Problem with RDP

Hi,

Lately I'm having problems with an RDP server, from time to time I have errors like:
Service Control Manager ID 7011 The timeout (180000 ms) for the transaction response of the NcbService was exceeded.
Service Control Manager ID 7011 The timeout (180000 ms) for the transaction response of the UmRdpService service has expired.
And finally comes an error like this:
Service Control Manager ID 7046 The following service has been stopped repeatedly in response to service control requests: Port Redirector in Remote Desktop Services user mode.

I have to restart the server to be able to log in again.
The server is monitored with Zabbix and has no RAM or CPU problems.
I don't see other errors in event viewer.

I have already tried solutions like: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/it-pro/windows-server-2008-R2-and-2008/cc756319(v=ws.10)?redirectedfrom=MSDN

Increasing the timeout doesn't solve the problem. Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

Marcos

[VDI] Cannot open session

Hello, I am a student who enjoys Windows Server very much. I would like to set up a VDI infrastructure at home for testing purposes. Here is a summary of my infra:

- Service Broker + Gateway = VM (Windows Server 2016 Datacenter)

- Virtualization host = Dell PowerEdge R620 physical server (Windows Server 2016 Datacenter)

- DC = Dell Precision T3610 physical server (Windows Server 2016 Datacenter)

My current problem is as follows: when I log in to the "Remote Desktop Access via the Web", I see my collection of personal desktops that I have created. But, as soon as I download the.rdp file, I enter my credentials, and I find that the RDP window allowing me to access what I assume is the VM opens for a microsecond, then closes without any error or message.

I also noticed that I sometimes connected to the Service Broker, which is problematic.

Do you have a solution?

Thank you in advance! :)

Cannot find a way to prevent a session for being stolen

Hallo,

my configuration is this one:

   1) Server Win2008R2

   2) RDP services configured and working, let's say, for three accounts

   3) People across the company (and from different locations) know theese accounts and use them to get access to the server via RDP  client

The problem is this one: If one user, "user1", connects with account "A" and works normally and then, if another user, "user2", connects from another location with the same acount "A" THEN the "user2" steals the session to "user1" just taking over the user1' session.

I want to prevent user2 to login with account "A" and taking over the active session of user1

Is there a way ?

thanx for the support

remote logon not possible - clear destination host

Hi there,

we have a terminal server farm with 12 hosts and on session broker.
Sometimes I want to lock one host and ask the users to re-logon to get them to a different host.

But it seems that the session broker (or the client) cached the last redirection and shows the user that no remote logons possible at the moment.

How can I clear this cache?
And where can I see to wich host the session broker redirected the client?
(I did not find the right log for that info)

Is there somebody who could help me?

Thanks in advance
Reiner

Failing to deploy Remote Desktop Services on fresh Windows Server 2019 domain

Hi

I am having trouble deploying an RDS environment. My deployment plan was this:
1. Install RD Connection Broker, RD Licensing, RD Web Access and RD Gateway role on my domain controller (dc01)
2. RD Session Host on my other virtual server (rds01 - fresh install, only joined to domain)

Step-by-step of how I installed this:
(on dc01)
1. Manage > Add Roles and Features > Next
2. Select "Remote Desktop Services installation" > Next
3. Select "Standard deployment" > Next
4. Select "Session-based desktop deployment" > Next > Next
5. Add "dc01.corp.contoso.com" as RD Connection Broker server > Next
6. Add "dc01.corp.contoso.com" as RD Web Access server > Next
7. Add "rds01.corp.contoso.com" as RD Session Host server > Next
8. Select "Restart the destination server automatically if required"
9. Confirm rds01 is online and reachable
10. Hit "Deploy"
* at this point it takes about 5 minutes before the first error shows up

RD Connection Broker role service: dc01.corp.contoso.com - Failed
Error message: "Failed: Unable to set the RD Session Host server running in redirection mode because the RD Connection Broker server is unreachable."
Event viewer error: "RD Connection Broker Configuration Failed on DC01.CORP.CONTOSO.COM With Error: Unable to save the RD Session Host server redirection settings."
RD Web Access role service: dc01.corp.contoso.com - Succeeded
RD Session Host role service: rds01.corp.contoso.com - Succeeded

Continuing, I try to install RD Gateway role on dc01:
Step-by-step of how I installed this:
(on dc01)
1. Server Manager > Remote Desktop Services > Overview
2. Click "RD Gateway" (big green plus + sign)
3. Add "dc01.corp.contoso.com" as RD Gateway server > Next
4. Set SSL certificate name to "rdgw.contoso.com" > Next
5. Configm selections > Add
* at this point it takes about 2 minutes before the first error shows up

Remote Desktop Gateway role service: dc01.corp.contoso.com - Failed
Error message: "Failed: Unable to create a Remote Desktop resource authorization policy on dc01.corp.contoso.com. The error is Object reference not set to an instance of an object.. Please check the eventlog on RD Gateway server for more info."
Event viewer errors(e) and information(i) (order old to newest)
Error:          RD Gateway Configuration Failed on dc01.corp.contoso.com With Error: Failed to create RAP for Domain Computers group. Error = 0
Information:    The resource group "RDG_RDCBComputers" was created.
Error:          RD Gateway Configuration Failed on dc01.corp.contoso.com With Error: Failed to create new RD Connection Broker Computers group. Error = 0
Information:    The resource authorization policy "RDG_RDConnectionBrokers" was created.
Error:          RD Gateway Configuration Failed on dc01.corp.contoso.com With Error: Failed to create RAP for RD Connection Broker Computers group. Error = 0
Error:          RD Gateway Configuration Failed on dc01.corp.contoso.com With Error: Unable to create a Remote Desktop resource authorization policy on dc01.corp.contoso.com. The error is Object reference not set to an instance of an object.. Please check the eventlog on RD Gateway server for more info.

Now you see the informations doesn't really add up with the errors. If I go to RD Gateway Manager application all RAP and CAP are created as well. However,

Additional information:
* The environment consists of one domain controller (dc01.corp.contoso.com) and one remote desktop session host (rds01.corp.contoso.com)
* The environment is totally fresh, have only installed AD DS beforehand (was going to use this deployment internally for techs)
* The servers are volume licensed
* Both servers have internet connection
* DNS is working

What I have tried:
* Rebooting
* Re-installing all remote desktop services roles
* Re-installing OS on both servers
* Re-installing domain
* Windows Update
* Disable any GPO that hit the domain controller
* Checked to see if any local group policies exist on the target server
* Installing from PowerShell
* Installing with another domain administrator account
* Installing the role on the rds01 server
* Using DISM to repair from original image
* Quick start deployment
* Standard deployment
* This exact deployment procedure was used at a customer last week, where everything is working just fine.

Does anyone have a clue what is going on? What am I doing wrong...

Thanks in advance.

Windows Search changes in Server 2019 RDS

Hi,

So nothing like being on the cutting edge......

I have been testing Server 2019 RDS and so-far-so-good apart from an issue with the Windows Search Service.

It appears that in Server 2019 each user gets their own search database EDB file in their profile path (appdata\roaming). e.g.

C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\S-1-5-21-3901271148-1553943383-1671037523-1629\S-1-5-21-3901271148-1553943383-1671037523-1629.edb

When they log on and log off; this is connected to the search service and the following event log is generated

Source:ESENT
EventID: 326
SearchIndexer (10896,D,50) S-1-5-21-3901271148-1553943383-1671037523-1629: The database engine attached a database (3, C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\S-1-5-21-3901271148-1553943383-1671037523-1629\S-1-5-21-3901271148-1553943383-1671037523-1629.edb). (Time=0 seconds)

Unfortunately it appears that this process is not very stable and on some logons the database in the users profile does not attach and the following error is generated

Source:Search
EventID: 3057
The plug-in manager <Search.TripoliIndexer> cannot be initialized.
Context: S-1-5-21-3901271148-1553943383-1671037523-1629 Application

Source:Search
EventID: 3028
The gatherer object cannot be initialized.
Context: S-1-5-21-3901271148-1553943383-1671037523-1629 Application, SystemIndex Catalog
Details: The specified object cannot be found. Specify the name of an existing object.  (HRESULT : 0x80040d06) (0x80040d06)

And a few more similar but related errors....

No subsequent logon/off will succeed in attaching the database until the Windows Search service is restarted

I am not testing with User Profile Disks or Roaming Profiles
There is no AV on the server

Any ideas?

User CAL or Device CAL on a jump.application server

$

Hi,
I've been asked to setup a server running Windows Server 2016 Essentials to replace a rickity old server. I need to get this right and have sort of gone around in circles on Youtube and searching the Internet.

Essentials comes with 25 user CAL and 50 device CALs. We're planning on deploying a single server that will have a local domain controller (on the server).

There are about 100 people who will log into the server for about 10 - 20mins/day (maybe even 20mins/week).

Do I need a user CAL for each user in the AD that wants to connect to the server or does the CAL simply limit the number of concurrent users (people using the server at the same time), and do I need a separate RDS CAL for each user.

This server will need to communicate with a number of other back end servers through SMB, SQL and RDS. Is this where the device license comes in? because I want multiple users on this server to communicate with another device.

Appreciate I should get this, but its very different building a real world application and something you throw together in a virtual lab.

Thanks

Indexing of the server after joining it to a collection

I have 3 terminal hosts that is part of the collection.

I have added the windows search feature and then made sure to enable the service and turn to start automatically.  But when I go to the indexing icon in control panel  it does not show the local disk drive.

 I found this article: https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/29142044/Windows-Search-not-working-when-Remote-Desktop-Session-Host-is-installed-on-Server-2019.html

It was June from last year, basically it's and issue and there is no workaround.

Wondering if anyone else had this issue and was able to fix it.

how to disable RD Connection broker load balancing

Hi All,

I have a RDS Farm with 1 RD broker and 2 session host servers on windows server 2012 R2.

I want to disable RD Broker load balancing but still want to use broker for managing broker the sessions centrally.

Is it possible to have broker only manage connection table for re connection of existing sessions and the load balancing part done with F5 load balancer?

Somehow broker is not doing the load balancing for NATed IP.

Abhishek

After installed RDS CAL per device for Windows 2019, I get the following message

Number of license available: 0

The Remote Desktop Session Host server is in Per Device licensing mode and No Redirector Mode, but license server ig8906.com does not have any installed licenses with the following attributes:
Product version: Windows Server 2016
Licensing mode: Per Device
License type: RDS CALs or VDI Premium Suite licenses

Can someone advise if i need purchase RDS CAL 2016 license for my 2016 server? or changing configuration can fix this issue?

Thanks

USB Redirection for Publish apps in VDI using RDS

Hi Experts!

quick question, Is it possible to have a USB redirection in VDI Publish Apps ? In pooled we have simply access the usb but on our publish apps  we're not able too.  As you can see on the RD web page the drive L2 folder is created for USB redirection for publish user who they have access. And on the RWMVDPOOL desktop icon this is for pooled user which we're able to see the USB removable devices. Is there a step how to resolve on usb redirection for publish user in VDI.?

HTML5 Client zoom

Hi,

I have recently started rolling out the HTML5 client and have had an issue raised, in that using Control + in PhotoShop zooms in on the application but Control - will zoom the Browser window out and crash the session.

Has anyone found a fix for this or know a way to stop this happening? It seems like the key combination isn't being directed to the webpage.

Many thanks

USB drive redirection in RDWeb Access

Hello,

Need to enable USB Redirection for all users in RDWeb Access.

I have configured the below mentioned group policy on RD Connection broker and RD session Host but unable to redirect USB removal device (HDD) in RDWeb Access.

Group Policy Path: “Computer Configuration” --> “Administrative Templates” --> “Windows Components” --> “Remote Desktop Services” --> “Remote Desktop Connection Client” --> “RemoteFX USB Device Redirection”.

Double-click on “Allow RDP redirection of other supported RemoteFX USB devices”.

This opens a window to change the policy settings. Select the “Enabled” radio button. Under “Options”, set the “RemoteFX USB Redirection Access Rights” to “Administrators and Users”. Also, I have observed that USB removal drive redirection in working fine in my VDI collection.

Please assist.

Thank you.

Parallel RDP connection to terminal server and LSASS.exe crash

Dear all,

I am having serious problems while connecting using VPN to RDP to terminal server using smartcard. While I try to log in from one machine it works flawlessly (even it is quite slow). However, when I try to login concurrently from 2 machines using smartcard, I got an error saying that there is no smartcard present, or there are no authentication certificates. Once I get such error, the terminal server is restarted (WS2012R2, WS2016, WS2019 - tested on all versions). In the event log, there is an error lsass.exe crash with status code -1073740940. As this happens only sometimes, we cannot easily reproduce it, but the chance that the server will crash on Kerberos authentication is much higher when 2 clients are connecting concurrently.

Do you have any ideas where might be a problem?

RD Gateway cannot use saved credentials (Win7 -> Win2012r2)

I am using RemoteApps. Everything works fine when I setup the RemoteApps using control panel. All Apps are available in the start menu and I can launch them fine. When I disconnect and reconnect it only works fine when I am not using a RDGateway.

As soon as I use a Gateway the reconnect fails and I have to re-enter my RD Gateway Server Credentials. When I input it again it works fine. It just won't save.

The credentials are in Credential Manager and appear to be correct. There are two:

  1. the gateway in the form: gateway.example.com
  2. the remote host: TERMSRV/rdhost.example.com

When the password prompt appears windows deletes the first credentials from credential manager.

The following events are logged in the eventlog on the client:

  • RDP ClientActiveX is trying to connect to the server (rdhost.example.com)
  • RDPClient_Gateway: An error was encountered when transitioning from AAStateAcquireAuthToken to AAStateError in response to 20 (error code 0x80070005).
  • RDPClient_Gateway: An error was encountered when transitioning from AAStateCreatingOutChannel to AAStateError in response to 3 (error code 0x80070005).
  • RDPClient_Gateway: An error was encountered when transitioning from AAStateInitializingTunnel to AAStateError in response to 6 (error code 0x80070005).
  • The multi-transport connection has been disconnected.

Apparently I am the only one with this problem as google had nothing for me :(

Hello colleagues

When we are doing such config (enable multiple sessions per user):

Computer Configuration\ Administrative Templates\ Windows Components\ Remote Desktop Services\ Remote Desktop Session Host\ Connections

Restrict Remote Desktop Services users to a single Remote Desktop Services session     Disabled

We are not able to reconnect to any disconnected session that was running previously.

It seems that it was mentioned here for Inside build, but we have same...

Any solutions for this problem?

Windows Server 2016 with Remote Desktop Services Role - how to manage memory allocation for users

$

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if you know a way to manage memory allocation for users that connect to a Windows Server 2016 with the Remote Desktop Services role installed?

We currently have 512 GB of RAM and we have an average of 60 - 70 users connected daily on the server (only 1 instance). Users are reporting that the server is slow and I can see that only 80 - 90 GB or RAM is in use, everything else is on Cached memory.

Any ideas?

Thank you very much

Smartcard access

Hello,

Is it possible to access a smartcard in local machine from where RDP session is generated to connect to the server where smart card is physically connected ??

Remote Desktop Session Host server is within its grace period, but the RD Session Host server has not been configured with any license server

$

We have one terminal server with Win Server 2012 R2, and one Linux file server. The Linux file server is also the Domain Controller.

The Windows server should be running terminal services for the business programs which need a Windows platform. We are continuously getting the following error message: "Remote Desktop Session Host server is within its grace period, but the RD Session Host server has not been configured with any license server".

When I try in the RD Licensing Diagnoser to connect to Remote Desktop Session Host Server, it shows the above error message.

The Windows server RD Licensing Manager has 20 Licenses installed, but shows as never issued.

The error message suggested resolution says "Configure a license server for the Remote Desktop Session Host server. If you have an existing license server, specify that license server for the RD Session Host server. Otherwise, install RD Licensing on a computer on your network and Configure RD Session Host server to use it". When I try to specify a Remote Desktop Session Host server by connecting to the Windows server, again the above message shows in the RD Licensing Diagnoser: "Configure a license server... to use it".

In the Server Manager program, when I attempt to Add Roles or Features, I get to Deployment Type, and it shows the RD Connection Broker to be the apparently correct server. I select 'Standard Deployment' and click Next. Error message shows: "Could not retrieve the deployment information from the RD Connection Broker server XXXX".

Please advise.
