Is it possible to have more than 2 RDP Sessions in Windows 2003 possible without Terminal Services enabled?

$

I'm kind of new at this and hoping someone here can help out.  Thanks in advance!

I've installed Terminal Services CALs (20 per User and 20 Device) on a License Server and verified that I can connect more than 2 RDP sessions to a TEST server (a second system -also running Windows2003) which I've enabled Terminal Services on and pointed at the License Server.

My question is can this be done without first enabling Terminal Services on the test server?  The reason I ask is because I saw a rather ominous message saying that applications on the test server would have to be reinstalled were I to continue to enable Terminal Services on it.  That wasn't any issue on the test server where there aren't any critical pre-existing applications but my goal is to allow several (around 5-10) people log in simultaneously to a DEVELOPMENT server that's been around for about a year and has critical applications which they depend on installed on it.  Reinstalling them wouldn't be trivial since some of the knowlege about them has left the company.

So basically I'd like to know if there's a way, without enabling Terminal Services, to get it to recognize and leverage the CALs on the License Server so that more than two people can RDP to it simultaneously in a simple manner just as they do for up to two users now but without the two user limitation.

Or am I misinterpretting the message and making too big a deal about enabling Terminal Services on Windows 2003?  I also don't really understand why applications that are working fine now for two RDP users would have to be reinstalled after Terminal Services were enabled.

Thanks!

Server 2012 VDI - Can not connect to Pool when RemoteFX adapter is installed.

Hello,

I have an development VDI environment.

I have everything setup 1 server is a Connection Broker, 1 Web Access Server, 1 Gateway Server, 1 License Server, 1 Virtual Host Server and one 3 Virtual machine pool.

I can connect to the pool no problem until, i add the RemoteFX adapter to the Virtual machines. I have enabled it on the Virtual Host Server, and then i shut down the virtual machines in the pool and add the RemoteFX graphics card to the virtual machines, Then i reboot them, I log in directly to each virtual and let it install the new graphics drivers and reboot.

After that when i try to connect the MSTSC connection goes through as it did before except right after it say" determining connection Quality" it just disappears. I see lots of event logs saying the session is connected, but no error messages on any of the machines. If i connect directly to the Virtual machines it connects no problem, but as soon as i try and connect to the pool itself through the connection broker that is when it stops.

I am running on a 1GBps network same subnet as the Virtaul machines and every other server for these test.

Please help.

Remote users are not able to connect to Terminal Server from WAN while administrators are able to

Good evening.

I have setup my Terminal Server and it is activated. I have also created a Firewall rule to allow connections to port 3389 mapped from WAN to the internal IP of my Terminal Server. after trying to connect, I was able to reach the Terminal server using my admin account. I tried a different scenario, trying to log in using a user account but I couldn't, the error message was:

"The connection was denied because the user account is not authorized for remote login."

Any Suggestions?

I've got a two server RDS 2012 farm that uses TS Roaming Profiles and Folder Redirection. Everything works well, but the font looks like total garbage. Letters are shoved together, etc. Enabling ClearType on the server fixes everything, but the setting isn't saved between logons. Any ideas how to fix this?

Does windows server 2008 Supports 2880X2560

Hi,

I'm connecting from a Windows XP SP3 that runs a RDP 7 client to Windows server 2008 R2.

The machine that runs windows XP has three monitors attached: Dell u3011 (1600X2560) and two standard 19" monitors (1280X1024). The "Use all my monitors for the remote session" check-box is unavailable, therefor I decided to use only two out of the three monitors, the 30" and one of the 19" which are located one next to another.

I created a .rdp file and edited its height and width manually to 2880X2560, but the session opens itself over 800X600. Is there any way to configure the RDP to use those monitors more efficiently?

*I'm aware that some of the remote screen will not be displayed, since the monitors combination does not create a rectangular shape.

Thanks!

RDS Licensing Server Claims it's out of per device CALS but isn't.

Hi!

My Remote Desktop Services Licensing host has errors of Event ID 21:

The Remote Desktop license server "%myhostname"does not have any remaining permanent licenses of the type "Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 : Per Device CAL (TS or RDS)". As a result, the Remote Desktop license server cannot issue licenses of the type "Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 : Per Device CAL (TS or RDS)" to the Remote Desktop Session Host or Remote Desktop Virtualization Host server "172.ipaddr". To resolve this problem, verify that the Remote Desktop licensing mode configured on the RDSH or RDVH server matches the type of licenses installed on the Remote Desktop license server. If required, purchase and install additional licenses as needed for this Remote Desktop license server.

However, Remote Desktop Services Licensing Manager clearly shows

Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2: Installed TS or RDS Per Device Cals [License Program:] Built-in [Total Licenses:] 232 [Available:] 221 [Issued:] 11.

And it sometimes issues temporary CALs.

Any idea what's going on? I just moved licensing from one server to another and deactivated the other server, if that helps. It was working fine on the other server.

Hi,

I have a 2008 R2 Server with the Terminal Services Role working fine, all the users can connect, but I have a problem, I have installed on the same server the Microsoft Dynamics Navision software, and when any try to use the mail function, it opens Outlook (I have installed the Microsoft Office and configured with exchange for every user) but every time says that Outlook is not the default mail client, and asks to put as default mail client, there is not any other mail client installed, and I don't know for what reason the option of the default mail client do not remain fixed, any idea? Thanks.

Downgrade Windows 2008 Server R2 RDP 7.1 for older thin clients?

$

Can the RDP 7.1 in Windows Server 2008 R2 be downgraded to be compatible with older client operating systems?

We have several HP t5700 XP-Embedded thin clients deployed at the client site, connecting currently to a Windows Server 2003 running terminal services. I believe these thin clients will connect to a terminal server running as high as RDP 6.1

We're replacing the old 2003 server with a new server running Windows Server 2008 R2 and terminal services.

I've been unable to get the thin clients to connect to the new server, and the old desktops running XP SP2 would not connect either. The error message is something about unable to connect because of security. Only after I upgraded the desktops to XP SP3 were they able to connect. The HP t5700 thin clients running XP-Embedded cannot be upgraded, as far as I've been able to research.

What I'd really like to do is downgrade the RDP from 7.1 to something lower like 6.1. I'm quite sure they will work with 6.1 because we have another server running Windows Server 2008 (not R2) and it is running RDP 6.1 and the thin clients can connect to it fine.

I have already tried the suggestions of leaving the Network Level Authentication option unchecked, setting the Security Layer to Negotiate, nothing has worked.

RDSH 2012 with 2008R2 Connection broker / Gateway /Web Access

Hello,

We have an environment with a couple of W2K8R2 RDSH servers (no farm) and a separate W2K8R2 Gateway / Web Access / Connection Broker.

Access to the RDSH is only possible through the Gateway.

We want want to add a W2012 RDSH server to this configuration, will this be fully compatible or is it advised to first upgrade the W2K8R2 Gateway / Web Access / Connection Broker?

Problems Accessing Windows 2008 TS Gateway RemoteApp from Windows 2003 Server

Hello,

I'm experiencing issues accessing a providers RemoteApp from a Windows 2003 Terminal Server. The provider is running a TS Gateway on a Windows 2008 R2 server.

After entering the https:// address I could not get past the installation of the addon of the Terminal Services ActiveX Client and could not see the RemoteApps. I was able to fix this by running an install of RDP 6.1 using Windows XP compatibility mode.

Now when I attempt to launch an app I get the error "This computer can't connect to the remote computer because the Terminal Services Gateway server address requested and the certificate subject name do not match."
The provider is using a wildcard certificate. They have supplied me with the certificate which I have installed to the Trusted Root Certification Authority and the automatic assigned location without success.

I have no issues connecting to the remoteapps via a Windows XP or 2008 R2 machine so I wonder if this setup will even work and if I'm just wasting my time.

Thanks in advance,

D.

2008R2 cluster - Outlook 2010 - RemoteApps - No sound

Currently running a 2008 R2 cluster, and users are complaining about no sound via Outlook 2010 when using remoteapps.

Sure enough if you use the full remote desktop client, sound is not an issue.

IE, and other apps have no issues with sound via the remote apps option.

Outlook 2010 does not have the new message pop ups or calendar reminder sounds when used in a remote app.

Any ideas?

RemoteApp and focus on dialog boxes

We are publishing our applications to the user using RemoteApp.
It happens rather often that when you do something in an app that causes the app to display a dialogbox or maybe just another window
the new window will come up behind the app and impossible to get to. It seems it wont get focus properly and you cannot minimize the app in order to see the window that is requiring your action

I have found a couple of notes about it but nothing with any sugestion to a solution or so.

Anyone seen this before and knows anything more about it

RemoteApp application freeze or focus issue

$

The company that I am consulting with has an issue with an in-house developed application that they are trying to publish to clients via RemoteApp from a Windows 2008 R2 server.  The app has a Java front end and talks to a back end SQL database.  The application should behave as follows:

In the main application window a button is clicked to bring up a data set.  In that windows another button is clicked to bring up a selection window.  Once a selection is made a button is clicked and the selection window disappears and a progress dialog box pops up.  The progress box eventually disappears leaving you back at the data set screen which can then be closed.

The problem is when running via RemoteApp as soon as the progress box finishes and disappears, focus is not returned to the other window to allow closing it.  At this point also on the Terminal Server the javaw process starts chewing through 80 - 90%% CPU (although looking at the threads it is msvcrt.exe causing the CPU usage).  The only way to close the app is to terminate the process or log off the session.

This behaviour only happens when running as a RemoteApp.  If it is run in a full Remote Desktop session the issue does not occur.  The problem behavior happens with all versions of the RDC on WinXP SP3, Vista and 7.

The only thing we have found does sort of work is calling runonce /AlternateShellStartup from the logon script.  In this case the app will then work normally from the older RDC clients on Win XP and Vista  (but still not from any of the latest RDC clients)!  On a related note publishing the same app via Citrix fails when using old v9.15/9.20 Citrix clients but works successfully with newer Citrix clients.

So in my mind the issue seems to lie with something the latest RDC client is or isn't doing that is affecting the msvcrt.exe thread on the server.  Are there any patches or updates to the client coming up or does anyone know of any other tweaks that may help this focus/client issue?

Thanks,
Aaron
