Set default domain so user does not need to enter it

In RDS 2012 R2, I want to set the domain automatically so the user does not need to remember to type this. I have found a few methods to do this on other forums. One seemed to work, but none of my published apps appeared. They would only appear if I explicitly entered the domain\user.

I'm looking for a way to do this without modifying too much.  I want to prevent changes from being undone after future updates if possible.  Can anyone suggest a good way to do this?

Thanks.

RDS Certificate name mis-match

I have a single server 2012 R2 set up to provide RDS services.  When logging into the server to use RemoteApps, I get the typical message about a mis-match certificate name.  Many articles on Google recommend changing the FQDN using Powershell:

Set-RDPublishedName "sample.domain.com"

I get a Powershell error message that the cmdlet RDPublishedName does not exist.  Seems strange since so many articles recommend this command.  Can anyone suggest what the problem is and a solution?

Thanks!

Limit number of sessions per user or group

Hi.

I´m working on a project where I need to allow multiple sessions ( already done ), but limit the number of concurrent sessions on a RDS farm...

At the moment, we're using only one RDS server ( R&D stage ), but in the future, there'll be a farm with RDS Connection Broker and many RDS Session Hosts.

I've come to the conclusion that the best approach is to create a custom GPO, apply to the RDS Session Hosts, and use a vbscript or powershell to block the logon when the number of sessions reaches the defined limit.

I'd like to achieve a group based ( Groups: 1RDSsession, 2RDSsession and so on ... ) user logon limit. I have some ideas in mind for a single server, and a possible solution for a farm.

But before spending time on this "adventure" ( I really like this kind of challenge :) ), I'd like to know if Windows2012 provides any means for doing this kind of control.

I know there's a per server sessions limit, but that doesn't solve my problem.

Thanks in advance!

multiple RDS farms using a single connection broker?

Hello, Currently ruuning a 2008 R2 RDS farm with a single connection broker. All is working well.

Is it possible to have another seperate farm managed by the same connection broker and only give access to a select AD group of users?

thanks for your help

Can a single 2008 R2 Session Broker server manage multiple RDS farms? If so, How?

All,

Thank you for your time.

My question is do you know of any MS documentation that shows how to properly set this up?  I understand the implementation process of standing up a RDS farm but I am having an hard time finding any official documentation for implementing a single session broker that manages multiple farms. Would you have any information that explain how to setup a single connection broker that manages multiple RDS farms on Server 2008 R2?

Any help or links would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

RDS Server 2016 RemoteFX - Nvidia Grid K1 - no improvement

$

I have gotten a server set up with Windows Server 2016 TP4, and deployed RDS on the server. I installed several applications that use several different rendering technologies (including OpenGL), and I am seeing no difference from RDS 2012 R2, even though I have enabled 1Gb of RAM for the graphics. The video card shows up on the client VM as Microsoft RemoteFX Graphics Device - WDDM, and is not recognized by any of the applications as a compatible card, so they have problems with hardware acceleration. For example, AutoCad 2016 does not allow me to enable hardware acceleration because it says my graphics card is not compatible. It is the same experience that we get when using RDS on Windows Server 2012R2.

On the server, we are running an Nvidia Grid K1, which is the top recommendation from Microsoft. I was not able to install the latest Nvidia driver, because it says the OS was not compatible. The only driver I was able to install successfully looks like it was from 7/2/2014 - 340.52. This is the only thing I could think of that would not allow RemoteFX to function properly. If this is most likely the cause of the issue, any information on a workaround would be great. I have tried to manually install the driver through Device Management, but it says that the driver is not compatible also.

I know my question is not specific, but I'm hoping that if nothing else, Microsoft becomes aware that the advertised improvements in 2016TP are not working - at least in our environment. I would have thought there would have been much more documentation about workarounds that might be required for the Grid K1, since that is the top recommended card, but I found nothing - Nvidia doesn't even mention 2016TP. My thought is that if the issue is the graphics driver, then Microsoft would have had to work closely with Nvidia on the driver, and there would be documentation somewhere.

I have been looking forward to the RemoteFX improvements in 2016 for many months, so it is pretty disappointing that I'm not seeing any change in performance.

Windows 10 VDI collection on Windows 2012 R2

Just a quick question about VDI collections on Windows 2012 R2 RDS. Are they still restricted to Windows 7 and Windows 8 or is it possible to run a Windows 10 collection now?

Obviously Windows 10 can run on Server 2016 but until this is fully released I have a few customers that have enquired about deploying Windows 10 from their current 2012 R2 environments.

Thanks in advance.

Kind Regards

Win2008R2 SP1 Application crashes when enumerating DLL functions via tlbinf32.dll

Hi,

I need to investigate some IT environmental problems in our Terminal server environment. We ourself don't manage this, it's a contractor that deals with all of the IT stuff. It must be some influence from GPO or virus scanner etc, becasue the problem occurs also on a clean VM they made for testing purposes. Because that new VM still follows the rules of the managed environment I think this is a systematic problem and not a coding error - if I install Windows 2008R2 on my own test machine I don't see this problem.

The problem itself:

in our "managed" productional environment we have an application we develop by ourself. The application has a Richtext editor that can help VB scripting by reading out the "public" functions from two DLL they come with  our applicaiton. The readout is done with the Tlbinf32.dll which is part of the operating system. By doing this the application crashes.

In an "unmanaged" test environment the problem doesn't occur, debugview and process monitor just stop, but don't show any particularities or even errors.

Remote Desktop Services for Server 2012

$

I have a Server 2012 box that we would like to use Remote Desktop on to perform administrative tasks.  IE, install updates to various applications, OS, whatever.  We set the service up and RDP complained that it doesn't have a license. Looking over this document from Overview of Remote Desktop Licensing it appears that we don't actually need a license if we're merely performing administrative tasks.

  • "Remote Desktop supports two concurrent connections to remotely administer a computer. You do not need a license server for these connections."

So I feel like for what I'm trying to do here, I don't need any RDP licenses.  BUT when the user logs into the server to do their tasks, they're told that there aren't any license servers.  So how do I go about setting up the user?

RDP Issues

I am running Windows 10 PRO.

I set up RDP on my host computer.

I downloaded the RDP app and installed it on my ASUS T300FT tablet

If the host and remote tablet are on the same network all works as expected.

If I move the tablet to a different network it cannot find the host computer.

Both the host computer and tablet are connected to the internet.

After failing to connect, I added the Port to the host IP address and it still failed.

I thought that maybe I have a blocked port but I am using Norton Security 2016 and it works on the same Network but not when both items are on different networks.

Thanks for any help given.

W2012R2 - Remote desktop - certificate ?

$

Hi,

i have many rds (some with only rdsh role, and others configured with broker)

I just discovered that there's always a certificate for remote desktop.

My pb is that the certificate expire in 3 months and that i never configured this certificate (i don't have any certificat role configured).

Is that something which is managed directly by server ?

Thanks for your help,

Certficate warnings

$

Hi,

I've had some certificate warnings in the past and thought it was a good idea to fix it by assigning my public wildcard certificate to my internal RDSH servers.
as it turned out in this topic https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/6a70ed2e-46af-4891-92ff-c8bab6ec94a3/customrdpproperty-use-redirection-server-name?forum=winserverTS it wasn't that good idea.

So that was rolled back.

But now the certificate warnings are back.
'This certificate is not from a trusted authority'

When I take a look at the certificate that is linked to the RDP-TCP listener it was issued to server1.domain.local and issued by server1.domain.local.
We have an internal CA, but that is currently not set up to provide certificates automatically.

To get rid of these warnings I need to request a certificate from the CA and again change the certificate linked to the RDP-TCP listener. (http://www.vkernel.ro/blog/replace-the-default-self-signed-certificate-on-a-rd-session-host-server)

Or is there a better way?

RemoteApp Login Without domain or UPN

Hello,

We're building and RDS environment and are running into a use issue we don't like.  We're going to serve RemoteApps strictly from the Web interface.  We have the login working without requiring the domain to web but can't seem to get the RDP login to work without requiring the domain.

I've tried to set the customRDP settings but they never make it to the RDP file that is downloaded.

Set-RDSessionCollectionConfiguration -CustomRdpProperty "use multimon:i:0`nusername:s:DOMAIN\"

I've also added to the RDS HA Database and tried the domain custom property as well.  Nothing seems to work.

I followed these directions for the web, and they worked great: msfreaks.wordpress.com/2014/07/22/properly-removing-the-domain-prefix-requirement-from-rd-web-access-2012-r2/

Does anyone know if it's possible to get this to work?

How to change password in RDP session

In my situation all RDP clients are remote over the internet. their passwords expire every 60 days. How can the user change their password before it expires? CTRL ALT DEL will not work because it takes you to a password change on your local machine. Note the users have no access to a desktop only a single application is forced to run through the user profile.

Deployment Properties - Select Existing Certificate

We are building a Remote Desktop Services environment using Windows 2012 R2 servers.

What is the significance of "Apply the certificate that is stored on the RD Connection Broker server" option in "Select Existing Certificate" dialog when configuring "Role Service" certificates?

It seems that Remote Desktop Services can be configured using the Server Manager from any domain member server so why the emphasis on RD Connection Broker server?

Thank you in advance.

2012 RDS farm - 1 CB and 2 RDSH - General question to understand the difference between 2008 RDS and 2012 RDS

$

All,

I am trying to get a new 2012 RDS farm up and running.  The setup I am going for is a 3 server setup with 1 Connection Broker and 2 RDSH servers.

My question is does the 2012 CB behave the same way the 2008 Dedicated Redirector did?  Meaning should the farm point (DNS) to the 2012 Connection Broker and does it forward the connection request to the RDSH servers?

Remote Desktop Gateway Denying Connections

$

I have configured a simple RDS setup using the step-by-step guides from Microsoft with the only exception being that I used certs from an Enterprise CA instead of the self-signed certs the guide uses.  I have configured the following setup:

RDWA -> RDG -> RDCB -> RDSH

I have no problems logging into the RDWA server, but whenever I click on anything, I get the following error:

Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer "RDG.domain.com" for one of these reasons:

1) Your user account is not authorized to access the RD Gateway "RDG.domain.com"

2) Your computer is not authorized to access the RD Gateway "RDG.domain.com"

3) You are using an incompatible authentication method (for example, the RD Gateway might be expecting a smart card but you provided a password)

Contact your network administrator for assistance.

Right now, on the RDG server, I have two basic policies, a CAP that allows passwords and the Domain Users group, and a RAP that allows Domain Users to connect to any network resource.  On the RDG I'm also seeing the following entry in the event log:

Network Policy Server denied access to a user.

Internet Explorer on 2012 R2

Hi all,

I have set up a 2012 R2 server with RDS.  Recently, when we try and browse portal.office.com (or any other Office 365 site) using Internet explorer 11, we get a blank page.  It works fine with Chrome no problem.

Here is what I have tried up to now:

  • Uninstall IE 11
  • Reset all Internet Explorer Settings
  • Add all Office 365 related websites as Trusted sites (also tried as intranet site)

I am at a loss and do not know what can be causing this.

Any clues?

Thanks in advance,

Michael

Managing 2012R2 RDS Collections with Win10 RSAT

$

So, i recently upgraded my workstation to win10 and installed the RSAT Tools für Win10.

Since then the Remote Desktop Services Tab in Server Manager doesnt show RDS Collections anymore.

I tested this on 2 other win 10 machines (not showing up) and a few win 2012 r2 servers (collections do show up).

Whats the deal? What do I need to get my collections to show up again?
