Deploying RDS 2016

Hi everybody,
i am searching for quite a while now. I dont find a guide that fits my target solution.
Ideal solution:
1 Server as Session Broker / Web-Access (i dont want to use Web-Access)
2 Server as Session Hosts

The user should be Load Balanced between the two Session Hosts.

My Problem:
Some guides are with DNS Round Robin and others say to use the Session Broker as DNS entry.
DNS Round Robin: on redirection the user sometimes have to enter the password a second time.
DNS Session Broker: connection denied. the session broker is not redirecting the login.

Any advice how i can get the session broker to redirecting rdp connections?

- 3 servers are added at "all server" in server manager

thank you in advance.

Server 2016 report "Remote Desktop License Issue" when diagnotics say there is no issue

I have 4 Windows 2016 remote destop servers with a common license server. Recently when I remote into any of the servers I get the "Remote Desktop License Issue" error and the one-hour grace period.

However the remtoe desktop licensing diagnosis tool reports the correct license server, that I have 15 device CALs remaining available and everything is working correctly. Based on other threads such as this one:

I've tried configuring the license server via local policy instead of via the server manager tools, which makes no difference. The devices that already have CALs issued to them are working fine, even though it seems no new CALs will be issued even though the are available.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Special Settings for Single Users on an RDS Farm

$

Hi,

when deploying RDS you configure multiple settings, for example redirection of certain devices, multiple monitors, and so on. These settings are the defaults for alle users. When a user clicks on an icon a .rdp file is generated, a signature added and the .rdp file downloaded.

So how do you deal with 'special requirements' on single users, if the default does not match?

Example:
There is a Remote Desktop published with max monitors 2. Now the downloaded .rdp file defaults to two monitors.
What do you do, when a user only wants to use one monitor? Editing the .rdp file and save it to the users desktop? This breaks the signature, causing a warning for an "untrusted publisher" when connecting.

Is there a better way?

Thanks.

Hello Microsoft,

RDS 2019 should support the webcam feature but the isn't at the moment.

I've read some microsoft threads and can we support webcam on our RDS enviroment without to make changes on the client side?

- Domain GPO webcam enabled

- Webcam redirection RDS enabled

- Windows 10 privacy webcam enabled

Is there something i've missed?

RDWeb - HTML client works for only 2/3 session hosts in the farm!?

$

Hi All,

My RDS Farm setup is setup as follows...All servers are Windows Server 2019 STD.

Office Subnet...

  • RDSCBLS - Connection Broker, Licensing Server roles installed.
  • RDSWEBGW - RDS Gateway, RDWeb Server roles installed.
  • RDSSH01 - RDSSession Host role installed - RDP server for users to RDP into the office network.
  • RDSSH02 - RDSSession Host role installed -  RemoteApp host server hosting 2 remote apps

DMZ Subnet...

  • RDSSH03 - RDSession Host role installed - RDP server for users to RDP into the DMZ network.

The "legacy" RDWeb portal works a treat, everything connects and my users can work 100%.

Yesterday I decided to install the new HTML Client. I successfully installed version 1.0.21.0

I can successfully connect to the RDSSH01 & RDSH02 resources but not the RDSSH03 resource. I get a certificate error...

The Connection Broker certificate is trusted and successfully imported, RDSH01 launches a full RDS desktop 100%, RDSH02 launches it's RemoteApps 100%, but RDSH03 persists on giving me this error!?

What have I tried?

  • Entirely cleared browser cache, history and cookies - no dice!
  • Tried an entirely new never before installed browser - no dice!
  • Change the HTML Client settings from "Open resources in the browser" to "Download the RDP file" - this works!

The certificate in the error is not the connection broker certificate, it is the local self signed "Remote Desktop" certificate on the RDSH03 session host server underCert:\LocalMachine\My\Remote Desktop certificate store.

Additionally and this may be a bug - the cert is NOT an SHA1 certificate it is SHA2.

Any ideas how I can fix this as the neatly web page packaged RDS resources in the HTML client are exactly what my users are wanting...nice neat single pane of glass overview of ALL their RDS resources.

Microsoft Remote Desktop for Apple MAC by passing session host?

I have RDS farm deployed on server 2019. We have published remote desktop app so that the users can remote on to their work PCs from home. This works fine for windows and mac users from home.

For windows users I can see the session on one of the session host servers, but for Mac users using the "Microsoft Remote Desktop" app i can't see the session.

Also we have applied the setting so that users cannot copy and paste to and from the remote PC but this doesn't get applied to the Mac users. Is there a way to disable copy paste?

Hi,

I've come across this issue again. Now i have office365 pro plus 32 bit with officeE3 users. All the credentials are saved exept the outlook credentials. Every time i log in/out with a user and i start outlook the office365 login screen will come and you must enter the password everytime.

All the users are synced with azure AD.

I've tried the solution above but it still asking for the outlook password. (Teams, excel, word logins stay signed in)

Has anyone the same problem? Thanks in advance!

Outlook password prompt

Hi there

I am having an issue with being prompted for a password multiple times when accessing different profiles in Outlook on my remote desktop server.

I access multiple email accounts through different Outlook profiles, when accessing the different profiles i sometimes get a variety of different error messages such as

Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. The information store could not be opened,

-Outlook cannot log on. Verify you are connected to the network and are using the proper server and mailbox name. The Microsoft Exchange Information service in your profile is missing required information. Modify your profile to ensure that you are using the correct Microsoft Exchange information service.

-Trying to connect – need password.........and then just kicks us out without giving the ability to input a password.

Sometimes I am prompted for a password and when inputted it allows me no issues but other times it does not prompt for a password and i get these errors. Can you suggest what can be the cause and what i can do?

software versions are Windows Server 2016 Standard version 10.0.14393 and Outlook 2016 version 16.0.12730.20342 32-bit

Kind regards

George

Second RDG in other site in same farm for when 1st site is unavailable

Situation:

Current Farm (1RDG/RDW, 1RDB, 3RDSH + FSlogix) in Site A accessable via https://siteA.domain.com/rdweb with webfeed GPO

1 RDSH is in site B where it hosts remoteapps that need SQLDB access in Site B

Users in siteA have access to desktop and remoteapps in siteA and a few remoteapps in SiteB

Users in SiteB have full desktop and remoteapps in Site B and a few remoteapps in Site A

Goal:

We would like to have a manual failover when siteA goes down so users could go to https://siteB.domain.com/rdweb and have the Siteb desktop and remoteapps

Question:

Can I setup a second RDG and broker in Site B and manage them in the same farm? We are not talking about using NLB to have two RDG's, the sites are in different countries, just two RDG using a different public FQDN (sitea and siteb.domain.com)

it seems the server manager only allows one RDG

some suggest using two farms, but how will I get apps from site A in the rdweb of siteB and vice versa?

CSP RDS User CAL (Subscription)

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/licensing/news/rds-subscriptions?wa=wsignin1.0

I'm referring to the offering in the link above. This appears to be an annual or 3 year RDS User CAL subscription offered via the CSP channel.

So let's say I want to deploy a single server in Azure. There's no Active Directory, it's just a workgroup server running a single app. And let's say up to 5 users need to RDP to this server.

Traditionally I might purchase 5 x per Device RDS CAL's to achieve that. But it is stupid expensive CAPEX and puts off many small businesses from moving to Azure which is primarily subscription/pay-as-you go based.

My main concern is the RDS subscription offering states it is a User RDS CAL. You can't track per User RDS CAL's without Active Directory. So can these subscription licenses somehow be used in my scenario or converted to per Device CAL's on the RD license server? Will I get a RDS License Key as normal if I order this through CSP?

Hello,

I use Remote Desktop Connection manager v2.7. when RDP to WIN2016 servers, the credential cannot be inhered from parent level. However, when I connecting to WIN2012R2 servers, it works fine. Don't know the issue is cased by Remote Desktop Connection Manager or the configurations of WIN2016 servers? Thanks!

RemoteApp RDS2019 - splash screens stuck on client

$

Hi!

I am testing RDS 2019 with RemoteApp, and I have problems with startup splash screens. Each splash screen creates a button on the client’s taskbar and does not disappear from desktop and taskbar after the appearance of the main window. For example, I run three RemoteApp and I have three splash screens and three program windows on my desktop. And even if I close these windows, the splash screens will still remain on desktop and cannot be closed. This happens only in RemoteApp and does not occur with a remote desktop mode. I tried to recreate an RDS farm again, but it does not help.

This does not happen with all programs (having splash screen), but with many. At the same time, there were no such problems at RDS 2012R2/2016.

As RDCB and RDSH used Windows Server 2019 with latest cumulative update (2019-01). As clients used Windows 10 1709/1809 with same update.

Unable to Connect to RD Gateway Server External

I am a bit new to the secured RDS environments, and am working on configuring one to give it a try. I'm having an issue when trying to do a full remote desktop session from the web access, it states it is unable to reach the Remote Desktop Gateway server.

I have installed proper trusted and valid SSL certificates to RDS and IIS, and am able to login via web access without issue or certificate errors.

Configuration:
Server 1 | Name: AD1 | Services Active Directory, DNS, and RDS Licensing
Server 2 | Name: RDP1 | Services: RDS Gateway, Connection Broker, Session Host, Web Access

Port 443 is opened Internet -> RDP1
Port 80 is opened Internet -> RDP1
Firewall is directional, and all other ports in and out are denied.

Internally it does function properly. I have two test machines on the inside running Windows 10 (not members of the domain - stand alone), and both were able to connect after downloading the full desktop from web access. Below is a redacted image of the actual RDS configuration. Any pointers are GREATLY appreciated.

Remote Desktop Mobile open app?

I've installed Remote Desktop Mobile on my iPad and can access my cloud server with no issue.  However, rather than landing on the desktop and then launching an app, is it possible to configure the RDM client to automatically open the app?

Thanks!

Limiting apps to specific users in RD environment

$

We just moved servers offsite to a hosted service after a near disaster with onsite equipment. We have a VPN connection to the hosting service that allow printing directly to our IP printers across our sites and direct access from desktops to shared files and our DB2 server.

This has resulted in unacceptable latency with some applications, so we have migrated almost everyone to a 2016 RD server also at the hosting service. This has greatly improved performance as well as removed the task of deploying several applications to 50+ computers. These are full desktops, not remote apps, since we have too many apps to deploy them all as remote apps.

However, we have a site license for a particular accounting package that we do not want everyone to be able to use. Sometimes users just get too curious. We used to limit access to it by installing it only it on accountants' workstations. But in the RD environment, I need to install it on the server in a way that only specific users can run it.

My inclination is to create an AD group, then limit security for the program's EXE in its Program Files folder to include only the usual system admin accounts and the one AD group that needs the app.

Is this a good approach? The only approach? What about setting rights at the Program Files\ThisProgramFolder level instead of just the EXE?

Other/better ideas are welcome as are any pitfalls to avoid. After 20+ years of managing systems and 17 for this particular client, this is a first for me/us.
