2012R2 RDS Completely Stuck, users cant login saying RDS is busy

Hey Everyone,

Rather strange issue we've run into in the past month or two. I just submitted a case to MS about the issue, but I'm curious if anyone here has seen this.

Environment: 5 2012R2 RDS Servers, up to date with all updates. Clients - Win 7 all up to date. Users have roaming TS profiles.

In late december, we started to see an issue where RDS servers seem "stuck", and nobody can log into them. A user will sit and wait at the RDP login screen 'Please Wait for User profile Service' indefinitely. It's not that logins are slow, they don't work at all. Even administrators can't login (RDP, RDP console, local console). The only way to 'unstick' a server is to hard-reset it. Users can log in again, but typically only for a day or two.

We noticed in January that certain users seemed to be causing the issue. When user John Doe would log into a server (often unsuccessfully), that would 'lock' a server, and then nobody else could login (as per my description above). As such, we deleted all users roaming RDS profiles. This seemed to 'fix' the issue for 3-4 weeks, but has returned today.

We've researched this issue to death! Lots of forum threads about 08R2 having this issue, but also lots of hotfixes. Apparently in 08R2 this is caused by filesystem deadlocks. Lots of people seem to have this issue with 2012R2 as well, but very little information and very few hotfixes. Most of the threads go nowhere and have no apparent fixes. We keep peoples RDS profiles very small (most under 5-20MB), so it's not like these profiles are very large. When the farm is working properly, most people can login completely within about 10 seconds).

We've seen a couple hotfixes that seem related to this issue, but none of them have worked (3047296, 3053667). We've installed all Windows updates (Except February 2016), but nothing has resolved this issue. The farm was working fine for about 8 months in up to december when we started to see this issue.

We built entirely new RDS servers from scratch mid-january. That did not fix the issue.

Event logs are pretty clean. The only major errors are group policy taking too long to apply. Again, logins aren't slow when this happens, they dont workat all. You can sit and wait all day the the 'please wait for user profile service' screen.

We've also tried the usual group policy settings (detect slow network connections, wait for network at startup, synchronous/asynchonous login, etc), nothing has helped.

There's a few other threads with seemingly similar issues, but no real fix.

Thoughts? The only hunch I have so far is it's somehow user profile or group policy based. But again, we keep profiles clean and small.

RemoteApp (Word) Send mail to Outlook is not working because outlook is not active

Hi,

When we start a Remote App from RDS, for example Word, and we use the option to send a document to e-mail as attachment the problem occurs that the mail is not send. It stays in the Outbox of Outlook UNTIL you open Outlook on RDS. Then the mail in outbox is send.

How is can we solve this without opening Outlook?

Thanx and Best regards,

Connectivity issue from only one computer

Let me start by saying i have 10 servers and about 15 workstations on this network. only one computer (my main computer) has this issue. all other computers work as they should.

This problem started to happen recently and randomly affecting RDP connections to 2 of 10 servers and now affects 5 of 10 servers. I am not sure i did anything to make the problem worse. Additionally I at first suspected it a DNS issue as connecting to the ip address of effected computer as opposed to host name allows connection but as I said the issue is only on one computer. Looking at the logs below i am stumped.

Remote Control, Require user's permission, unselected checkbox does nothing.

Running Windows Server 2008 SP1 x64 as server machine.

All clients are running Windows 7 SP1 x64.

I am logged into Terminal Services as an administrator.

User is logged into Terminal Services as a user.

User is set up to enable remote control and "Require user's permission" is NOT checked.

I go to Terminal service manager and "remote control" user.

User is STILL asked for permission to remote control their session.

I can connect and it works fine, but wish to get rid of the permissions box.

Not a huge issue since it still connects, but why have the options box there if it does nothing?

Windows Server 2012 RDP: User Profile cannot be loaded

I have done a fresh install of Windows Server 2012 R2 and did only the following configuration steps.
I have added a user and added the user to the preconfigured group of remote desktop users.

Now if I try to login with the created user the following error occurs:

Windows cannot log you on because your profile cannot be loaded

The Windows Log got Warnings like:

    Source  \\?\C:\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\System Tools\computer.lnk
    Target  \\?\C:\Users\user.RS001055\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\System Tools\computer.lnk
    Error   Access Denied

There are at least 10 Warnings in which the System tries to copy files from the Default user to user.RS001055 and 10 warnings in which the System tries to copy files from the TEMP profile.

I am not sure if

    \\?\
in the beginning of the path is correct.
Furthermore the folder

     C:\Users\user.RS001055

does not exist. There is a folder called

    C:\Users\user

It also does not matter if I add the user to the usergroup of administrators - I get the same error.

The machine is virtualized  (KVM).
Thank you!

RDS applications not visible

I've been all over the internet for several days. Working from my local server only. When I launch rdweb and log in there are no published applications visible. I've checked all policy groups to make sure RDS server is a member and full rights. I've checked my domain firewall. I have no event errors. Please help I'm at wits end. I've read many threads and followed the suggestions but no solution. Thanks in advance.

Remote Desktop Web Gateway and multiple RDS Farms

I'm setting up a 2012R2 RDS farm that will include a Web Gateway, or possibly a Web Gateway cluster. In the end, I will end up having multiple RDS farms set up. Is it possible for a single RDS Web Gateway or Web Gateway cluster to be the web gateway for multiple RDS farms and route users to the appropriate farm based on their group membership, rather than having a separate Web Gateway or Web Gateway Cluster for each farm?

Idle Timeout on reconnected sessions not displaying correctly

Hi all,

I'm running into a problem with idle timeout not being displayed correctly in the Connections-overview.

As soon as the connection is disconnected, the idle-counter starts running.

When I reconnect, however, the idle-counter keeps running, instead of being reset to 0.

Reconnect is done from the same machine, same Client IP-address.

Connection is made through an RD Gateway-server.

Issues with RDS Virtualization Host deployment - Server 2016 TP4

I am attempting to create a RDS Virtualization Host deployment on a Windows Server 2016 TP4 Server core install using powershell.

I'm using the following command to achieve this:

New-RDVirtualDesktopDeployment -ConnectionBroker $serverName -WebAccessServer $serverName -VirtualizationHost $serverName

where $servername is the FDQN of the system. Everything seems to install except for webaccess. I have tried manually installing Webaccess after the fact using:

Install-WindowsFeature RDS-Web-Access and this fails saying that it cant find the source.

I then tried looking for the winsxs folder under the install media. This doesn't seem to contain the installer for this. I'm not sure what I'm missing here.

Thanks in advance,

Dustin

Strange values for Idle and Disconnect Time in Server Manager - Session Collection

Hello,

I see strange behaviour for Idle Time and Disconnect Time in Server Manager Session Collections.
When a user connects to a Session Collection then there is no value for Disconnect Time and Idle Time. Thats ok.

But when disconnection it i get some that look like the first (top) blue box, which is normal behavior, however i also get several users on different servers that get the secon blue box (bottom) - how can they have an active session state, be disconnected and idle????

I have 19 RDSH in the collection and the issue is on every server, i have tried building new RDSH and using it - sam result, i've disabled alle GPO settings regarind Remote desktop, handeling all setting in the collection properties.

I have 2 RG GW, with Web access and HA RDCB on RDG's. All servers are Windows Server 2012 R2 VMs in Hyper-V.

Change RDS 2012R2 authentication to username@domain.com

Good Day,

We recently completed an Office 365 migration. Our end users login to Office 365 with their UPN asusername@domain.com. Our RDS 2012R2 environment is currently set for UPN  as domain\username. I would like to make them consistent so that RDS will accept eitherusername@domain.com or domain\username.

Is this possible?

Thank you!

Windows Server 2012 R2 - Host - Remote Desktop

Desired result (should be fairly simple-NOT):  I need to access my server via Windows Remote Desktop via VPN from remote locations.  I can VPN to the machine just fine.

  1. The Server is set with a Static IP.  Connected to my AT&T router.  This router is configured with DHCP, IPv6 enabled, and allows me to assign the Static IP's to either of my two computer.
  2. An address pool is setup with a pool of 3 static IP's. I have 5 total [1 for server, 1 for personal PC, 3 for pool on server]
  3. Group Policies, Remote Desktop all set and enabled.
  4. Remote Access Management Console
  5. I can see in Remote Access Mgmt Console the user is connected, and one of the static IP's are assigned. Authentication = MSChapv2
  6. Also in Remote Access Mgmt Console under the domain name it shows:  VPN [Services - Big red X with Operations status & state showing Critical& Services State respectively.

Remote Access Error:  The following error occurred in the Point to Point Protocol module on port:  VPN3-127, UserName XXX.  The connection was prevented because of a policy configured on your RAS/VPNserver.  Specifically the authentication method used by the server to verify your user name and password may not match the authentication method in your connection profile.  Please contact the Administrator of the RAS server and notify them of this error.

  • I've triple checked NPS to make sure the policy was enabled and to grant access for VPN-Dial Up, DHCP and RGateway
  • All are set with PEAP and/or EAP-MSCHAPv2

The other related error:

The address of remote RADIUS Server xxxx in server group VPN-access resolves to Local address xxx, and will be ignored.  THis is listed twice.  Once each for IPv4 and IPv6 address.

Again my goal:  Very simple - Provide remote access to my server.  I can VPN in, but am blocked with Windows Remote Desktop.  Actually tried Chrome RD also. Same results.  This is a new server setup and the only thing on the Server besides the operating system. Is SQL Server.

I will be eternally for any an all help!

Deployment Properties - Select Existing Certificate

We are building a Remote Desktop Services environment using Windows 2012 R2 servers.

What is the significance of "Apply the certificate that is stored on the RD Connection Broker server" option in "Select Existing Certificate" dialog when configuring "Role Service" certificates?

It seems that Remote Desktop Services can be configured using the Server Manager from any domain member server so why the emphasis on RD Connection Broker server?

Thank you in advance.

Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server Event ID 20499

I keep getting Event ID 20499 "Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server \\SERVERNAME for user USERNAME" in our event logs for multiple servers that are running 2012 R2

I noticed that when this happens the user often is missing items that get applied via group policies such as desktop wallpapers and mapped drives.

I am also using the Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac that was release yesterday on another Mac computer and for certain users it won't launch the redirected folder that I specified when I get this Event ID 20499

Potential issues with connection broker

hello

I have 4 rds servers on windows 2008 server 2008 r2 datacentre in a farm with a single connection broker. I've noticed a couple of times when doing maintenance (removing IE temp files) servers cannot be connected to. once the servers come back up and I try to connect to the farm, there may be one server which doesn't get connected to. I haven't made any changes to the logon mode or any other configuration chance that would cause this behaviour. the only way around this is to restart the trouble server then I can connect to it again. any ideas?

regards,

Users are able to login to RDSH 2012 R2 servers with multiple sessions even though it is selected to prevent it.

We have a situation where users are able to login to RDSH 2012 R2 servers with multiple sessions even though it is selected in the collection properties to prevent multiple sessions.  We want the user to be able to login from one thin client and then be able to login to a different thin client and the session just pick up where the last one was at with out logging back in.  This is working fine at other locations, trying to identify what is different or what would prevent or over rule it.

Using RR and a collection on a 2012 R2 broker.

Thin clients are set to use RR from their ini.

Server Manager shows BPA error regarding license server

$

Hi,

I have a server topology existing of two remote desktop servers and one server acting as session broker and license server. Everything seems to be working as expected and have for quite a long while, but the Server Manager reports an error regarding licensing.

It tells me the license server has to be activated before I can install client access licenses for our remote desktop servers.

Here are some images I seem to not be able to insert in the post: http://imgur.com/a/ISsk8

I can't seem to get this error to disappear, because the license server is activated and I can see that the servers are using it as the license server and licenses are assigned to users just this morning. Not all logged in users are showing up as having a license assigned to them though.

The RDS distribution group is set to use this license server, and I have tried to find errors with Event ID 1130 and 1128 in the event log as I have seen these should report missing license server and grace periods, these errors can not be found.

How can I get rid of this error? Is it critical and might become a problem for users to logon suddenly? Everything looks normal to me and have no idea what more to check to resolve this error.

Thanks.

Stopping creation of shortcuts/folders when logging in with new user account

Currently running Windows Server 2008 R2 standard with terminal services (remote desktop) installed.

All users currently have their directories (documents, start menu, pictures etc..) setup as folder redirection through GPO settings as we are providing a service to external clients hence the reason for all users sharing the same start menu configuration.

Got a very small issue whereby any new user accounts we create, the system keeps recreating certain shortcuts in the start menu redirected folder which i don't want it to do. It namely keeps creating 'internet explorer' shortcut, 'administrative tools folder' (which is empty) and 'accessories' folder which just has the 'internet explorer no add-ons' shortcut inside that.

Is there a way i can stop this from re-creating these shortcuts as i have to delete them from the redirected start menu folder every time a new user is created?

Thanks

Can't log off or reset a user's session from Remote Desktop Services Manager

$

Occasionally we have users on our RDS servers who have a "frozen" session.  We are unable to reset, log off, or disconnect their session using Remote Desktop Services Manager.  The only way we can resolve the issue is to wait until after hours and reboot the RDS server.  This causes some challenges and leaves the user who needs their session ended waiting until after hours for resolution.  We've run on 2003 terminal servers for years and never had this issue.

Does anyone know of a resolution?
