Use batch file to determine if computer is a terminal server

Hello experts,
I am trying to create a batch file that I can use to install MS Office 2013 and another software on Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2012 terminal servers (Remote Desktop Services) via GPO. The installation files are NOT "msi" files.  Can you please tell me how I can use command line in a batch or script file to determine if a machine is a terminal server or not? I tried the Change user /query command on a Windows Server 2008 R2 terminal server and a Windows 7 machine and both machines returned the following status

Application EXECUTE mode is enabled.

which will be a problem because the installation batch file would treat the Windows 7 machines as a terminal server when it's not really a terminal server.

Basically, I want the batch file to check to determine if the machine is a terminal server. If it is a terminal server, then it would run change user /install, install the software, reboot server, then run change user / execute.  Your help will be greatly appreciated.

How to install RDP CALs pack on Windows Server 2012 R2 (member of NT domain)

OS: Windows Server 2012R2 (64-bit), member of NT (Samba 3) domain.

Task: install RDP CAL pack, to allow connecting above its default 3 sessions limit.

Problem: when setting up RDP licensing/other required service, I came to a problem: RDP access broker service requires AD type of domain to be installed.

The server is part of NT (Samba 3) domain and we have no intention to change domain type only to satisfy an auxiliary service.

Is it possible to enable additional RDP CALs on Windows Server 2012 R2 without mandatory joining an AD? The license control available up to Windows Server 2008 has been removed from Windows Server 2012, I can't bypass installing broker and the rest of related services.

Thank you for any information.

VDI - RemoteApp does not start in "Virtual machine-based desktop deployment" environment

Hello dear community,

I would like to familiarize myself to the subject of desktop virtualization and have built up a test environment for this purpose. Most went smoothly, but now I'm trying for days to figure out, why the deployed RemoteApp programs in my test environment not start. Unfortunately posts here and in other blogs were not helpful. I hope you can point me to the right direction. :)

My environment

Server 1
Windows Server 2012 R2 Std with the roles
    AD DS,
    DNS,
    DHCP

Server 2
Windows Server 2012 R2 Std with the roles
    Hyper-V,
Remote Desktop Services (Connection Broker, Virtualization Host, Web Access),
    IIS

VMs
Windows 8.1

RD Client 1
Laptop with Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 28, RemoteApp and Desktop Connections

RD client 2
iPad with Microsoft Remote Desktop App

Setting up the environment

The installation of the environment I made as mentioned in the following blog post. http://blog.itvce.com/?p=1569 But with only two physical servers.

What does work?

Prepared with SysPrep and "cloned" Windows 8.1 VMs created in the collections of virtual desktops are accessible via WebAccess (RDWeb) using IE, FF, Windows Start menu and also from the iPad as a complete desktop for authorized users/groups. The VMs wake up in Hyper- V from the saved state and roll back to it after the user logs off. So far so good.

What does not work?

Now to what does not work. One collection of virtual desktops I have reserved for the publication of RemoteApp programs. So this new collection - like the above - was created. The VMs were built and successfully registered in AD. Then I used "publish RemoteApp Programs" wizard in the collection. The available programs were successfully read from the VM. WordPad, Calc and Paint I used for the test. The programs/apps will then appear in RDWeb.

In RDWeb I now click on the Calculator, the warning described in many blogs appears that resources are passed through and then that the certificate could not be verified. Although I have already added the certificate to the trusted root CA in the user and the computer area, I acknowledge that I would like to connect despite the certificate error with "Yes".

After about 20 seconds the "Connect to ..." window disappears and that it was. In Hyper-V Manager the corresponding VM does not move even if it's running. If the VM was not running and in saved state, it is at least started. But the Calculator will still not start.

Can anyone give me a proper hint what to do, which Bing, Google and Technet did not have?

Thank you in advance!
Kay

PS: Since I am from Germany, I have asked the question first in the German forum. Unfortunately, without success.

AD "Log on to" restriction causes RDP connections with network level authentication to fail

I am running a Server 2008 R2 environment and have recently enabled network level authentication for RDP connections. Since the change, users who have their logons restricted to specific servers via AD, now get an error when logging on via RDP:

An Authentication error has occured
The Local security authority cannot be contacted

After investigating this error and reading technet I found that removing the "log on to" restriction within their user object solved the problem even tho they had rights to this server. Adding the users client PC name to the "Log on to" list also solves this issue.

My question is, is there another way around this? We have an environment where some users may require an RDP connection from a client PC not on the same domain (over VPN) as the server. It will not be practical to add many different client PC names to the log on to list and I don't understand why client PC's must be specified in the Log on to list and not just the actual server they are logging onto.

Any pointers appreciated

Hi,

Have some problems with manager. It used to work, but suddenly I can't connect to local server.

Get this error:

"The RD Gateway Managment snap-in console cannot connect to the server. To connect to this server, you must be a memeber of the local administrators group on the server."

The user account that i'm using is a member of the local administrator group.

Any ideas?

The RDS server is a Win2012 server. The AD server is a win 2008 R2 server.

Thanks

Playing Video smoothly (youtube or mp4 file) through RemoteApp or RDP into Win 7 from 2012

We're setting up a 2012 R2 RDS, and sending the RemoteApps into Windows 7, both Enterprise and ThinPC. Video playing is a problem - both youtube, and playing video files.

WMP will play fine in a full RDP session, but it becomes very glitchy when piped through a Remote App into Win 7 Thin PC or Enterprise. Youtube or Vimeo are very glitchy both in full RDP session and in IE Remote App.

What options have I got to get this working?

Both the Win 7 Thin PC and the Win 7 Ent clients are running the latest version of the RDP client (6.3.9600), supporting protocol 8.1.

The 2012 R2 hosts are fully up to date.   In IE, the Adobe reports the Flash version as 12.0.0.77, same in Chrome.  No surprise there, just one thing I was checking in the context of youtube being so glitchy and jumpy.

This termsvc team blog post talks about seamless multimedia experience on Win 8 & 2012 - but I don't think that it applies in our case since we are using Win 7 clients.

I'm new to terminal services, but from reading up about RemoteFX, it seems like there was a period during which RemoteFX had to be enabled by Group Policy, but that seems to no longer apply to my situation (where the clients support RDP protocol 8.1).  Is that correct, or are there some policies I should be enabling on my 2012 R2 hosts to enable the best multimedia experience for clients using RDP protocol 8.1 in Win 7?

RDS in MS Windows 2012

Hi,

Wanted to know if Microsoft provides any training/session specifically for RDS service(new feature in Windows 2012)

User Drive

We run a Server 2008R2 RDS environment with Citrix XA6.  We have several hundred users, using Citrix provisiong for the disk and we are using roaming profiles.  Users have home folders on a file share mapped to the U: drive, done through the account settings in Active Directory using the typical file share/account name format.  I have ONE user who, when they start and RDS session, doesn't see their U: drive in MyComputer.  However, if you go to the mapped drive and bring down the list of available drive letters, in an attempt to map it manually, then the drive mapping DOES show up.  Also, you can access the users folder by using U: in an address bar, like you normally would.  But, if you pull up a drive list or go to MyComputer or Windows Explorer, the drive doesn't show up.  Everyone is getting the same GPO's, the vDisk's are all the same and standard, no one else is having this problem.  I have searched around looking at common issues, but this doesn't quite fit with anything I have seen.  Anyone else have or seen this issue or can help?  Thanks for any info.

RemoteApp and Desktop Connections Error 0x800401F0 when updating RemoteApp connections from RDS webfeed

Environment:

Windows Server 2012 R2 with RDS roles installed.

Windows 8 clients

Issue:

The RDS Webfeed doesn't updated automatically. Instead, I get an error:

"An error occurred while updating this connection. Error code: 0x800401f0, 0x0"

I can perform a manual update in the control panel, but the users who will be using this on a regular basis are blocked from the control panel by a GPO.  Also, I don't want end users to have to perform this update manually anyway.

I've included a screenshot of the issue for reference.

Where is the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool in Server 2012 ?

Where is the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool in Server 2012 ?

This is an MMC snap-in found on earlier servers, even if RDS is not installed.  In Server 2012, even if the Remote Desktop Session Host role is installed, this tool is still not available.

I'm looking for the Server 2012 tool to adjust security settings like TLS authentication, High encryption level, choice of TLS certificate, NLA, etc.

Thanks!

When I am opening up an RDP session I'm getting the error below.

If I click ok, it opens right up.

I have a lot of RDP sessions open at one time sometimes 3 or 4.
I RDP into about 10-12 different machines at various times throughout the day.
Win7 64 bit,  8GB RAM

Brand new machines to move from XP end of life.
(I am also having a ton of Exceeds system resources errors running Access 2003--yes I know it's end of life for Office 2003 too. LOL)

ANY HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED!!!

Disabling RDP drive/device/clipboard redirection when connected from non domain machines

Hi,

We would like to disable drive/printer/clipboard/etc redirection when the RDP client is a machine that's not on the domain, and I can't seem to find any information about this.

Basically, when users RDP into a domain machines from another domain machine, we want them to have an unrestricted RDP sessions.  But when they RDP from a non domain machine (eg home machine over VPN), we want to restrict the ability to map drives and such.  Any suggestions?  We are in a Win2k8 AD env.  Right now we apply a GPO to domain workstations to limit RDP, but people are not happy about this.

Preferably, this would work regardless of where the client is located, but at the very least we want to limit RDP for VPN sessions.

Application crashes when opened by a second user on a RDS

We have a RDS server set up with several different pieces of business software.  Users could then log into the RDS, run the applications they need at the moment and log off.  This has been working well with the limited number of people we had been using.  Recently we had several users complaining the a certain application was crashing the moment the tried to load it.  This software only allows a user to open it once.  What we had found is that is one user had the program open.  No one else could open it.  Once the first user closed out of the application, than someone else could then open it without issues.

Does RDS not have a separation between sessions?  Maybe my lack of understanding how RDS works has confused me on what this server is truly capable of.

Thanks for any insight you can provide me!

Windows Server 2012 Essentials - Remote Desktop Services

$

Hi Experts,

I was hoping someone would be able to provide me with some guidance.

We have recently purchased Windows Server 2012 Essentials as well as 5 RDP user CALS.

We do not have a domain or any other servers. We only require 5 people from various locations to be able to remotely log into the server and work on a program that is installed on it.

However, the setup and configuration of the Remote Desktop Services did not go as planned. After many attempts and various configuration settings, it still doesn't work.

What I am lead to believe is that the Essentials version of Server 2012 doesn't support being the RDP Gateway and License Server and Host. However, nowhere can I confirm this, I have searched many forums where people are experiencing the same problems, but nowhere can I find answers.

If there is anyone out there that might be able to shed some light and maybe point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and Regards,

Wynand.

2012 R2 RDS Temporary Profile issue

I am having the same issue: I have a new Windows 2012 R2 server running AD and RDP. Everything was working great until I rebooted yesterday, and now when I log in at the server, it logs me in as an RDP user and a temporary profile.    My external RDP users log in just fine, and their profiles are okay.  What is Microsoft doing about getting a fix for this?

Office 2013 on RemoteApp Windows 2012 not rendering dialogs properly

Hi All,

We have a strange issue where Dialog boxes in Office randomly fail to render, for example go to Outlook 2013 Options and you get the sidebar, but none of the content but this is totally random and only on one environment.

We thought we had got rid of this with Tooltips disabled but we still get the odd random dialog that fails to render properly.

Wanted to see if anyone was aware of this or experienced it previously?

Thanks

RDS 2012 - HTTP & UDP Gateway Connections Reset

$

Hi

I have a single Windows 2012 R2 RDS server, which acts as all the RDS roles, including RD Gateway.

I also have an Windows 2012 R2 IISARR server setup to reverse proxy 443 connections to the server, and have port 3391 open on our firewall to allow UDP connections.

In short, if I connect using an RDP 8 client, I get three connections as expected. One HTTP and two UDP. If I connect using an RDP 7 client, I get one RPC-HTTP connection, again as expected.

The problem is that whereas the RPC-HTTP connection is stable, the HTTP & UDP connections disconnect every 2-5 minutes. The client screen goes black and a Reconnect Attempt 1/20 windows is displayed. Each time though the connection re-establishes itself and the session is not reset.

In the gateway manager, monitoring page, you can witness these connections disconnecting and re-connecting. It's very puzzling. The event logs acknowledge the disconnect, stating reason 0.

On the Windows 8 clients, I've tried the recent hotfix 2897602 and tried turning off Windows Location Services. But that doesn't help.

I've read a lot about UDP and RDP8, with some saying it doesn't work properly and that you should turn it off. However, I have it turned on as I was having problems scrolling PDF files in the remote session, which the UDP connections fixed.

Any help with this would be much appreciated. I've done so much research and spent so much time on it...

Thanks

Andrew
