Shared Printer Keeps Disappearing - Installed on RDS Server from Local PC

$

Hello there,

Here is the setup. I have a user who is working remotely. She uses remote desktop for one of her database-heavy applications. Unfortunately this application has trouble printing to redirected printers, and can only print to shared or local printers. This is per the company that provides our tech support for the application (NCR CounterPoint), so we have a local USB printer installed on her local computer. It is shared from the local computer and then installed on her profile on the remote desktop server.

She connects back to the office over a VPN. The remote desktop server is located back at the office. Her internet connection is fairly fast and reliable. Average ping time from my PC at the office to her PC at home is about 53ms. I originally suspected the internet connection, but I'm not totally convinced that's that problem. We have plenty of other users set up the same way on the same server, and they don't have this problem.

Through troubleshooting, it's seems that the shared printer can take a few minutes to show up in the Devices and Printers of her profile on the remote desktop server. Other times, it never shows up at all. No matter how long she leaves the session open. I have tried reinstalling the shared printer on her profile on the remote desktop server and sometimes will receive an error message that says something like, "Unable to connect to printer". I will restart the print spooler on both her computer and the remote desktop server, but this doesn't seem to make a difference.

I've even tried making her a local admin on the RDS server and sometimes this will allow me to reinstall the printer. Sometimes I will still get the same error message. I have dug through the event logs of both the server and her computer, but can't find anything that indicates what might be causing this to happen.

I've had her gracefully sign out of the RDS session by going to "Start -> Sign Out", as opposed to just disconnecting it. It doesn't seem to make a difference. She also uses a Remote App for one of her other applications, so I'm not sure if this is conflicting with her RDS session in some way. Again, we have other users set up this way and they seem to be fine.

The main issue is that the shared printer from her local computer installed on the RDS server just doesn't show up sometimes, and then she can't print. When it does show up, it stays there the whole time until she closes the RDS session. The next time she opens it, the printer may or may not appear.

She is using Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. The server is Windows Server Standard 2016 64-bit.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

RDP Client doesn't disconnect

I am using RDP client on Windows 8.1 to connect to a remote computer running Windows 7 Pro. When I click the "disconnect" option in the remote window (next to "logoff" on the "Start" menu) nothing happens. I can still disconnect by closing the remote windows with the x button. It used to work fine.

Any idea ho to fix it?

External client RDP'ing to internal network (NLA on, ntlm disabled). CAn connect to DC but nothing else.

I may finally be out of my depth. (Clients are not on the domain) . Clients = windows 10; servers 2016

My network has its own DNS, and the FQDN of the servers are not within public DNS. remote clients use a public FQDN that matches the IP of the serves. Internal everything is <server>.private.net. outside it is <server>.<company name>.com (the servers are clueless about their public fqdn).

Here is the thing. NLA on and NTLM off. Clients can RDP into the domain controllers! Obviously there are certificate errors, but let's live with that for the moment. However all member servers get is a "this function request is not supported" "this could be due to credssp encryption oracle remediation". ALL SERVERS ARE FULLY PATCHED,

Lets not forget that... remote clients can connect to the domain controllers.

Obviously users are not connecting to the domain controllers, its just me with a user account

We do have a RDP gateway (but I am testing without it to narrow down the problem),

RDP port ESTABLISHED but fail to connect

We have a Windows 10 PC at work that we use often to RDP to from home. Recently, we are no longer able to connect and it gives an error"This computer can't connect to the remote computer. The two computers couldn't connect in the amount of time allotted". Checked all available solutions online, but still no luck. The netstat command shows the port is ESTABLISHED with the client PC.  And the log Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-RemoteConnectionManager%4Operational.evtx shows the following msg: "RD Session Host Server role is not installed". Googled it, but didn't see anything mentioning a Windows 10 RDP server needs that or how to install the role.

The firewall on the RDP server has been turned off temporarily. The PC had been restarted a few times. We can ping the PC, and we can access it using TeamViewer.

Any suggestion what to check next will be appreciated.

RDS 2016 - Start Menu freeze

Hi all,

We're currently experiencing issues at a random interval with regards to freezing start menu's on Server 2016 RDS Hosts.
When the freeze happens we can see the following items in the eventlog: Event ID 5973

Seems to be related on a per user base, as multiple users can connect to the RDS server but only a few of them are experiencing issues.

We are using User Profile Disks and Start Menu redirection. Any thoughts?

"Activation of app Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy!CortanaUI failed with error: Not enough storage is available to complete this operation. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information."

"Activation of app Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy!CortanaUI failed with error: The RPC server is unavailable. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information."

"Activation of app Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy!App failed with error: The remote procedure call failed. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information."

Hi,

Everyday I have to reboot our RDS on Server 2016 because of failed login attempts for all users. Getting these errors:

An error occurred when transitioning from CsrConnected in response to EvCsrInitialized. (ErrorCode 0x80070057)

The Windows logon process has unexpectedly terminated. Event 4005, Winlogon

There was an expired certificate error which is resolved. There was also a licensing issue, which is also resolved.

Removing a Server From a Farm thingy

$

Hello

I am very used to managing Server 2008R2 RDS where we have a 5-server load-balanced farm using the Connection Broker.

I am setting up another 5 server farm (Collection?) using Server 2012R2 and the new management tools, underlying changes to the technology and terminology is making my head hurt a little.

I have set up the farm/collection the way I want it - using Load Balanced (via DNS Round Robin) Connection Broker and that seems to be working fine in testing.

However I cannot work out how to remove a server from the load balanced group.  In 2008 I would log onto the server and uncheck the "Participate in Connection Broker Load-Balancing" box in Session Host Configuration.

Can anyone advise how to remove a server from load balancing in Server 2012R2?

Many thanks
Paul

Load Balancing of RD Gateway Servers in 2012 R2

$

Hi,

So I have a basic test environment in order to design an RDP solution. I have two former Terminal Servers that both have the Session Host roles installed, one has the Connection Broker role the other has the Web Access role and BOTH have the RD Gateway roles. So basically, my two Session Hosts are also both RD Gateways and one is the broker and the other the Web Access.

I can connect to all of my member servers via RDP happily through the Gateway and when I open the Gateway Manager I can see every connection made. Three connections per session (1 x TCP and 2 X UDP). My issue is there doesn't seem to be any Load Balancing between the two Gateway Servers. Both servers are in a Farm and I have a DNS RR created for the Farm name. Also a collection has been made to include both Session Hosts and DNS records created for the Collection name, in the collection properties I have set Load Balancing to 100 Relative Weight for both servers.

For whatever reason every single connection goes through just one Gateway, no matter how many connections I make the second Gateway server never gets any connections. In the event of restarting or shutting down the active Gateway my live connections migrate across to the still reachable Gateway and any new connections from then on will also be made through the reachable Gateway, even when the unreachable Gateway is back up and running.

Happy that my live sessions migrate to the available Gateway in the event of losing one but can't figure out why the sessions will only be made through one Server and not spread between the two.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Andy

Remote Apps, Remote Desktop, VDI

Hello,

We are trying to build a high performance Remote Apps system for our infrastructure. We have a handful of applications that are windows only, and we have a large number of Macs in our organization that need the same access as our Windows users. We want to expand our current delivery from from just the few low resource apps (IE for certain IE only web portals, ms office, etc) we're serving, to also provide a great experience for users of our video surveillance system, as well as our security suite of door alarms, badges, locks, etc.

My supervisor asked me to build something above the norm. He then started introducing additional ideas, but I believe he has confused, or maybe just fused a few different systems. After doing a little research, it appears concepts he mentioned such as VDI may not even apply here.

I don't think we want or need VDI, or Remote desktop. What we want is strictly remote apps, and I would appreciate it if some folks could give me some engineering workflow suggestions for setting this up for good performance. I said we have a large number of Macs, but providing a reliable Remote apps system for say 100 CALs should suffice.

So Far I have 1 Dell Poweredge R730 with 1 Nvidia Grid K2 GPU, dual CPU and more than enough memory. 8 TB on 6 SAS disk (7.2k) with Raid 5. Server 2019 installed.

Some of the ideas , terms I've run into (But not completely sure they apply specifically to Remote apps):

  • Using VDI (Hyper V) to some how serve individual sessions or each user.
  • Using a Remote Apps server cluster (farm). Why?
  • Using multiple Session Broker servers. Why?

We currently have a single Poweredge R720 running Win 2012 R2 with no GPU acceleration. It functions Okay, but somewhat lackluster.

Any suggestions or good blogs greatly appreciated.

Windows RDWEB anonymous authentication

Hi All

We want to publish an application through RDWEB, and this app got its own user name and password (not ad integrated).

We want anyone from internet who can access our rdweb url (https://server.com/rdweb) to be able to see the app without prompts for credential and the user will open the app and enter his credentials to work with it.

Basically these users will be using their own laptops and would not have any credentials in company domain other than username and password for the app.

Any suggestions ?

Hi Guys,

I  have a problem with redirection of local client webcam to Session Hosts in  RDS 2019 Farm.

the farm is composed of:

-2 RD Web Access (HA configured)

-2 RD Connection Broker (HA Configured)

-1 RD Gateway and Licensing

-12 RD Session Host

OS: Windows Server 2019 64Bit 1809

I have already performed these steps:

-GPO "Allow audio and video playback redirection" (enabled)

-GPO "Do not allow supported Plug an Play device redirection" (Disabled)

-GPO "Allow RDP redirection of supported RemoteFX USB devices from this computer" (enabled)

-GPO "Enable RemoteFX encoding for RemoteFX client designed for WIndows Server 2008 R2 SP1" (enabled)

-In the Broker Server i have run in powershell --> Set-RDSessionCollectionConfiguration -CollectionName "CollectionNAME" –CustomRdpProperty “usbdevicestoredirect:s:*”

Hello colleagues

When we are doing such config (enable multiple sessions per user):

Computer Configuration\ Administrative Templates\ Windows Components\ Remote Desktop Services\ Remote Desktop Session Host\ Connections

Restrict Remote Desktop Services users to a single Remote Desktop Services session     Disabled

We are not able to reconnect to any disconnected session that was running previously.

It seems that it was mentioned here for Inside build, but we have same...

Any solutions for this problem?

Windows Server Standard 2007 SP2 2007

When I right click on My Computer and go to properties I am told:

Windows Server Standard

Copyright 2007 .....

Service Pack 2

Today I had to delete a number of sessions.  I did not know how to do that.  Do I googled "windows server standard 2007 remote desktop stop a session".

The answers to this question all started the same:

On the RD Session Host server, open Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration. To open Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration, clickStart, point to Administrative Tools, point to Remote Desktop Services, and then click Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration

I click on Start, I click Administrative Tools, there is no Remote Desktop Services!!!  Every answer refers to Windows Server 2008 R2.  I finally searched on this site for windows server standard 2007 and actually got a bunch of hits.  There was actually a person who had my problem.  Instead of anyone answering his questions it behooved the people who answered (some sarcastically) there is no Windows Server 2007 with links to listing of Windows Operating Systems.

How can I find Remote Desktop Services and Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration. I have sessions still running from months ago.

RemoteApp with no login

Is it possible to have RemoteApp be completely publicly available with no login?  We have a client who because of corporate polices won't accept our ClickOnce application (they don't allow auto-updating applications and since our ClickOnce app does automatically update when a new version is available it is not allowed).  My next thought was to publish the app as a RemoteApp and they just access that (we'd have to manually update the RemoteApp when any new version is available but we can automate that).

Ideally, I want this to not require any login of any type for RemoteApp.  The RemoteApp server will be safely in a DMZ, Firewall rules will only allow connections to the server from our client site over a VPN we will create between the client and ourselves, and our application has its own login method (not AD integrated).  So ideally, I'd like to deploy the RemoteApp where the client's users just launch the RemoteApp, enter the application's credentials and that is it.  No need to enter any domain logins/etc.

I've been playing with this trying to make every setting I can find say "everyone" can access it, but it always still requests a domain login/password.  Is there any way to basically make the RemoteApp "public" and not require login/password at all for RemoteApp?

Stuck at "configuring remote session"

Hi all,

I cannot establish a RDP connection from two of my devices and I manage with other two.

1. From this device I cannot connect internally, when trying to connect to:

a. servername - stuck at configuring remote session
b. ipv4 - stuck at configuring remote session
c. ipv6 - it does connect!

This device is running Windows 10 1904

2. From another device I manage to connect in all 3 ways INTERNALLY, but does not connect externally.

This device is running Windows 10 Enterprise

When I ping from this device it replies only with ipv6.

3. Another device is trying to connect externally and it doesn't connect at all, because my port forwarding is configured based on ipv4. So I cannot connect externally at all from any PC.

4. From my mobile phone it does connect from external, which makes me very confused all together..

It seems like when trying to connect via ipv4 it get stuck and some devices choose to connect via ipv4 and some via ipv6....

RDS 2016 License server error TSLS group, plus licenses never show issued, and auditing does not show any licenses issued

I have a brand new WORKING license server for 2016 RDS.   By working I mean, I have a 2012 R2 session host that has its trial expired, but when pointed to this server, it allows users to logon. (when it won't logon otherwise)

The problem is that I need it to audit my license usage, and less of a problem, but I am annoyed by the configuration error (which I suspect is related to my problem) which states it cannot determine the status of the TSLS group.

The issue appears to be some kind of AD communication issue, but I have another server in another subnet (and AD site) which works fine.     This particular site in AWS, but it has local domain controllers, and doing a network trace shows it only connects to them and makes no attempts to go elsewhere.   It also shows LDAP queries for the TS information succeed.

Again, license server works fine, but it does not show any licenses with the status of "issued" and if I create a report, it has zero linfo in it.  (as if none have ever been checked out)

I build a second 2016 TS license server in AWS, and it exactly replicated the issue..  At this point I can't really think of what might be causing the issue.

Googling the errors I have found so far has resulted in a few people with similar issues, but none with a solution.  I'm not sure this problem is worth a $500 MS support ticket, but it seems someone out there should have solved this before..  Everything is super generic here..

When connecting to a user via remote desktop Manager if the user is pointed to something I don't see a change in the cursor position. Only visible if the user clicked on something. (the user says that he moves the mouse at me it is in 1 position). Is it possible to see the user's mouse movement?

RDP Web Clients get Black Screen randomly

$

Hi we have a HA env't built for our RDP ENv't

2 RD Connection Brokers

1 Licensing Server

3 RD Web Access Servers

5 RD Session host Servers

2 RD Gateway Servers

we have 3 Collection - Contractors, Employees, Guests

The Env't has been built for a few months the Contractor and Guests is working fine - moderate users maybe 25 on at a time.

The Employee Collection at this time only has about 10 users for Piloting....many of the users at different times of the day get a random black screen and cannot work.

We tried to figure it out, but then gave up and ended up deleting on of the UDP Session Host Servers and redeployed the VM to a different ESXi Host, rebuilt the Session Host and for the past week it has been fine.

I wanted to do a full healthcheck, best practises on the env't as we did not setup this env't - it was built by a consulting firm who no longer is helping.  Any suggestions on how to determine if things are setup right, what could be improved, missing...?

Thanks,
