RDP ClientActiveX has been disconnected (Reason= 4)

Several times a day users of RDS - whether session host or just a RDP session to a server - are getting an issue where the connection freezes for a few seconds and then disconnects. Reconnecting can be done and the session is still active. The event logged in Remote Desktop Services1 is "RDP ClientActiveX has been disconnected (Reason= 4)". This disconnecting seems to be random as to timing or usage so I am baffled. The servers that I know are affected are 2012r2 and 2016 sitting on a VMware / ESXi hypervisor.

Does anyone have any idea why this might be occurring and a possible fix?

Select Icons To Appear In Taskbar Doesn't Stay Selected Between Sessions - Possible UPD Issue

Every time I log into RDS, I have to re-"Select which icons appear on the taskbar" to have my notification shown in the system tray.  Every time.  I have UPD and Redirected Folders.  In User Profile Disks setup within the RDS setup, I chose "Store all user settings and data on the user profile disk".  Yet, it's not saving my selection of icons that I want displayed within my system tray upon logging off.  What do I need to do so that users don't have to keep re-selecting every time they log into RDS?  It seems to defeats the purpose of using UPD, i.e., is unable to roam properly.  Thank you!  -John Babbitt-

RemoteApp logon takes 60 sec more than standard Remote Desktop logon

Hi everybody,

I have stand-alone Windows Server 2012 configured as DC (for further scalability) with appropriate domain and valid SSL Certificate. The machine is VIRTUAL.

Therefore, it's the same machine for every role (RD Gateway, RD Licensing etc).

Logging on as remote desktop user takes a few seconds and is quite OK.

Logging on of the same user(s) as a remote app always adds 60 secs of extra time.

I talk about the time after password prompt pops up, which happens almost immediately.

The following minute after confirming the password the logon dialog presents the message

"configuring remote desktop".

Those 60 seconds are well documented in the Event Log and the sequence is always the same.

It looks like two consecutive time-outs of 30 seconds each.

Below is an example of events sequence:

I have numbered the events for ease of reference.

As can be seen from event #7  and #14 the user disconnects twice after 30 sec timeout.

From some research it seems like a possible problem may be in the VM settings, which is not in my control so if it is the case I would have to know what exactly to ask from the hosting service.

Any idea/solution will be greatly appreciated!

RDS Licensing server question

Hello, I just setup a RDS licensing server on Server 2016. I got it setup and it appeared to be working so I signed in with a test account and it worked. However I noticed that I now have only 19 of 20 RDS licenses left. Does this mean it assigned a license to my test user and that only that user can use it? If so is there a way to un assign it and allow it to be used by an actual user?

If this is the case what happens when an employee quits is their license just gone?

Thank you

RemoteApp Full Desktop Gone

RDS 2012 R2 with a GW. We were using a reg edit to publish a users full desktop on the server. Friday, that published full desktop is not working like it use to via remoteapp. I'm not sure if a server windows update or client windows update overwrote the reg edit or not but when I look in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\CentralPublishedResources\PublishedFarms\collectionname\RemoteDesktops\collectionname, the key is no longer in the server registry. I used this reg edit:

1. Does the licensing server portion need to be installed on a 2019 Domain Controller or can it be installed on a 2016 Domain Controller?

2. Can the SQL portion be installed on a 2016 Member server?

Issues with saving adobe files from Adobe reader to a TS client redirected drive

Hi all,

I know this is issue is about Adobe but I asked the question there two weeks ago and no replies so I'm trying my luck here.

I have 2 Terminal servers 2012 R2 with different reader versions, 1 has Adobe reader XI and the other has Acrobat Reader DC version 2019.010.20098

When I login to the server with XI and I want to save a file from the program to a redirected drive I have no problems. However, when I try the same on the server with DC I get this alert: "The document could not be saved, access denied".

On the problematic server I am able to save files to that location by copying and pasting or even from office apps saving new \ existing files to the redirected location.

Also, these servers are used to work with SAP. On the problematic server, when a user tries to save a file from SAP to the redirected drive it gets the alert about "disk used for temporary files is full".

Any help would be appreciated.

RDS fault tolerance

Good day! Colleagues. A question. Now we are thinking of switching from RDS HA to W2012R2 for 2016. There are a number of questions:

1. How much better in terms of minimizing downtime and speed of work to organize the work of RDS. Which is easier to maintain RDS HA or just RDS. I often encountered the problem that brokers hooked up in HA, so I had to restart them one by one, which led to farm downtime. There was a problem with the network that access to SQL disappeared, then it appeared, the database was seen by brokers but did not work until you translate offline and online, SQL was in Always on. Isn't it easier to have one broker from the local database, if he dies, then restore it from the backup.

2. If you do RDS HA, do you need to make a second network (hard-bit) to SQL servers, or just one connection is enough (we are talking about virtual infrastructure)

UDP RDP problem with RDS server in Community VLAN

$

Within Hyper-V we have set up the following multi-tenant domain where every customer has his own child domain and Private VLAN (customer tenant is in a Secondary Community VLAN). All machines are therefore Hyper-v guests.
The following problem occurs here. When an RDS server is placed in the Promiscouous VLAN, you can set up a UDP-enabled RDP connection from outside externally via the RD Gateway without a problem. However, if you place this RDS server in the secondary community VLAN, the UDP connection drops. In the log of the RDS gateway you can see that a UDP connection is being set up for a short time, but that it is almost immediately terminated.

So this seems to be a issue with UDP traffic on secondary community VLAN mode. Had anyone had this kind of issue? We tried the RDS VM on different hyper-v clusters (2016 /2019). Updated all the host drivers to the latest

Hi!

I build a RDS deployment based on server 2016. After I finished building my session host and users tested it successfully, I cloned and sysprept the server in VMware vCenter.

Everything works fine and user can login and work on the servers without any problems.

When me and my colleague admins login to the cloned servers with our admin accounts, we always get a message like below;

User profile disks are configured in the environment. Folder redirection is enabled to redirect profile folders to H:\. This is inherited from the original RDS 2008 setup that we are migrating from.

I already tried to delete the entry from the profilelist key in the registry. But this didn't solve anything.

How can I fix this?

User Profile storage vlan question

Hello, we are setting up a RDS environment for roughly 400 users. At a given time we expect the max concurrent users to be around 250. We are setting up a storage server with a DAS Dell PowerVault to hold the User profile disk. Would it be best to put that server on it's own VLAN for the storage piece?

We are also going to have a Synology NAS for user documents and such, is it best to put it on it's own VLAN as well or would it really matter? We aren't using iSCSI for anything just smb shares.

Thank you

2 Node Load Balancer or Active Passive

Hi,

We need to create 2 Windows 2016 RDWEB Servers and configure them either with Load Balancing or Active Passive Nodes type so that if one server is down, users should be able to login to the 2nd server.

As we don't have a hardware load balancer, which is the easiest way to fulfill the above requirements. How many servers we need to have for Load Balance Configuration or Active Passive setup?

Thanks.

Windows Server 2016 Remote App issue

Hi There

Hoping you can help with an issue am having adding remote apps to my existing RDS farm,

I currently have a working RDS farm consisting off 1 x gateway, 1 x broker and 2 x rd hosts, at the moment i can start a desktop session collection either internal or external to my organization without issue.

Now the issue is i have built another rd host to add remote apps, ive added this using my broker and published an app, all works fine internally but externally it does not work, when i start the application it sits on starting remote app for ages then errors out with the following message.

Remote Desktop can't find the computer "RD host", this might mean that it does not belong to the specified network. It looks like its trying to resolve the internal broker name externally and obvioulsy that wont work.

The gateway settings are already enabled globally within RDS, just scratching my head, dont want to mess with the configuration too much as the other rd hosts work fine.

Any ideas what could be the issue ?

"Disconnect" button in start - removed with GPO but still visible Windows Server 2019

Hello,

I have a problem to hide the "Disconnect" button from the Start menu on Windows Server 2019 - Remote desktop services.

I have enabled these two GPOs:

Remove and prevent access to the Shut Down, Restart, Sleep, and Hibernate commands under User Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Start Menu and Taskbar

Remove "Disconnect" option from Shut Down dialog under Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\RD Session Host\Remote Session Environment

With these, the "Shut down, sleep, etc." buttons are now hidden, but the "Disconnect" button did not want to hide. It is still there.

The test user did not have any other GPOs enabled, just one, where these two settings are.

Please, is it a bug or is there anything else to have set up?

Thanks.
Regards,
Stefan

Unable to access server via remote desktop after router change

$

Hi,

I manage my Windows 10 Professional home theatre and music servers via remote desktop. Both have wired connections to the router.

All has been well for many years.

Recently our old modem/router was replaced with a new one. There have been no other changes.

While I can still remote into the home theatre server I am no longer able to remote into the music server:

Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer....

What I can do is:

  • ping the music server
  • bring up shares on the music server on another computer
  • access the music server using TeamViewer

Does anyone have any suggestions how I can use remote desktop to manage my music server again please?
