New install of WIndows Server 2012, RDS / ADDS Problems

Greetings. We recently upgraded our Windows server from 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012. We basically only use the server to share our Quickbooks company file and publish remote applications. We can't seem to get our RDS to work properly. I had initially installed ADDS and RDS at the same time, and when trying to configure RDS, I got the following errors:

"The server pool does not match the RD Connection Broker that are in it. Errors:
Cannot connect to any of the specified RD Connection Broker servers. Ensure that at least one server is available and the Remote Desktop Management (rdms), RD Connection Broker (tssdis), or RemoteApp and Desktop Connection (tscpubrpc) services are running."

and

"The specified RD connection broker server is not available".

After some digging, I found an article called Remote Desktop Services role cannot co-exist with AD DS role in Windows Server 2012.

saying that ADDS and RDS can no longer run on the same server, effectively requiring two servers to serve the same purpose that our last OS did.

So after removing ADDS, when I go to configure RDS again, I get this error: "You are currently logged on as local administrator on the computer. You must be logged on as a domain user to manage servers and collections".

Am I missing something? All I want to do is set up RDS how we had it(publish remote applications/desktops for remote users), and have credential based access to our share folder where our company file lives.

Is this easier than I think? RDS

First off I have almost zero experience with windows, I have always used a mac. I have Windows Server 2012 (standard version) installed on a fairly robust server and it's only function would be to run accounting/invoicing software that all the users (7) in various locations can log into and use as they all need to access the same datafile. To me this seems like an incredibly simple function but for the life of me I cannot get it to work. If I install RDS it says I need to be apart of a domain yet this is the only machine available, and it can't possible be that one would need another complete server running as a domain controller just so that users could log on the the RDS machine... can it? I have scoured the net looking for a simple solution yet I cannot seem to find one. Maybe it is my lack of experience with windows but the whole exercise has been baffling for me. I tried WS Essentials but it is limited to two users and if I try any more I get about needing to install RDS and then I am back to the same problem with the domain controller. As far as I can tell RDS doesn't work without being part of a domain yet you can't have the domain controller and RDS on the same machine. What are small businesses supposed to do in such a situation as two servers is complete overkill?

If anyone out there has any insights into this I would give my first born (I have no children) for a solution. I just don't understand what I am missing or why when my goals are so meagre that they cannot be accomplished.

Thank you in advance for any advice given.

when the 300 license pack gets to 0 the 500 pack doesn't pick up and it gives the error "no remote desktop licenses..."
but
the 500 license pack is giving out licenses ok.
its just when the 300 license pack gets to 0 it errors out?
is there something i need to force it to do? so the 500 pack will give out licenses after the 300 gets to 0

Thin PC - Remoteapp and Desktop Connections

Hi this is a copy of my post in the Windows 7 misc forum where it's getting no relevant replys.

-------------

Has anyone been able to get this working?

All I get is error 1000 which is that the thin pc can not find the rdgateway or app server.

I know that they are both working and accessible from this machine, I can drag an rdp to the desktop and it runs, I can go to the rdweb site and run applications from there.

I have a full windows 7 test bed and running the wcx config file poulates the remote app programs and I can go to the control panel and type in the url and that works.

I have turned off all the firewalls, the thin pc is configured for hyper-v management and just about everything else works.

As this is the pricnipal use of thin pc - a hyper-v client has anyone got any ideas ?

Hello everyone,

I need to install RDS service on Windows 2012 server but i can't install it because  apparently a reboot is needed.. but no update are available..

Can't use normal or quick install..

I built another Windows Server 2012 RDS and no problem...

On the server who has the problem a KB2821895 is installed.

After a long research on internet, it seems to be a KB problem, do you agree with that?

What can i do to solve this problem?

A microsoft employee can confirm KB2821895 fails with RDS 2012??

Thanks.

Foundation Server 2012 permits only 2 logins

The Microsoft technet documentation gives the impression that Remote Desktop features

and accounts for 15 users are available, but out-of-the-box it permits only 2 simultaneous users.

Moreover, I cannot find any but the most complex and convulated guides for turning on a dizzying

assortment of Remote Desktop services. How could Microsoft have made something so simple

so complicated? Help!

RD session host server name vs. DNS name

$

I am using a single server for RD gateway and RD session host. Mstsc works as expected when I enter the RD gateway name in advanced settings (rdgateway.domain.com) and the server name in computer name (server01). However, we want to use a DNS name for the computer name (in this case 'remote'). Now, we have 'remote' pointing to the IP of the 'server01' server in DNS and I even tried changing the 'clients will connect to' setting from 'server01' to 'remote' but it errors out every time. Am I able to use a DNS entry for the computer name in the mstsc connection window?

TIA!

How to programatically find the remote desktop is locked or unlocked.I used the following code.It doesn't work.it works fine when not in remote connection.

HDESK hDesk = OpenDesktop("Default", 0, FALSE, DESKTOP_SWITCHDESKTOP);// fnOpenDesktop()
//if ( hDesk )
//{
//BOOL bLocked = !SwitchDesktop(hDesk);// fnSwitchDesktop()
//CloseDesktop(hDesk);// fnCloseDesktop()

Remoteapp through a standard NATing firewal

I'm attempting to setup a fairly simple Remoteapp environment for a client who needs remote access to a program. Here's what I have:

1. Server 2012 Standard Active Directory DC (Server12)

  - Has the program installed on there

  - Is an RD Session Host

  - Is an RD Gateway

  - Has RD Web Access

  - Has RD Licensing

2. A Virtual Hyper-V Server 2012 Standard for Connection Broker (RDBroker)

If I'm in the building on the intranet, or connected to a VPN, I can access everything perfectly. However, the remoteapp RDC connections are all looking to connect to RDBroker, instead of the RD Gateway. Is there a way to fix this?

2012 RemoteApp: file associations windows 8 only?

$

I am currently testing RemoteApp and it currently looks like the only way to setup file associations is to set "Specify default connection URL" under RemoteApp and Desktop Connections. This setting requires at least 2012, 8, or RT. Is there any way to get this to work in windows 7? This is a feature we would really like to use.

Boot connected users and disable login for 10 mins question

Hello

I have 2 servers ( 1-2k3 and 1-2008R2) that I need to run a batchscript from a internal developed application at 230am. The problem I am having is that there are users that are either Active on the server or just in the Disconnected state. The Batchscript WILL NOT run if there are users logged into the server, active or not.

My question is this.... Is there a batch script that I could run ( automatcially ) at 229am that disconnects everyone from the server and then prevents them logging back in for 8-10 mins ?

Is there a GPO that I can apply to the server ?

Any help would be great

MS Windows Srv 2008 R2 Std with Part Number 4849MSM with more Calc?

One of my friend is using IBM System and MS Windows Srv 2008 R2 Std with Part Number 4849MSM (1-4CPU, 5CAL) ROK-Multilang with OEM version since feb 2013.

He has been using Window Remote Desktop Terminal/ Terminal Services mostly.

Right now he wants to use more CAL in this server, but this OEM server is only purchased for 5 CALs with 1 Server.

So I would like to ask ...

  1. Can we install more CALs to this server with Volume Licensing ? If it can, what is the additional requirement?
  2.  We are confused to install Remote Desktop Terminal Services among 6VC-02073 and 00Y6440 for IBM.

explore.exe doesn't automatically start on logon

When a user logs in, sometimes only a blue screen is displayed, there is no taskbar, desktop icons, curser etc.

I know explore.exe when ran, will load these things.

However when someone logs on, I check the processes on that machine and that is not running for that specific user. Users cannot right click either as this is restricted.

We run a terminal services network and using Active Directory. When a user is moved to certain groups of users then this will effect the occurrence, however in other groups, it won't.

Is there a way to force explore.exe to start when logging in?

Sometimes, if you leave it at the blue screen it hangs for a short while then suddenly everything appears.

Any ideas?

Remote App Disconnected

$

My company recently decided to set up our main product as a RemoteApp on a Windows 2008 R2 server. They created desktop icons using the RemoteApp Manager. I was tasked with testing the companies ability to deploy the apps using the provided icons. From my Windows 7 computer at work, as soon as I attempt to open the app using the provided .rdp file, I get an error message stating 'Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because an error has occurred on the remote computer you want to connect to'. If I click on OK, I am returned to the desktop. I let the 'powers that be' know what I have run into and the upshot that they gave me is that I installed something on my work computer that will not allow the computer to connect using the .rdp file. I have installed nothing on my computer that would wreak havoc with the .rdp that I'm aware of. I keep my computer clear of non-approved software, so I cannot understand what may be happening here. I can remote into the server housing the remote app and launch the application using the exact icon I am attempting to use on my desktop. I can also create an .rdp file directly using the mstsc.exe logon app and can start the application. I brought the icon's home and put them on my Windows 8 desktop and attempted to run them from that location as well, but again met with the same error. I have tried using a secondary account on the remote app server, but still not able to connect. Anybody have an idea which direction I can turn. The boss that created the .rdp icons threw his hands up and refuses to look at it any longer.

Mac unable to RDP to Server 2012 RDS server

$

I have a user with a Mac, iPhone, and iPad who was connecting fine to a 2008 R2 RDS server. He used MS RDC client on the Mac and iTap on the phone and tablet.

We recently moved RDS from the 2008 server to a 2012 server. Windows clients are connecting just fine to it. But the Apple user is unable to connect on his Mac or his iPhone. He can still connect on his iPad. I'm leaving the iPhone problem for later as I think that's just a configuration issue since it uses iTap just like the iPad which -is- connecting. I'm concentrating on the Mac.

So far my research has turned up only 2 things. Make sure the RDC client is at 2.1.2 as anything earlier will have problems; or use CoRD, though that application seems to have issues of its own.

I've looked in the event logs on the RDS server and there are no events created at the time he's trying to connect.

When he does try to connect he's getting 2 errors. One says "the server name on the certificate is incorrect" and the other is "you were disconnected from the Windows-based computer because of problems during the licensing protocol."

He was running RDC 2.1.0 and I had him upgrade to 2.1.2 but he gets the same results. Before I tell him to try installing and using CoRD, I thought I'd see if anyone else with a 2012 RDS server has run into this and find out what you did to fix it.

RemoteApp and RD Gateway on Server 2012 and iPad

$

Does anyone know an iPad app that can open RemoteApp on server 2012 (may be present icons in a similar way to the RD Web Access, where a user can pick one from the list) and that definitely works through RD Gateway 2012?

Thank you in advance
