RDS 2016 - Undefined process takes focus away from application

Hi.

When launching published applications, this undefined process sometimes goes to the foreground.

The result is that you can not interact with the newly started application before you:
a) Use the mouse to click in the newly started application window
b) Alt+Tab back to the newly started application window

In either case, the undefined process dissapears and you can go back to work as normal.

RDS 2016 - Outlook showing underlaying window

Hi.

Environment:

  • Windows Server 2016
  • RDS Remote Apps
  • Office 2016 - MSI Installation
  • Windows 10 Enterprise v1803 clients

The Outlook window dissaperars or looses focus when the cursor is moved between e-mails or tasks. Resulting in the application behind Outlook showing instead.

The problem is sporadic and it does not matter what window is behind Outlook. PDF reader, Excel, etc...

The video below shows the problem.

Remember: In the video the user is only moving the mouse cursor. No mouse clicks and no keyboard keys are in play here.

RDS 2016 - Start Menu freeze

Hi all,

We're currently experiencing issues at a random interval with regards to freezing start menu's on Server 2016 RDS Hosts.
When the freeze happens we can see the following items in the eventlog: Event ID 5973

Seems to be related on a per user base, as multiple users can connect to the RDS server but only a few of them are experiencing issues.

We are using User Profile Disks and Start Menu redirection. Any thoughts?

"Activation of app Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy!CortanaUI failed with error: Not enough storage is available to complete this operation. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information."

"Activation of app Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy!CortanaUI failed with error: The RPC server is unavailable. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information."

"Activation of app Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy!App failed with error: The remote procedure call failed. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information."

RDP Blank Screen Lock/Freeze after Minimized Idle.

Hello! I'm currently testing RDP for Windows Server 2019 for later deployment purposes and I am running into an odd problem. On machines that are Hyper-V machines I RDP into if I minimize them and wait a few minutes then restore the window I get a blank screen (color of the desktop). It stays this way for about 5-10 minutes then it recovers. This behavior does not happen on the HyperV host machine.

My environment:

- All Windows 2019 Servers. 1 host, 3 virtualized. All Virtualized servers exhibit the same issue.

- Everything is updated with patches.

- I'm connecting from a Windows 10 machine. Command line returns Version: Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.17763.379]. winver: 1809 (17763.379)

What I have tried (singularly):

- Disabling UDP using GPO.

- Disabling RemoteFX using GPO.

- A few other Googled results.

Still the problem occurs. I haven't even tested RDS yet and can't possibly roll that out to clients until this is resolved. I have attached a screenshot of what the RDP session looks like after I restore it from the Start Menu bar.

I would attach a screenshot but looks like I can't with this forum.

How to uncheck Smart Cards checkbox in Remote Desktop Connection

I am looking to uncheck the Smart Cards box in Remote Desktop Connections Local Resources > Devices and resources > More... area.

I attempted this by disabling this in GPO under Windows Components/Remote Desktop Services/Remote Desktop Session Host/Device and Resource Redirection/Do not allow smart card device redirection   however this seems to be a separate setting.

I need this fix to be able to be used in a enterprise environment, not a one off computer.

After installed SP1 on Windows Server 2008 R2, the RDP is unable.

RDS sessions freeze, Able to shadow (With given permission)

Hi Everyone,

I have been working on a problem with our single RDS server for a while now and hope some of u are able to help me out. (just application RDP, not desktop sharing)

Alot of users are reporting that their sessions are getting stuck/frozen and need to reopen the application from the RDweb/RDP file to continue working. I saw that once a user experienced this i could take over the session with shadowing and permission could be given from the user while the session is frozen. So i'm guessing it has to be somting about the graphics? There is no black screen however. Just a still image of the last action and frame. If i take over i can move it around and do stuf but stil not visible to the user.

The problem usualy start when they come back from a short break 5/15 minutes. Unlocking the workplace would then show the stuck session. Idle times and disconected times are not to worry about. All above 6+ hours.

I could post lots of logs. But if u would like to see any in specific i would post them.

Specifications:

  • Windows server 2016 with latest updates from March. (KB4489889) & (KB4485447)
  • All roles are on one server. Broker, Gateway, Session host, RDWEB, Licening is on another server.
  • Clients work on windows 10 1803 and updated to latest. RDP version is: 10.5 using HP thin clients.
  • 80+ users in terminal.
  • No Desktop, just application.
  • Sometime once a day per person, somtime once a week. It varey's alot.

Unable to complete Ctrl+Alt+End for Credentials on Windows 7 remote desktop through Server Terminal Session

Here is the scenario:

From a home machine I log into a terminal session on Server 2003. From there I use RDP to Windows 7 machine on a domain. On attempts to run certain programs or adjust UAC settings, the UAC prompts for the following options:

UAC I want to complete this action by entering my credentials on the authentic Windows logon session
OR
I don't want to complete this action

Selecting to complete credentials option prompts for Ctrl+Alt+End which sends me to Windows Security Task Manager on the Terminal Server instead of completing the action request on the Windows 7 desktop. I tried the on screen keyboard as well but it does the same thing. How do I fix this issue?

RDP to Azure AD joined computer

I am trying to connect to a remote computer that is Azure AD joined. Both the client and host computer are running Windows 10 version 1809. Currently I am connecting without NLA to be able to authentication myself, but I would like to connect with NLA.

According to this article: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/client-management/connect-to-remote-aadj-pc this should be possible, providing you use the username format "AzureAD\JeroenDeWit" to connect. However, this results in an error stating "Your credential did not work. Remote machine is AAD joined. If you are signing in to you work account, try using your work email address." I can't post a screenshot because my account is not verified yet.

Other guides like https://cloudbuilder.io/documentation/Windows10Pro-RDP-AzureADJoined/ also suggest authenticating without NLA.

Am I doing something wrong or is Microsoft doing something wrong? :)

Windows Server 2016 MSI Installer appears and application freezes

$

Hello,

I'm banging my head against the wall and can't figure out my problem on my own. So I would be very happy about some feedback.

Following situation:
I have a Windows 2016 server running as a terminalserver. I have 5 clients connected to my server. I mainly use 2 applications on my server which communicate with eachother (medical programs, one for managing patient data and the other one to show imported images).

Whenever I start my program A and navigate to options a MSI installer appears which wants to install application B (even tho it is already installed). The MSI installer stops during "Preparing to install..." and program A freezes.
I took a look at my logs and it gives me the following warning: "Detection of product 'xxx', feature 'OleInterface' failed during request for component 'xxx'. It then tries to open the MSI installer and stops.
When I deinstall application B the MSI installer doesn't appear.

My Application A does not need the OLE interface but I tried both installing application B with  and without OLE interface with the same result.

Here is what confuses me the most: with the administrator account aswell as with 4 other user accounts I run in the problem mentioned above. But with 2 other user accounts I do not have any problem at all. There is no MSI installer appearing and my program does not freeze.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

How to setup HDD's for RDS Host computer

$

I've got a server that I need to setup for RDS. I have 8x 2.5" bays and I bought 8 1.2 TB 10k rpm 12gb sas drives to use. The raid card is a Dell H730 with 1GB cache.

I am planning on setting up the following in VM's on this server

-RDS Broker with license role

-RDS Host

What would be the best configuration for the hard drives? I was thinking of doing 2 drives in raid 1 for the host and then 6 drives in raid 10 for the VM's to run on. Or would I be better running all 8 drives in raid 10?

Thank you

RDS farm - additional logging required for dropped connections

Hi all,

           2 x 2016 brokers at front of farm, 200 session hosts running 2012 R2.

We are having seemingly random disconnects - and the issue is that we cant find anything in the logs indicating why clients are disconnecting.

The existing articles around about increasing logging dont appear to be applicable. e.g. https://support.microsoft.com/en-my/help/2747656/introduction-to-log-files-that-are-useful-for-troubleshooting-rds-issu

I'm interested in

Turning up RDP logging on certain clients as much as possible

Turning up RDP logging on certain session hosts as much as possible

I dont believe we need to increase logging on the brokers, as the brokers seem to be doing their job correctly.

Can anyone suggest methods for this? unfortunately i cannot put procmon and wireshark on them asll, as there are just too many - and the issue appears to be "random"

unable to login and receive error “The User Profile Service service failed the sign-in. User profile cannot be loaded.”

Hi,

We have 7 RDS servers in the farm and single RD Conenction broker. We use USER PROFILE DISK and the UPD is configured via the file servers. None of the users are unable to login and receive error “The User Profile Service service failed the sign-in. User profile cannot be loaded.”all users expreicne the same issue

Also tried to login to the servers using the mstsc /admin or console issue and it is the same issue.Unable to open remote commd prompt, remote registry and eventvwr as well. Users are currently logged in and if they log out they cannot connect getting the same issue.

Last night we made te following GPO changes to fix the issues as users logged with Temporary profile.

Edit GPO “Terminal Server GPO Computer – RDS Session Host Settings” and apply the following settings:
 Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\System\ Logon - "Always wait the network at computer start up and logon" -> Enabled
 Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components/Remote Desktop Services\ Remote Desktop Session Host\RDSH\Connections "Automatic reconnection" -> Disabled
 Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components/Remote Desktop Services\ Remote Desktop Session Host\RDSH\Connections "Configure keep-alive connection interval" -> Disabled
 Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components/Remote Desktop Services\ Remote Desktop Session Host\RDSH\Connections "Restrict RDS users to a single RDS Session" -> Enabled
 Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components/Remote Desktop Services\ Remote Desktop Session Host\RDSH\Temporary Folders "Do not delete temp folders upon exit" -> Disabled.

Post the GPO changes everything was working fine and after 7-8 users started reporting this issue.

Please advise

Need help! I have to move a small RDS server from Win2008R2 to Win2016 this weekend! Easiest way?

$

i need to move Remote Desktop Services off of Windows Server 2008R2 and onto Windows Server 2016 over the weekend.  It's a very basic server.  It has just the "Remote Desktop Services" role installed, and the "Remote Desktop Session Host" and "Remote Desktop Licensing" role services installed.  Nothing else is installed related to RDS.  The server does exactly one thing.  It lets about 10 users log in with remote desktop connection from their windows desktop and get provided a "remote desktop" that has exactly ONE application on the desktop.  They run that ONE application and then log off.  While the server is a member of our Active Director domain, the users are local users (local to the server).  I already have built the new Win2016 server and have installed Remote Desktop Services (with only Remote Desktop Licensing and Remote Desktop Session Host installed).  I havent done anything else beyond that.  I suspect i will have to do at least a) migrate the user accounts (I dont care if i lose any user profiles as they shouldnt have anything in them of value); b) migrate the licenses.  Can anyone help me get started? I have almost zero RDS experience! :|

Barebones RDS Install

I have a Windows Server 2008R2 server running the Remote Desktop Services role, and the only role services i have installed are "Remote Desktop Session Host" and "Remote Desktop Licensing".  With this i can provide a Windows desktop experience to a set of remote users who need to run an old legacy application.  The remote user uses Remote Desktop Connection to remote to this server, and they log in with a local user account on that server.  They have one icon on their desktop that points to the legacy program they run.  They launch the program, use it, close it, and log off the remote desktop session.  It's very simple and barebones.  I dont need anything more than that.

I have to replace this server because 2008R2 is at end of life later this year.  I tried creating the exact same environment on a Windows Server 2019 server, installing just those two role services but it failed.  Doing research i discovered that Remote Desktop Services has really changed since 2008R2.  I tried doing the full install, but i couldnt get local accounts to work with it.  And there was way too much extra stuff that i dont need (I dont need a web gateway, etc.).  Is it still possible to create a barebones, old-school terminal server on current Windows Server OS?  I just want a simple remote desktop session with one program shortcut.   Nothing else.  Can this be done anymore? IF so, can you point me in the right direction?    And is this supported by Microsoft?

Windows 10 black screen with remote app

$

We have started seeing black screens with Windows 10 builds 1709 1803 1809.  The black screens are intermittent and for the most part can be resolved by minimizing and maximizing the remote app.  This leads me to believe this is a screen redraw issue and not a problem with any of the remote apps.

The RDWEB farm is server 2012R2 with 2 gateways, 2 session brokers, 2 web servers.  There are 207 collections with 171 host servers.  Windows 7 w\ rdp 8.1 does not seem to have this issue.

2012 R2 - HA RDS Broker + HA database

Regarding RDS in Windows Server 2012 R2:

What other ways to have HA Broker along with HA database, butwithout SQL Server Ent or Std?

I do not have SQL licenses available at the moment.

I have already done 2 Brokers HA with SQL Express. What I need now is HA for database.

Does it work with NLB or something?

In Windows Server 2008 R2, I know it was possible...

Specifying the default connection URL

Hello,

We are currently running three Remote Desktop Session Hosts (RDSH). Our users can currently access their RDS Desktop by doing one of the following:

  1. Browsing to the web portal provided from our Remote Desktop Web Access (RDWA) server. For example, https://contoso.com/RDWeb
  2. On their local machines, they open their start menu, browse to the Work Resourcesfolder, then open the RDS Desktop app that we push out to them.

#2 listed above is done via a GPO. We have the Specify default connection URLGPO enabled and set the default connection URL to http://contoso.com/rdweb/Feed/webfeed.aspx (provided to us from our RDWA).

Both of these methods work great and we have no issues connecting to our desktops. An issue that we have been seeing is that once the user is signed into their RDS Desktop, they can still see theWork Resources folder in their start menu. It has caused confusion with our users. What they will sometimes do is:

  1. Open their RDS Desktop like normal.
  2. Once inside their RDS Desktop, they will go into the Work Resources folder again, and then launch Word or Outlook for example. What is happening is that they are initiating a 2nd RDS connection while already inside an RDS Desktop.

The reason we believe this is happening is because the GPO is a user configuration setting. When they establish a connection to one of our RDSH, the user GPO will apply to their session.

Unfortunately, this GPO setting is not available in a computer configuration. Would anyone know how to work around this issue?

lock down RDS 2016 for standard users

hello we are providing full session desktop (rds 2016)

i notice that any domain user can open "server manager" and "administrator tools"

this seems to be security risk.  How can I disable these two items but still allow it for the domain admins?
