Local printer only prints intermittently through remote desktop

$

Hi,

We have a very odd issue with our RD setup, and I have searched high and low for a solution, but no luck so far.

So, here's the problem.

We have a local domain with a local server running win server 2016, 5 workstations with win 10 pro and a shared network printer. Locally everything works fine and as expected. Every user also have a remote desktop into an off site server running win server 2012 to access a specific application.

Printing to our locally shared network printer through this RD session works fine sometimes, and sometimes nothing happens at all. Sometimes restarting RD helps, sometimes not. Sometimes restarting the local workstation helps, sometimes not...

The same thing happens even if we set the workstations up with locally installed printer drivers, and not run it through our local print server.

What gives me the headache is that it sometimes work, and sometimes not. There doesn't seem to be any particular pattern either. It can work well for a whole week, and then fail 3 times in a day. All the users fail to print independent of each other, meaning that even if two users can't print, the other three still can...

I hope some of you may have an idea of what the underlying problem may be or where to start troubleshooting.

Thanks a lot!

Connection takes too long for multihomed server

Server: Windows Server 2016 Datacenter with latest updates
Client: Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB with latest updates

Problem: RDP connection from the client to the server takes almost 10 seconds.
The server is multihomed, interface 1 is 10.0.1.0/24 and interface 2 is 211.189.110.45/24.
The client has interface 211.189.110.200/24.
Interface 1 has a higher priority. Whole AD infrastructure is in 10.0.1.0/24.

No errors/warnings in Application or System event log.

But there are errors in Applications and Services Logs-> Microsoft -> Windows -> RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS

The network characteristics detection function has been disabled because of Reason Code: 2(Server Configuration)..
'Failed GetConnectionProperty' in CUMRDPConnection::QueryProperty at 2735 err=[0x80004001]
'Connection doesn't support logon error redirector' in CUMRDPConnection::GetLogonErrorRedirector at 4073 err=[0x80004001]
'Failed CreateVirtualChannel call on this Connections Stack' in CUMRDPConnection::CreateVirtualChannel at 2349 err=[0xd0000001]

Interface 2 which faces to the internet has enabled only these features:
- IPv4
- IPv6

But it did not work with all features enabled (as they're by default).

RDS 2012 R2: A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the (name-of-service) service

Hi guys,

On a random base (daily, weekly) we're experiencing major log-in problems on our Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services farm. The VM's are hosted on Hyper-V 2008 hosts and we're not using Citrix techniques etc.

Users are reporting that they cannot log-in, the log-in sessions hangs with a blank screen when loading their user profile (e.g. Please Wait For The User Profile Service).

In the System event log of the server on which the user is logging on the following errors are shown:

Source:        Service Control Manager
Date:          23-12-2014 7:28:01
Event ID:      7011
Task Category: None
Level:         Error
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Description:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

…and after 30 (or sometimes 60) seconds, the same error only another service (in random order):

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

…and after exactly 30 seconds, the same error only another service:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UxmSms service.

etcetera, with the following errors:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the Netman service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the AudioEndPointBuilder service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the WPDBusEnum service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the NlaSvc service.

The Portable Device Enumerator Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the TrkWks service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

These errors are logged continuously.

An administrator cannot solve this since he isn't able to login in as well (console or remotely), only a hard reset of the VM is possible to use the affected server again.

I took different steps to solve this problem without any success, like:

- Installing the latest Windows updates
- Removed unnecessary printer drivers, print monitors and print processors (no local printers/drivers are installed, only Remote Desktop Easy Printer driver is used)
- Searched different forum posts, but found only hotfixes for Windows Server 2008 R2.

Can someone please help me with this annoying problem?

Many thanks!!

EDIT:
Of course is increasing the time-out not really an option here... http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/13765.event-id-7011-service-timeout.aspx

Prevent users software install in RDS

Hello:

I have installed  couple of Windows 2008 R2 RDS in a Windows 2003 Domain, and everything works fine for remote access, the only

item that I cannot figure out is how to prevent users from installing any software on the RDS server other than what is offered.

I have looked at software restriction policy and there has to be an better way to prevent users from installing

any unauthorized software. At the moment users can download anything and run the install so I am not sure what I missing

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Set a default remoteapp based on the user

Hi there,

Using remote desktop, is it possible to set some kind of default remote app instead of a full desktop environment for a specific user ?

Currently, I'm able to do this using 2 ways :

- by creating an RDP file which contains some remoteapp* parameters, and pass it to mstsc.exe

 - using a Custom User Interface policy for a dedicated app user (for example calc@demo.com user will have win32calc.exe as custom user interface) thanks to security filters.

The first way involves client-side configuration. I don't want that.

The second way works but creates an empty fullscreen background around my custom user interface program. If I close my program, the user is now facing a background without any further action possible but closing RDP session. I could build a wrapper around my program to call shutdown -L but it requires more work. I don't want to use a batch file.

So ideally, I want the best of both worlds : a server-side configuration only, and where only the app must be visible to the end user. Without any empty fullscreen background around it.

I'm using Windows Server 2016

Many thanks for your help.

I am having issues with RDS 2016, I have just renewed the SSL certificate and imported in but it is erroring out saying

Your session ended because of an unexpected server authentication certificate was received from the remote pc

I have confirmed the new SSL certificate is correct and working, I have checked the local certificate store under personal and noticed the local server has expired and it will not let me renew it, it gives me an error of no certificate templates available.

Can anyone assist?

Audiosrv server 2016 crashes applications like explorer.exe, Google Chrome etc.

Good morning.

We've been experiencing random problems on our RDSH vmware environment. At random times, the audiosrv seems to trouble other applications and makes them not respond anymore, restarting the audio service temporarily fixes the problem. I have made a gpo to restart the audiosrv, but of course this is not a solution.

We are currently on KB4489889 (OS Build 14393.2879)

Remote Desktop Services without AD

Hello, I have an unusual problem after installing Remote Desktop Services without AD on Windows Server 2019. Well, I installed CALs per user, I configured everything according to the service https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2833839/guidelines-for -installing-the-remote-desktop-session-host-role-service and now after connecting the user to the server a message appears: There is a problem with your Remote Desktop license and the session will be disconnected in 60 minutes. Contact the system administrator to solve the problem.

Server OS 2016/2019 Session hosts (RDS) problems with Remote Desktop Services is currently busy

Dear colleagues and support.

That is not something that was solved here, I found a couple of similar problems with 2008r2, but it cannot be applied to latest OS. And problem described in other topics are a little different

Our case:

We are using large infrastructure based on many Servers 2012r2 all in one RDS servers (Broker, Web, SH is installed at every server). Many servers published behind some load balancer.

As we have a lot of servers in farm - we have a redirected profiles configured (over GPO) and placed at DFS.

We started testing 2016 servers, and our test group start reporting problems with "Remote Desktop Services is currently busy".

Usually problem solved itself in 1-2 min, user have to try several times before he is able to connect. There was no hanged user sessions or something like this or some useful even log as i can see.

There was no solution for 2016 problem over the internet, so I was hoping to find it with 2019 server.

But we are able to reproduce problem even on "clean", powerful (8 cores, SSD, 32 GB RAM), freshly installed server with single role (RDS) on it for the minimal number of users (1-2 users online)

So that is not something like server load or not enough resources.

I assume it is related somehow to redirected profiles or some service really "busy" with what? But why it is working stable for 2012R2 and has such problem with 2016/2019? May be we can adjust some parameters, timeouts or something like this?

Do we have any workaround for this except disabling redirected profiles or living forever based on 2012 r2 (that is not an option when you have a farm for 1000 users online and many member servers behind balancer)

Many thanks for your ideas!

Select Icons To Appear In Taskbar Doesn't Stay Selected Between Sessions - Possible UPD Issue

$

Every time I log into RDS, I have to re-"Select which icons appear on the taskbar" to have my notification shown in the system tray.  Every time.  I have UPD and Redirected Folders.  In User Profile Disks setup within the RDS setup, I chose "Store all user settings and data on the user profile disk".  Yet, it's not saving my selection of icons that I want displayed within my system tray upon logging off.  What do I need to do so that users don't have to keep re-selecting every time they log into RDS?  It seems to defeats the purpose of using UPD, i.e., is unable to roam properly.  Thank you!  -John Babbitt-

User is logged on to a temporary profile

Hi All,

A virtual server (with Terminal Server role) based on Windows Server 2016 was upgraded several times in attempts to rectify the issue with users logging on to temp profiles. The number of connected users roughly 30-35.

It now has 20vCPUs and 72GB or RAM and at the moment CPU usage is about 30% and RAM usage is about 70%. This means the server is not running out of resources.

Now that I can exclude the resources related factor what else might be the root cause of this issue which recur literally every day?

Per User RDS licensing on Windows Sever 2016 in Workgroup environment

$

Hello to All!

We have a problem with RDS feature on 2016 Server.

Server was deployed with no CALs installed and worked some time in a trial mode. Then owners of this server bought 30 Per User licenses trough SPLA programm and I was asked to activate and install licenses in it.

Before I connect to server I saw that owners are now in procces of deleting grace period registry entry (because grace period has ended and they was in big hurry to make it work again).

After all this and mine (standart activation and installing licenses proccess) manipulations server now did not want to see legal licenses and continuing working in trial mode (grace period still ticking). Last manipulations was to delete grace registry again and reboot the sever (I found similar situation https://www.360ict.nl/blog/no-remote-desktop-licence-server-availible-on-rd-session-host-server-2012/) but it did not helped and now grace period start ticking from beginnig (120 days).

I found info that 2016 server is still can issue Per User CALs to local users in Workgroup environment and made all manipulations with local group policies https://digitalbamboo.wordpress.com/2017/04/05/deploy-remote-desktop-services-in-a-workgroup-easily/ and other stuff and now in diagnostics there have no warning and all green.

Maybe some one faced similar problem or have any suggestions I would be very graceful. I'm desperate already.

VDI and RDS

Hello, I've got a question regarding the use of VDI and RDS at the same time.

We managed hotels and most of our front desk computers will be required to use VDI and not RDS due to software that has to be installed at each front desk pc for credit card and room keys and it won't work on RDS since each reader is independent.

My question is if we setup VDI for the front desk computers which will use Dell Wyse ThinOS and then all the other computers in the Hotel are RDS on Dell Wyse ThinOS can we set it up so that if a user logs into a front desk computer it goes to the VDI machine and then if they sign into a back office terminal it goes to the RDS server?

If that's possible do you just have the wyse terminal set to sign into the VDI machine using the vdi hostname or would you still point it to the Broker?

For RDS I've went into the DNS and put in a A record since we have multiple RDS servers. How would this work with VDI?

The other question is what is the difference between buying a VDI license vs just buying a Windows 10 license and putting that on a Hyper-V VM?

Thanks

Mouse cursor interacting with Remote Desktop App windows on the wrong monitor

We have a WinForms application we use as a remote desktop app and recently we've had multiple users report a situation where clicking on one monitor actually interacts with windows on another monitor. Restarting the remote desktop application seems to fix the problem. Our users have a two monitor setup.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

RD Desktop Environment - Shared Applications

$

We have two W2019 Servers running both with the Server RD Session Host role installed. Lets call them Server A and Server B.

  • Server A is used as a RD Desktop Environment
  • Server B is used for Shared Applications like Word, Excel etc.

Our idea is that the user does logon on Server A, accessing the Applications from Server B.

Basically this does work well however file type association seems not to be working in this environment. We are getting the following event on Server A:

Event ID: 1026

Source: RemoteApp and Desktop Connections

"The installation of the default connection has been cancelled. A default connection cannot be used on a system that is part of a Remote Desktop Services deployment."

Default connection to webfeed.aspx has be configured via GPO and has been applied successful, file type association is configured for the shared Application also.

On Server A the file type association is not working so the user can not open a file from Windows Explorer directly.

As the Event Log Warning does it say really clear is it not possible to use shared Applications on a Desktop Environment with working file type association ?

Forcing UDP for RDS session

$

I've got a RDS environment that is using Windows Server 2016. The thin clients we use are Wyse 3040. I am wanting to use UDP instead of TCP for the connection. I've not been able to figure out how to use UDP. I can see on my wyse client that a few packets use UDP but 99% use TCP.

We connect using a VPN so we don't have a gateway setup. Is there a group policy I can add or what is the best way to do that?

Thank you

Hyperv enhanced session and RDP

$

I have a windows 10 computer and it has a hyperv windows 10 VM within it. When I try to log into the VM using enhanced session mode of HyperV, which requires RDP support, my logon is refused with the classic 'you need the right to sign in...".

I have verified the following:

The account I am using to logon is an administrator account and also has the User right 'allow logon on through terminal services'

Remote desktop connection is enabled through control panel system.

Firewall port for RDP is open and allows anyone in.

Is there something I have missed?

Thanks
