2016 RDS Double Authentication

$

Can anyone help Windows 2016 RDS Single Server solution.

Sorry I see this was asked as 1000 times. I get two prompts to login to RDS

RemoteApp - Login - Gateway never passes credentials to Server.

I authenticate via the RemoteApp (RDP) - Established a connection the the RDS Server. I get the Splash screen to the server (as RemoteApp configures the remote session) I hit OK to accept the corporate warning we have on the RDS splash screen. Then the RemoteApp closes, I get Windows Security "Enter your credentials" for the remote server (not the gateway) there is no option to remember credentials....  I log in again - I get the corporate warning splash screen again. Hit OK - finally get to desktop.

I have updated the System/Credentials Delegation - setting in the RDS GPO. Adding RDSSERVER/* to both Allow Delegating default cred w/ NTLM-Only Server and Allow Delegating default creds

I have also tried to play with rdp settings

Cannot print to a Client Attached Epson TM-U325

Single Domain, multiple site configuration.  We have an Epson TM-U325 Directly attached (COM2) to a workstation.  When logging into our Server 2008 R2 Terminal Server (Published APP), the software recognizes the Printer and uses the Printer with no problems.  We are upgrading to Server 2016 RDS.  All software works fine, but it will NOT recognize this printer.  Again, Software recognizes printer as being attached to COM2 on workstation and 2008R2 RDS Server.

GPO and RDS config is set to allow Device Redirection of all types.

Any Suggestions?

What RDS licenses do I need and WHERE do I need to put them?

I'm building a new server... [Host Server] (Windows Server 2019 Standard)

The new HOST Server will have 4 VM's

1) [PDC/DC1] - Domain Controller - Windows Server 2019 Standard

2) [Exchange] - MS Exchange Server - Windows Server 2019 Standard / Exchange 2019

3) [Apps] - Apps Server - Windows Server 2019 Standard

4) [Workstation] - Windows 10 Professional

As an Admin, I will be RDP'ing directly to: [Host Server] - [PDC/DC1] - [Exchange] - [Apps] servers for maintenance.

Connections:

1) As an admin, I will be RDP'ing directly to: [Host Server] - [PDC/DC1] - [Exchange] - [Apps] servers for maintenance.

2) A handfull of users (1 at a time) will RDP directly to [Workstation - Windows 10 Pro] for various tasks.

I believe that I need RDS licenses to accomplish this. What I don't know is where do I need to install them to? Do I:

A) Install all of them to the host server?

B) Install 1 on each of the VM's [Host Server] - [PDC/DC1] - [Exchange] - [Apps] - [Workstation Windows 10 Pro]

Thanks!

I already posted this question in Server2016 section - they had no idea - but they suggested to try and find a solution at the RDS-Section

I have 3 Win2016 Terminal-Server - all show the same Problem:

Sometimes Windows Desktop is not responding - no Startmenu reaction, no right-click on taskbar. But i can double-click Desktop-Icons and the program starts. I also have this problem when i log on locally as admin.

In the Eventlog i get:

Information: The Desktop Window Manager has registered the session port.(EventID 9027)

followed by

I have no idea why this happens - hope you can help me

[Resolved] Suddenly Internal Error on RDP and Security Layer Errors in Event Viewer

Just started experiencing this out of the blue today.

Connecting to server 2012 virtual machine with latest RDP program.

RDP users (including me) seem to suddenly be unable to connect to the server intermittently.

Getting the below error messages on several tries. Sometimes it will ask for password and connect normally.

Event viewer shows many instances of:
RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS
The server security layer detected an error (0x80090308) in the protocol stream and the client (Client IP:XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX) has been disconnected.

Stuck at Establishing Connection Quality in 2016 and error message on broker -"RD Connection Broker failed to process the connection request for user Error: Cannot create another system semaphore."

I have users that use remote desktop to connect to a DNS farm name that has all the session host IP addresses. In Server 2016 RDS, I have the Collections setup with all the Session host in it.  I have a HA broker environment setup. I have one Licensing server.
If I use the DNS farm name to connect to Remote Desktop Session Host, randomly the Session host will stop the user at Establishing Connection Quality. It mostly happens when alot of users are logging in during shift change. I have around 10 Session host. If I only have two session host IP addresses listed in DNS farm name, only those Session host will stick at Establishing Connection Quality. The other session host are not affected. I do not see error messages in the event viewer for the session hosts. I do see error messages in the broker server called:
"RD Connection Broker failed to process the connection request for user Error: Cannot create another system semaphore. "
I delete the Collection that is setup in RDS. And recreate the collection. The problem goes away for about a day and comes right back.
I created another collection that does not use DNS farm name connections. It only uses RDweb apps. The session host in this collection never lock at Establishing Connection Quality.
When stuck at Establishing Connection Quality, I have to restart the server to allow users to connect again. I had this problem in 2012 r2, but in 2012 r2 I would have a Blank user in Task manager when Session host locked at Establishing Connection Quality. I would have to connect to user in task manager and see that the user was stuck at Signing out. Once I disconnected from the session, 2012 r2 would then remove the blank user from task manager. A blank user does not appear in 2016 under Task manager but it still gets stuck at Establishing Connection Quality. I would have to do an Ipconfig /flushdns to make the user point to a different host listed in DNS in order to log in.
Why does using the DNS farm name with Session Host IP addresses cause only those Session host to stick at Establishing Connection Quality?

Windows Server 2016 MSI Installer appears and application freezes

Hello,

I'm banging my head against the wall and can't figure out my problem on my own. So I would be very happy about some feedback.

Following situation:
I have a Windows 2016 server running as a terminalserver. I have 5 clients connected to my server. I mainly use 2 applications on my server which communicate with eachother (medical programs, one for managing patient data and the other one to show imported images).

Whenever I start my program A and navigate to options a MSI installer appears which wants to install application B (even tho it is already installed). The MSI installer stops during "Preparing to install..." and program A freezes.
I took a look at my logs and it gives me the following warning: "Detection of product 'xxx', feature 'OleInterface' failed during request for component 'xxx'. It then tries to open the MSI installer and stops.
When I deinstall application B the MSI installer doesn't appear.

My Application A does not need the OLE interface but I tried both installing application B with  and without OLE interface with the same result.

Here is what confuses me the most: with the administrator account aswell as with 4 other user accounts I run in the problem mentioned above. But with 2 other user accounts I do not have any problem at all. There is no MSI installer appearing and my program does not freeze.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Replace the Remote Desktop certificate correctly

$

Hello,

We have Remote Desktop Services installed on a server and currently I am in the process of changing the certificate to a more secure one - this works just fine if I import the certificate via MMC and remove the older one. The problem is, Windows decides to reinstate the old certificate every time the server is rebooted. Granted, this shouldn't be often, however the plan is to upgrade the certificate on many RD servers, and so this automatic replacement of the certificate I want to instate will become unmanageable.

Is there any way to prevent Windows from automatically instating its own certificate, so that the one I have imported will always be used?

As I have said, if I replace the certificate and leave the server on - it works perfectly, it's only a reboot that seems to reset things.

GP not working on RDSH in child domain

Working on an environment with all 2016 servers.  Parent.local domain and child.parent.local domain.  If I log into RD-sessionhost.child.parent.local session host with a user in the parent.local domain everything works except group policy.  On the session host server I see event ID: 1053 processing of group policy failed.  Windows could not resolve the user name.  The RDSH is joined to the child.parent.local domain but is on a separate VLAN and only allowed to communicate with the child.parent.local network but not the parent.local network.  The child.parent.local network can fully communicate with the parent.local network and no issues there.  Does the session host in child.parent.local network need to communicate directly with the parent.local network for group policy to work?

Thanks in advance!!

Setting up failover site and high avail broker

$

I've got a few questions I am hoping to get help with. We have roughly 20 sites and a main corp office. We plan on setting up a rds farm in our corp office and using VM's to host session host servers and the connection brokers. In all 20 sites we are going to have a site to site vpn tunnel so a connection gateway isn't required to my understanding. Then in one of the 20 remote sites we are going to setup another rds server with a dc and connection broker.

So here are my questions

1. We will probably have 6-8 session host VM's. When I ran this in a lab I set it up with DNS round robin for each of the session host, is that the best way to do it. Basically if VM 1 is named sessionhost1 and vm 2 is named sessionhost2 I made an A record in DNS with the name SessionHost and gave it the IP of sessionhost1 and then created another A record with the same name and called it sessionhost and gave it the IP of sessionhost2.

2. If we setup high avail for the connection broker where is the best place to store the sql database? Lets say I have 3 broker servers, 2 at corp and one in the failover site and I reboot the one that has the sql database what happens? Also if I want to have a 3rd one at the remote site for failover are there anythings I should be aware of?

Thank you for your input

Limit Redirect Printers

Hey everyone we have a very secure network designed off of NIST 800-171 requirements and we have an RDS environment from a less secure environment to a more secure environment. On the less secure environment we have printers pretty much everywhere around the world. In the secure environment we only want printing to be done to printers that we have vetted and approved for PIN to Print. The RDS environment is hosted inside the secure environment. We know we can allow passthrough for printers for RDS but we want to limit it to printers that we say are OK and have vetted. Is this possible with RDS that anyone might know? We are using RDS on 2016.

Thanks!

Windows 10 Profile Images Non-Persistent VDI

Hello,

we have a VDI environment with non persistent Windows 10 VDIs. I would like give the user some personalization and load the pictures from the Active Directory when they login. The pictures are already in the Active Directory and we see them in Outlook,Skype,etc...

But it seems the profile picture of windows 10 are stored on the local drive (%systemdrive%\Users\Public\AccountPictures) and not in the userprofile. So when the machine reboots the files cannot be loaded because the machines are non-peristent.

Is there anyway load profile pictures on a non persistent vdi or is it somehow possible to change the location of the profile imges into userprofile?

Best regards
Mat

Unable to access server via remote desktop after gateway change

Hi,

I manage my home theatre and music servers via remote desktop. Both have wired connections to the router.

All has been well for many years.

Recently our old modem/router was replaced with a new one. There have been no other changes.

While I can still remote into the home theatre server I am no longer able to remote into the music server:

Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer....

What I can do is:

  • ping the music server
  • bring up shares on the music server on another computer
  • access the music server using TeamViewer

Does anyone have any suggestions how I can use remote desktop to manage my music server again please?

Strange Hangups on Windows 2012 R2 used as Terminal Server

We have a Dell R620 Server which after the last set of updates we installed on Monday 5/27/2019 started behaving strangely.

It is primarily a Host for Remote Desktop Users and starting the next day when some users tried to save Word or excel documents they generated - the document would hang in the save window of excel or word where they were trying to select the folder to save the file.

Once this hang occurred, as Administrator from the task manager, I couldn't kill the task or even logoff the user.  It then affected the administrative account.  Any users affected get a perpetual signing off screen if they try to log off.

Eventually nothing works right and I have to physically restart the server - I cant' restart as the Admin.

After reboot things seem to work OK for a while , but eventually this reappears.  I have a support case going with Microsoft since the 28th but they seem preoccupied.

We uninstalled the patches and even upgraded word and excel - to no avail.  Dell  checked the Hardware and its OK.

Does anyone know anything about this - is it happening to others??  Any suggestions?

Unable to change URL in single session No Gateway RDWeb installation.

So I am having a little issue.  Made a single session server setup. Ran it as a local LAN setup and was successfully deployed.

Cool I thought, it was ready to meet the internet.

generated a cert  session.domainnamehere.com. Added the cert to trusted storage, then exported to create pfx and tried to add to the RDWeb services.  I was given an error that only one of the two servers could be contacted.

There is no indication as to what the second server was to be.

ran set-RDPublishedName.ps1 and it reported success however the URL showing in the services management window still indicates the URL as https://machinename.domain.local rather than session.domainamehere.com

Verified that IIS default site, RDWeb, Pages, DefaultTSGateway was set to the correct URL.

I did not think that I needed to run RD Gateway setup in this scenario, but ran it anyway.  Added the external domain name as requested. Added cert with a trusted blessing but a warning that the same cert has to be applied for the RDWeb service as well. Tried to add the cert to RDWeb service and same cannot contact one of two servers error showed up.

removed Remote services role.  Re added Remote services role.  Was not given opportunity to input URL as I was given on the first time through.  Still showed up with the old URL ready to cause me havoc.

RDWeb now does not show any thing to choose in the user window. Not even the quickstart apps, nor newly created ones.

So It looks like I have two issues.  How to get the RDWeb service talking as if it is on the same server as it is (with the correct URL expressed). And issue two how to clean up the RDWeb collection data.

Remote FX crashes in Server 2019

Hello,

I upgraded our RDS infrastructure to Server 2019 and ti seems any kind of right click context menu or admin prompt will eventually crash the session after about 15-20 seconds. For instance, with an admin prompt after you enter the credentials, a remaining white box will hang around until the remote session crashes. No settings were changed between Server 2016 and Server 2019 however the infrastructure is in VMWare. Also, If I turn off Remote FX the box is then black and the same thing occurs. Please Help!

Thanks!
