RDS Licensing using Per Device CAL: Scenarios in which a client device can have more than one license in the license store.

Hi All,

As per my understanding a client device can have more than one per Device CAL stored in the license store in the registry (HKLM\Softare\Microsoft\MSLicensing\Store). I have been trying to figure out that what are those scenarios.

One of the replies in another post on this forum, suggests one such scenario as using VPN connection into different companies and launch mstsc client locally once VPN is established. Since we are using the same client device, so this one device should get a different CAL from each of the companies' licensing servers.

Is there any other simpler way of achieving this in the same over all network (like with in my company's network) by doing some kind of multi domain setup.  Please let me know if you have any pointers, would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Problems with Windows Server 2012 R2 RemoteFX

Good Evening,

I have Windows 2012 R2 Datacener (educational license from Dreamspark) and this is a standalone server. I have installed the required roles for RemoteFX, I enabled it in Hyper-V and the client machine is Windows 7 Ultimate. When I try to connect I receive a message that the user is not permitted to logon remotely. I am on the 120-day grace peroid for terminal licenses. When I remove the RemoteFX card everything works fine and I can connect using RDP

Next topic: RDS and printing and specifically a print server

$

I have a functional 2012r2 RDS farm.  And a completely dysfunctional 2012r2 print server.  And there's about 40 printers.

And drum roll please....every user in RDS gets all the printers pushed out all the time...that needs to change i know, but thats a political battle.

Even right now on my nonproduction test rds server with only 8 printers pushed from the same print server it's a relative disaster.

So in the meantime, short of installing all 40 printers on the RDS servers (or on one and migrating/copying them) anyone have any wisdom for using a 2012 r2 print server with rds?

(They are pushed through the prnt mgmt console on the print server, selecting a gpo with only User Config enabled, and the connection type is set to Per User.  They push with relative ease.  Some may disappear later, perhaps disabling background refresh is the key there.  Some will work and then later show up in devices and printers as unspecified.  Some will double up, i'll have two!)

any thoughts?

2012r2 RDS Farm User Temp Profiles problem?

$

Hi All,

I have a 5 server RDS farm with 5 session hosts. 2 of them are also session brokers in HA mode. The desktop collection is setup to use user profile disks over a network share to another server.

What I have noticed is that when a user logs in they are prompted for the usual username and password which they enter, they are then prompted again for thier logon credentials wich they enter a second time and then recive a "User profile cannot be loaded" error and are logged off.

I have a policy set to not allow temp user profiles, which is why they are logged off and that is fine.

What I can see happening is that on the first logon they hit 1 of the brokers which mounts thier UPD, the broker then redirects them to another server of it's choosing for some reason and that server prompts them to logon again.

The problem I can see though is that if they enter thier password too quickly and try and logon the second server can't load thier profile as the broker still has it mounted.

If they wait 5 seconds on the second logon then they are fine. I have watched this occur, it takes a few seconds for the broker to dis-mount thier UPD so that it is available on the second server.

So I have 2 questions:

1. How can I stop it prompting the second login and pass the credentials through?

2. How can I get the broker to release the disk fast enough for the second server to be able to mount it?

Any help here would be greatly appreciated!

Dean

Almost deadend: creating virtual desktop collection fails due to template export location permission issue

Server 2012 Standard

Event source: Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-TSV-VmHostAgent

Event id: 5121

Event log details: "Remote Desktop Virtualization Host could not export the virtual desktop named RDS Master Win8 Ent x64 to the specified location C:\RDVirtualDesktopTemplates\RDS-Win8-64-Pool\IMGS\__1.

Virtual desktop name: RDS Master Win8 Ent x64
Virtual desktop export location: C:\RDVirtualDesktopTemplates\RDS-Win8-64-Pool\IMGS\__1
Hresult: 0x80070005"

I have configured the folder with full permissions for RDS endpoint servers and domain users; the same configuration worked fine with another 2012 RDVH server but not this one.

Looked around and found nothing helpful... running into dead end...

Please share comments/ideas if any?

Thanks,

When I run Remote Desktop from the console of my computer Windows 7 I get a message saying that if I run this tool from the console some options are disabled as Remote Control and Connect.
Is there any way to enable these possibilities from the console?

Is it safe/good practice to use hyper-v 2012 r2 for all the RDS roles on different VM's on different servers? For example, the gateway server would be a hyper-v guest, the session host a separate hyper-v guest on a different server and so on

Cannot start RemoteApp. Staus only says "Starting......"

Hi
I have configured a Windows 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services environment and I have enabled the Gateway option
From public network I'm able to login through a "KEMP Loadmaster" configuration where I have opened for port 443 but when I'm starting a RemoteApp from the RDWeb the status just shows "Starting" and the program does not start.
I have checked the Windows servers and I can see the request arrive to the Gateway server but it seems like the answer do not come back to the client?

Very slow reponse times in 2012 Remote Web Access

Hi all,

I am having an issue on one of our customers 2012 servers.

All of a sudden logging into RWA is taking around 2 minutes. It takes even longer once you have logged in to wait for the rdp links to download for the end user's PCs.

I have tested this internally and get the same issue. So far I have tried:

- Trying locally
- Created a new test user with no assigned policies or anywhere access to documents and PCs (no result)
- Rebooted the server
- Restarted IIS services
- DisableTaskOffload DWORD value in the registry (as seen on another post)
- Their internet lines are fine
- No apparent performance issues on the box (physical server)
- Only event logs issue I am seeing seems to be

Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server \\server.domain.local for user USERNAME

- Could this be related?

Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated as the  home users cannot currently connect onto their PC's.

Always prompted for credentials when attempting SSO to Windows 2012 R2 RemoteApps

I'm working with a client to provide RemoteApps to their domain joined machines and have setup the required 2012 R2 RDS servers to provide the functionality.

I have setup similar systems in the past and been able to get Single Sign-On to work perfectly but for some reason, the same Group Policy settings that normally allow "Credential Delegation" when users launch RemoteApps just won't work on this network.

The users can subscribe to the RemoteApp feed without any prompts but when they try to launch the Apps they get a completely blank user credential prompt (doesn't even show the domain name).

I've been round and round checking other Group Policies aren't interfering with the new settings, setting up new test users and domain joined machines but to no avail.

Has anyone else had a similar problem in the past that they've been able to troubleshoot successfully?

Cheers for now

How to enable MultiUserEnabled in Windows Server 2012

Thin Clients, Expired Passwords, RDS OH MY! Failed sign-on when password is forced to change or expired from thin client

Hello everyone... looking for a spat of advice...

(All servers 2012 r2 unless otherwise specified)

(All terminals are Dell Wyse T10D using Connection Broker = Microsoft)

Environment:

3 HA Connection Brokers

3 Session Hosts

2x Domain Controllers (1 Server 2008 R2)

So, my thin client prompts for creds and takes those and passes them using NTLM to /RDWeb/FeedLogin/WebFeedlogin.aspx

I found this after using Message Analyzer and decrypting the TLS packets

When a user's password is expired or forced to change on next logon, i get "RD Sign-on Failed" on the thin client.

Session Collection:

Security Layer: Negotiate

Encryption Level: Client Compatible

No NLA

Any thoughts or help are much much much appreciated!

Hi Guys,

I'm planning to deploy a RDS server on 2012 R2 with user based licensing

I have total 50 users in AD but only 20 users will be using remote desktop at  same time (concurrent users)

I'm wondering whether i needs to apply 50 CALS or only 20 CALS on RDS server

Kindly revert as soon as possible

Many Thanks in advance

Remote App HA options, across Hybrid (LOB Site 1) and Cloud Collections (LOB Site 2)

Issue: "Today you cannot deploy the RemoteApp image into an existing vNet or modify its vNet membership after creation.  This is a roadmap item for the RemoteApp team.  I know what you are thinking and I love the vision.  I tell the story ofthe potential that RemoteApp offers to help your recovery efforts from a client perspective.  In the event of a disaster, will your employees have their corporate issued laptop with them?  Will they have access to VPN software?  What if none of that mattered?  What if they could grab their tablet, jump on their home computer or their mother-in-laws and access critical LOB applications in a secure fashion.  No risk of data leakage and no need to open a bunch of ports in Azure.  I make sure to say we are not there yet, but think of the possibilities!  "

(Excerpt above taken from Karl Rautenstrauch <Karl.Rautenstrauch@microsoft.com>)

ASK: taking the Azure traffic Manager balancing / failover concept from Azure region A to Azure Region B – and incorporating the supported Remote App configs

  • Cloud Collection Config
  • Hybrid Collection Config

http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/remoteapp-create-cloud-deployment/

is it possible to substitute Azure Region A with a remote App Hybrid Collection, and Azure Region B (or again A) with a remote App Cloud collection Config.

Note – this wouldn’t be orchestrated with ASR – instead there would be HA across the service.

leverage Azure Traffic Manager with the following architecture:

  1. 1st Instance and End Point for Remote – App (Azure) – to -  local LOB Apps (on-premises)
  2. 2nd Instance and Endpoint for Remote – App  (Azure) – to - Azure LOB Apps (quasi-failed over – as on-premise site is no longer available)

Based on availability of 1 or 2 – Azure traffic Manager should service requests accordingly.

At least this is my thinking, would this work?  Any gotchas to consider?

Thanks,

AD user account Remote Desktop Services Profile tab

$

I have a template I created for a RDS environment.  I'm using the AD account properties to map the Home directory.

If I set the home folder on the "Profile" tab and copy the template to a new user, it works just fine.  If I change the template to connect the Home folder from the Remote Desktop Service Profile tab it works for the template...but when I copy that template to a new user the home folder attribute does not copy.

Anyone know why?  Or perhaps of a trick to get this to work?

I've gone as far to set the msTSHomeDrive and msTSHomeDirectory attributes "Attribute is copied when duplicating a user" but doesn't appear to work.  I dont' see an updated "RDS" type attribute that stands out on this 2012 DC.

VDI - Under Collections > Host Servers | Virtual Desktop count completely wrong...

$

We have an 8 node cluster running RDS/VDI. We have 3 collections with 30 pooled desktops each in them. If I look in server manager, under collections; there are 3 boxes. I box goes across the top that shows all the collections. Then the bottom is split into two boxes. One box on the left is titled "Host Servers" and the one on the right is titled "Connections".

Under the HOST SERVERS section, it shows a list of all 8 of my RD Virtualzation Hosts, and how many Virtual Desktops are running on each. The issue I'm seeing is that the counts that this interface showsdo not match at all with what shows under Failover Cluster Manager.

Is there something that is not working right? Is there a way to get this interface to "re-inventory" so that the counts are correct? Or is this interface pretty much useless in that regard (among others)? I have logged off and re-opened server manager 20-30 times over the past months and it's just always wrong.

Thanks.

What File should i synchronize?

Currently have two session hosts running that have identical configurations and was wondering what information from the files c:\Users\%username%\appdata could be synchronized between the two machines without negative repercussions to create the similar experience of our software on both of these machines? Looking at utilities like sync toy to provide the syncing capabilities.

Remote Desktop Services Properties - Operation failed: Access is denied

Hi

when i try to change the Remote Desktop Services User Profile Path with ADUC i get the error "Operation failed: Access is denied"

This error occurs in a subdomain with the Domain Admin of the Subdomain. I'm able to change this attribute with the Enterprise Admin.

As far as I understand this attribute is set in the userParameters but I don't know what permissions must be set to allow the Domain Admin to change this Attribute and why the Enterprise Admin is allowed to change the Attribute and the subdomain Admin not.

Our AD Schema is 2003.

How to set up remote desktop licensing mode in windows server 2012

$

Hi,

I've deployed yesterday a windows 2012 server (RTM) and set up the license server for my 10-CAL licenses. That's ok.

But I can not see a way to point my server to see the license server. Every time I log in, I receive a message that the RD services will expire in 119 days.

Using the diagnosis tool it says that licensing mode isn't set up.

Where I can find the tool to set up this licensing mode? In windows server 2008 this question was asked in the setup wizadr.

Thanks a lot!
