I plan to install a server as remote desktop terminal for 5 users (instead of using 1 pc desktop for each user for their remote desktop terminal). I plan to buy HPE ML30G10 and Windows 2019 standard edition. What license do I need for 5 concurrent remote desktop connections? Can I configure the server as workgroup? I'm confused with the many Windows licensing schemes.
Need advice about licensing
Mapping Drive Only When Connected to RDS Session
Hi,
I have a RDS 2012 server I stood up. I would like every user who connects to this server to be able to access a specific drive mapping. How can I create the mapping to be available to all users RDP'ing into this server?
Thank you
Please help me setup terminal server or RDS.
Hi everyone, I need help setting up a terminal server / RDS VM.
I have approx. 20 users who will need to remote into a win10 client VM. So i am trying to setup a RDS on a VM (either datacenter 2016 or 2019).
1. can i run this from 1 VM?
2. Do i need a separate DC?
3. Do i need to purchase my own domain name ?
4. do i need to purchase a SSL Certificate?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, even a "dummies guide to setting up Terminal server"
thank you
Stephen

Unable to shadow using mstsc unless run as admin elevated on RDS 2019
Running RDSH on Window Server 2019. I'm looking at allowing users to shadow other users but I've hit a bit of a problem. Cross-reference with this very old thread:
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/ie/en-US/b677a5a6-24de-4047-ab69-d2d9ae3baf64/shadow-only-for-administrators?forum=winserverTS
It mentions using mtstc /shadow:session /control. There is lots of discussion about permissions but I couldn't get it to work. But then I tried it using the domain admin account - which is able to shadow from Server Manager collections - and even it couldn't run the above command. You get this error:
However, if you run it from Powershell (Admin), i.e. elevated - then it works fine.
So this one isn't really about shadowing permissions as such but more having to run mstsc.exe as an administrator. Which is a bit of a showstopper as we are not about to give normal users admin rights on the RDS server.
Any ideas?
Drag n Drop from RDS to Local PC.
Hello
We have a RDS server with a published SAP program (SAP resides on another server) which users connect over the Internet to. It all works OK, apart from when you open the attachments folder on SAP (it uses explorer) and try to either drag n drop or copy n paste a file to or from the local PC, you don't seem able to do it. If you connect to the RDS server normally using the RDS client (mstsc program) you can do it, but not using the published web app way.
Any ideas on this?
Many thanks.

Remote Desktop Session Screen locks faster than set in Group Policy
Good Afternoon,
I have come across an issue that I am struggling to resolve, I have searched the forums and cant seem find anything on them regarding this specific topic. So apologies if this has been discussed before and .
I have set up a group policy to automatically lock all screens after 5 minutes of inactivity. (Computer Configuration>Policies>Windows Settings>Security Settings>Local Policies>Security Options>Interactive logon: Machine inactivity limit)
Domain server is Windows 2012 R2.
All the windows 10 machines will adhere to this and lock after 5 minutes of inactivity. The issue lies in the remote desktop.
We have 3 terminal servers running (Server 2012 R2) Which have picked up the above settings and show 5 Mins (300 seconds). However, they are locking after 3 minutes (I have timed it on multiple users accounts on all 3 servers).
I have then tried changing the policy on the domain server to 10 mins (600 seconds) as a test, but they still lock after 3 minutes. The windows 10 machines change to 10 minutes and function as should.
Has anyone come across this before or have any suggestions on how to resolve.
Thanks

Prevent 'Administrator' RDP session collision on windows 2016 server edition
Hi
I have searched through the existing answers and looked through other content online but I am unable to get it working
This is for Windows Server 2016 Edition All I am looking to achieve is - Permit a single RDP remote session to the server. I do have out of band (remote hands access) in cases of emergencies
If there is an existing "Administrator" RDP session then another person trying to attempt RDP using "Administrator" should get their access rejected
Currently these second attempts are taking over first connection - which is undesirable
I don't want to involve terminal servers or any complications. We are stuck with Windows Server 2016 because of other unrelated operational reasons and can't use a desktop edition.
We simply want to be able to RDP to the windows server without having connection thrashing issues
Answers found online that mention Group Policy have unfortunately NOT worked
Any Ideas?
Printing with autentication from RDS server
Hello,
I have the following problem in this moment. I have a windows server 2019 with RDS role install and configurated, when i try to print to a printer that need windows autentication (my login session) that is in a other print server i get a windows that ask me to put my credencial (login and password), i put my credencial and do ok and i get windows warning with the message "Entered [Login User Name] or [Login Password] is different. Enter correct [login User Name] or [Login PAssword]."
And i dont pass from this step. If i do this test with a user session that have local administration permission in the RDS server i have no problem to print the document.
What is the problem with the users session that dont are local admin of the RDS server for printing? Can someone help me?

WMF logo in header doesn't show up in Remote Desktop session
We use WMF files for our logos in the header of our documents. These go back maybe 10 years.
I have a few users that, when they Remote into their office workstations (Dell Precisions, Windows 10 updated, 32GB RAM - decent specs) and they open a Word file (both .doc and .docx) they do not see the WMF logo. They say they can click it like it's there, but it doesn't display and they can't print it to PDF either (and it doesn't display in the print preview dialog either).
I as an admin have logged into their machine under my own account, and I can see the WMF logo in all documents.
I then had the user log into MY computer in the office (same spec and same general office image) and the user STILL cannot see the graphic.
We have compared Remote Desktop settings and they all match. We are using SonicWall's NetExtender for our VPN connection.
Can anyone think of why this might be happening? Could the WMF be tripping a security something or other on a user account and not on an admin account?
RemoteApp Launch Timeout
Hello all,
We've been having an issue lately with a specific app we use over RemoteApp - it's essentially a program built inside of FileMaker.
When people launch the RemoteApp, the FileMaker client can sometimes take 10-15 seconds before it actually shows any GUI (but the process launches immediately). When running as a full Remote Session, or directly on the server, this is no problem. However, it
seems when that GUI doesn't show fast enough, the RemoteApp Connection Times out (The icon in the System Tray that shows we're connected to a Remote App Session disappears as well). If they relaunch the RemoteApp (via the RDP file), the process is already
running since the user session was just disconnected and not logged off, and the app is fine.
It's not really too much of an issue, but obviously it does cause some frustration with users. I've been searching for an answer, but I can't seem to find one. Is there a configurable timeout for the RemoteApps that I can set?
This is in a Domain Environment.
All the client machines are running Windows 10 Pro. Servers are running 2016 Standard in a Hyper-V environment.
The app is FileMaker Pro 17 Advanced.
Any thoughts?
Remote Desktop Gateway issue
Hi!
I've installed a Remote Desktop Gateway on Windows Server 2016, it worked perfectly last week. Today some users are having issues trying to connect to their workstations through RDG, but when they try to connect rdp directly (connected to the VPN) it works, and then became available and starts to work trough RDG again.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
RD Licensing server setup error - "unrecognized response"
Hi all,
I get the following error when trying to activate an RDS Licensing server.
The specifications...
- Brand new Windows Server 2019 Standard VM
- Domain joined
- Server Activated with MAK key via telephone method as this environment is not allowed to get general internet.
- Proxy configured to allow server access to https://clearinghouse.one.microsoft.com
The error...
I can't find any event logs that correspond to this error message popping up? The only thing I can think is wrong here is the proxy config and or I am missing additional URLs required for successful RDS licensing loading / activation tasks?
P.S> I am also correct in believing I can have many RDS licensing servers in many networks so long as I do not exceed my enterprise agreement RDS user CAL limit as assigned to my agreement?
E.G. when you activate an RDS License server it asks you how many CALS do you want to load into the server...
Thanks in advance...
durrie.

Licenses RDS 2019.
We have purchased additional licenses for the use of the remote desktop. We have received RDS 2019 licenses while the server is in version 2012 R2.
When installing the licenses the license number is refused.
How can I increase the number of licenses?
Thank you for your answers

Very specific RDS deployment question
Good afternoon,
I have a complicated RDS 2016 setup. And it is almost one of those Microsoft questions you get on your exam.
Use case:
Internet users connect from the internet over a vpn to a vdi of company A. These vdi's run Windows 7.
From there it is possible to reach a RDS gateway in a separated network from company B, that is not connected to the internet. At this moment they cannot connect to this RDS deployment.
The deployment is as follow:
RDS Server 1: RDS host
RDS Server 2: RDS host
RDS Server 3: RDS Gateway/broker and web server
RDS Server 4: License server and profile store.
This RDS deployment in the network of company B uses a certificate signed by a CA of company A so that the vdis can trust the certificate. But this rds broker is from company B and his CA does not trust this certificate (Is that a problem?)
The network of the 2 companies are fully separated. They only share 1 thing and that is 1 subnet to connect to each other (directly without internet)
Users that try to connect from the vdis from company A get the following error when they try to connect to the RDS gateway of company B.
