Windows 2016 RDS Gateway issue

$

I'm in the process of testing our new Windows 2016 RDS deployment. I have the following servers in place:

 - Server1 - RD Gateway (DMZ)
 - Server2 - RD Broker, RD Gateway & RD licensing (LAN)
 - Server3 - RD Session Host (LAN)
 - Server4 - RD Session Host (LAN)

On our firewall i have made the necessary nat, port, firewall adjustments. I've an external dns record which points to the RD Gateway and applied a commercial ssl certificate to all RDS servers.

Internally, if i rdp to the RDS collection, i am successfully logged onto one of the RDSH servers and load balancing appears to be working.

Externally, if i rdp to the external dns name (and include the gateway details within the rdp client) i end up logged onto the RD broker, rather than one of the RDSH servers.

I've been through my setup twice and cannot see where i have gone wrong? Any ideas?

expired password reset option RDWEB 2012R2

Hello,

I enabled the reset password option on the 2012R2 web access servers for expired passwords.
This works, well it works so far i can enter my username and password and new passwords.

After that the following error:

You have entered an invalid user name or an invalid password. Re-enter the data.

The users are on a different domain then my RDS collection. How can i get this to work on cross-domain?

Thanks!

Hello, We use a 2012 Windows RDS-Server and everytime we connect with remote desktop we get the error about the certificate. We can check the box to ignore this but we would like to resolve this issue for new users. What certificate do we need to buy, and where / how do we install this?

RDS 2016 - Priorize a RDSH server for a specific app

Hello,

I have a RDS farm running on Windows Server 2016 with 1 RDCB and 2 RDSH.

I would like to add a new RDSH on a branch office to use a local application, and priorize this app on the local RDSH.

As the local RDSH has an issue, connections will be automatically go the headquarters RDSH servers.

Is it possible to do this ?

Thanks in advance.

Windows Servr 2016 RDSH - Firewall rules created at every login.

Hi,

I have a setup with the following servers running Windows Server 2016

1x RDGW, RDCB, RDWA, RDLicensing.

5x RDSH

Im using UPD on the collection.

I have noticed very long login times, after policys etc are shown on screen it sits at a black screen for between 20sec and sometimes up to 5min.

I have also noticed that the svchost.exe that controls the Windows Firewall is using 25% to 50% when a user logs in and using around 1200Mb memory.

After I found this I checked the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security and found thousands of Cortana, Work or school account, Your account, Contact Support rules.

I found a script in this thread that could delete the rules https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/9aad7675-d1ba-4900-9d85-0cd117f5514f/new-firewall-rules-created-for-each-user?forum=win10itprosetup

This made the CPU usage and memory usage go down to normal levels, but after every login a user does it builds up the list of rules again. With many users logging in to the system the rules build up very fast and the login times gets high and every server gets slow.

Example on our RDSH01 server that have been running in production since 2017-04-13 the script found and deleted 66153 rules that it found with "$Rules = Get-NetFirewallRule -All | Where-Object {$profiles.sid -notcontains $_.owner -and $_.owner }"

The script also tryed to get rules with this command "$rules2 = Get-NetFirewallRule -All -PolicyStore ConfigurableServiceStore | Where-Object { $profiles.sid -notcontains $_.owner -and $_.owner }" but fails with an "not enough space error"

The script removes the rules from here with the content of $rules "HKLM:\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\FirewallRules"

and $rules2 was meant to clean up at "HKLM:\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\RestrictedServices\Configurable\System"

but doesnt do anything because of the error on the Get-command. If I try to access it with regedit it stops to respond, guessing there are too many items in that container for it to handle.

Anyone know a solution for this problem?

Regards Fredrik

RDS Farm 2016 - No active connections showing

Hi all,

I'm running a Server 2016 remote desktop farm but cannot see any active connections in server manager. I am running 1 connection broker and 2 session host servers which are running on network load balancing, which is working as expected.

After looking into the issue a bit more I notice that most of the details are coming from 'Windows internal Database'. I have connected into this by using \\.\pipe\MICROSOFT##WID\tsql\query in SSMS and have noticed a lot of the tables are blank, do you think this is why I am seeing no active connections? i.e, in rds.pool table, the 'resource plugin name' is NULL. All 3 of these tables are also completely blank: Rds.User, Rds.UserConnection, Rds.UserConnectionProperty.

I thought it was a writing issue, so I gave full access to these tables and still no change. If i amend any of these values such as the 'resource plugin name' it just corrupts the service 'remote desktop manager' from starting. I have read the below post which is where I am getting my information from, and I have already tried basic fixes like 'uninstall the roles and reinstall them' 'recreate the collection' all to no avail.

Any help greatly appreciated

A source - "My solution was to edit the rds.pool table and remove the pools which had failed being created (it was quite simple to identify them by name, but actually the tell tale sign is a NULL value in the "ResourcePluginName" column).

After deleting the problematic rows, my server manager became responsive once again and I am able to manage existing collections once more"

RDWeb Password Reset not working - Windows Server 2016

Dear readers I have the following issue when a user wants to reset their password via the RDWeb password reset.aspx

"Your password cannot be changed. Please contact your administrator for assistance."

What I have done so far :

- Went into the IIS Manager and set the "PasswordChangeEnabled" to true.
- Reset the IIS Manager via CMD.
- Activated the logging (which doesn't work by the way).
- Rebooted the host & client to be sure.

Does anyone else have this problem aswell or does someone know the solution to said problem?

Hope to hear from someone.

Kind regards,

Remote Desktop Virtual Printer

This happens (or well, doesn't happen) when trying to use the Remote Desktop WebClient.

The issue we are encountering is that even with Printer Redirection enabled, there is no "Remote Desktop Virtual Printer" being connected to the remote session. We can't find any other configuration that has to be made in other for it to appear. It was tried from multiple Web browsers, Edge, Firefox 64.0.2, Chrome 71.0.3578.98 and Internet Explorer 11.

Any idea?

Rest of the configuration:

Server:

Windows Server 2019 Standard

RdWebClientPackage 1.0.7

Client:

Windows 10 1809

hello i have 2 servers to use for rds build.

can i install the broker on one of the hosts? or can these roles not be combined with session host role? or better yet can i install the broker on both session host for high availability of the broker role?

obviously best practice dictates to use dedicated server for the broker .

thanks.

1)I see Master , Model , msdb and my Database in the list . Do I need to backup all of the them and move to Standard SQL Server?

2)Does Azure b/up services(Recovery Service Vault) allow me to do that?

Azure RDS Random Disconnects

$

We have about 60 users that connect to a Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Server Collection in Azure. A couple times per week, many users (not all) who are actively using the Servers will get disconnected from their RDS session. They are able to reconnect and get right back into their profile and open applications.

We can't find a pattern or figure out why the disconnects are happening. The disconnected users are in different cities and on different Session Hosts. Not all users get disconnected.

Environment:
Multiple Sites, site-to-site VPNs to Azure
Several Servers in Azure, Domain Controller, Application Servers etc.
4 RDS Session Hosts, 1 Collection - Server 2012 R2
2 RDS Connection Brokers in HA Mode - Server 2012 R2
RDS Gateway & Web Access Server (not used for internal connections) - Server 2016
RDS User Profile Disks & RDS Licensing on File Server - Server 2012 R2

We have Group Policy set for:
End session when time limits are reached - enabled
Idle session limit = 2 hours
Active session limit = 12 hours
End a disconnected session = 3 hours

Any ideas?

RDG NTDS RPC service port number

I am setting up a RDG server and need help with ports. I am reading this article:

https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Enterprise-Mobility-Security/RD-Gateway-deployment-in-a-perimeter-network-Firewall-rules/ba-p/246873

and

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/224196/restricting-active-directory-rpc-traffic-to-a-specific-port

I understand that i need to make some registry changes on the Domain controller. I currently have 3 domain controllers and they all authenticate user logins. Is it necessary to set the RDG NTDS RPC service port number on all of the DCs? Also, would i have to set all 3 to the same defined port?

Hi,

We are facing an issue when enabling RDS services on a new Windows 2016 Standard Server as seen below.

Tried removing the role and then doing the installation again after restarts and still the same error.

Enabled TLS 1.0 which i saw in another newsgroup was causing this error but still didn't solve for me.

Appreciate, if someone can help with this issue.

W2016 RDSH - users logon time (aka Remote Desktop Service Manager missing)

How do I know current users sessions logon time ?

I previously used Remote Desktop Service Manager, which for some obscure reason has vanished.

I already have a workaround : Use a W2008 Remote Desktop Service Manager and remotely connect to the W2016 box. But just to insist that not everyone does "Deployment" which must take the form of : Broker (doubled), Roaming Profiles(which must be secured by a failover cluster).

Please continue to provide the tools for single servers (also RemoteApp publishing tools are missing)

RDP fails over a Windows VPN

Using Windows 10, trying to RDP to Win2008 Server.
When on a static IP, I can connect.
When on a VPN, set up through Windows, I cannot connect to the server.

I can Ping the server, but not Telnet on 3389 to the server, or RDP to its IP address (or its name)
Colleagues are able to RDP to the server, using same VPN set up.

Have tried turning off Windows Defender Firewall, without any success.
Maybe I need to add the IP address to the Hosts configuration ?

I know there are lots of questions about RDP over VPN, I am struggling to find a match to my situation.

Hoping someone can help!

Language option not available when saving a file from web application

$

Hi,

One of our customers is using a web application. They need to save content from that application to CSV files. Usually there is a selection box called language.

Language box

A user is reporting that the language option is not availlable. I figured out that when i disable protected mode in Internet Explorer, the language option comes availlable.

Now i don't think disabling protected mode is a smart thing to do. Is there a way to just enable the language option for this specific web application?

RDS Server Windows 2016 does not hold the default programs when users log off then back on

I have tried profile disks, group policies, roaming profiles but at different sites and locations the Server 2016 will not hold the users default programs settings per user. Has anyone else seen this and if so what did you do about it.

I have 2012 r2 and 2008 r2 farms that do this with no problem. It is driving me nuts.

How to replace RDS self-signed certificate on server without Remote Desktop Services role installed

$

Hi,

On each windows server there is terminal service which allow to max 2 concurrent rdp sessions. This service use self-signed certificate and I have to replace it with CA-signed certificate, but all information, which I found on how to replace certificate used by terminal service, pertain to situation when Remote Desktop Services role is installed and it seems it not works when the role is not installed

Do you know how to replace the certificate used by built-in terminal service ?

Best regards
