Cannot connect to server using remote Apps

$

I can connect to the server using remote desktop just fine. But when I try to launch a published Remote App using the launcher from RDWeb it fails to connect.

I have no idea what may be the problem since I can connect to remote desktop without any problem.

The error message says that it cannot connect for one of the following reasons:

1) Remote access to the server is not enabled

2) The remote computer is turned off

3) The remote computer is not available on the network

1 is the a special setting for remote apps? Considering remote desktop works with no problem

2&3 don't make any sense in this case as I'm using the server

Updating printer drivers for Deployed Printer Connections

Have several printers deployed from a print server 2012r2 using computer policy.

One of them I need to change/test a different driver, the HP universal is not working.

Is it as simple as going to the printer object in the print mgmt console under Printers, going to the Advanced tab in the printer Properties dialog, and selecting the one i want from the list?  And then it will update with background refresh or if i run a gpupdate...

-or-

Should i go to Deployed Printers and remove it from being deployed first as a best practice, then update the driver, and then redeploy it?

Thank you!

Minimum services to run remote desktop web connection?

While I recognize that installing anything to do with terminal services or RDS on a domain controller is not recommended it is my only choice for a very small business that I'm helping out. They have Server 2008 R2 and all they want to be able to do is have a couple of people remote in to their own computers when out of the office. What services are the simplest way to accomplish this? I can't find an answer to something this minimalist anywhere.

Why are there no servers listed in the Add RD Session Host Servers dialog

I was asked to get a cloud server for a client's customers to log onto in an emergency, i.e power failure, theft etc.

I installed all the commensurate roles.   I am at the above mentioned dialog and it is NOT populated.   WHAT populates that?

I have licensing installed and five user Cal's ready to go and installed.   I keep getting there are no licensing servers to handle the request. from any remote trying to connect to it

Any help would be HIGHLY appreciated

Thanks

Remote Desktop Gateway does not work with a particular customer network.

Hi.
I have a Windows 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Gateway solution configured and everything works for everyone from outside but a specific customer network.
My question is, what could this customer have configured in the Firewall for blocking this Https 443 connection. They are able to login to the RDWeb page on our Remote Desktop Gateway solution but when they click on a remote app it just say starting. If the customer use another network it works.

Remote Desktop Gateway 2008 R2 only works with Domain administrator user. Other users get "The logon attempt failed"

Greetings!

We have a Windows 2008 R2 Standard edition running as a remote desktop gateway server for a Windows 2003 R2 Standard Remote desktop Server. It has been up and running for more than three years with no issues until this Monday.

Only the domain administrator user can connect via Remote desktop gateway. All other users get the "The logon attempt failed" error message.

Please note the if the users do NOT use the remote desktop gateway configuration they connect just fine on the terminal server.

Attached below are the security updates that were installed in the weekend before the issue. Uninstalling them had no effect.

It appears to be an issue with RPC over HTTP but I am not sure if any of the updates changed any settings and broke the configuration.

The connection and resource CAPs have not been changed and the users that have issue connecting are still part of the allowed groups.

Please also note that there is no http redirection setup on the IIS server. That was a common issue causing the same error doing my research. This does not seem to apply here.

Using a backup connection that does not utilize remote desktop gateway is not a desirable configuration.

Any insights welcome.

Register DLL For All Users

Hi

I am trying to register a DLL for all users on a 2003 R2 64 bit Terminal Server but so far I am having no joy. I have run through suggestions of using regsvr32 and register commands but am still unsuccessful. I have also done it with Change User commands and tried it in a number of locations that should be available to the user.

It is a dll to link into Word 2010 and works fine under the Administrator account but it isn't available to standard users.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Simon

Default Redirected Drives for RemoteApp

Hi all,

I have an app published in RemoteApp. When the users click on the icon in the RDWeb webpage to launch it, the users need to click "Drives" in order to have their drives redirected. However, I noticed "Printers" is already checked. How can I make "Drives" already checked so the user doesn't have to click it?

Also, how can I restrict the drives to just their C: drive? I've already tried Set-RDSessionCollectionConfiguration in PowerShell but it doesn't work.

Thanks

Victor

VDI in multi forest

Hello everyone,

We have a situation with a Remote Desktop Services with virtual desktops where we are limited in our possibilities. We have a multi forest domain structure with trusts between the forests, some trusts are 2 way trusts, some trusts are 1 way trusts and some forests have no trust at all.

We are trying to implement a RDS solution with virtual desktops, the servers are in domain 1 and the client VDI VM’s are in domain 2. Our question is in which trust configuration is this supported and is there any documentation?

Our consideration is that we are not flexible and we need a hardware cluster for every forest and it’s getting very expensive.

Thank in forward i hope to get a trustful answer.

Kind regards,

Jasper Sybrandy

Using a SAN certificate with RemoteApps for connections outside of the firewall

$

I have two fairly simple two-server farms on the LAN with gateway servers in the DMZ.  (One is 2008 R2 and the other is 2012 R2 in the same configuration) Users connect via the 2012 RD Web Access portal to run the apps on the two farms and all that works fine.  The trouble is that when connecting they get the certificate mis-match warning from the session host that is assigned the connection.  I would like to get rid of that by installing  a SAN/UCC certificate that lists both servers and the DNS of the farm A record so that whichever server gets the connection ca present the cert and authenticate without the warning.

Our internal and Internet domains are the same (pre-dates me)  We maintain our internal DNS and the outside world gets its info from a provider.  The inside hosts do not exist on the outside DNS, which they don't need to anyway. As I said, this configuration functions just fine except for the cert mismatch business.

I bought a SAN/UCC cert through DigiCert:

  • Ensures the identity of a remote computer

Proves your identity to a remote computer

    2.16.840.1.114412.1.1

The subject shows the dns name of the farm host

The subject Alt Name shows all the hostnames:

    DNS Name=rds-farm.myDomain.com
    DNS Name=server1.myDomain.com
    DNS Name=server2.myDomain.com
DNS Name=server3.myDomain.com  (There isn't actually a server3 at this point but I figured I might as well add it for possible expansion)

The cert chains properly back to DigiCert.

On the 2012 install, when I try to add the cert for Connection Broker - Publishing it comes back with the following message:
"The specified certificate is not valid. The certificate properties must match the requirements of the role service."

So what are the requirements that don't match and what do I need to do to rekey this cert correctly?

RDP incorrectly using compatible mode on both Windows Server 2012 R2 and Server Next

We have some VMs running Windows 8.1 and other VMs now running Windows 10 preview.  The environment inside the VMs is definitely GPU accelerated, but the transmission over the network uses the WS 2008 R2 fallback mode, as shown from the event logs on the Remote Desktop Virtualisation Host.  H264 encoding is disabled, unless we try to connect with something like FreeRDP, in which case it works fine.

I'm experiencing the same issues as this guy basically: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/a9fd61fb-0dbf-41f2-be59-9e5c76e6a3a2/rdp-incorectly-using-2008r2-compatible-mode-vdi-on-2012-r2-81-enterpise?forum=winserverTS

This happens under BOTH 2012 R2 and now upgraded Windows Server 10 box.  I have tried machines domained, non-domained, neither works.  Firewall off on client PC, and on VM.  I've extensively reviewed Group Policies and tried many options in there.  Nothing has helped.  Anyone got any ideas?  Avenues to investigate?

Machine is an i7 with 64GB of RAM and two AMD R7 260 GPUs which are available to Hyper-V.

Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server Event ID 20499

I keep getting Event ID 20499 "Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server \\SERVERNAME for user USERNAME" in our event logs for multiple servers that are running 2012 R2

I noticed that when this happens the user often is missing items that get applied via group policies such as desktop wallpapers and mapped drives.

I am also using the Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac that was release yesterday on another Mac computer and for certain users it won't launch the redirected folder that I specified when I get this Event ID 20499

Workaround for Log on Settings - Windows 2012

$

Working in a stricted enviroment, where remote clients are from a seperate domain area (no trust allowed) and GPO's unable to be modified which include lockdown to stop caching credentials (just password), we have an issue that we want our Windows 2012 RDS server (session host, no gateway) to automatically login as a single user, without being prompted.  In 2008 R2 RDS, the log on settings tab was available and we could pre-can a valid domain, username and password, however in 2012 this appears to be removed with only the password required tick box option available via GPO.

Has anyone experimented with using RDS in this kind of "kisok" approach? And if, how could it be achieved. I need to formulate a workaround that doesnt affect the client user, only the RDS server itself to accept such connections with only a domain name and username supplied.  The closest I can get is with a 0 character password and username stored in the .rdp file.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

RD Services Server 2012

Hi all , I have set up an RD Services test lab using Server 2012

test set up as follows

Host - Windows Server 2012 with Hyperv

VM's

DC - Domain Controller

App1 - RD Session Host -farm name (remote)

App2 - RD Session Host -farm name (remote)

Broker - RD Broker

internal connections 192.168.x.x addresses can connect to the farm (remote) and the load balancing seems to work fine, adding users the sessions alternate between servers, but when I connect from outside the network using the IP of the internet facing ip address , I would get connected to one server only (APP1) and never App2

I have also added the RRDNS farm name ip address for App1 and App2

although im not sure I need to do this in 2012. seems to be a 2008r2 thing. but tried it anyway.

did not seem to make any difference.

all the vms can ping each other

firewalls are off, and router ports forwarded

hope someone can help

thanks

login via RDS gateway server says can't connect to remote computer...how to debug??

Our consultant set up an RDS gateway, which is gateway.domain.org and two RDS connection brokers, which are collectively rdsbroker.domain.local, and several RDS hosts, which are collectively rdfarm.domain.local.

Logging in externally through gateway.domain.org works all the way through getting the Work Resources screen, then upon clicking the only available icon for a remote desktop session, things stop working as shown in the attached screenshot.

It appears something is preventing connection to the rdfarm host servers, but the error message does not indicate where or how the issues are occurring.

How do I start trying to figure this out??

Thank you, Tom

Is there a way to fix the Remote Desktop Connection Manager memory usage crashes?

I'm using RDCMan and it has been using a lot of memory and crashing.  With 12 connections it uses 1,548,976 K of memory and crashes with an "Unhandled exception" "Not enough storage is available to process this command. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070008)."  I love this program and want to know if there's a way to fix this on my end.  It seems like other people are not having this issue.  I'm running a fresh install of Win7 Ent.  I have .NET 3.51 and 4 installed. Do I need to installed .NET 2.0?

Here is the info from the crash:

Windows Server 2012 r2 - Remote audio not always comming through to client

$
0
0

We have a Windows Server 2012R2 server running on VMware vSphere 5.5. When connecting with a RDP client, the audio redirect is established each time (playback & recording), but remote audio doesn't always play and recording isn't registered. It works like 3 out of 10 times a user logs in, user independent.

Sometimes when the user logs in it works, but most of the time it doesn't. When it works, the audio bar in the "playback devices" window lights up like it should. This is not the case when it's not working, it does display the remote audio device but the audio bar remains faded when sound is playing.

So its like the audio is playing, but not on the "remote audio" devices, even though it is the only one listed in the session.

  • Desktop experience feature enabled
  • Windows Audio & Endpoint Builder services are set to automatic
  • Enabled local policies: Audio & video redirection, Recording redirection, Playback quality - high
  • RDP client config: audioqualitymode:i:1
  • USB headset both Logitech and Plantronics
  • Client independent: HP Thinclient (win8.1), and two Fujitsu desktop (win7) - fully up-to-date
  • RDP client file version 6.3.9600.16415

How can i troubleshoot this any further?
