Server 2012 with Remote Desktop Services and Virtualisation

Hi

I have one physical server on which I have Windows Server 2012 Standard installed. Roles on it include: AD DS, DNS and HyperV. This machine is also the domain controller for our organisation (with domain name ABC) and has a static IP of 192.168.1.20.

There is a virtual instance of Windows Server 2012 running, on which I have the roles Remote Desktop Services, Volume Activation Services. This virtual server has got a static IP of 192.168.1.19 and is connected to the domain ABC.

I have various other PCs who are connected to the domain ABC.

What I would like to do is run Remote Desktop Connection Broker & Remote Desktop Licensing, A Session Host / RemoteApp server on the virtual PC so that users can remotely access their accounts on the or a program running on the physical Server.

I tried a lot but I have failed. Could anyone out there please advise me how to go about doing this? I am not sure how to setup the RDC broker. Also will the session host server reside on the virtual server or the server which will be accessed by users? Would there be any special firewall settings that I have to know of in order to make this work?

Any help would be appreciated. If any info is need please let me know. It has been more than a week since I started working on this and I cannot find a solution.

Thanks you,

Ali

User Profile Service failure at logon

I have a number of users who access a single application on my server (2008 R2) using an RDP client through a VPN tunnel or over the local network.  All have been working well until recently when some users have been getting the message "The User Profile Service failed the login.  User profile cannot be loaded."  I have read the various postings relating to this but none appear to answer this problem.  All my users are defined in Active directory on the same server.  Some have roaming profiles and these can login with no problems.  Non roaming users who already have a local profile on the server can login.  But, non roaming users whose profile has gone from the server (and I don't know how they have been deleted) get the above message.  If I set up a completely new user they get the same message, but not if I make them roaming.  All appropriate group membership is OK.

RemoteApp : Web RDP components + Remoting application + Application switches

Hi people,

I've got an application deployed thru RemoteApp and I need to pass some dynamic arguments before the startup. (ie myapplication.exe /u /s "xyz" ).

Remote desktop authentication is made with only one user, then application will manage its user session in its own way.

I've the need of supply an authentication box via web, which will generate a web page containing any component (in this moment its an rdp java client) which can launch the application with arbitrary arguments.

Anyone has got a solution (free or low cost) for this problem? If possible, I would like to detach my business logic from the Microsoft activeX for Internet Explorer because of browser compatibility.

Thanks in advance, every help will be appreciated!

Redirect http requests from published app to client

Hi Everyone,

I have an application publised on a 2008R2 Remote Desktop Server.

Some functions of this application will open up a browser window (default browser for that user) and take them to a particular web page.

Is there any way that I can force these web requests to be opened locally on the client, and not opened on the server.

Many Thanks,

Peter

Change licensing from per device to per user 2008 R2 standard

Hit a wall with the Clearinghouse. At first it seem to be going good. Like several users on this forum I incorrectly installed the RDS licenses in the per device mode.  After research, I called the Clearinghouse and they understood the problem, said that I must remove the licenses off the Licensing server before going forward.  Told me to call back after getting this done. I executed a rebuild on the RDS database and it cleared the licenses off.  Now when I call back to the clearinghouse they tell me to contact Technical Support. Any other avenues to deal with Microsoft on this issue?

Server 2012 RDGateway SSO and SAN certificates

I know this topic has been beaten to death but the sheer amount of posts makes it difficult to decipher the fix.

Background:

Windows Server 2012 RDS infrastructure

*Gateway/Web Access/Licensing/Connection Broker roles on 1 Server 2012 VM

-Gateway configured with options:

  • Use these RD Gateway server settings | server name: scottapps.com
  • Logon method | Password authentication
  • Use RD Gateway credentials for remote computers - enabled
  • Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses - enabled
  • 3rd party SAN certificate (GoDaddy) with name "*.scottapps.com" installed and enabled for all role services (RDCB - enable single sign on; RDCB - publishing; RDWC; RDG)

*Session Host role installed on 3 separate VMs (each a separate VM running Server 2012)

*3 Remote App collections published (each going to their respective server)

*BYOD scenario - clients running Win7/Win8 connecting to RD Web. Working from home, offsite, etc.

2 issues:

*Being prompted twice for credentials - once when logging into RD Web (of course) and then again once a Remote App is selected. Not prompted twice internally from other server 2012 boxes joined to the domain. This leads be to believe if I used Win8 it wouldn't happen? http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2012/06/25/remote-desktop-web-access-single-sign-on-now-easier-to-enable-in-windows-server-2012.aspx

*Getting the "the identity of the remote computer cannot be verified..." warning. Not sure how to fix this since the internal name of the servers is xyz.local and the name of the SAN SSL cert is *.scotapps.com

Thanks!

RDS Testing with Windows 8

I have a Windows 2008 R2 RDS environment and for some reason when I access the RD Web Access page on a Windows 8 box w/ IE10, when I log in all the icons for RemoteApps are blank.  The text for the RemoteApp is there and the RemoteApp works just fine, but the icon itself is just blank.  This is only on Windows 8 - Vista and Windows 7 machines display the same RD Web Access site just fine.  Any ideas?

Remote Host

We have laptops and desktop connecting to other computers, even when the desktops, are shut down.  Anti-virus programs do not catch anything, we have uninstalled all remotre software form the the effected machines, and turned off rdp to all of them as well.

Any ideas.

What is happening lately is a windows shared session is opened,

and a remote host, with the computer name trying to connect.

We are have server 2003, and servers 2008 datacenters, and VM.

RemoteFX display adapter is "Unknown Device" on Windows Server 2012 client

I already have a Windows 8 Enterprise VM running with the RemoteFX display adapter so the RD Virtualization Host is configured properly. But now I have the Windows Server 2012 Standard client VM whose display adapter reports as a "Unknown Device", the hardware ID's are reporting it as the RemoteFX display adapter but no driver for it. I also put in the Integration Services Disk Setup, and it did perform an update to the Hyper-V integration. All Windows Updates are installed on the Virtualization Host Server, as well as the Server 2012 client.

Does Windows Server 2012 Standard not support a vGPU?

The documenation here is incomplete about this subject: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2012/11/26/remotefx-features-for-windows-8-and-windows-server-2012.aspx

Forwarding TCP port to RD Gateway server and SSL certificates

$

Does RD Gateway use the same TCP port as the RDSH server (3389)? I need to know so that i know what ports to forward to it.

Also, during the initial setup I used a self signed certificate. This means that the domain configured on the self signed certificate is "hostname.domain.local". How can I get this to work from the outside? We have a public domain.com, however when I get to the RD Gateway Manager and try to create another self signed certificate, it says to "Create a self-signed certificate matching the RD Gateway FQDN". It allows me to change the certificate name though.

Does it really have to match the FQDN or can I just change it to hostname.domain.com?

thanks

Mulitple Pooled VDI desktops using Windows Server 2012 VDI Redirection

$

Hi,

I am currently in the process of rolling out Thin Clients and wondering if there is away to have multiple Redirection Connection brokers.

I currently have a High availability Connection broker configuration using a VDI pool and configured the registry to redirect to the pool Virtualpool1.

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServ  er\ClusterSettings

DefaultTsvUrl  tsv://VMResource.1.Virtualpool1

Is there anyway to configure multiple connection broker farms or redirectors so I can have a address for each VDI pool.

I am aware that you can modify RDP files to launch a VDI pool.

in addition to this, is there an way to load a RDP session /VDI pool from the login screen of a Windows thin PC so that users can have a SSO experience.

Best Regards,

Windows 2012 Terminal Services

I'm setting up a Windows 2012 server and have been reading a lot out there about the remote desktop services w/ VDI, RDWeb, and so on. But I need to know if it offers the traditional method of TS in which my users can access the TS via RDP from any internet enabled device?

Also, how do I allow access from my network so that RDWeb is accessible from outside the network? What ports are needed to open?

Lastly, what's common practice and easiest for  a remote access? I've read that Direct Access requires Windows 7 Ultimate or better and they have to be domain computers. So that rules out my network since we are mostly Win XP and Win 7 Pro.

Just looking for anyone's input on their experiences.

Thanks in advance.

Hey Guys

I am about to build a small RDS Farm. All serveres in the environment are running Windows Server 2012, except the new RDS-servers which will be running Windows Server 2008 R2, due to the Modern UI.

My quiestion: Can I install the Connection Broker Role  and the Licensing Role a Windows Server 2012" and the make the RDS servers with Windows Server 2008 R2, use these services.

Thomas
