Multimedia redirection causes wemb video to freeze.

Multimedia redirection through RDP is great for video playback when browsing the web over RDP, but if the video is a WEBM "gif" like those hosted on gfycat.com or imgur's gifv format, as soon as the multimedia redirection "kicks in", the video freezes. If I scroll, I can see the gif playing under the frozen frame. This happens in any browser. Multimedia redirection works fine for youtube and other video streaming sites. I don't want to turn off multimedia redirection completely because it is very useful for all the videos it DOES work with.

2012 R2 RDS Temporary Profile issue

I have set up a standard 3 node 2012 R2 RDS for testing. All virtualized on VMware ESXi 5.0. I have a connection Broker, session host, and web access server. I have published several applications and I can access them without a problem. Here is my issue:

When I try to log on to my session host server either locally or thru RDP, I am always logged in with a Temporary profile. It does not mater what user account I use. Even logging on locally as the administrator I get a temporary profile.

All windows updates are installed and current.

I have removed the server from the domain, deleted the account, and rejoined it to the domain.

I have deleted all .bak registry entries from here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

There is a hotfix here for a similar issue on 2012 but it does not apply to 2012 R2

The only event viewer errors are:

1515 (Windows has backed up this user profile. Windows will automatically try to use the backup profile the next time this user logs on.)

1511 (Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.)

Any suggestions to resolve would be greatly appreciated.

usrlogon.cmd

Hi,

On our terminal services server, every time a user logs in, the usrlogon.cmd window pops up and prevents logging on until it has been closed down. I have disabled the command prompt which i'm guessing is why this usrlogon.cmd window pops up but is there any way i can hide it during the logon process?

I have seen numerous threads that adjust a registry key to run a batch file or executable or override the userlogon.cmd window. If anyone could shed some light on this, it would be much appreciated.

Hasan

Certificate issues with terminal services

I keep getting the annoying warning below when trying to connect to our terminal servers.

Scenario:

We have two TSs; TS1 and TS2.

TS1 is the gateway.

I have a GPO where I (think) push the certificate policy out to the users.

TS1 does have the role Certificate Authority.

It does not matter which TS the gateway directs the user, TS1 or TS2, the certificate warning pops up.

Certificate warning:

The identity of the remote computer cannot be verified.

The certificate is not from a trusted certifying authority.

Thanks in advance for any help.

"Remote Desktop cannot verify that this server belongs to the same farm" for one client machine only

I have four servers participating in a RDS farm. One server acts as the web and Connection Broker and the other three are Session Hosts. All servers are Windows 2012 R2. The workstation is one of our few remaining XP Pro SP3 machines.  The RDS client has been updated to the most current version
I have published a number of different kinds of RemoteApps in a single collection which works well.  At any given time there are between 20 and 80 sessions in use.  I have one user who gets the following message when attempting to connect from his machine.  I get the same message when I attempt to connect from his machine as well with my admin account.

As I said, this farm gets pretty heavy use and his is the only case that I am aware of where this happens. I assume it must be a case of mistaken identity in terms of the API and the error it's throwing.

The logs for the Session Broker service show the connection as received and successfully processed.

Any ideas?

Thanks

How to properly disable User Profile Disks

I have a customer that is currently using User Profile Disks in their Windows 2012 R2 RDS environment.  They would like to eliminate the use of UPD's entirely and go back to the use of standard profiles & folder redirection.  I cannot find documentation of this anywhere.

What is the proper way to migrate away from User Profile Disks? Can I do this without having to recreate all the user profiles? Also, is it possible to eliminate UPD's from specific users as a test without impacting the full user population prior to doing so for everyone?

Just to clarify, I am not asking about how to recreate a UPD.  Rather I am asking about eliminating the use of UPD's entirely.

Thanks!

Remote Desktop Access Blurry image at full resolution

Hi Guys, Recently i have upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10 Professional. When I am using Win 10, the resolution of Remote Desktop (to my Windows Server 2003 R2) is blurry at full resolution at 2560 x 1440 / full screen. The resolution is only ok if i scale it back to 1920 x 1200. Please see screen capture images below. When I was using Win 7, I have no issue with the Remote Desktop access resolution at full monitor resolution. There was no change of monitor, GPU or server equipment (hardware and software) before the upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10 Professional. Appreciate any advise. Thank you very much.

Cheerios,

Dom.

RDS 2012 R2 RemoteApp - RDSH member of two Deployments?

$

Hi all

Thinking about Business Continuity/DR....

Here's a question, can the same RDSH server be part of two individual deployments?

Scenario: two buildings, two individual RDS deployments D1 and D2.  Can D1 and D2 point to the same RDSH servers?

RDWeb/RDCB/RDLS could be created within each D1 and D2 buildings.  RDSH servers could be located by Collection across buildings.  So two identical Collections (providing the same services) exist for each Collection, one in D1, another in D2 - Collection name could be postfixed <D1/D2> for users to identify with.  Individual DNS names could be used, d1.mydomain.com and d2.mydomain.com to point to their respective building locations.

During DR (D1 building power failure/loses internet connectivity etc), users can still immediately access d2.mydomain.com and the appropriately named Collection for the site that's still operational.

Any thoughts?

Perhaps the simper solution is to NLB both RDWeb and RDCB between buildings, but my understanding is that NLB across WAN is not supported due to latency etc.  Maybe DNS round robin has found an application (although understandably not automatically fault tolerant requiring some admin intervention) and may relieve the need for two independent Deployments?

Cheers

Lea

RDS and Office Online Accounts

I have a ticket system which can store attachments including word and excel docs.  The ticket system is being accessed via RDS on a 2012 R2 server.  Each user has an office online account.  Can I open the attached excel and word docs on a RDS server directly into office online for that user?  I am trying not to have to to purchase Office E3 for $20 bucks a head.

If not, will something like Google apps be able to do this versus the $$ racket MS wants?

WIndows Server 2008 R2 RemoteApp Gateway

Hi Guys,

I just have a question on something I would like to implement in my environment.

I have about 200 users and 1x RDWEB server publishing numerous RemoteApps being used by the users in the company currently. I done some research on a broker server and load balancing but don't think this is the whole solution i will need.

What I need is one gateway server https://start@mydomain.com/Rdweb the users will access and 2x RDWEB hosts "Farm1 and Farm2". I would like to group the users between Farm1 and Farm2 for example "Domainuser1 is in Domaingroup Farm1 and Domainuser2 is in Domiangroup Farm2, if Domainuser1 logon and access a RemoteApp he will automatically be redirected to the Farm1 Host and if Domainuser2 login and access a RemoteApp he will then be redirected to Farm2 Host" Instead of the system to load balance the connections I want the system to redirect the connection to where it is configured to go.

Then I can group my high resource applications on one host and the other host the low resource applications and one gatewayhttps://start.mydomain.com/Rdweb for ease of access for the users.

Will really appreciate it if there is someone that can assist me on this.

Thank you

Idle RemoteApp Sessions May Only Be Logged Off by Killing Session's LogonUI.exe Process

$

Good Morning -

We recently introduced RemoteApp into our environment and are having a single, but annoying issue.  If a user keeps a session open overnight or extended period of time, it freezes and they may no longer use it or any other RemoteApp resources.  In the RemoteApp Management console, the user is listed as "Disconnected."  Choosing to log them off doesn't do anything.

The only way we've found to force logging off their user is by opening Task Manager on the RemoteApp server, adding a column to show Session IDs, and Ending Task on the LogonUI.exe process for their session.

What makes things worse is that our HelpDesk team are the ones who should be doing this, yet they do not have access to the RemoteApp server therefore are escalating all requests.  Below are some of the things I've tried other than killing LogonUI.exe to resolve the issue:

  • Right click on session and choose "Log Off" in RemoteApp Connections pane (Nothing happens
  • Using qwinsta / rwinsta to list and log off sessions (rwinsta works for active sessions, but freezes at command line for sessions in state listed above)
  • Using PSTerminalServices PowerShell module cmdlets (commands process as if they worked, but session remains)

Has anyone experienced this before and if so do you have any suggestions?  Thanks!

cloning RDS host servers??

$

We have an RDS cluster into which we expect a large influx of additional users.

Is it possible and acceptable to simply clone one of the existing RDS hsst servers with a different name and SID, then add it to the RDS farm??

Are there any special considerations, pitfalls, or 'gotchas' involved that we should plan for??

All the servers in the RDS farm are running Win2k12 R2, fully patched, on vSphere 5.5.

Thank you, Tom

I have a customer who bought 0C19612 (Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Service) but needs to downgrade to 2008 - This is a Lenovo OEM part number.

We directed to them to the activate microsoft account

However, they have responded by saying 'I've been pointed to this site before when I've attempted to install the licenses - as when I try it on the Server, I still receive "Invalid License" There is no option on this page for me to downgrade'

Can you please advise

Thanks

RDS 2012R2 - Licensing server SPF?

Hi All

Am I correct in thinking if the TS licensing server cannot be reached, RDS will utilise some type of temporary license?

If so for how long?

Mouse clicking script

Hi,

I want to run a mouse clicking script (on a schedule) to automate some tasks for me.

I set up a VDI with Azure, and set up the script (using Auto Mouse Click from Murgee).  It runs great while I am actively logged in to the RDP session and watching it happen. if I close my RDP window/connection, the script will still run, but the mouse clicks do not happen. Is there a setting for this behavior? or do I need a different solution?

thanks!

RemoteApp Pop-under or Swap focus

$

Windows Server 2012R2 Remote Desktop Session Server with Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015 R2 published -

When running the Remote App for Dynamics, on some computers, some pop-up windows (such as the login window) pop up but immediately loose focus to the main window (and therefore end up underneath the main window).  Not all pop-up windows behave in this fashion.

Other computers seem to behave as expected (without loosing focus/popping under).  The main difference that I observe is that so far, all domain connected computers exhibit the pop-under behavior while all non-domain computers do not.  All the domain computers are Windows 7 Pro, the non-domain computers including Windows 7 Pro, Windows 8 (not sure if Pro), and Windows 10 Home.  In comparing the Windows 7 domain (with the issue) and the Windows 7 non-domain (without the issue), it appears both are fully patched, although I show more patches on the domain machine.  At this point, my assumption would be that this was some sort of security setting that happens to be tripped by settings related to the domain, but I'm not sure what settings to start looking at.  I would appreciate any advise as to settings to check or other recommended courses of action.

I have tried the hotfixes related to KB2384602 and KB296832, neither shows as applicable to my system.
