Where is the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool in Server 2012 ?

Where is the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool in Server 2012 ?

This is an MMC snap-in found on earlier servers, even if RDS is not installed.  In Server 2012, even if the Remote Desktop Session Host role is installed, this tool is still not available.

I'm looking for the Server 2012 tool to adjust security settings like TLS authentication, High encryption level, choice of TLS certificate, NLA, etc.

Thanks!

remote deskop failed to login

Hi

I Know that this topic has been done and done again but I can't get this fixed. and I think it's because I am doing a slightly strange setup. we have a SBS server and 2008 R2 server setup as a remote desktop server, on the Remote desktop server there is an application that is setup as a remote app and installed on some pc's, some pc's have the password save and work fine, some have it saved and it says it failed to login, the slightly strange part is that the credentials I am using are not the domain login details

the details I am using are the local server users for the remote desktop server. I have setup a user account for each person on the server as a local account.

again it's working for some people but not everyone with saving the credentials.

can some one help as it's really annoying.

cheers

Terminal Services Oddball Issue

Hi everyone......first post so bear with me!

I have a weird issue on our network to deal with.

We have multiple mapped network drives for documents, files etc. We also use terminal services sessions for certain work.

Whilst in terminal services and accessing our "N:" drive. If you right-click on a file and click properties, nothing happens. However doing the same operation on any other network drive works successfully and performing the operation outside of terminal services also works.

Also, just for extra spice, if you visit the mapped location in terminal services via a full path rather than the mapped drive it also works.

So it is literally just inside terminal services whilst using the mapped drive option it doesnt work.

The OS is server 2003 and the workstations are running XP.

Does anyone have a clue because every brain cell in my head is telling me there is no way it shouldn't work.

Thanks in advance!

Slow COM port redirection when using Remote Desktop Gateway

Hi,

We're using scales in our Terminal Server envirement (2008 R2 SP1). These are connected with COM ports to the Thin Clients (Windows 7, RDC 8 client) and redirected to the Remote Desktop Session. This is working fine on the local network. But when we try the same over a WAN connection using the Remote Desktop Gateway, it's working slow. It takes about 13 seconds before the wieght is displayed. On LAN it takes about 3 seconds.

We also tried to connect the network over a PPTP connection and then connect to the Terminal Server. This is also working fine.

So, has this something to do with the encryption?

Windows 2012 Remote Desktop Services access from Windows XP

This is really confusing me.

I have two Windows 2012 servers configured with remote desktop services. They are seemingly identical (as far as I can see) both reasonably fresh installs.

On Server A, I can access rdp from Windows 7 clients and from Windows XP clients (also from Windows 2012 and windows 2003 servers).

On Server B I can only RDP from Windows 7 clients NOT from Windows XP (or Windows 2003). The error varies slightly depending on the client , but is either "Because of a security error, the client could not connect to the remote computer. Verify that you are logged on to the network, and then try connecting again" or from the latest rdp client you get "The remote session was disconnected because the remote computer received an invalid licensing message from this computer"

The servers are both 'almost' identical, but something is obviously different between the two but I cannot work out what.

The environment is a domain.

The servers are both configured independently to each other with their own licencing , RD Gateway, RD connection broker and RD session Host. I cant see anything in the settings for any of these elements that differs between servers.

Any ideas?

Many thanks

Paul

Logging into server 2012 RDS with UPN

It would appear the Server 2012 RDS Login does not support using the UPN. This does work fine on a 2008 R2 RD Server.

if I try to login via the remote desktop client(latest version) using a UPN it goes to the login screen and says the user name or password is incorrect. The username then appears as " \user@mydomain.com". It authenticated properly to the rd gateway first.

If I then manually type in the UPN on the logn screen it will work.

If in the RD Client I use: "domain\samAccountName" it works

If in the RD Client I use: "domain\user@mydomain.com" it works

User profile disks, folder redirection

I have configured a 2012 RDS environment and utilized user profile disks (UPD).  The problem I am having is when a user opens a remote app (other than Office as I can specify save locations in Office via GPO) in the pooled desktop environment the apps default save location is the documents folder on the session host server, and not the documents on the UPD. I have hid the documents folder on the session host servers, but this does not help as the app still defaults to the session host server. Is there any way I can change this?<o:p></o:p>

I have thought of a few ideas, but have not found a way to accomplish them. One of which would be to somehow add the documents folder of the UPD to the save location on the save dialog box, and somehow do not allow users to save to the session host server.<o:p></o:p>

I tried to do a folder redirection from the session host server to the UPD; however, that seemed to not work.<o:p></o:p>

The one thing I noticed was that if a user saves once to the \\tsclient\c\users\%username%\Documents folder with in an app that app will remember and default there; however, getting users to type that in even once for every app is not acceptable or possible.

<o:p></o:p>

<o:p>If anyone has any ideas please let me know.</o:p>

<o:p></o:p>

<o:p>Thanks,</o:p>

Windows Server 2012 - View user log in/log out using Remote Desktop

Hello everyone,

I want to thank you all in advance for all the help.

I have a Windows Server 2012 Standard edition set up and use Remote Desktop Sessions for all of our users. In the past I have looked at how many times my users have logged on, giving me all the information like time, date, log on, and log off. Unfortunately I cannot seem to find the information again and it has slipped my mind how to find the logger. I looked in theEven Viewer then looked in Windows Logs then looked atSecurity or System and no luck. I have found a little of log in information but not exactly what I am looking for. Can someone please help me and guide me where I can see my users log on information? Thank you all again so much and hope to hear from you guys soon.

Remote Desktop Gateway domain mismatch

Hi,

Apologies if this has been asked a number of times but I am trying to find a definitive answer before I make any mass changes.

I'm trying to get RemoteApp and Remote Desktop Services Gateway working but we have a different internal domain name to our external domain. I have an ssl certificate for apps.domain.com although our internal domain is for example domain.local. When I try to connect using the apps.domain.com certificate, I get no errors anywhere from what I can see and no connections in Remote Desktop Manager so I assume it's not doing anything. My question really is am I best to rename the domain to a domain that is resolvable on the internet as our current internal domain name does not belong to us and purchase a SSL cert/wildcard cert for this domain? I've read a few posts suggesting that matching internal and external is a bad idea but wanted some clarification on this.

Many thanks in advance

Regards

Chris

I have a Server 2003.

I connect to it with a XP Pro box with no problems, and printing works.

I connect to it with a iMac box with no problems, and printing works.

I connect to it with a Win 8 box with no problems, except printing does not work.

Yes the printer names are identical on the Server 2003 and Win 8.

Please help.

User Experience/Performance with RD Virtualization Host

We are testing Windows 2012 for VDI solution.  We have a Windows 2012 Data Center server.   On this server we installed the following 3 role services:  RD Web Access, RD Virtualization Host and RD Connection Broker.

We created a Windows 8 VM directly in Hyper V (vhdx stored on SAN) and then tested with a Remote Desktop connection from our Thin Client.  The Thin Client is updated for RDP 8.  The performance was great.

Next we created a Desktop Collection to provision desktops based on this Windows 8 template.  The template was created by running sysprep on the Windows 8 VM discussed above.  We chose personal desktops and storage is on the SAN as well. Memory, CPU allocation and network configuration are identical.

When we connect from the same Thin Client via Remote Desktop the performance on these provisioned desktops is noticeably poorer.  Slower mouse, video streaming, etc.

The only variable we can think of is the RD Virtualization Host where the provisioned desktops reside?  Is this adding some sort of overhead affecting performance?

Install Remote Desktop Services Failed on Windows 2012 Server

I understand RDS is not recommended on DC due to security consideration.  However since I want to play it at home, it is not much a concern.  Such scenario works fine on Windows 2008 R2.  But on Windows 2012, the RDS (session-based, have not tried VDI, but expect same result) installation always fails and is incomplete on DC.

In \Administrative Tools\Terminal Services, I only have RD Licensing Diagnoser and RD licensing manager.  The remote desktop service management service cannot be started (Error code: 0x88250001).  Is there any extra configuration needed for RDS working on Server 2012 DC or before the installation?  Thanks.

Update: this issue has been solved in Windows 2012 R2 Server.  According to http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2013/07/09/what-s-new-in-remote-desktop-services-for-windows-server-2012-r2.aspx

"Single server RDS deployment including Active Directory. We now support running our RD Connection Broker role service on the same physical instance as an Active Directory Domain Controller.  In addition, we publishedguidelines for how RD Session Host could be used without the RD Connection Broker."

The guidelines (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2833839/en-us) primarily apply to Windows 2012 Server.

User profile migration from one File Server to another.

$

Hi All,

Sorry if this has already been answered but my search brings up nothing.  I am moving roaming user profiles from network location A, to network location B.

My procedure is

1. Run powershell script I wrote to take ownership of the profile files, give me full access to the profile files, fix profile permissions to reflect proper user permissions, move them to the new location, update active directory to reflect the new path.

2. Then I update the group policy for those users particular OU and their roaming profile location.

The issue is, even after I've moved the files and the profiles look to the new location, the user profiles still act as if they are being setup for the first time upon next login.

Basically is there a recommended way to move a users roaming profile, without it recreating the account?

Here is the code for the powershell script ( sorry for it not being documented ) just in case you want to look at it.  As far as I can tell though it successfully restores the correct ownership and permissions so I don't think the focus should be at the scripts code( as ugly as it may be )

I am a little bit confused here.  We have a blade server running Windows Server 2008 R2 and when anyone remotes in or logins in through NComputing their home directory on a separate server is set to hidden.  Yet on another fileserver the folders are not being hidden.  It would appear that this is only affecting one of our servers.  Any ideas what could be causing this?

The other user prompt comes up as default for all users instead of the domain users prompt.

The other user prompt comes up as the default prompt for all users instead of the domain users prompt.  This happens when a user hits a particular server, I have 3 others it doesn't happen.  It is a windows 2008 ts.  Any thoughts on where to find this setting and change it?

It was not doing this until we had a consulatant login to this box with logmein.

2012 Remote Desktop Performance

Hi

I have noticed while monitoring and testing our new 2012 remote desktop session host server, when users are working on the system, opening a PDF or a word document spikes the CPU to 40%, or even up to 70% in some cases when I was watching a news article through internet explorer, seems to settle while you are in the document and working, but this is only for one user, what happens when 15 start logging in?  I have also noticed the SQL Server Windows NT - 64 Bit and system processors spikes and has a high CPU for a small amount of time when you open the documents or internet explorer etc.

The server itself is a Hyper-V 2012 Windows Server Standard, 18GIG RAM, 4 assigned virtual processors, AV is Trend Micro WFBS.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Changing Remote Desktop Web Access text fields

Hello,

I am trying to change the text fields in server 2012 RDWeb Pages and I cannot seem to find it. I have tried changing in the following files

default.aspx

desktop.aspx

login.aspx

password.aspx

Beside the string L_CompanyName_text

but this doesn't work.

I have checked online and I only see references to 2008 and before. I have tried those as well but no success.

Any ideas?

Thanks
