Remote Desktop Now Disconnects Wireless Connection

$

I have two computers running XP Pro. The desktop is using a wired connection to my home network and the laptop uses a wireless connection. For nearly a year, I have been able to use Remote Desktop to control the laptop from the desktop. In the past month or so, this has changed.

Now, when using Remote Desktop to connect to the laptop, the wireless connection is dropped. Logging manually back in on the laptop resets the wireless connection, but this is consistently dropped each time I try using Remote Desktop. I need this facility since the laptop is used to control some equipment remote from desktop.

The desktop is able to connect and control a wired connection to a new Vista Ultimate machine, so I don't think there is anything wrong with it.

The only software changes to the laptop has been whatever Windows updates that have come through. Does anyone have any idea how I can get my Remote Desktop to work once again?

How do I set my resolution to 1024X768 and also keep the aspect ratio at full screen with no borders?

Hi there,

I have client with an Access 2000 database that can't be decommissioned yet on old XP box.  to make her setup more secure for now I have virtualized the XP box she now connects through RDP to the VM using her Windows 7 PC.  Her resolution is set to 1024x768  60hertz 32 bit, her aspect ratio is full screen no borders.  If she uses a KVM switch to look at her the xp box the resolution works for her.  If she vm's to the new box the access database forms are too small for her liking.  I have tried editing the RDP so that it doesn't scale and keeps a full screen using 1024 X768 resolution but so far nothing seems to work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I have tried editing the RDP connection in notepad using Smart size to turn off scaling etc. but so far it doesn't appear to work.

Thanks again

Printers of other users visible and show up multiple times under the control panel

Hello,

I currently have a very interesting problem:

Some (not all) printers show up multiple times on every user session on the specific terminal server. This behavior show up on both of the 2 servers. Also the printer only shows up multiple times under the control panel, but not in the printer dialog.

The users are not part of either printer operators, Administrator or Power Users.

The servers are Windows Server 2012.

I cannot find a reason for this after some hours with my friend Google.

Does someone have any idea how to fix this?

Thanks in advance

Paul

How can I cancel the "Recreate All Virtual Dekstops" for a pooled collection in 2012 R2?

I currently have a system single-server installation of VDI, using 2012 R2 Standard as the server, using pooled collections of Windows 8.1.  In general, everything works very well, but I've been searching in vain for ONE command.  When I make a change to the master template in Hyper-V, Checkpoint it, then go into the Remote Desktop Services, go the appropriate collection and initiate a "Recreate All Virtual Desktops", how would I cancel that?

It's happened on more than one occasion, where I make a change or an update to the template, and then push out the 25 new Virtual Desktops, and then the client comes back asking for a "little" change....but I'm stuck pushing it out until all 25 desktops have been recreated.  There must be a way to interrupt this process (probably leaving a few VM Desktops in an unstable state...which I don't care too much about as it's a pooled collection), update the template, and push it out again with the "Recreate All Virtual Desktops".  I do have the concurrency set so it recreates 5 at a time, but that noticeably impacts the users, and I don't want to just push out all 25 at a pop and interrupt everyone's work.  Any ideas?

Remote App - Black Screen on lock

We have been using 2008 RDS for a while now to allow user remote app access to one of our business applications. We recently P2Vd the RDS server to a 2012 Hyper-V cluster, and since have had issues with users complaining about getting a black screen on their remote app.

After a bit of investigation, it appears that this only happens after they lock their main machine and step away for a period of time.  We have a company policy to auto-lock after 10 minutes of inactivity, and when they come back, unlock their main machine, their remote app is black.  RDS does not re-paint the screen and they have no way to get back in.  I have found though, that it doesn't actually freeze the session. Users can key their password into the "black" and hit enter, and it logs them in as if they just unlocked the remote app.

The question is why?  It obviously doesn't lock up the app, just doesn't repaint the screen to bring the logon up.  No amount of moving it between monitors or max/minimizing seems to matter.  User OS are both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 and it is reproducible every time.  It has just started since we virtualized the RDS server.

Anyone ever see anything like this..Any ideas?

Shadow only for Administrators?

Hi,

is it true, what if user needs to shadow other user session on Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS he needs to be a local Administrator on that Terminal?

If yes, maybe there are plans to change that?

Office on RDS on Server 2012 licensing

$

I have a client using RDS on Server 2012 to run proprietary software. They would like to begin allowing their sales force to connect to the server via iPads and run Office, which isn't yet installed on the server.

Thus far I've come to the understanding that what that will take is a volume license for Office installed on the server and an RDS license (they already have several) for every concurrent connection.

My questions are -

1) Am I right about installing the Office volume license on the server?

2) Do they need Office installed on the client device as well? (I wouldn't think so, but some things I'm reading say otherwise)

3) One of the reasons they want to switch to iPads (or Android devices or whatever) is to limit cost if their salesperson looses or breaks their device. So my question is, does the volume license count concurrent connections like the RDS license does or is it somehow "tied" to the remote devices? For example -- If a salesperson does lose their device is it possible just to get another one and have them start using it without any additional licenses or is the license that was "tied" to the old device just gone forever and we have to purchase another one to connect the new device? If the salesperson wants to RDS into the server from their home computer while their iPad is off and connect to their RD session would that require another license? Or, if one of the people who connects to RDS who doesn't need to use Office accidentally opens "Word," will that license be then "tied" to their computer and wasted?

Thank you for any help,

Remote Desktops in Feed Won't Download on Windows Clients

I'm having a strange issue on all of my Windows clients. The desktops (RemoteApps work just fine) that are published in Web Access don't download in either the Remote Desktop App (Windows Store) or in the Remote Apps and Desktops on the control panel in Win 7/8. The same resources will download on Android and IOS clients however. The follow is in the RemoteApp and Desktop Connections Admin log in event viewer (Event ID 1018):

The following resource could not be downloaded:

https://vdi.georgiasouthern.edu/RDWeb/Feed/rdp/cpub-General_FacStaf-General_FacStaf-CmsTempVm.rdp

Make sure that:

-     The file exists on the remote computer

-     Your computer has the client software to use this resource

-     Your computer can connect to the Internet

-     You typed the correct connection URL

Connection name: VDI @ Georgia Southern

Connection URL: https://vdi.georgiasouthern.edu/rdweb/feed/webfeed.aspx

Error code: 0x80070003, 0x0

My environment is Windows 2012 R2.

Any insight or troubleshooting ideas would be greatly appreciated.

IOS Remote Desktop app and computers connected to SBS 2008--can't get it to work

I can connect directly to the server without a remote resource in the IOS app.

But I'd like to be able to connect to computers in the office like we can through RWW. RWW works fine, but not from my phone. (Yes I can connect to the server and take over computers from the phone but I don't want other people in the office to log into the server first!).

I can never get the remote resources section in the app to connect. I usually get "Unable to locate any remote resources for the URL". error in the resources section. I've tried a simple "https://remote.domain.com", "https://remote.domain.com:987", etc.

We have a self-signed certificate. I can't think of anything in the server setup that is anything other than normal.

I can do direct connect using "Remote Desktop Connection" in windows 7. In the remote desktop server settings I just put remote.domain.com and "Ask for password (NTLM)" for the login method. Then on the general tab I have just the simple computer name and the domain\username. That's all I had to setup to get that to work.

Any suggestions?

Cannot RDP to 2008R2 server

This issue comes and goes happened to few different 2008R2 servers.

Symptom:

Open Remote Desktop Connection with server’s name, click “Connect”.

After configuring remote session message, I put in the username and password, click OK.

It open the remote server windows, but it seems to be disconnected and close Windows immediately and back to Remote Desktop Connection again.

I have tried “Reboot server”, Reset the “RDP-Tcp session” without success.

There is no Error/Critical/Warning log in the Windows eventlogs.

By login server via console, I noticed something different in RDS Manager. Here is screenshot right after server rebooted.

Server   Session               User                      ID            State

Srv1       Services                  0              Disconnected

Srv1       Console                User1                    1              Active

Srv1       listener                 listener                 65536   Listen

Srv1       RDP-Tcp               listener                 65537     Listen

After first RDP attempt failed, there is a new session created with Down state.

Server   Session              User                      ID            State

Srv1       Services                                            0             Disconnected

Srv1       Console                User1                    1              Active

Srv1                                                               2              Down

Srv1       listener                 listener                 65536        Listen

Srv1       RDP-Tcp               listener                 65537        Listen

Hopefully, someone has answer for this weird issue.

UAG 2010 and RDS 2012

Does the RDS Gateway built into UAG 2010 intergrate with a Windows 2012 RDS infrastructure?

And can UAG 2010 be used to publish applications and desktops from Windows 2012 RDS?

simply want 5 users to uses a small Microsoft access database concurrently on LAN & WAN

I have been looking at server 2012 std to do this but am I using a hammer to crack a nut?

Looking at creating a remote gateway but now needs to be a domain controller..!

remote access works on the server but only 2 connections are allowed at any one time, otherwise that would have done it.

Can anyone advise of the simplest way to have 5-8 users to concurrently access a database on the server via a couple on the LAN, and the rest remote home based users?

IS server 2003/2008 simpler?

Many thanks in advance.

RemoteFx and Twain Bandwidth on 2012 R2?

$

Hello,

Is it possible to compress the twain redirection traffic between the Windows 8.1 clients and the RDSH 2012R2 servers?

Because in a WAN branch office when a user scan a document (black and white, 100ppp, from a 1Mb/s WAN branch office) it takes around 1 minute to complete the operation (whereas the same operation take 10 seconds with citrix xenapp 4.5 and twain).

BTW "Configure compression for RemoteFX data" is set to "Optimized to use less network bandwidth".

RDS 2012 R2 + User Profile Disks - corrupt ntuser.dat after RDS Host crashes

$

I have an RDS 2012 R2 Session host collection set up with a connection broker and with UPD's running off a share with Server 2008 R2. All worked great.. until one of the Session Hosts crashed/blue screened and dumped the users.

When the users reconnected from the server that crashed, they all logged in with temporary profiles.  After a bunch of testing and troubleshooting I found that the ntuser.dat file in their UPD's became corrupt.  We have 1 Session host that seems to have an issue with occasional blue screening and it's causing a significant pain to consistently have to re-create the user profile disks of the users that were logged in if a session host is powered down abruptly.

I really like the feature, but I'm starting to look at alternatives.  The content in the profile disks isn't super critical, it's primarily shortcuts and program settings but it's annoying for users when they reset.

anyone else seeing similar issues?  any suggestions to dealing with it? (i'm trying to avoid doing regular backups of a "convenience feature").

Server 2012: Remote Desktop + RemoteApp = No GPP Mapped Drives for 2nd Session

$

Setting up and testing a new 2012 Remote Desktop/RemoteApp server.

We have Group Policy Preferences mapping drives (S for Shared, U for User).  Also have logging turned on for GPP Drives.

Possibly relevant Group Policy settings:

  • Computer/Policies/Administrative Templates/System/Logon/Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon: Enabled
  • Computer/Policies/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Remote Desktop Services/Remote Desktop Session Host/Connections/Restrict Remote Desktop Services users to a single Remote Desktop Services session: I've tried 'Not Configured' (2008+ should restrict to a single session by default right?) and 'Enabled' without change of behavior

Scenario 1:  When I log in with a full Remote Desktop I get my mapped drives.  If I leave this session either Active or Disconnected and open a published RemoteApp (WordPad for example) I get a 2nd session (viewed from the CONNECTIONS list from Server Manager) but no mapped drives (File/Open in WordPad does not show mapped drives.

Scenario 2: (From no Active/Disconnected sessions) - When I do the opposite - open up RemoteApp WordPad I get the mapped drives.  If I leave this session Active or Disconnected and open a full Remote Desktop I get a 2nd session again and no mapped drives.  The full Remote Desktop login window went by really fast here - I usually see "Applying Drive Maps...", etc... but I didn't see it here - either it didn't process it or it went by so fast I couldn't see.

GPP Mapped Drive logs are not updating on the 2nd session created (looks like GPP Mapped Drives are not getting called)

I run these tests on a 2008r2 RD/RemoteApp server and I get the mapped drives in the 2nd session in both scenarios above.  GPP Mapped Drive logs still do not update on the 2nd session (so I assume this is by design).

I'm assuming it shares session settings for drive maps in 2008r2 but not in 2012 (? from what I can see how in 2008r2 the 2nd session does not update the GPP Mapped Drive logs).

How can I get GPP Mapped Drives to show up in Remote Desktop AND RemoteApps?

Thanks

-Andrew

RSAT in Server 2012R2 for RDS Session management

$

Trying to setup a 2012R2 server, to be able to remotely manage a number of Remote Destop Services servers, particularly to manage the individual sessions of RD users. Apparently this should be able to be done with the Server management tools within 2012R2, but I cannot find this option anywhere.

Apparently the RSAT are supposed to be already installed, and available through add/remove features, but it does not appear anywhere I can find.

Can someone point me in the correct direction?

Thanks.

Hyper-V Starting Machine's Randomly

$

I have been using Hyper-V for 6 months now and its working great. One issue I am having is that , seemingly randomly , it starts several machines that are in a saved state and leaves them running until I shut them off. It causes major issues because I have 100+ Virtual machines each assigned with 4GB of ram in a system with only 64GB. This is a RDweb setup with only 10 users who only use 1 machine at a time so it is never an issue.

I cannot seem to find any info on why this is happening. My best guess would be that the machine is undergoing some sort of maintenance.
