Hello,

We have 8 RDS, One Broker, Windows 2016 Std., on a Farm.

We have GPO's Policies on those servers.

From Time to Time, some users are experiencing task bar freezing.

The desktop icons are working, but the task bar is freezing and you can not do nothing on the Task Bar.

The only way is to log off and log in again.

It there a solution ?

With Best Regards,

Haim

RDS 2016 - Start Menu freeze

Hi all,

We're currently experiencing issues at a random interval with regards to freezing start menu's on Server 2016 RDS Hosts.
When the freeze happens we can see the following items in the eventlog: Event ID 5973

Seems to be related on a per user base, as multiple users can connect to the RDS server but only a few of them are experiencing issues.

We are using User Profile Disks and Start Menu redirection. Any thoughts?

"Activation of app Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy!CortanaUI failed with error: Not enough storage is available to complete this operation. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information."

"Activation of app Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy!CortanaUI failed with error: The RPC server is unavailable. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information."

"Activation of app Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy!App failed with error: The remote procedure call failed. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information."

Old RDP Connections to Windows 2016

I have an issue with old Windows CE devices connecting to an new Windows 2016 terminal server. The old CE devices use the older login where you get connected to the server and then authenticate, as opposed to RDP 6, where is prompts you for credentials.

The CE devices are only 240x320 touchscreens (Old Motorola MC9090 RF guns), so what happens on the display is the username and password field are cut off, and users have a difficult time selecting these fields.

Previous Windows 2008, the login screen had a different orientation, so it was more user friendly for those devices. Any one have any ideas if its possible to rearrange the screen or change resolution on just this screen?

I have tried just about everything and would really be disappointed to have to revert back to 2008 R2, just because of a login screen. Updating or getting new devices are not possible at this time.

I have also tried:

  • to auto login the account - i know not secure, but could not get it to work
  • remove user profile picture - was not able to get the image removed.

This is a picture of what is displayed:

Thanks for any help on this.

Windows Server 2012 R2 - Remote Desktop Services warning

Hello,

I logged on today on a RDS server to perform some windows updates and i saw a warning that it says "Remote Desktop licensing mode is not configured.
Remote Desktop Services will stop working in 33 days. On the RD Connection Broker server, use Server Manager to specify the Remote Desktop licensing mode and the license server.

Our production/RDS infrastructure consists of 4 vm's

Name    Roles
RDS1 -- RDS-RD-SERVER, RDS-GATEWAY
RDS2 -- RDS-RD-SERVER, RDS-CONNECTION-BROKER, RDS-WEB-ACCESS, RDS-LICENSING
RDS3 -- RDS-RD-SERVER
RDS4 -- RDS-RD-SERVER

On the disaster site we have again RDS on 4 vm's and the roles are like this:

RDS1 -- RDS-GATEWAY
RDS2 -- RDS-CONNECTION-BROKER, RDS-WEB-ACCESS, RDS-LICENSING
RDS3 -- RDS-RD-SERVER
RDS4 -- RDS-RD-SERVER

The message does not appear on the disaster site. Only on the production. I believe that someone tried to do something on the production site and messed up the roles. Could someone help me out with this issue?

Thank you in advance!

Load Balancing on RDS Server

So our RDS server is currently windows server 2008 R2, and wanting to migrate or upgrade to a Windows Server 2016

With that being said, as of currently our RDS environment doesnt have  a load balancing function so everytime we go on to do a maintenence on oneof the server, we have to tell the user to connect to the secondary

from the next RDS server i want to implement a load balancing function so its a win win for both admin and the user

i did a little research and apparently by building a secondary RD broker server i can achieve this

i wanted to get some advice or help from you guys if its possible on regardain how i would go about this?

i have a lab environment so ican test it out, but i read somehwere that i cannot use SQL expresss in order to achieve the load balancing function

if anyone could give me an insight on how i can achive this it would be more than appreicated!

kind regards.

RDS Gateway and ADFS

I have a customer that would like to setup users from siteA.com to be able to log into RDS and get the full desktop to RDS servers in siteB.com but use credentials for siteA.com.  SiteA.com and siteB.com are completely different forests.  I have looked around and have gotten ADFS setup that works between the two sites but not sure how to integrate ADFS with RDS Gateway.  Especially when I look at setting up the RD CAP rules I can not see the other domain users.

Many thanks in advance for an assistance.

Server 2016 RDS Start Menu and Taskbar Issues

$

We're running a single RDS setup with Windows Server 2016 Standard and about 2 weeks back we started to experience Windows Start Menu and Taskbar issues where these functions would suddenly stop working for all of the RDS users.  We are not using profile disks and each user connects to the RDS via our gateway server and their profile is stored locally on the RDS server.  No desktop or Start Menu redirection is setup.  We have 25 RDS CALs and there's normally about 20 users logged into the RDS server.  The server is a physical server running a 12core Intel CPU with 32Gb of RAM and an NVME SSD Intel disk.

The desktop apps like Microsoft Office will continue to function fine but if you minimize the running apps, the user can not click on the minimized apps as the Taskbar doesn't respond along with the Start Menu.  The only thing that currently works is to logout the user session using Task Manager or to reboot the server.  When the user reconnects and gets a new session, the Start Menu and Taskbar will work for several hours before it goes back to the locked state.

I have read quite a few posts and I have re-installed the Windows apps with the following PS script:

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}

I have run a full sfc /scannow and checked the health of the windows image.  These all complete fine without issue.

Tonight I have found some older posts from 2017 about Server 2016 RDS black screens that are caused by duplicate Windows firewall rules getting created for each user every time they login.  While we don't have the black screen issue, I'm wondering if our issues with the Start Menu and Taskbar could be related to this same duplicate firewall rules for each user.  When I checkedHKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\RestrictedServices\Configurable\System on our RDS, I am seeing thousands of entries.

Does anyone know if these duplicate firewall rules can cause the Start Menu and Taskbar issues?  If so, what's the proper way to delete them?

Thanks for any input.

RDP to Azure AD joined computer

I am trying to connect to a remote computer that is Azure AD joined. Both the client and host computer are running Windows 10 version 1809. Currently I am connecting without NLA to be able to authentication myself, but I would like to connect with NLA.

According to this article: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/client-management/connect-to-remote-aadj-pc this should be possible, providing you use the username format "AzureAD\JeroenDeWit" to connect. However, this results in an error stating "Your credential did not work. Remote machine is AAD joined. If you are signing in to you work account, try using your work email address." I can't post a screenshot because my account is not verified yet.

Other guides like https://cloudbuilder.io/documentation/Windows10Pro-RDP-AzureADJoined/ also suggest authenticating without NLA.

Am I doing something wrong or is Microsoft doing something wrong? :)

NO ACTIVE DIRECTORY and 2 TSE SERVERS : only one connection per user ?

$

Hello,

As you can see in the title, I would like to allow 1 RDP connection per user, between 2 TSE servers that are not Inside a Active Directory.
Is it possible ?

My idea is :

1 + Build 2 scripts started at the opening user session.

2 + Scripts do : check the rdp connection list (logins) and compare with the opening login

3 + Scripts do : if there is already a connection, the session is closed.
(or the other session already connected is closed ... then2 scenarios).

How to do this ?

Regards,

PS : It could be great to use AD, instead these scripts ...but my boss don't want to use AD ...

Issue with RDP client on Windows 10

When a slight drop happens for users they don't get a reconnect message. It freezes up. This happens when users are using RDP from a Windows 10 machine into an RDS. We have never seen the issue with Windows 7. Please advise on how to fix as this seems to be a bug.

Read/Write access of DVD drive through RDP

Hello all,

I have a windows 2016 sever that about 4 users RDP to run an application on the server. This application has files that need to be backed up in multiple places.  Since we moved the application from a PC to a server, we have one into one issue regarding our DVD backups. When we insert a blank CD into the drive, only the local admin and domain admin are allowed to read/write. I've changed the local group policy to allow this, I've added certain users to the local admin groups as well as power users. When we try to access it with one of the user accounts other than local Admin and domain Admin, we get a disk unreadable error.  My work around right now is to have the user log on as local admin and run the disk back up but I'd like to get this figured out and resolved. Thanks for any help in advance.

RDS clients not connecting

windows 2012 r2, hyper-v, clients connect via rds website and then launch a rds session (vdi windows 10 vm). It was working, but then a few users reported being unable to connect. Silly me, I figured "apply latest updates and reboot" and now no one can connect. I updated and reboot the RDS and Hyper-V server (RDS is actually a VM running on the same Hyper-V server).

From the RDS server's RemoteDesktopServices-RDPCoreTS log a connection looks like this:

Event ID 131, the server accepted a new TCP connection from client blah blah blah

Event ID 65, Connection RDP-Tcp#0 created

Event ID 141, PerCounter session started with instance ID 0

Event ID 133 the following network characteristics have been detected for tunnel 8;...

Event ID 132, a channel rdplic has been connected between the server and the client using transport tunnel 0

Event ID 132, a channel rdpcmd has been connected between the server and the client using transport tunnel 0

Event ID 98, a TCP connection has been successfully established

Event ID 100, the server has confirmed that the client's multi-transport capability. (really bad English there BTW)

Event ID 130, the server has initiated a multi-transport request to the client, for tunnel 1

Event ID 130, the server has initiated a multi-transport request to the client, for tunnel 3

Event ID 135, the multi-transport connection finished for tunnel 1, its transport type set to TCP, reason code 3 (no UDP packets received)

Event ID 135, the multi-transport connection finished for tunnel 3, its transport type set to TCP, reason code 3 (no UDP packets received)

Event ID 103, the disconnect reason is 1033

Event ID 102, the server has terminated main RDP connection with the client

I've found articles about RemoteFX and disabling it via GPO and registry values - which I tried to no avail.

HELP!!! please!

Diagnoser shows Host Server Version Server 2016 When Running 2019

$

When I originally Activated the server licensing via Licenses Wizard using our schools Enrollment ID I may have used an older Enrollment ID number.

I think maybe that was the issue. All I know is when I when into the RD licensing Diagnoser it showed that the Remote Desktop Version Host Server Version is:  Windows Server 2016.

... AND I AM RUNNING WINDOWS 2019 ...

After trying everything i know DE-activating, then re-activating with a more current Enrollment ID for our high school. Did not change anything.

So, removed ALL the remote desktop services and then reinstalled and reactivated. Still did nothing to change the information in the Diagnoser.

The information still shows in the Diagnoser:  Windows Server 2016

HOW CAN I GET RID OF THIS PROBLEM?

Thanks,

Dave

Issues putting Server 2019 RDS CALS onto Server 2016

$

We have been struggling with adding RDS CALS to Server 2016.  Understanding that 2019 has to be purchased and then downgraded.  Wizard is not taking it and the Clearing house had to manually push the CALs to the Server.  There are over 600 CALS that will need to be added, and we are afraid that the process will be to have the Clearing house manually push the CALS  to each server.

What is the current procedure for the RDS CALS activation?

"The remote desktop session host server is in per device licensing mode and no redirector mode" error

Hi,

I got an error in RDP server 2008

The remote desktop session host server is in per device licensing mode and no redirector mode,
but the license server does not have any installed licenses with the following attributes
Product Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 Licensing mode:
Per Device License type: RDS CALs or VDI.

In the license manager section, the green checkbox is checked but the error still exists. I reactivated the license but the problem has not been solved. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
