Problem where RDP mouse click and keyboard inputs do not function

$

We have had a RDS session host running 2012 R2 for just over a year with no issues what so ever.  Around the July timeframe we started to see issues where occasionally a session would connect and while the mouse pointer would move the mouse clicks and keyboard input was ignored but only after the session desktop loaded.  The only thing I have found to resolve the issue is to restart the server.  When this occurs it seems to occur for any new sessions.  I do not know if it also affects established sessions as our usage of the session host is very low over the summer.

Now that we are starting up our fall semester were getting reports almost daily of this occurring and we have been restarting the server daily as a result.  I took a quick scan over the last few pages of questions in the forum and didnt see anything that stood out as someone else having this issue so I figured I would start a topic to see if anyone had any ideas what might be going on or if someone had this issue and got it resolved.

Remote Desktop Client fault tolerance for RRDNS entry

$

I've been hunting for a few months to try to get an answer to this question and haven't found any articles confirming my claim.

The product that I am integrating with involves Remote Desktop Services. Take the following scenario into consideration:

Two servers with Remote Desktop Services are installed and configured. I'd like to configure a "poor mans" load balancing to these two RDS servers using a Round Robin DNS entry. I've read somewhere in the past that in an end user's Remote Desktop Client v6.1 or above, the RDS Client is capable of being able to provide transparent fault tolerance of an RDP connection to a round robin DNS alias.

For example, I create a RRDNS entry called rds.company.com that entry points to both RDSHOST1 and RDSHOST2.

  1. With both servers online, I attempt to connect via Remote Desktop Client to rds.company.com
  2. I am connected to RDSHOST1.
  3. I close my connection and attempt another connection to the alias and am connected back to RDSHOST1.
  4. I then power off RDSHOST1 and attempt another connection to the alias, I then get connected to RDSHOST2 (there is no error message or anything displayed by the Remote Desktop Client to the end user showing that it may have failed connection to RDSHOST1 initially).
  5. I then attempt a few more connections to the alias to confirm that I am still being connected to RDSHOST2 without any error messages being shown in the client.
  6. I power off RDSHOST2 and power on RDSHOST1.
  7. Attempt another connection to the alias and am connected to RDSHOST1 without seeing any connection failure messages in the RDS Client.

Does this mean the RDS Client has some built in ability to take a RRDNS alias and intelligently attempt to connect to one address returned from the alias and if it fails it automatically attempts a different entry in the alias until some predefined timeout? I'm trying to understand why this works the way it does and whether this is a "feature" of the RDS Client that seems to be undocumented.

Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Carl

Change language for non unicode in multi user environment (RDS 2012 R2)

Hi,

Russian users of the SAP application published on RD session host servers reported that when they export the data (in excel) they get some non readable characters in it and when the setting (language for non unicode program) on the RDSH server is changed to Russian, the non-readable characters in the exported file are readable properly in russian language.

Now, my concern is that this RDSH server is used my users across the globe and will changing "language for non unicode program" impact the users outside Russia?

Also, if in future, any request for reading non unicode came in for the users from different country, lets say china, then how will that be tackle as only one language for non unicode program can be selected at a time per machine (RDSH server)?

Let me know if more clarity is needed in my query.

Rohan

Is there a way to allow 2008 R2 RD users to change language settings, formats, keyboards, and non-unicode settings in remote desktop

Hello,

I'd like the RD users to have very little ability to change things on the RD server (e.g. not install software) but I would like to give them the ability to select their language settings from top to bottom.   There are times they may need to switch their own language settings between two languages so I don't want to hard code it into a group policy.

It looks like UAC is requiring admin login to change the settings in Region and Language.

Thanks

Remote Desktop services bypass RD gateway for local addresses remoteApps stops working

Hello Everyone,

I have a weird problem and I have been pulling my hair please help!!!!!

I have a windows 2012r2 running the RD web access, RD gateway, RD licenses and session host. I have added another RD session host with same specs.  The problems is some of our users are not able to open remoteapps if we have "Bypass RDgateway for local address". If we disable it the other group gets affected.  The issue was not there when we had only one session host. I have done a pcap on the affected user's machine and it is trying to connecting directly to our internally IP address 192.168 bypassing the rdgateway.

The issue is resolved once I remove the new session host without disabling the "by pass rdgateway for local addresses" but we can't remove it because one system won't be able to support all the users.

any help will be greatly appreciated.

Windows shortcut keys not working for RDS remoteapps

Hi,

Users have reported the issue with remoteapps on the RDS 2012 R2 environment that they are not able to use shortcut keys like windows+Left/right arrow on remotepps as they were able to do with same apps on their desktop. This is impacting their productivity and is looking for the same functionality with apps installed on the RD session host server.

I have checked that the shortcut keys work fine on remote desktop/VDI but not on remoteapps and I couldn't find anything helpful over the net. Is this feature even available on remoteapps?

Multiple users using RDP from Shared Workstation want to force "Use another account" to be default

$

I have a few shared workstations on my network operating as Remote Desktop Terminals (either running Windows Thin PC, or Windows Embedded). The shared workstations have multiple users connecting to terminal servers via RDP. When connecting via RDP, the Credentials pop-up tends to store the previously used username, or the currently logged in username, which is confusing to users. The shared workstations have a common default user account set to auto logon

Is there a way to force the Remote Desktop Connection Client/Credentials pop-up window to always default to the "Use another account" option with a blank username and password field?

I am using NLA, SSL, and High encryption on my Terminal Servers. The option to "Always prompt for password" is disabled on the RDP Host security.

I also have the workstations set to "Prompt for credentials on client computer" and have enabled the "Do not allow password to be saved" setting.

Any suggestions?

Slow RD connection via RDweb

$

Hi -

Have a public facing 2012r2 server running RDGW and RDweb roles.  There is no RDS deployment, we only use this for RDP pass-through to internal servers.

After login in via RDweb and going to 'Connect to a remote PC'  this connection may take anywhere from 30 seconds to 3 minutes to secure and establish the connection to the remote server.

Once it gets through, if I disconnect and try again, it will connect almost instantaneously.  This occurs consistently.  If the client hasn't connected in a while, it will take a long time initially, every time.

Each time the connection process is slow there is an eventid 11 is generated in the RDGW server:

event 11 Source: RDWebaccess

RD Web Access was unable to contact "computer.domain", which is the server that is specified as running the RemoteApp and Desktop Connection Management service. Ensure that the name of the server that is specified as running the RemoteApp and Desktop Connection Management service is entered correctly, and that the server is running and available on the network. Error code: 2147944122.

This message does not appear on subsequent connections.

As mentioned I do not have any remoteapp or SH servers setup in this deployment.

thanks

RDP into Black Screen then Disconnects 2012 R2

$

I have several servers that the last few weeks all randomnly have started causing connections via RDP to go to black screen for about 10-15 seconds then close the session.

I have checked roll up updates such as KB2887595 are installed, I can console into them from my VM Console, however RDP does not let me in unless a full Reboot occurs, sometimes multiple times.  The fix may be temporary for a few hours, but may quickly revert back from not allowing new connections to log in.

These servers are part of a collection farm, I have disconnect sessions set to 1 minute, idle set to 15 min, active set to never for the connection properties for these farms.

I am at my wits end, cause I have roughly 6-8 servers all behaiving the same way with roughly 600 users hitting this set of servers on a daily basis, this is overflowing my help desk guys and I need a fix or solution...like last week.

Please help!

Hello - I would like to disable the RDS users ability to perform a search with the everywhere option.  Current the users can search for things like server manager, Windows backup , etc but I don't want them to have this ability.

Here are a few of the GPO's that I have tried and didn't work:

User Configuration\Administrative templates\Start Menu and TaskBar

Remove See more results / Search Everywhere Link - Enable
Do not search Files - Enable
Do not search programs and control panel items - Enable

This GPO works but only for the Apps view

Search just apps from the Apps view - Enable

How to set up remote desktop licensing mode in windows server 2012

$

Hi,

I've deployed yesterday a windows 2012 server (RTM) and set up the license server for my 10-CAL licenses. That's ok.

But I can not see a way to point my server to see the license server. Every time I log in, I receive a message that the RD services will expire in 119 days.

Using the diagnosis tool it says that licensing mode isn't set up.

Where I can find the tool to set up this licensing mode? In windows server 2008 this question was asked in the setup wizadr.

Thanks a lot!

Clean install Windows 10 can not RDP via 2012 RD2 RDG.

I have two systems, both clean installs of Windows 10 Pro.  Both systems used to connect to work via a Windows Server 2012 RD RD Gateway.  We saved the RDP shortcut and they both stopped working now.  We create a new short-cut with same or different creds and still does not work.  Failure seems to be when authentication takes place on the RD Gateway server, not the remote computer.  I know this since I removed all creds and enter each manually and this happens when I am asked for the RD Gateway creds.  Now if I connect from any other system it works fine, if I connect from my phone via MS's RDP client it works fine.  I checked event logs both on the client jumping in and the RDG server and there is nothing when this happens.

Error: Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because an error occurred on the remote computer that you want to connect to.  Contact your network administrator for assistance.

Any thoughts?

Hi, i have a Terminal Server License Server on a Windows Server 2008 R2 with CALs per user. It serves license for XenApp environment. Now we are planning to migrate to 2X Parallels and it will run on a Windows Server 2012 R2. The CALs we have already are Windows Server 2012 R2, my question is if we can have two Terminal Server that issues the same CALs.

Thanks.

Remote Desktop Services role cannot co-exist with AD DS role on Windows Server 2012 R2

Hi All,

I have windows server 2012 R2 in my environment, on that I have install RD connection Broker Role this server also hosting DC server role. Now I am not able to start RD connection broker service. facing below error message.

"The Remote Desktop Connection Broker service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs."

-- I found article "https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/kb/2799605" bit this is for server 2012 not for R2.

-- So is there any article which says that DC and RDS role cannot co-exist? OR is there any other option to start the RD connection broker.

Thanks, Sajjan T
