FQDN of RDS in Published Apps

$

Hello all!

We are currently in process of migration our Windows Server 2008R2 RDS Farm to Windows Server 2012. Our Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Infrastucture consists of 1 Broker and 3 Hosts.

1) First of all I am missing the MSI Publishing Feature, the easiest way for publishing RemoteApps. Feeds are not an option, because it seems not to be possible to publish different apps to different users. More than this where are my RDP Files? Do I really have to use a feed and copy the RDP files manually?

2) I am unable to set the FQDN of the broker. The internal FQDN is not an option, since we use expensive Wildcard Certificates. Adding an internal FQDN to an official SAN certificate (like .local or .intern) is no longer supported. Use the workaround (HA connection broker) is not an option.

3) Because of 2) SSO is not working: I cannot chance the FQDN. Using an internal certificate is not an option because external clients running into the certificate authentication problem.

Come on Microsoft, your products become more and more a black box. RDS 2008R2 is working perfect, why do you change a running system in that way?

Monitor which RemoteApps are being used RDS 2012 R2

We have a 2012 R2 RDS Solution up and running, providing access some some applications via the RemoteApp feature.

All is working well but we can't find a way to see which RemoteApps are being used at any given time.

We can see the actual session details (machine, username, etc) but not what they're running....any ideas?

Cheers for now

Hi,

I'm currently tring to add a TSE server 2012 r2 to a TSE farm 2008r2.

I got a broker in 2008r2 and i have followed this procedure to add the 2012r2 server into the farm : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc772418(v=ws.10).aspx

The thing is, my broker redirect me to both 2008r2 TSE server which are in the farm, but not in my 2012r2.

Are those thing compatbile ? Is it possible ? Any log or thing i can check to know why its not working ?

Thx for your help

A standard user can query the DNS cache via the "DnsGetCacheDataTable" / "dnsapi.dll" API and see where other logged on users connect to. E.g. Internet Sites.

Change Connection Broker HA Connection String 2012 R2

$

We have a 2012 R2 RDS Solution running with a pair of HA Connection Brokers using a 2008 R2 SQL Server to store the connection database.

The SQL Server has recently been updated to mirror with a second server and I need to update the connection string on the Connection Brokers to include the new SQL Server as the Failover_Partner.

I've tried using the set-RDConnectionBrokerHighAvailability powershell command but it errors with a generic write error!

I'm wondering if I need to remove the second Connection Broker before trying to update the Connection String or if I can maybe change the string via regedit?

Cheers for now

Remote Task Manager Tool

Is there some way I can view / terminate the processes my Server 2012 R2 RDS users are running from a single console?

I am considering moving away from Citrix XenApp which has such a useful feature.

If there is no GUI, can this be done in Powershell so how?

RDS 2012 ntuser.dat issue

We have a test RDS 2012 server configured running the RD Connection Broker, RD Session Host, and RD Web Access roles.  We installed an ERP application we are currently running on TS 2008 and RDS 2008 R2 servers.

The application is running fine so far with the exception of making a change to the users ntuser.dat file.  We are not using roaming profiles, they are local to the server.

On the TS 2008 and RDS 2008 R2 servers we make sure the user is logged off and run regedit and load the users hive file. (ntuser.dat) We expand Control Panel>Colors and set the GrayText option to 0 0 255. (color blue)  Makes it easier for our "older users" to see it.

If we do the same thing on the 2012 RDS server the change is made but when the user logs in it still shows as the default gray (109 109 109).  The profile is not temporary. We tried to update the .Default and Default profiles so when a new user logs in for the first time it will be set to 0 0 255.  This is how it is set on the 2008 and 2008R2 servers.  But the GrayText stays the default GrayText.  Has anyone else run into this?

Remote Desktop printing: modal dialog cannot be closed or minimized.

Hi All,

We have an Issue with Remote Web Apps when trying to print to a redirected local printer. The redirection box always appears in front of the users printer properties box. It can be moved OK but the cancel and OK buttons are greyed out and its a bit annoying after a while. Is there any way we can prevent this from happening? This Happens with multiple types of printers. I have tried upgrading to the latest rdp client but this doesn't help.

The server is 2008 R2 fully patched and the clients are windows 7 SP1 x32 and x64.

Below is a screenshot of what happens. Hopefully some one may be able to offer some advice.

Thanks very much

RDS shadowing and session hosts

Hello.

I have a problem. I need to know if it's possible to have a shadowing across independent RDS deployments (2 servers each with connection broker + session host). I need to connect to first RDS server and be able to see connections on the second RDS server, eventually be able to shadow users on the second RDS server. Or... The second scenario: To have a farm where I can allow to regular user to connect to specific session host... Is this possible? I really appreciate any help you can provide...

Thank you...

Clients get another 'per machine' license, when connecting via SSLVPN

Hello,

we have an W2008R2 Terminalserver + Licensing Server and 20 'per machine' licenses.

When our users connect to the Terminalserver in the office everything works fine. Also when connecting via IPSEC VPN (SonicWALL Global VPN Client).

But when they connect via SSLVPN in a browser and try to connect to the Terminalserver they acquire a new license, so they have two.

And that leads of course to the situation where we have not enough licences.

I'll attach a screenshot (anonymized) but the licences that are marked, have exactly the same name.

Cloning Desktop and Server OS in Collections

Does MS System Center (with VMM) and in conjunction with Hyper-v provide the ability to clone Desktops/Servers that form part of a Collection?

On the back of that, is there a way updates to the original OS template can be pushed out to the Collections as well.

Citrix use Machine Creation Services to achieve this and I am looking for an alternative that provides matching functionality.

Server 2012 RDS - User Profile Disks - Errors during Logoff

I have set up a test Server 2012 RDS collection (Single Server for now) and implemented User Profile disks.

I have two problems.

First: My generic test user can connect and does successfully use the user profile disk as expected. However, atlogoff, the system event log contains these errors:

The error (NTFS 137) is: The default transaction resource manager on volume C:\Users\ts3.test encountered a non-retryable error and could not start.  The data contains the error code.

The warning (NTFS 50) that concerns me is:

It appears that the user profile disk is being "disabled" or "disconnected" before the profile data is completely written at logoff. What can I do to troubleshoot this?

Second:

Update: A post from Mike Connor on the following page: -LINK- solved the problem described below.

My administrative user always logs on now with a temporary profile. At the beginning, the UPD was working and mounting. That stopped working. In attempting to troubleshoot, I logged the admin user off and deleted the UPD disk file from the share. I remember it working again after generating a new UPD disk file in the share. Soon, it quit working again. I deleted the UPD disk file again from the share and ever since, it has never regenerated a new UPD andalways logs on with a temporary profile.

ESXi and Gateway Manager

I have a server 2012 instance on an ESXi server, and i'm intending this server to utilize RDS for incoming connections as a test bed for our software applications. I have all the CAL's and the licensing manager authenticating them, however I cannot seem to get the Gateway Manager to recognize the incoming connections to the server, and I'm hoping this is because i've missed a step somewhere and not because the machine itself is a VM.

New to the 2008 and 2012 architecture for RDS and looking for a shove in the right direction!

Thanks in advance.

I can login from any PC that if registered with the domain. Is there a way to configure to allow non domain computer? I looked through remote desktop services settings from server manager and my computer properties and also looked at domain security policies none of them has any related settings i am looking for, Thanks.

scaling remote desktop display to larger size ("pixel doubling") ?

$

I'm displaying the console of various remote hosts using Remote Desktop on my 2560x1600 display, and they come out very small. I would like to enlarge the RDP windows and have the remote displays' pixels increased in size accordingly. Is this possible?

I initially thought RDP smart sizing would take care of this but it seems this feature only supports making pixels smaller (scaling down, not up).

Note that I want any configuration changes to be done to my local machine only. Changing text size, DPI, or any other desktop related setting on remote hosts is undesired as they are correctly setup when used in other contexts.

Thanks
Mike

RDWeb Access using Smartcard

$

Our organization requires smart card authentication or certificates for logging into any systems within our environment. Since smart cards are required, users have no password that they can use for logon to the Remote Desktop website. The smart card required option is critical to our security model and cannot be changed. When users travel they take a standalone laptop that is not part of our domain. We need users to VPN in and access the website to get a pool machine assignment. All of this works fine until users get to the RDWEB site. They get prompted for a user name and password even though they don't have have a password. We need them to authenticate with their smart card. What can we do to make this work?

Passwords seem like a huge vulnerability to be required for a component that might be placed in a DMZ. If a smart card cannot be used, can we put a certificate on the box instead for authentication? A user typed password will not work for us.

We do not want the laptop users take with them to require the domain for authentication. We are not looking for single sign on. The laptop is not being granted any access through the VPN to any system other than the Remote access Gateway and Web site.

Server is Windows Server 2012 running Remote Desktop Services. Pool is using Windows 7 systems. Clients are Windows 7 as well.
