed a bunch of stuff found in Google but none of it seems to help, so far.

RDS 2012 R2 + User Profile Disks - corrupt ntuser.dat after RDS Host crashes

$

I have an RDS 2012 R2 Session host collection set up with a connection broker and with UPD's running off a share with Server 2008 R2. All worked great.. until one of the Session Hosts crashed/blue screened and dumped the users.

When the users reconnected from the server that crashed, they all logged in with temporary profiles.  After a bunch of testing and troubleshooting I found that the ntuser.dat file in their UPD's became corrupt.  We have 1 Session host that seems to have an issue with occasional blue screening and it's causing a significant pain to consistently have to re-create the user profile disks of the users that were logged in if a session host is powered down abruptly.

I really like the feature, but I'm starting to look at alternatives.  The content in the profile disks isn't super critical, it's primarily shortcuts and program settings but it's annoying for users when they reset.

anyone else seeing similar issues?  any suggestions to dealing with it? (i'm trying to avoid doing regular backups of a "convenience feature").

Roaming profiles not working from time to time

We have 6 Terminal servers and at random on the servers and at random with the users, the roaming profile will not be delete after the users log off.

The folder that remains in the user folder, this folder however is empty, not even hidden folders or files are present: C:\Users\"username"\AppData\LocalLow\Microsoft\CryptnetUrlCache

What we have tried is to run a log off script that has following in it "net stop CryptSvc" but this also does not work. We have had 6 users again today that had the problem. All on different servers.

We can manually delete the users folders without any problems when the problem occurs but this is not something that we would like to do every day.

I see a lot of similar problems but nowhere a real solution for this.

Ah the event viewer:

Windows cannot delete the profile directory C:\Users\"username". This error may be caused by files in this directory being used by another program.

Audio lag in video while on Terminal Server

Hi Everyone,

We are having an issue with audio being out of sync when viewing flash video on a terminal server.  The terminal server is running Windows 2008r2.  The audio seems to lag behind the video by about 1 sec. We are planning to rollout training videos and about half our users are on Terminal servers.

Here are some of the things we tried:

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2009/05/11/what-s-new-in-remote-audio-for-windows-7.aspx?PageIndex=2#comments

On the server policy:
Computer Configuration ? Administratrative Templates ? Windows Components ? Remote Desktop Dession Host ? Device and Resource Redirection ? Limit Audio Playback Quality (Enabled, Audio Quality: Medium)

In the RDP file add a line that says:
                audioqualitymode:i:1

thanks...

RDS License Cal Question

$

We're in the process of migrating some of our management systems from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2 to gain some of the new powershell features and remote management capabilities.

We have set up a new RDS License Server running 2012 R2 in our development environment.  We migrated our old licenses to 2012 CALs during the migration.  When I perform a licensing diagnosis, I show that we have Overused our 2008 R2 licenses but we still have 2012 Licenses available.

Am I doing something wrong?  We have to migrate our production environment soon and I want to be sure that I do this right.  From reading the Interoperability Matrix (Link), it shows that a 2012 CAL can be used to connect to 2008 R2, 2008, and 2003.  Why would the Licensing Diagnosis show BuiltInOverUsed on the capacity?

Do I need to worry about it or just make sure we have the licenses available to cover all our connections?

By the way, this seems to be the most convoluted and difficult process in Microsoft.  No one can ever seem to get the *correct* answer, more than once in a row.

Using the RD Gateway of existing RDS deployment

Hello,

In our shop, we have two servers each setup using the "Quick Start" option of Remote Desktop Services.  So they are running well and independently.

Since we only have one public IP address and one of the RDS setup can serve external connections without problem.  Can the second server RDS use the first server's RD Gateway so that it can serve connections from outside ?  How this can be achieved?

Thanks for any advise.

Domain computers can’t runt RD Web applications when connected from outside company – Windows server 2012 R2

Hi Everyone,

I have a question related to RDweb service.

I have successfully installed RD web role on windows server 2012 R2.

All went ok. I also installed a valid third party certificate.

I can connect from outside to the server and run applications using any devices: Ipad’s, mobiles and laptops.

The problem is that: Any Computer/Laptop that is joined on the domain can connect to RDWEB from outside the company BUT CAN'T RUN ANY APPLICATIONS. The RD session is taking long time it failes. Note that from inside the network is working.

What it can be?

Thank you in advance,

Criss

Dear Sir,

Please be informed that Currently we are using Remote Desktop Services under Windows Server 2008 R2 OS with Workgroup. We configured STATIC IP (PUBLIC IP) to connect Remotely to the Server.

We created .rdp file and sent to our clients to access remotely.

Now we plan  to change STATIC IP (PUBLIC IP) in the Server. Is it affect anything in Remote Desktop Service and Window server Configurations.

We plan to change IP and Recreate .rdp file and will send to our clients. Is it Ok. Please Explain

Thanking You,

Batcha

Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server Event ID 20499

I keep getting Event ID 20499 "Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server \\SERVERNAME for user USERNAME" in our event logs for multiple servers that are running 2012 R2

I noticed that when this happens the user often is missing items that get applied via group policies such as desktop wallpapers and mapped drives.

I am also using the Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac that was release yesterday on another Mac computer and for certain users it won't launch the redirected folder that I specified when I get this Event ID 20499
