Hi, I have a question regarding the Terminal Services based on Windows Server 2019 and the ability to change the local FQDN domain name to public. The script that I used to use "Set-RDPublishedName" to ver. Windows Server 2016, not working already in 2019, do you know any solution?

unable to connect via RDP

Hey guys,

I have a windows 10 machine that I am trying to get connected to a server 2016 server via RDP.Whenever we try to connect the rdp client tells us that we cannot connect to the remote server. I looked at event viewer on the server and cannot seeing any sort of attempt to login. I cannot see anything saying that the client is trying to connect to the server in the security log, or in the RDP logs.I see nothing on the logs on the end users computer. I also can't see something in services or installed programs that would be preventing this. where would you suggest looking?

RemoteApp "Jumping" to Second Screen

Setup

I have Server 2016 set up with Remote desktop Services.  Its primary function is to deploy one particular application, installed on the server, with RemoteApp.  The Configuration for the workstations is being pushed out with a GPO, and RemoteApp shortcuts are successfully being placed in the Start Menu.  We have approximately 50 Users utilizing this application, and for 95% of them this works perfectly.

Issue

While running the application on one monitor (right), under certain circumstances, the application will jump to the second monitor, maximize, and "appear" to be frozen (no response to mouse movements). We have a remote control software used for troubleshooting.  When we shadow the console on the users workstation, you can clearly see the application is open on the second monitor (left).  When we shadow the users' session on the server, the application appears to be maximized on the right.  Restoring the window restores the window to the right monitor, both on the workstation console (jumps) and server session, and regains control.

Attempted Resolutions

We have attempted video driver updates, alternate graphics adapters, complete windows updates, restoring older versions of mstsc.exe (for Windows 10 1803 users, per another hotfix), and switching primary monitors and resolutions.  The problem still arises.  Problem only exists for particular users for dual screens.  User A and User B have identical hardware and dal screens, but problem only exists for User A.  User C has a different make & model desktop, and User D has a laptop with a docking station, and both C & D experience the same issue.  We cannot duplicate the issue on workstations that aren't experiencing it already.

Remote Desktop Fails as soon as a RDS Collection is Created

Abbreviated Problem:

As soon as I create a RDS application collection I am unable to use any remote desktop services.  Reboot has no effect. Security Layer is set to "Negotiate" and Encryption Level is "client compatible".  Prior to creating the collection standard RDP works; after it is created, however, RDP (including remote apps) fail to connect with the error :

Likewise, Immediately upon deleting the collection, Remote Desktop begins working again.

-This is a quick setup RDS deployment that exists only on one virtual Server 2016 instance.

___________________

Additional info:

The collection was working as intended for several months but I discovered that the above error would occur for all users and devices after a reboot of the RDS server or after a restart of the remote desktop services on the RDS server.  Heeding the advice of a RDS forum I deleted the application collection and thought my troubles were behind me once remote desktop began to work again.. wrong.. As soon as a new RDS collection is created the error returns for all connections.  I initially created the collection over an RDP connection and thought that might be the cause but the issue remains even when using a vmware console while creating the collection.

Obviously my RDP ports are open from the client computers to the RDS since RDP works after the collection is deleted -windows firewall is also off.

Hoping someone with more expertise and experience with RDS can help here.

Licensing

Hello, I setup a VM on HyperV and run Remote Desktop services on it. I setup all the components including licensing. Everything looks fine except when I try to login to the server remotely as local admin I get a message that there is no licensing. I thought that there were two build in admin licenses and when I login remotely as admin the licensing I have setup for regular users would not be used. Any thoughts? What can I check or need to change for the admin licensing to work?

Unable to display RD Web Access when using FQDN

I am setting up a test server for RD Web access, after the setup I tried accessing the page using FQDN but after the login page I get the: Unable to display RD Web Access error message, this only happens with Edge HTML 17.17134 if I use Chrome or Firefox it all works fine. Also with Edge if I just use the netbios name or IP address the error doesn't occur.

I need to use FQDN because of the certificate.

Any ideas?

Remote Desktop Web App users cannot connect.

Hello All,

I have an issue on one of my Windows server 2008 r2 servers. For some reason our users accessing the server using the remote desktop web app cannot connect randomly. They are able to authenticate and get past in the login screen and connect to remote desktop but when they try to open an app it starts to load the app and you select show details it goes from setting up desktop to logging off instantly.

This is only affecting the users accessing the server using remote web apps and does not affect the users accessing the server using remote desktop. Also the only way I can get the web app users back online is by restarting the remote desktop service on the server. I have checked the logs and nothing looks off and I have tried looking at the IIS roles and restarting this service and it did not help. I also ran an elevated command prompt and used sfc /scannow.

Bypass the RD Gateway for local addresses - Direct Access + MFA

$

I've stumbled upon a problem regarding that Windows 10 (1803) Direct Access client does not utilize the function "Bypass the RD Gateway for local addresses" when using RDWeb Remote Apps. The reason why we want to utilize the bypass feature is because we enforce MFA for external users but don't want it for Direct Access clients.

When using the same Direct Access client with a standalone mstsc.exe and entering the rdcb.contoso.com as the target computer and rds.contoso.com as the gateway with the setting "Bypass the RD Gateway for local addresses" it works, no MFA is enforced for the user.

We have the following setup. The server names and IP-addresses are fictive.
2 nodes RDGW & RDWeb (Server 2016) - SE003.contoso.com and SE004.contoso.com
2 nodes RDCB (Server 2016) - SE005.contoso.com and SE006.contoso.com
2 nodes Azure MFA Server (Server 2016) - SE008.contoso.com and SE009.contoso.com
1 node Direct Access (Server 2016) -SE010.contoso.com
The MFA solution is setup using RADIUS + NPS.

We use Split-DNS.
(RDGW & RDWeb) rds.contoso.com - Externally points to Loadbalancer 12.13.14.15 and internal points 10.1.1.3 and 10.1.1.4 (No LB).
(Direct Access) da.contoso.com - Externally points to Loadbalancer 12.13.14.20 and no internal record.
(Connection Broker) rdcb.contoso.com - Externally points to no record andinternal points 10.1.1.5 and 10.1.1.6The whole *.contoso.com is present in the NRPT-table with nls.contoso.com and da.contoso.com as the only excluded entries.
We only use IP-HTTPS for Direct Access.

When we use Test-NetConnection -ComputerName 'rds.contoso.com' -Port 3389 from a Direct Access client the test is successful. When we disconnect the Direct Access tunnel and run the same cmdlet it's not successful. If we change the ComputerName/DNS to rdcb.contoso.com the test is also successful when the Direct Access tunnel is up.

Anyone?

Hello,

I have setup user profile disks and was wondering if there is any way to set this up so every new user that connects to the RDP server for the first time and gets a new profile created gets certain settings such as:

Blue desktop

Desktop icons

Taskbar and folder settings

EI settings

Please let me know if this can be archived and how?

Problem with reinstall RDS (Terminal Services)

I have Windows Server 2019 with the Terminal Services installed (RD Connection Broker, RD Licencing, RD Session Host and RD Web Access). Unfortunately, by accident, I removed the Default web site from the IIS server where RD Web Access was installed. I have attempted to reinstall RDS services. I was able to easily uninstall all RDS services except RD Web Access.

There is a 0x800f0922 error when I try to uninstall Web Access from Server Manager. Similarly, if I use PowerShell to remove the role (Uninstall-WindowsFeature -name RDS-Web-Access).

PS C:\Windows\system32> Uninstall-WindowsFeature -name RDS-Web-Access

Creating Collections for Single Server RDS Deployment

$

Building out a single server RDS 2016 deployment.

Can I create multiple Collection (need 3 in total) for about 20 users

When I click create collection no Rd Session host appears. I have a single host for all RDS rolls.

If not going to work in single server env - what is the best way to setup my scenario?

I have 20 users that would require 3 collections.

Standard Apps

Standard Apps + Specific Office Plugins

Standard Apps + Different Apps

I wanted to build three collections and then assign the users to 1 of the three so we deploy the minimum each users needs, and some groups that dont need certain apps dont get them.

Thanks,

Windows RDS Server 2019 looking for Windows 2016 Licensing Server

$

This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.  Our DC is Windows Server 2019 and we have a member server Windows Server 2019 as our RDS Server.  I couldn't get the RDS server to see the DC running the RDS Licensing role, so I installed the RDS Licensing role on the RDS server, activated it and installed the 10 per user pack. It obvious can't see itself, but what is even more weird is that it's asking for a Windows 2016 Licensing server when it should be looking for a Windows Server 2019 Licensing server. What is really sad is that MS support isn't trained on Windows Server 2019 (BTW, a released product), so us as a MS Partner can't support our customers who embrace Windows Server 2019.  If anyone has any ideas, I'd be open to a conversation.

Keep Audio subsystems active on logged user after RDP session closes (server 2016)

As per the title, I'm using a windows server 2016 as a host for relaying an audio stream. Everything works perfectly when an RDP session is active (and the sound is playing on remote device), however it immediately stops after disconnecting from RDP.

My guess is some of the audio services is stopped after RDP is killed, but I can't figure out a way to overcome this :(

RD is terminated before even starting, Access is Denied.

I've been having this error for while now, I connect to one of the servers and it starts doing its thing apparently going through every step just fine but then I get this Access is denied message:

Normally I wouldn't bother trying to fix it because I don't have the time nor the resources to throw at it, I just snapshot the machine back to a working state, files will are centralized in non-Microsoft redundant servers, they are safe. However, when I tried snapshotting back this VM way back to the beginning of the month the error was still there. I figured, it's a domain issue then, so I took it out of the domain and it still wouldn't let me in.

I connected to the machine's console (via Fusion, it's hosted on ESXi) and checked the log.

There was nothing descriptive except for a "reason code 12" which I knew meant basically nothing because I had looked for it before when this started happening, so I went deeper since my snapshot safety is over I need to know how's it fixed.

Most of the RDS related branches in the tree were empty but in Microsoft/Windows/RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS/Operational I found some data, actually a ton, 50+ events per connection attemp. They all occur in the same second. I started following the messages, the one where everything fails is:

Disconnect trace:CUMRDPConnection Disconnect trace:'calling spGfxPlugin->PreDisconnect()' in CUMRDPConnection::PreDisconnect at 4477 err=[0xc], Error code:0xC

Here's a table of the logs I made copying them one by one, I tried adding it here but exceeded the message length: http://fetch.vitanetworks.link/stationary/technet/eventlogerror.pdf it's a PDF, so it should show right in the browser.

Using the system with another account reveals the user that failed to log in, tho whom access was denied, is somehowstill logged in. I was informed this when I tried to restart the computer and the warning I would kick other users out showed up. No configuration has been changed on the server, on DCs/GPOs, on the client, nor on the hypervisor. And of course I have no idea what does that graphics thing mean.

The other directory with events was on Microsoft/Windows/RemoteDesktopServices-SessionServices/Operational with a way more decent 2 events per connection attempts:

1    Error        The RDP display control module failed to change the session monitor layout. The operation failed with error code 0xFFFFFFFF.
2    Information    The RDP display control module successfully changed the session monitor layout. New layout has 1 monitors.

And that's all the info I have. Could you point me where to go next to get more information or how to proceed from here? I don't want to reinstall Windows, I put way too much time on these machines. :/

Thanks for your help!

I bet you think this post is about you. Don't you…don't you. ♪

Black Screen for Users in RDS 2016

$
0
0
Windows Server 2016 RDS setup with one DC and 3 session host servers, all running as VMs under Citrix XenServer. This is a session-based deployment for RDP sessions.

Occasionally (that means approx every 7-10 days), new users logging in to RDS get a
black screen. That is, they can successfully log in but then see only a black screen, no task bar, nothing. Users can see moving mouse cursor, and they can bring up the Task Mgr with Ctrl+Alt+End. Sometimes, after 10-15 minutes the user desktop becomes visible, but most of the
time it never does.

Normally, every additional user logging in after this occured also gets the black screen. The only solution is to reboot this session host server.

The servers are updated to PT (July 2018).

Note - I installed an additional session host server recently and noticed that this phenomena does not seem to happen on that one (at least not as frequent). Same update status but was installed from later download media (evaluation edition download from internet, then converted to Standard edition by inputting a license). They do, however, all show the same build number in the settings app: 14393.2248.

So is it recommended to make a new install for all session host servers? Do not really understand why I would have to do that. They have the same update level, just one was installed from a later base media - but it's the same edition. Doesn't a server end up with an identical setup no matter what original media file was used, with all the updates? That should be the point of the updates, or not?

Or is there any other underlying reason for the black screen phenomenon which I should address?
