I have a computer on my network that randomly stopped being able to access their account on one of our servers ONLY from her desktop pc. I've check all server side settings recommended here and nothing has helped. On their PC, I deleted the HKEY_loccal.... keys, run mstsc as admin, log in as admin with credentials,, turned off firewall, and even disabled antivirus. Everything end up with the same result.

telnet to the 3389 port worked and connected.

machine is wn7 x64 and the account was accessed from other machined on win 10 and 7 x64

From other laptops or desktops, I can enter their account with out ANY problem.... I'm out of ideas, PLEASE HELP!

Access is Denied - Remote Desktop

I have set up my Server (2008 R2 Foundation) for remote desktop and RemoteApp as per the instructions provided by Microsoft.  I am using a single server for all functions.  When a user logs in to the Server through remote desktop, the remote desktop screen comes up and then the user immediately gets an 'Access is Denied' message.  If the user connects through RDWeb, the RemoteApps are displayed, but when the user clicks on an application, they are prompted again for their login credentials and then they get the remote desktop screen with an 'Access is Denied' screen as well.  This happens even for Administrators.

I am getting very frustrated with this as I have read many blogs and tried everything to no avail.  PLEASE help me.

Outlook 2010 "Server is unavailable" error when starting remote app

All,

I have recently built and configured a new server to run Remote Desktop Services.  It in on Server 2008 R2 Standard 64-bit.

I have published numerous applications (e.g. Adobe, Visio, Project, etc. as well as Office 2010) to the host server.  Everything works with the exception of Outlook 2010 (client of an Exchange 2010 server).  When I or any of my users try to bring it up in the RDS portal, it goes through the normal start-up of any Outlook first use and looks for an existing email account.  As it is trying to load the user profile, an error pops up saying "The server is unavailable."  Clicking "Retry" does not work at all.

When I run Outlook directly from the RDS host server itself, it loads up and runs fine so I know the RDS server can contact the Exchange server.

Any ideas on why the Outlook application works on the host server but will not work when trying to run it through the RDS Web Access portal?

Thanks.

Windows 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services on Workgroup Server

Hello Friends,

We have setup one RDS Server which is having Windows 2012 R2 Installed, this server is not connected to Domain & License Server role also installed on same server, we have 30 User Cals Installed.

After 120 Days of RDS role Installation users were not able to login to server and server was showing error like no license server is available, then we deleted Grace Period registry key and issue resolved. Since all RDS features are not available when server is in workgroup we used local group policy to specify the license sever and license Type.

This issue occurred again after 120 days and then we again deleted Grace Period registry key, issue resolved.

Again after 120 days same issue occurred but this time trick of deletion of Grace Period key is not worked and we are now struck.

Now we are getting below error in RD Licensing Diagnoser console and showing 0 in Number of license available for clients,

The Remote Desktop Session Host server is in Per User licensing mode and No Redirector Mode, but license server xxxxxxxx does not have any installed licenses with the following attributes:
Product version: Windows Server 2012
Licensing mode: Per User
License type: RDS CALs

I am suspecting that this is is happening because RDS role is not supported when server is connected to workgroup and user cals installed. as per multiple articles only Device CALS are supported in Workgroup RDS.

Please suggest...

%CLIENTNAME% in nested RDP sessions

$

Hello,

Scenario: a user from USER-PC connects to Remote desktop Windows 2008 R2 server SERVER-01. In SERVER-01 for that user %CLIENTNAME% is USER-PC. After that inside this remote session he starts to work with RemoteApp from another terminal Windows Server 2008 R2 SERVER-02. And in SERVER-02 for that user %CLIENTNAME% is SERVER-01. I understand, that it should be so, but is there a way to get original %CLIENTNAME% (USER-PC) from that nested session in SERVER-02?

May be is there a way to change %CLIENTNAME% environment variable? I tried "setenv" utility, but seems it does not work with Windows 7/Windows 2008. SetX does not work with volatile environment variables.

Hello,

I have a client running Windows Server 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Services with RemoteApp.

They want to buy some new Printers for PC's, does anyone know of a REMOTE DESKTOP SERVICES EASY PRINT COMPATIBILITY list?

My client would like to buy new printers for use with REMOTEAPP and EASY PRINT does anyone have a compatibility list or can you recommend a printer that will easily and consistently redirect with Remote Desktop Services and RemoteApp?

If anyone knows of a resource online or a list of printers that easily redirect with Remote Desktop Services and RemoteApp please let me know.

Thank you,

(How) Can I change the location of the local profile storage (C:\Users) in a roaming profile RDS environment?

$

Setup:

1 File Server and 2 Terminal Servers (RDS Hosts), 1 Domain

Roaming Profiles are set to \WS2008R2\PROFILES\

Local Profile storage as per default is in C:\Users

Relevant Software:

Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 Standard (64-bit)

Microsoft Outlook 2007 (no Exchange Server)

Problem:

My predecessor didn't calculate enough space for the C:\ drives of both Terminal Servers (RDS hosts). Now with growing user data over the years (in particular their Outlook PST-files) the remaining space is ebbing away due to the saved local copies of the Roaming User Profile in C:\Users.

My First idea was to use folder redirection to redirect the user's "Documents" folders (which contain the Outlook file) to their RDS Home Folders on the network. However, I've been told it is discouraged and not supported by Microsoft to access Outlook PST-files on network shares because it can lead to performance issues (apparently it's been improved with Office 2010 but they use Office 2007).

The easiest solution would be to change the local folder for user profiles (C:\Users), that syncs back to the Roaming User Profile on the file server, to D:\Users, as there is enough free space on that drive. However I haven't found any information on whether and how it is possible or supported.

When I log on as one of the users and check the properties of e.g. "Documents" I can change the path to D:\Users\Documents there but surely the solution can't be to log in as each user and manually set the path for each one (user permission and ACL concerns aside).

Any advice is appreciated

VDI - Using Windows 10 Enterprise cannot shadow VDI sessions

When trying to shadow a virtual machine, we get the following error:

I have seen a number of fixes for this, including enabling the file and print share services, etc

Theses fixes don't seem to work, is there anything else that could be preventing this from working?

Unable to Take more than 2 Remote Desktop Sessions

$

Hi Experts,

I want to take remote desktop sessions from 5 to 10 computers so i just google and found a solution below

  1. Log into the server and open MMC.exe.

  2. File → Add/Remove Snap-in → Group Policy Object → Add → Finish → OK.

  3. Double click Local Computer Policy → double click Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Remote Desktop Services → Remote Desktop Session Host → Connections.

  4. Limit Number of Connections = 999999.

  5. Restrict Remote Desktop Services users to a single Remote Desktop Services session =DISABLED.

I just follow above but unfortunately unable to take remote desktop from more that 2 computers

I also ready that

<<If you want more than 2 concurrent connections your computer is now considered a "Terminal Server" and you must pay for "Remote Desktop Services client access licenses" (RDS CALs) for people to connect.>>

Is Above Statement true ?

Windows 2008 R2 | Remote Desktop Connection Broker in HA on multiple subnet

$

Hello,

Our scenario :

We have multiple Terminal Servers (Windows Server 2008) with for each one two network cards. First NIC is connected to Network A and second one to Network B. There is no Gateway on each network and both are isolated.
We have multiple Domain Controllers with two network cards as well.
We have two pool of clients, one connected to network A and second one connected to network B. Both are actually using the same Terminal Servers.

Our goal :

Migrate our TS to Windows 2008 R2 and use Remote Service Session Host.
To use a high availability broker to simplify connection for the clients, auto-reconnect their session and auto-balance our RDSSH.

What is the best design for this?

I know that one cluster of RD Connection Broker use only one IP, I imagin this design at minimum for the best HA :

Network A :
- 2 servers in NLB for RDSSH redirection farm.
- 2 servers in cluster for RDSCB.

Network B :
- 2 servers in NLB for RDSSH redirection farm.
- 2 servers in cluster for RDSCB.

We want to use the same pool of RDSSH to server clients on Network A and B.
Is it supported ?
Do you have another solution to suggest us?

Thank you in advance for your support.

do we still need hotfix 2655998 to recycle inactive ports as it doesn't download from Microsoft site

Hi

Just come across a 2008 R2 server with over 3000 TS ports - as per - https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/2655998

Just troubleshooting now as it runs fine in the morning then slows to hardly responding as it is used throughout the day.
This was first obvious fix, resource monitor seems ok.

I have run the fixit - which cleared all the ports in registry down to about the 10 being used. but server stil slow

I tried to download the hotfix but just keep getting page not found after agreeing to the blurb.

Does anyone know if this hotfix has been bundled in with a full fix yet - or should I still be running it on 2008 R2 terminal servers

thanks

Server 2012 RDS WinLogon process crashing Event ID 4005

$

We have this issue on many 2012 RDS session hosts. The issue has been seen at different clients with different set ups, some have a simple 1 session host RDS server, some have 4 or 5 session hosts in a load balanced farm with RD gateway, connection brokers, RDWeb, ect. The problem in simplest explanation:

A user will call the help desk saying they cannot access the server. They will get an error when RDP is trying to connect.

We check the session hosts, and will find many errors:

"Event ID 4005 - The Windows logon process has unexpectedly terminated"

At that point in time, users who are currently logged in may be able to still work, or their session may lock up (it is not consistent).

Regardless of the current users logged; after the logon process crashes, it continues to crash upon every user attempt to log on. It will happen indefinitely until the server is rebooted. We can not log in, not even via console until the server is rebooted.

Then, everything works fine for some amount of time (not consistent) it may be a couple of days, or it may be weeks, or a month even.

We have had the case open with Microsoft for about two months and they cannot determine what is wrong.

I believe I may have found a possible cause; Webroot Secure Anywhere antivirus. Since we have tried everything from moving from roaming profiles to local profiles, removing all printers, blocking inheritance of GP, fresh server builds with minimal software, ect - it has to be something that is consistent across the board on all servers.

The only thing I can find consistent across the board is the Antivirus; Webroot.

I am curious if anyone else is having this issue? I would like to pin point this to something but it is so intermittent and we cannot force replicate the problem.

Publishing RDWeb on a different server from host

$

Hi All,

Might be a relatively simple answer, but everywhere i have looked i cant seem to find what im looking for.

I just wanted to know if its possible to host an RDWeb page on a different server besides the one it s currently being hosted on? The reason for this is our RDWeb page provides a service to end clients and if this were to go down on the host machine no-one would be able to login, hence why im asking if its possible to host on a seperate server?

Any help or advice is much appreciated as always.

Why session was disconnected?

$

Is there any way to find in server's logs why session was disconencted? I found in TerminalServices-LocalSessionManager event log entries with event ID 24. But they only inform that session was disconnected. But was it because of network failure, server error or the session was simply disconnected by user?

After MoveWindow API call on RemoteApp window (mstsc.exe) mouse events are not properly propagated to apllication running remotely.

$

Dear All,

We are trying to launch a remote app using mstsc (with the help of RDP file) and controlling the size and position of application using Windows APIs. Resize and reposition happens fine when we use MoveWindow API, but after this mouse events are not properly propagated to RemoteApp. Mouse events on RemoteApp are propagated to older position (before MoveWindow) of application.

Observation steps:

        1. Configured and launched a notepad as RemoteApp using RDP file.

                2. Positioned RemoteApp using MoveWindow API

SetWindowLong(MainWindowHandle, GWL_STYLE, WS_VISIBLE);

Point windowPosition = this.PointToScreen(new Point(0, 0));

MoveWindow(MainWindowHandle, windowPosition.X, windowPosition.Y, this.Width, this.Height, true);

SetForegroundWindow(MainWindowHandle);

NB: Here MainWindowHandle is RemoteApp window handle (mstsc.exe process main handle)

         3. Now we can see RemoteApp repositioned fine but mouse events are not properly propagated to RemoteApp(mstsc.exe)

-    Mouse events we can see a shift in mouse click.

If we manually resize the RemoteApp mouse events are propagating properly. Problem comes when we reposition RemoteApp windows using any one of the Windows API's.

Please let me know if any body come accross this scenario or if any one is having suggestion/openion on this.

Thanks

Bachu
