How do I set up RDS on server 2012 R2?

$

In what is fast becoming a trend, it appears the "guide" for setting up RDS is a trip down a rabbit hole that leads everywhere apart from where I want to go.

I have Server 2012 R2 installed, the machine needs to be used to allow multiple users to connect to it concurrently for testing purposes. I have installed RDS (Connection broker, gateway and licensing options) but I can find no instructions for actually installing/enabling the licenses we have for RDS.

How do I do this?

Windows 2012 - Not Able to Copy Paste Files over RDP.

Hi,

We have Windows 2012 R2 Servers and having Terminal Services Installed, the proper resource redirection settings is in plance (Drive, Clipboard etc) but still we are not able to copy / paste the files over RDP, when i take RDP of Windows 2012 R2 and trying to copy files from my laptop to server the paste option is always showing as grayed out.

We are able to copy/paste files over RDP on Windows 2008 Server which is located in same OU in Domain where Windows 2012 R2 located, same GPO's are applying on both servers. We have also tried on Physical/Virtual/Domain/Workgroup/Terminal Servers/Non Terminal Services Windows 2012 R2 servers and found same issue.

Please suggest what needs to be check further.

RDS 2012 R2 + Office 365 Shared Activation - UPD's not unloading.

Greetings and welcome to this thread.

We have consequently been experiencing errors with RDS 2012 R2 User Profile Disks / UPD's not detaching after user logoff in brand new Remote Desktop Services 2012 R2 collections.

As an example we have this enviroment:

DCSRV01 - Domain Controller

DCSRV02 – Domain Controller

FILESRV01 – Fileshares and User Profile Disks

RDSGW01 – RD GW

RDSSB01 – Session Broker

RDSSB02 – Session Broker

RDSSH01 – Session Host

RDSSH02 – Session Host

ADFS01 – ADFS

WAP01 – WAP

Only 3rd. Party application installed on the session host is Office 2016 Click-To-Run with shared activation. (GPO for SSO activation etc.)

Consequently User Profile Disks does not detach upon logoff using the newest build of the Click-To-Run Service.

We have tried with multiple builds of Office 2016, and downgrading.

If we disable the C2R service or uninstall Office 2016 C2R completely the UPD’s will detach just fine upon logoff.

We have a bunch of setups like the above where we can produce the issue. However we also have one older setup, with an older version of Office 2016 C2R, that does not seem to produce the issue. However all new setups produce this.

Has anyone experienced issues comparable to this?.

We also have setups with many users running both Office 2010, 2013, 2016 Non-C2r versions on both 2008 R2 and 2012 R2 without any issues at all whether we’re using UPD or Roaming Profiles.

So it seems like there is some issue/bug with the newer versions of Office 365 C2R and User Profile Disks / UPD.

Hope for some well shared knowledge, tips or bugfixes for this :-)

All the best, Jesper Hassing - MCTS SCCM 2012 - MCSA 2012 Server - MCP

Live Migration of 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Server Disconnects Users w/Desktop Experience

We have a 4 node Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V failover cluster and amongst the VMs running on this cluster is a Windows Server 2012 R2 "terminal server".  The only roles/features installed are:Remote Desktop Session Host and Desktop Experience.

When I live migrate this VM to another cluster node, RDC users are disconnected.  This message is displayed for 5-10 seconds:

Reconnecting message

The client usually reconnects fine, but this is annoying.

I have many, many other Windows 2012 R2 servers running on this cluster.  When I live migrate any of those VMs, the RDC clients pause for 1-2 seconds (it appears to be hung), but then resumes working normally without a "Reconnecting" message.  None of the other VMs have this problem, but none of them have the above roles/features installed.

Our users don't mind a 1-2 second delay, but they are very annoyed with the 5-10 "reconnecting" behavior.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

UPDATE:

I've done much testing and determined that this problem is related to theDesktop Experience feature.

  1. I created a clean VM, installed Windows and updated it.
  2. I remoted into it, and live migrated the VM many, many times. The RDC would pause, but never display the "reconnecting" message.
  3. I installed the Desktop Experience feature, and rebooted as needed.
  4. I remoted into it, and live migrated the VM many, many times. Nearly every time, the RDC would disconnect and display the "reconnecting" message for 5-10 seconds.

Please help, thank you.

Disabling TLS 1.0 on Server 2012 R2 causes Remote Desktop Management Service to fail to start

Very basic RDS setup on Server 2012 R2.  Single VM running all roles.  Everything works fine until I disable TLS 1.0 on the Server.

Then Remote Desktop Management Service fails to start with Error code: 0x88250003.

Service Control Manager error gives error code: %%2284126211

And I see tons of SChannel 36871 errors: A fatal error occurred while creating an SSL client credential. The internal error state is 10013.

Any ideas?

Server 2008 user logoffs application hangs

Hi All,

We currently have 2 Win2K8 R2 servers running terminal services. On both of these is a system we have installed for end clients.

Now it has been working fine for a few months, but i have noticed recently on one of the servers that two user processes (one is called dtrieve.exe - program which is relevant to the system we have installed, the second is csrss.exe) are still present in the RDS Manager and in the task manager. Im led to believe these two programs are left on the system due to application hangs.

The only way i have found to clear these processes, as there are over 20 users who have these two processes linked to them even though they are not logged on is to reboot the machines. I have tried numerous cmd commands and powershell commands to no avail.

What i wanted to know is, to prevent the one .exe program from being hung by the looks of it, would it be better to have a logoff script to taskkill this process upon user logoff (which is should be doing already but its not), add in a scheduled task or should i add in the registry keys for enabling AutoEndTasks for all users (only query i had was this was will it quit the tasks upon user logoff and not shutdown)?

I have attached some pictures below to make what i have mentioned a bit clearer.

Web Access connection questions regarding new 2012 R2 RDS Farm

$

I am currently in the process of deploying a new RD Farm, and I’ve got a few questions in relation to its configuration. I currently have a gateway server and two connection brokers configured for HA on our internal network. Both of the connection broker servers also have the web access role. The gateway FQDN is remote.domain.com, and the DNS round-robin of our connection brokers is rdfarm.domain.com. We have a pair of Kemp load balancers in our DMZ that I plan to use to send traffic to the internal RD gateway.

How exactly do I get the web access to work with the gateway server? I don’t see any type of landing page or forwarding being done by the gateway. The only way I see to access the web portal is to go directly to our connection brokers through rdfarm.domain.com/rdweb. Is there a way to have our load balancers direct web access traffic through the gateway, or do we have to send it directly to the connection brokers?

Windows Server 2016 RDS Migration Path

We have a Windows 2012 R2 RDS deployment with Session Hosts published applications and Virtual Desktop collections.

With Server 2016 coming in September has anyone found any documentation (I kind of hear the laughter already) on best practices to migrate from a 2012 R2 RDS deployment to 2016?     I'm assuming we would build new 2016 servers and migrate the roles / upgrade the database.

Event Name: AppHangTransient? event id 1001 remoteapp windows 2012 R2

Im seeing eventid 1001 with Event Name: AppHangTransient for a particular application that we have published with remoteapp. Im seeing this eventid every now and then on the app server.

It is an informational log.  What is this log mean exactly?  Is this caused by the application hanging/freezing? This seems like a dumb question to me, but I have never seen this particular log before. I wanted to confirm.

My main question is, could these possibly cause remoteapp to disconnect and reconnect temporarily?

Thanks.

Licenses are not aviable for the Remote Desktop Session Host

Hello everyone.

I installed remote desktop CAL for 5 users on server 2012 r2 foundation but when I check RD Licensing Diagnoser i got this problem :

The Remote Desktop Session Host server is in Per User licensing mode and No Redirector Mode, but license server simhp3 does not have any installed licenses with the following attributes:
Product version: Windows Server 2012
Licensing mode: Per User

How can I solve this?

Thanks

Local FQDN shown when connecting to Session Host through RD-Gateway

$

Hello,

I'm in the process of deploying remote desktop services for our company to see if it's viable for our situation.
I've got everything working. The only thing that's bugging me is that the local FQDN is show when connecting to a full desktop session host.
I've set the "SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\CentralPublishedResources\PublishedFarms\<Collection>\RemoteDesktops\<Collection>\ShowInPortal" to 1 to show the Remote Desktop Connection shortcut in RD Web Access.

> Server certificates are all published in the RDS deployment properties. (We have bought a wildcard certificate from a trusted CA.)
- RDCB SSO: Trusted & OK
- RDCB Publishing: Trusted & OK
- RD Web Access: Trusted & Error (All services are on single server with HA)
- RD Gateway: Trusted & OK

> RD Gateway specific certificates are also uploaded through the RD Gateway Manager.
> RD Connection Broker HA DNS RR is set to remote.domain.com in the deployment properties.
> RD Gateway server name is also configured to remote.domain.com in the deployment properties.
> RD Gateway HA is configured with NLB on the second NIC of each server, with cluster name also set to remote.domain.com.

I've configured the Gateway RAP to only allow connection to the RD Server Farm through the DNS RR name, being remote.domain.com, which we have also configured in our local DNS server to point to the RDCB.

Now, when I try to connect through RD Gateway, I sometimes get the below error.
Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer "remote.domain.com" for one of these reasons:
1) Your user account is not listed in the RD Gateway's permission list
2) You might have specified the remote computer in NetBIOS format (for example, computer1), but the RD Gateway is expecting an FQDN or IP address format (for example computer1.fabrikam.com or 157.60.0.1).
Contact your network administrator for assistance.

I don't get this error when I open a RemoteApp in the same session.
When I add the farm members (using local server name) individually to the network resources, this works, but then I get the certificate mismatch. (This is also specified on the Network resources tab:Note: if you are using a Remote Desktop Session Host server farm, the name of the farm and the name of each member must be specified in the computer group.)

Name mismatch
Requested remote computer: servername.domain.local
Name in the certificate from the remote computer: *.domain.com

I've searched the internet for days now, but haven't found a solution yet. Or I must be doing something wrong.
Need to note that I've also tried adding the servers to the network resources using a different DNS name (rds01.domain.com, rds02.domain.com), but that doesn't seem to do anything. Then I get the error again (Remote Desktop can't connect...)

Hope I'm missing something here, cause I don't want local server name or IP to be visible.

Terminal Server Windows Server 2008 - Remote Logons Disconnecting

$

I have a handful of remote users that are connecting into our terminal server running 2008.  Here's my problem, within 5 to 10 minutes of idle time, the user gets disconnected from their session.  In Active Directory, the "End Disconnected Session" is set to NEVER, and the Active Session Limit and Idle Session Limit is also set to NEVER.  I also checked the terminal server and there is no Global Policy set to disconnect an idle session.  All the users that are internal to the network do not face this issue.  It's only the ones outside the subnet.  Can anyone enlighten me on other areas that I may be missing.

Side Note:  We initially thought it was our firewall, however, I reconfigured the users thin client and reconnected them to our 2003 server.  That have not disconnected since.  So this leads me to believe it is a security policy some where on the 2008 server.

Server Manager will not display my farm

I have (4) 2012 RDS servers split into 2 session collections with both being managed by the same connection broker/gateway. One farm is "remote desktops" and the other is "remote applciations" (We have some users that use "Dumb terminals" so they get the desktops, and other users who use win7 and 10 and they use the "apps".

Everything worked great until yesterday morning.  Server Manager on my Connection Broker/Gateway server no longer will show my collections.  Only gives me the following on the Overview:

"A Remote Desktop Services deployment does not exist int he server pool.

To create a deployment, run the Add Roles and Features Wizard and select the Remote Desktop Services installation option."

My deployment still works however as users can log in and work as normal.  I just can't manage it.  Trying to create a new deployment errors out as well with "Could not retrieve the deployment information from the RD Connection Broker server.

Any ideas?

2012 r2 Server Manger cannot manage RDS: Collections, Host Servers, and Connections won't display

Hello,

We have a 2012 r2 server running RDS publishing a number of RemoteApps.

When we go to the Server Manager and drill down to the Remote Desktop Services area we are seeing a number of the sections that will not display their information and we can no longer manage RDS via Server Manager.

Starting at Server Manager\Remote Desktop Services\Overview the "Deployment Servers" window shows a red banner with "Could not refresh the list of servers"

Going to the Server Manager\Remote Desktop Services\Collections, all three of the windows, Collections, Host Servers, and Connections will eventually display the similar type of error message, stating to check the status of the services for Remove Desktop Connection, Windows Remote Management and Windows Internal Database.

server manager error

The server is fully patched, event logs don't show anything of note.

We've rebooted the server and confirmed all those services and all "Remote Desktop *" services are running.

We're still able to access the RDWeb instance to use the published applications.

This had been working previously, not sure when it last was though as we don't always go into Server manager. We can manage the remoteapps via powershell, but are curious why Server Manager no longer functions.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

thanks...

Load balancing RDS 2012 farm for individual apps

$

We are designing an RDS farm to adhere to PCI-DSS and one requirement is to have a proper RD Gateway+Web in DMZ and only allowing tcp/443, 3391 thru to the LAN where brokers and hosts reside.  Using RemoteApps, we have about 5 RD hosts each with 10 application folders.  The 50 clients will each run an app specifically assigned to them and they do not share the same folder/EXE with another client.

Is this setup supported especially if I load balance gateway, web, and broker using something like KEMP?  Are there any considerations?

PS: we will be using a wildcard cert.

Thanks for the help

Hello,

I am using Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V with remoteFX enabaled. VDI are running on windows 7 enterprise. the problem i have is that some users when they are using VDIs thru RDWEB they do not logoff and just disconnect their session. this cause problem because we are using folder redirection and roaming profiles so if they have brought any changes it wont update with their profile on file server because the session is just disconnected. I cant find any solution or anything on GPO to force logoff the disconnected session or idle sessions.

Can someone has any idea or solution for this please?

Kind Regards,

Ahmad
