Frenz,

I have created a VM based farm with 03 Servers (2 for Virtualization Host and 1 for RDCB and RDWA).

I have created master image from Windows 8 Client OS (4GB RAM & 50GB HDD) using a static IP address and a Virtual desktop pool based master image.

Desktop VM's are successfully deployed, but how to assign IP address for the VM's during provision itself, since I don't have any DHCP in place.

Kindly Help.

Hi all,

I have a strange problem with Windows Server 2012 R2 Terminal Services RemoteApp.

When a user closes an application must be session on the Terminal Server are immediately logged out. Now it takes 20 seconds before the session is logged off.

I have read the followd article: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2007/09/28/terminal-services-remoteapp-session-termination-logic.aspx and i have changed some settings in the GPMC.

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Terminal Services\Terminal Server\Session Time Limits set toImmediately

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Terminal Services\Terminal Server\Session Time Limits set toImmediately

It still takes 20 seconds before the session is logged off, how can i fixed this?

We use RemoteApp to access to a line of business app.  I have 1 user (of 40) that gets the error in the subject line when she attempts to connect from home using her personal laptop.  Using the same laptop from work connects flawlessly.  I must be missing something simple....but I cant for the life of me figure this out.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Connection Issues with RemoteApp 2012 R2

I have a problem with user connecting to a new RemoteApp environment.  The clients are Windows 7.  We have a broker, gateway, and 2 session hosts.  When a user launches an RDP file to connect, it prompts for credentials a few times saying that the logon failed.  If you close that and keep launching the file, it will connect.  Has anyone else ever seen this?

Best, Jacob I'm a PC.

Remote application appears magnified on some devices

<p>In testing RDS on multiple devices with different screen sizes and resolutions I have found that sometimes the application I run appears 'larger than life' on the screen.&nbsp; Often times it appears as if it set to display at 2X the normal size.  Below is a snip of what my outlook normally looks like running on my workstation.  The second image is the remoteapp version of outlook running on the same workstation.

When I run outlook via remote app on some of my devices it appears normal where as on others it appears 'larger than life'.  I have been testing RDS on devices as small as my galaxy S4 to a 10" win8 tablet to conventional laptops and desktops.

Has anyone seen this occur in their environment?

RD Gateway and Web Access 2012 R2 Hardware Load Balancing Best Practices

$

Hey all. I've been searching around but can't seem to find a straight answer to a couple questions I have about load balancing RD 2012 R2 (Session Desktops and RemoteApp). I've read a ton of deployment guides from various sites, including ones from hardware load balancer manufacturers, but there doesn't seem to be any Microsoft documentation regarding best practices for RD Gateway/RD Web Access farms in relation to hardware load balancing.

We currently have two hardware load balancers in active/active. We want to do the following configuration:

  • 2 - RD Gateway/Web Access VM
  • 2 - RD Connection Broker VM
  • 2 - RD Session Host VM

It seems some deployment guides say that you should configure your RD Gateways into a Gateway farm, while others say that the hardware load balancer can take care of this. A document from the Azure team regarding RD load balancing mentions setting up both RD Gateway and RD Web Access in a farm (I guess the latter through an IIS farm). Of course, the Azure deployment is most likely due to it being software load balanced.

So, what is the best practice? Is it necessary to place the RD Gateways in a farm, or can the hardware load balancer take care of this? The only actual discussion I found regarding this for 2012 was a comment on this site http://ryanmangansitblog.com/2013/03/31/rds-2012-configuring-a-rd-gateway-farm/

"Just a comment regarding the RD Gateway Farm. It is only there for backwards compatibility to guarantee affinity. When the two connections from the client happen to land on different RD Gateway farm members, the farm feature allows the second gateway to route the client traffic to the first gateway, thereby allowing the two RPC over HTTPS connections to be combined into one TCP connection to the RD Session Hosts. Microsoft does not recommend this configuration due to the scale overhead on the RD Gateways.
You can avoid the issue by simply sticking to a hardware load balancer (i.e. Kemp LoadMaster) or using NLB with affinity."

However, I have no way of verifying this, as I can't find any official documentation from Microsoft on the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Non Microsoft .msi's and install mode

I'm trying to confirm something about msi files and install mode for session hosts.

Everything I am reading always states that msi files from Microsoft will automatically put a session host into install mode and back during installation.  So does that mean msi files not from Microsoft may not do this?

I'm mainly looking for 3rd party programs like Java, flash and reader.  If any msi automatically does it, great.  If that is a setting that isn't guaranteed from non Microsoft sources, is there a way to confirm if the installers they use will put a session host in install mode?

Thanks

Strange values for Idle and Disconnect Time in Server Manager - Session Collection

Hello,

I see strange behaviour for Idle Time and Disconnect Time in Server Manager Session Collections.
When a user connects to a Session Collection then there is no value for Disconnect Time and Idle Time. Thats ok.

But when users do nothing Idle Time doesn't starts to count.

When users disconnects it shows the following:

But when a user reconnects then Ide Time continues to count, even if the user starts to work:

I have three Session Collections and in every Collection it's the same strange behaviour when users reconnects.
Two of these Session Collections consits of two servers each and one Session Collection is a single server only.
One Server for Connection Broker, RDGW and RD Web Access. All servers are Windows Server 2012 R2 VMs in Hyper-V.

Any idea?

Andreas

Change published FQDN for 2012 R2 RDS

I have Windows Server 2012 R2 (single server hosting all the roles for RDS). I'm using RDS for publishing RemoteApps for both internal and external users. External users connect to remote.company.com and I have certificate from public ca (issued to remote.company.com). Active Directory is company.local.

When external users connect through the rds gateway and run remoteapp they receive this warning message that is caused by fqdn mismatch

I tried to use this script to change fqdn to match remote.company.com and it does that but after that external users cannot open remoteapps anymore. Internally they work.

https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Change-published-FQDN-for-2a029b80

I get this error in eventlog:

The user "COMPANY\username", on client computer "xx.xx.xx.xx", did not meet resource authorization policy requirements and was therefore not authorized to resource "remote.company.com". The following error occurred: "23002".

If I change the published fqdn back to rds.company.local remoteapps starts to work again but with certificate error.

How can I fix this?

Remote Desktop Licensing on Windows 2012

Hi All,

I have a remote desktop server on Windows 2012 that I have previously licensed. Now, it is complaining about needing to license it in order to continue services.

When I go to the RD license manager, it shows my server listed as the RD license server with 5 total per-user remote desktop licenses for Windows 2012.

However when I go to the RD Licensing Diagnoser it says the licensing mode for the Remote Desktop Session Host server is not configured. It also says The Remote Desktop Session Host server is within its grace period, but the RD Session Host server has not been configured with any license server.

I am confused as I have already installed the license CALs and they were accepted by the activation wizard. Please advise on what I can do to prevent a shutdown of the remote desktop server.

Thanks,

Problem opening an application from within terminal app

Setup: Server 2008 Enterprise

We have an application that runs as a terminal app. It contains many modules that are called by selecting a menu button. The application is stocked on the network drive T:

When a user selects a module the application calls the module by its path name T:\Module1.exe and opens. We have never had any issues with this until recently when a user clicks the button to open a module an error message appears saying that "T:\T:\Module1.exe cannot be found" which makes sense considering that the drive letter should only appear once.

Has anyone else had issues such as this and if so what kind of fix did you apply?

Thanks,

User Profile Disk using EMC VNX back-end storage

$

We're trying to configure our RD Session Collection to use a CIFS share from our EMC VNX to store the User Profile Disks. However, we're running into an RPC error when trying to create it. After searching here a lot of posts seem to conclude that it can't be done with a non-Windows file server solution (even though this VNX definitely supports SMB 3.0, and is configured to use SMB 3.0). What I don't get is why this MS article mentions "User profile disks can be stored on Server Message Block (SMB) shares, cluster shared volumes, SANs, or local storage."if it really can't be done by using a SAN in the logical way you normally would with a VMware environment: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2012/11/13/easier-user-data-management-with-user-profile-disks-in-windows-server-2012.aspx

This forum post pretty much says the same thing about not being able to use an EMC VNX: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/8bf3ac9a-46a6-41de-b834-fb9832e1e8b0/user-profile-disk-on-emc-vnx-storage?forum=winserverTS One person in that thread mentions using a Windows scale-out file server cluster in VMware vCenter (I'm guessing using a SAN/NAS as the back-end). Is this really the only recourse we have if you want highly available UPD while still using your NAS?

Remote Apps Connection Broker Server 2012 r2 issue Can't remote in. Hung session

$

Hi. Hoping someone can help. Configuring a remote app farm to deliver our application to users all around the country via remote app.

Environment:

3 x physical servers and DAS with failover clustering (hyperv) in place hosting a bunch of Server 2012 r2 VMs.

VMs in question:

1 x VM DC running RDGateway and Web Access

2 x VMs Connection Broker in High Availability

1 x VM  Session Host (many more to come)

2 x VMs SQL Failover for Connection Broker High Availability database

PROBLEM:

After the Remote Desktop Services and High Availability are configured all works fine. Testing the SQL cluster (by shutting down one SQL server) works. Testing Connection Broker High Availability (by shutting down one CB VM) works.

Then I shut all the VMs down and started them all back up, and could not connect via remote app any longer. Error:

Remote Desktop Disconnected.
This computer can't connect to the remote computer.
Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator.

Restarted VMs again, restarted Remote Desktop services. Reinstalled Connection Broker role on both and reconfigured High Availability. Not working. Reinstalled Session Host role on SH server. Nothing worked.

There is a remote session hung that will not allow log off or disconnection. The only way to get this working was to uninstall all Remote Desktop roles from RDGateway, CBs and SHs and recreate the whole Remote Desktop Services from scratch.

Further testing in the same way broke it again. Any idea why this is happening?

Terminal server keep alives issue

$

Hi,

We are having issues with our Windows 2008 terminal server. Users at remote locations often gets disconnected from the session when they are idle for half hour. So we thought of enabling keepalives , set the keepalive interval to 1 min. checked for the continuation packets via wireshark and found to be working as expected..could see packets being sent every minute and there were no user complaints. But all of a sudden.. may be after server restart it breaks and keep alives stop working, users start complaining . What would be the cause for keepalives not working..? Any help in this regard is highly appreciated...

Force "I am using a private computer..." option to be ticked

Hello.

I have built a Remote Desktop Services environment on Windows 2012 R2 servers.  It all works perfectly but I'd like to force the "I am using a private computer..." option to be checked when people open the "Connect to a remote PC" page (/en-us/Desktops.aspx).  I have read various blogs and articles, many suggestion the same or similar approaches, but for me the option is never checked by default.  I have:

1. Changed document.getElementById("rdoPblc").checked tofalse in webscripts-domain.js

2. Set public bool bPrivateMode to true in Desktops.aspx

Is there anything else I need to do?  Am I missing something simple?  I have tried running IISRESET and also restarting the server hosting the Web Access role.  The option is always ticked on the Default.aspx page (RemoteApp) but never on the Desktops.aspx page.

Thanks in advance.

RDS License server - Device/User based CALs and Collection

$

Hi All

My understanding is that licensing mode is selected per Collection.

1.  Can a single RDS license server manage both User and Device licenses?

2.  I think MS Office products are licensed per device, therefore I assume I group all Office products within a single container and set its licensing mode to Device?

We also support W2K3/8-32bit desktops via creating a published RDP file which effectively RDCs into W2K3/8 servers running Terminal Services (for backward compatibility of certain 16-bit apps).

Will two client licenses will be consumed per user, one for RDS 2012R2 and one for the target W2k3 or W2K8 32-bit server?

Any pointers more than welcome.

Cheers
Lea
